By the 1990s, Japanese enterprises had almost forestalled the entire LCD market. Enterprises with the spirit of “LCD craftsman” represented by Sharp have made contributions to the research and development of LCD technology.

In the mid-1990s, South Korea took advantage of the trough of the liquid crystal cycle to expand substantially and replaced Japan’s position around 2000. By 2009, BOE from mainland China announced the construction of the 8.5 generation line, breaking the technical blockade of Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan. Subsequently, Japanese and Korean companies such as Sharp, Samsung, and LG finalized the plan to build the 8th generation line in China at an alarming speed. Since then, mainland China’s LCD industry has entered a period of rapid expansion for ten years.

Until 2008, China’s LCD panels were still completely dependent on imports. Even in China’s annual consumption of imported materials, LCD panels ranked fourth after oil, iron ore, and chips.

After development in recent years,  China’s panel industry has caught up from behind. In 2015, the LCD panel production capacity accounted for 23% of the world in total. With the Korean manufacturers having announced to withdrawal from LCD and turn to OLED, the global LCD production capacity has further gathered in mainland China. In 2020, China’s LCD production capacity has already ranked first in the world, and mainland produced about half of the – LCD panels global.

At present, Chinese LCD manufacturers are mainly focusing on the further layouts of high-generation LCDs. From 2020 to 2021, in mainland China, BOE, TCL, HKC, and CEC will successively put into production a total of 8 important production lines larger than 7-generation.

In 2020, the outbreak of the global epidemic has led to the adoption of blockade measures around the world. The mode of remote working and learning has led to a consumption surge of laptop electronic terminal products, overlapping the shortage of upstream materials, the global panel entered a new round of price rise cycle in June 2020.

According to Sigmaintell, its OLED market share reached 85.4% in 2019, of which the flexible OLED was also as high as 81.6%.

China had long depended on imports of IC and display screens in the manufacturing of display products. IC and display screens are the two pillar sectors of the ICT Industry. The trend has been changing. With the continuous increase of high-generation production lines and capacity of domestic panel manufacturers and the gradual closure of LCD production lines by South Korean manufacturers, China"s LCD panel market share has increased year by year.

In 2020, China achieved a trade surplus in LCD panels for the first time. Meanwhile, the TFT-LCD has become a mainstream choice in the display panel industry after nearly 30 years of development.

JW Insights data shows that China has invested a total of RMB1.2 trillion($187.56 billion) in TFT-LCD and AMOLED panel production lines; Some 50 TFT-LCD and AMOLED panel production lines have been built, with 197 million m2/year TFT-LCD production capacity, 8.9 million m2/year AMOLED production capacity.

China"s LCD production capacity accounted for 50% of the global production capacity in 2020, becoming the world"s largest LCD panel production center; It will reach more than 75% of the world"s total by 2025.

China"s mainland is currently the only region that maintains continuous growth in LCD panel production capacity. With Japanese and South Korean manufacturers gradually withdrawing from the LCD panel, China is becoming the dominant player.

Chinese domestic display panel manufacturers are also embracing new display technologies such as Mini LED, Mirco LED, OLED and Micro OLED (silicon-based OLED), which are in an explosive market growth phase.

Chinese screen manufacturers plan to invest nearly RMB 30 billion($4.7 billion) in silicon-based OLED products lines, with more than 15 planned production lines and the total production capacity equivalent to 95 million units 1-inch screen, according to JW Insights statistics.

Meanwhile, China is leading the world in Micro LED research and development. Chinese players have actively invested in the Mini/Micro-LED, geared up for a new round of capacity ramps. The total investments in this field have amounted to RMB100 billion($15.6 billion), expected to accelerate Mini/Micro LED commercialization.

Unlike LCD technology that originated overseas, China has kept pace with the world in Mini/Micro-LED and has established a relatively complete industrial chain in it. Currently, the Mini LED is mainly used for LCD panel backlighting; It will be an inevitable trend for the direct LED display with Mini LED in large-screen in the future.

Regarding the Micro-LED technological progress choices, Chinese display manufacturers are facing challenges in mass transfer and full-color display. They are exploring and verifying multiple technical routes.

However, TFT-LCD technology will remain the mainstay for a long time in the future, because of its maturity and competitive prices. Multiple display technologies will coexist in the future; Micro-LED panels mass production will not be achieved in the short term.

Flat-panel displays are thin panels of glass or plastic used for electronically displaying text, images, or video. Liquid crystal displays (LCD), OLED (organic light emitting diode) and microLED displays are not quite the same; since LCD uses a liquid crystal that reacts to an electric current blocking light or allowing it to pass through the panel, whereas OLED/microLED displays consist of electroluminescent organic/inorganic materials that generate light when a current is passed through the material. LCD, OLED and microLED displays are driven using LTPS, IGZO, LTPO, and A-Si TFT transistor technologies as their backplane using ITO to supply current to the transistors and in turn to the liquid crystal or electroluminescent material. Segment and passive OLED and LCD displays do not use a backplane but use indium tin oxide (ITO), a transparent conductive material, to pass current to the electroluminescent material or liquid crystal. In LCDs, there is an even layer of liquid crystal throughout the panel whereas an OLED display has the electroluminescent material only where it is meant to light up. OLEDs, LCDs and microLEDs can be made flexible and transparent, but LCDs require a backlight because they cannot emit light on their own like OLEDs and microLEDs.

Liquid-crystal display (or LCD) is a thin, flat panel used for electronically displaying information such as text, images, and moving pictures. They are usually made of glass but they can also be made out of plastic. Some manufacturers make transparent LCD panels and special sequential color segment LCDs that have higher than usual refresh rates and an RGB backlight. Organic light emitting diode (or OLED displays) is a thin, flat panel made of glass or plastic used for electronically displaying information such as text, images, and moving pictures. SVA-NEC has a solid downstream foundation in the industry chain, and since the establishment of its 5G production line has been expanding its upstream operations. SVA-NEC has maintained firm relationships with Japanese companies and therefore has been able to form partnerships with upstream and downstream companies through the establishment of joint ventures. In this manner, the company has already begun tapping core technology. Particularly notable is its relationship with NEG to establish - after setting up two production lines - a glass substrate furnace in Shanghai, which is projected to help reduce production costs in the future. SVA-NEC has also partnered with Fuji Photo Film to create China"s first large format color filter production facility and partnered with IVO partner MindTech on LCM (LCD Module) projects in Kunshan and Shanghai. All of these initiatives are expected to strengthen SVA-NEC more competitiveness in the LCD panel industry.

All of SVA-NEC"s technology comes from NEC, and although NEC is one of Japan"s five largest LCD panel manufacturers, LCD production is no longer among the company"s core operations and its technology has started to lag behind the competitors. SVA-NEC is also lacking competitiveness in terms of R&D investment, R&D capabilities, and specialized technology. Meanwhile, SVA-NEC is also limited by NEC"s background, which forces the company to import equipment and materials and drives up costs. Financially, SVA-NEC is hovering on the brink of profitability.

BOE obtains its technology mainly from BOE Hydis, which is one of Korea"s top three LCD panel manufacturers. BOE has one of China"s only three 5G production lines, and its subsidiary TPV is the world"s largest monitor ODM manufacturer. However, BOE is still one or two generations behind Japanese, Korean, and Taiwanese panel manufacturers and has relatively limited production capacity since it is a latecomer to the industry. Furthermore, an excess of global production capacity and falling prices have hastened BOE"s descent into unprofitability.

BOE, SVA-NEC, and IVO all have a 5G TFT-LCD production line and a monthly capacity of 90,000, 80,000 and 30,000 units respectively. However, the continually falling LCD panel prices have put the three companies in dire straits.

In late 2006, the three companies decided to merge, but because of difficulties relating to shareholding structure, the merger has been pushed back from June 2007 to the third quarter of 2007. At any rate, the merger is expected to help China"s TFT-LCD panel industry found economies of scale while reducing the financial and technological risks associated with building a next-generation production line. It is also expected to help reduce costs in component procurement. Whether or not the merger will ultimately succeed, however, remains to be seen.
