Dr Pan: Hello, Greg. COB is the abbreviation for chip on board. It is a technology, which IC is bonded directly onto PCB. COB technology is usually used in LCD module with sophisticated and complex functions.

There is a misunderstanding about COB LCD module. Since it is very stable, people would use this structure no matter what. But COG LCD module is very stable, too. It can totally replace simple COB LCD module with only display function and much cheaper for large quantity.

For the sophisticated LCD module with complex functions, COB technology may be the cheapest solution since it integrates all the components on one board and it can reduce the number of IC and board. But every coin has two sides. Even though it is very stable and there is a very small chance that it will malfunction, it will be irreplaceable if it does. There is why we recommend hybrid structure which integrate COB technology and COG technology together. It has all the merits of both technologies.

Take 240*128 graphic LCD module for example. There are 240 dots horizontally, 128 dots vertically. Outer dimension 170.0×93.4 mm and active area 120.0×64.0 mm. When you develop a custom dot matrix LCD module, it can be any length and width, resolution, but it takes a lot of time and great efforts to develop it. The most widely used dot matrix LCD modules with specific sizes were made public and it is very convenient for everyone to get them with no tooling fee. You will not have a lot of options when you choose a graphic LCD module, a custom dot matrix LCD module is still your first choice.

LCD module can include character LCD module or graphic LCD module. Both use traditional COB (Chip on Board) or COG (Chip on Glass) technologies. Now, color TFT LCD displays and OLED displays are popular in the display market. LCD module price is really low and LCD display modules are also easy to produce in small quantity and easy to light up. They are still very popular among hobbyists and have extensive applications in printers, microwave, water machine, medical device, car and home audio, white goods, game machine, toys, industrial meters and etc.

JAZZ series have two sizes: 1.0” and 2.7”.

VTN Character LCD Displays: Orient Display VTN is vertical alignment LCDs which provide superior black background and then great contrast with the options of yellow green, green amber, blue, red or RGB tricolor backlights.

LCD Glass Screens (Panels): Orient Display LCD display panels include different options of polarizer in reflective (saving power), transmissive (better contrast) or transflective (sunlight readable and battery powered) types. Orient LCD glass panels include 1; 2; 2.1/2; 3; 3.1/2; 3.3/4; 4; 4.1/2; 5; 6; 8; and 24 digits. Orient LCD glass panels also include 7 , 14 or 16 segments to display digits and alphanumeric letters. The temperature ranges are from room temperature to wide temperature applications. Orient LCD glass panels can have metal pin or zebra connections.

ARDUINO LCD Displays: Orient Display creates special character LCD displays with SPI interface which is easily hooked up with Arduino, which has been widely acceptable in the electronic design. The series includes 8 x 2 characters, 16 x 2 characters, 20 x 2 characters and 20 x 4 characters with either yellow green STN with yellow green LED backlight or blue STN with white LED backlight.
