LG Display will also continue to manufacture LCD panels for TVs at its facility in Guangzhou, China. However, their production capacity will be reduced by 40% than before __ from 210,000 Gen 8.5 substrates per month to 120,000. The facility has two factory lines __ GP1 and GP2.

LG Display Co., a major South Korean display maker, is expected to stop producing liquid-crystal display panels for TV by the end of this year at the earliest, industry sources said Monday, amid falling profitability and fierce competition from Chinese rivals.

The company said in a regulatory filing last week that it was reviewing an end of production at its LCD TV panel factory in Paju, north of Seoul, without specifying the exact date of production suspension.

The panel maker has been scaling down its loss-making LCD TV panel business, with a goal of discontinuing domestic production as early as possible. It has also said it will reduce production in China in a phased manner.

Demand was falling at an "unprecedented level" both for LCD and premium organic light-emitting diode panels, the company said during an earnings call in October, after years of pandemic-driven strong growth for personal IT devices.

Facing mounting challenges, the company has been trying to turn its business around by putting more resources in LCD panels for IT products and high-margin OLED business and expanding its high-value make-to-order business.

Kim Yang-jae, an analyst at Daol Investment & Securities, forecast OLED panels will make up for more than 60 percent of LG Display"s revenue by 2023, up from less than 40 percent in 2021.

LG Display"s fourth-quarter operating profit is forecast to be around 515.9 billion won, according to an estimate by Yonhap Infomax, the financial news and information arm of Yonhap News Agency.

Samsung Display, Samsung Electronics" display unit, had scaled down its LCD TV panel business since mid-2010 and completely stopped production in June.

Company focuses on advanced OLEDs to fend off China threatBy Baek Byung-yeulLG Display is set to close its LCD TV panel-manufacturing plant in Paju, Gyeonggi Province this year as the company is losing its competitiveness in the flat display business due to Chinese rivals producing cheaper panels, according to industry sources, Wednesday.The display panel maker is expected to discontinue LCD TV panel production at its P7 plant this month, sources said. After completion in 2005, the P7 plant began producing LCD TVs in 2006, making LG Display a leading LCD producer.Though Korean display panel makers have led the global panel market for more than a decade, the booming LCD business had been declining since 2017 due to Chinese rivals flooding the market. The Chinese companies, which received enormous amounts of subsidies from the Chinese government, were able to provide LCDs at much cheaper prices.Consequently, the Chinese panel makers caused a supply glut of LCDs, leading LG Display to reduce its LCD production and shift its focus to high-value and high-priced organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs).With decreased demand for display panels this year due to the global economic downturn, LG Display has officially said that it would close its LCD production in Korea sooner than expected."The P7 is going to be closed six months to a year ahead of what we have said," Kim Sung-hyun, chief financial officer of the company, told investors during the earnings conference call for the third quarter in October. "We cannot clearly tell the specific time as we are communicating with our customers and employees."LG Display said in a regulatory filing on Wednesday that the company is "considering the termination of production of the domestic LCD TV production plant. The company will announce it again as soon as it is decided according to the relevant procedure."Once its LCD production is discontinued in Korea, LG Display will continue producing LCDs only at its Chinese factory in Guangzhou.

LG Display would pay $400 million, the second-highest criminal fine that the US Justice Department antitrust division had ever imposed. Chunghwa would pay $65 million for conspiring with LG Display and other unnamed companies and Sharp would pay $120 million, according to the department.

LG Display has begun expanding its touch integrated LCD business that is also called “in-TOUCH”. Its strategy is to take active actions against the contact-free trend that is spreading due to the COVID-19 pandemic and target high value-added markets through its technologies that are more superior than that of its competitors.

According to the display industry on Wednesday, LG Display has begun manufacturing industrial in-TOUCH panels ranging from 50 to 80 inches at its fab in Guangzhou. The company is planning to pioneer new markets such as shelf for retail, kiosk, electronic blackboard, and digital signage by expanding the lineup of in-TOUCH panels down to 20 inches.

“We are currently manufacturing in-TOUCH LCD panels.” said a representative for LG Display. “We are the only one that is supplying touch integrated LCD panels within the industrial panel market.”

In-TOUCH is an innovative technology that equips touch sensors inside LCD panels and it is also called touch-screen panel (TSP). It provides excellent touch sensitivity and outstanding visibility and allows thinner product design. It has been utilized for mobile phones and car displays.

However, industrial displays now require better touch sensitivity as demands for industrial displays have been rising rapidly as the contact-free trend has been spreading globally due to the recent aftereffect of COVID-19.

In-TOUCH LCD is part of LG Display’s strategy to promote its high value businesses that it has been actively pushing for since the beginning of this year. While cleaning up LCD lines that are used for TVs in South Korea as the lines have lose their competitive edge due to price dumping by Chinese companies, it will place much more emphasis on its LCD business that has competitive edge globally.

CFO Seo Dong-hee of LG Display made a statement during a conference call for the second quarter performance that the company is looking at its LCD business that is used for IT products as a new source of revenue and place emphasis on the business.

LG Display’s Guangzhou fab, which has been on normal operation since last month, now manufactures the company’s key models as it covers 48, 55, 65, and 77-inch OLED panels and in-TOUCH LCD panel. It is expected that the company will focus on expanding its high value-added LCD products while delivering OLED panels in a timely manner.

“As a contact-free culture has become a norm during the pandemic, there will be more demands for electronic blackboards for video conference and digital kiosks that are integrated with touch sensors.” said a representative for the industry. “There is a good chance that LG Display will reorganize its LCD business centered on items with high business values.”
