Before the Huawei P30 phones were launched last month, rumors had it that the devices would feature AMOLED panels made by Samsung. It would appear that the reality of the matter doesn"t exactly conform to that idea.
Going by AnandTech"s new review on the two devices, the regular P30 does, indeed, sport a display made by Samsung. The P30 Pro, however, doesn"t, and it would appear that the more expensive device chose to go with displays made by LG and BOE.
The Mate 20 Pro did the same, in fact, and early units of the flagship were plagued by a green tint issue that looked to be peculiar to devices with the LG panels. Of course, the Mate 20 Pro features a QHD+ display, while the P30 Pro makes do with a 1080p one. As such, it"s unlikely that we get the same issues on the P30 Pro. AnandTech also believes that the green hue issue may have been due to the Magnachip DDICs on those units.
Samsung is widely regarded as being the best manufacturer of mobile OLEDs, so it"s a bit baffling that Huawei went with Samsung on the cheaper device, and used the traditionally worse LG panels on the more expensive P30 Pro. Newer LG OLEDs are a massive improvement over the earlier ones, though, so this shouldn"t be an issue. For example, the smaller Pixel 3 uses an LG panel too.
Huawei is set to unveil its first pair of flagships for the year later this month. The company, at an event in Paris, will launch the P30 and P30 Pro, the direct successors to the incredibly successful P20 and P20 Pro that were released last year. While photography will be the main focus of the devices, it would appear that Huawei isn’t taking any prisoners in other departments either.
According to a new report, the P30 and P30 Pro will feature OLED displays made by Samsung. Huawei has generally ignored Samsung when shopping for display hardware but the company, over the past year, has developed the foundations of a business partnership with its rivals. The P20 Pro featured Samsung-made OLED panels, and so did the Mate 20 X. Of course, Huawei has also preferred to source for its OLED panels from BOE and, at times, LG—as seen on the Mate 10 Pro and Mate 20 Pro.
Sadly, the displays on P30 and P30 Pro will be simple FHD+ ones. Samsung usually reserves its QHD OLED panels for its own devices—although it’s sold them to other OEMs on a few occasions. Last year’s P20 made do with an LCD display, so it’s nice to see an OLED on this year’s iteration.
LG Display was once a major supplier of panels for Huawei, along with its compatriot Samsung, but has ceded its major supplier position to BOE, The Elec said.
The Huawei P30, unveiled earlier this week, used Samsung as the exclusive supplier for its flat OLED panels and BOE as the main supplier for its curved panels, the report said.
LG Display previously supplied huge batches of panels for the Chinese smartphone maker, with its panels being used on smartphones such as the Huawei Mate RS and Huawei Mate 20 Pro.
Along with the new Huawei P30 and P30 Pro smartphones, Huawei announced a couple new wearables in Paris. Updated Watch GT models along with new wireless earbuds were revealed.
As Apple prepares for its services even tomorrow, a few new products were rolled out last week. Google provided details of its impressive gaming platform while others were not that impressed with the Nokia 9.
Samsung and Huawei are the first big tech companies to jump on the folding smartphone bandwagon, so what"s different between the Galaxy Fold and the Mate X?
And here"s another one. A new report emerged claiming that Samsung is the sole supplier for OLED panels for this year"s Huawei flagship, the P30 Pro. Assuming, the regular P30 will also be getting Samsung-made AMOLED.
According to a Weibo post, which in turn claims to have inside information, Huawei has struck a deal with Samsung and has tasked the latter of making all of the OLED panels for the P30 flagships. There"s more than one reason for Huawei to make the switch.
For starters, Samsung is the biggest smartphone OLED supplier in the industry and has the manpower to pull off the high demand. Secondly, this would ensure fewer leaks, although it"s a little too late for that. Additionally, it makes the whole process less complicated as Huawei has to deal with just one supplier.
And last, but not least, the problem with quality control could potentially be solved. Remember the Mate 20 Pro fiasco with the LG-made panels? The BOE ones were fine, but a lot of LG panels failed within the first week of launching, which affected overall sales for sure.
It has been confirmed that Samsung Display and BOE in China are the major suppliers of organic light-emitting diode (OLED) panels for premium smartphone P30 series released by Huawei on the 26th. LG Display, which had been the main supplier of flexible OLED panels for Huawei smartphones, has been replaced by BOE.
According to industry sources on the 28th, Huawei P30"s flat OLED display is supplied by Samsung Display exclusively. And P30 Pro"s curved OLED display is supplied exclusively by BOE.
LG Display has given its main supplier position to BOE. It is reported that LG Display became a sub-supplier for P30 Pro’s curved OLED display. LG Display used to supply flexible OLED panels as the main supplier to Huawei Mate RS and Mate 20 Pro.
On the day of the release of the P30 series, no model was installed with LCD panels. This is the first time Huawei has installed OLED panels to its premium smartphone series. An industry source said, "Up to this point, for Huawei P series, the flat model shipments have been far greater than curved models."
The display resolutions of P30 and P30 Pro are all FHD Plus (2340 * 1080). A flat-type OLED display is applied to low-end S10e among the premium smartphone S10 series released by Samsung Electronics on the 8th, and the S10 and S10 Plus are installed with curved display. The display resolution of the S10e is FHD Plus (2280 * 1080), while that of S10 and S10 Plus is Quad HD Plus (3040 * 1440).
