LCD panel prices have risen for 4 months in a row because of your home gaming? Since this year, the whole LCD panel market has smoked. Whether after the outbreak of the epidemic, LCD panel market prices rose for four months, or the panel giants in Japan and South Korea successively sold production lines, or the Chinese mainland listed companies frequently integrated acquisition, investment, and plant construction, all make the industry full of interesting.

Meanwhile, the production capacity layout of BOE, Huike, Huxing Optoelectronics, and other manufacturers has been basically completed, making industrial integration a necessity.

On the one hand, South Korean enterprises out of the LCD track, the domestic factory horse enclosure, plant expansion action. While LCDs may not sell as well as “upstart” flexible screens, respondents believe they are still strong enough in the traditional home appliance market to warrant continued investment. In terms of the proportion of production capacity, the Chinese mainland accounted for 42% of the global LCD panel in 2019, 51% this year, and will continue to climb to 63% next year.

Of course, building factories and expanding production cannot be accomplished overnight. In the process of production capacity recovery, it is predicted that there will be several price fluctuations, and the cost may be passed on to the downstream LCD panel manufacturers or consumers when the price rises greatly, which requires continuous attention.

Now, one more note before I start breaking down options and prices. When I talk about video walls, I’m not referring to buying four TVs from a big box store and hanging them together. TVs are problematic as video walls for a number of reasons. Their bezels are usually larger and have logos, they’re usually not bright enough to serve as commercial displays, and they can’t meet the demand of 24/7 usage. You’ll hear me discuss LCDs and LEDs, but when I do, I’ll be referring to monitors, not TVs. It’s an important distinction.

While blended front projections and rear projection cubes are viable options for video walls, LED and LCDs are the most common display technology used for video walls.

Generally, LEDs are more expensive than LCDs (for models that deliver the same image quality), making the latter the budget-friendly choice. The major tradeoff is the LCD’s bezel lines for the line-free LED array.

When viewed from a distance, LED displays deliver a large seamless image presentation that’s ideal for stage presentation screens, corporate branding, and digital signage use cases. Using the correct pixel pitch makes LED display deliver a picture-perfect image that’s free of bezels or lines; however, they are not great for close viewing, though that is improving.

For simple video walls, a basic 2×2 high-quality LCD unit can cost as little as $4800, while larger, more elaborate setups with more advanced features (touchscreen capabilities) can go as high as $30,000.

While LEDs are more expensive than LCDs, they lend themselves to more customization in terms of size and shape, with the added benefit of being bezel-less.

Also, custom content needs to be created (or scaled to fit) for video walls that don’t come in standard resolutions like 1080P, 2K,4K, etc. You might want to avoid such non-standard walls since it can be quite expensive to create such custom content. Instead, try to use a video wall layout that maintains standard aspect ratios. For LED walls, this means a 16:10, 16:9, or other cinema aspect ratios while LCD arrays should come in 2×2, 3×3, 4×4, and other standard array sizes.

Liquid Crystal Displays or more commonly known as LCDs are one of the most common electronic components which help us interact with an equipment or a device. Most personal portable equipment and even gigantic industrial equipment utilize a custom segment display to display data. For many portable consumer electronics, a segment LCD display is one of the biggest contributors to the overall cost of the device, hence designing a custom segment display can drive the cost down while also utilizing the display area in the most optimum manner. These displays have the lowest cost per piece, low power requirements, and a low tooling fee too.

At first thought, designing a custom segment LCD might look like a Herculean task, but trust me that it is easier than it seems. In this article, we have summarised and compared the display types and available technologies which are required to construct a custom segment LCD. We have also provided a flowchart that can act as a step-by-step guide while you design your own custom LCD. We have also provided the process we followed, a require gathering sheet we used for communicating our needs to the manufacturer, and a few other data and the quotation we received from the manufacturer.

LCD Bias– It denotes the number of different voltage levels used in driving the segments, static drives (explained later in this article) only have 2 voltage levels or 2 bias voltage while multiplex drives have multiple voltage levels. For example, 1/3 will have 4 bias voltages.

LCDs utilizes the light modulating properties of liquid crystals which can be observed by using polarizing filters. Polarizing filters are special materials that have their molecules aligned in the same direction. If your displays have fewer segments, then static LCD drive is preferred as it is easier to control and cheaper to construct, and has a better contrast ratio. But let’s say that if the number of segments in the display are more than 30-40 then a multiplex LCD drive should be preferred as it has multiple common pins, hence reducing the total number of pins required to drive the display.

Choosing a connector type!!! For the prototyping phase or if you need to connect your LCD display on a Microcontroller directly, a pin type connector is the best and most economical option you have. If you need to connect your LCD display in a final product with a high volume of production which also requires to be extremely durable, but at the same time should not take up a lot of space, a Flex type LCD Connector will work best for you

LCDs have limited viewing angles and when seen from an angle they lose contrast and are difficult to be observed.  The viewing angle is defined by the angles perpendicular to the center of the display towards its right, left, up, and down which are denoted by the notations 3:00, 9:00, 12:00, and 6:00 respectively. The viewing angle of LCD can be defined as the angle w.r.t. to the bias angle at which the contrast of segments is legible.

To improve the viewing angle in an LCD, a Bias is incorporated in the design which shifts the nominal viewing angle with an offset. Another technique is to increase the Voltage, it affects the bias angle, making the display crisper when viewed from a direction.

For example, the viewing angle of a TN type TFT LCD is 45-65 degrees. Extra-wide polarising film (EWP) can increase the viewing angle by 10 degrees, using an O film polariser can make the viewing angles 75 degrees but these come at a cost of reduced contrast.

LCD Control chip or LCD driver chips can be mounted on the flex cable, display, or externally on a PCB. The placement of LCD control chip can affect the cost and size of the display. The 2 most common methods of chip placement are-Chip of Board (COB)and Chip on Glass(COG) which are described below:

We planned to design an air quality monitoring system for which we needed a custom segment LCD panel for an air quality monitoring device. Our product needs to display the following data: 2.5-micron and 10-micron particulate matter (PM) suspended in the air; the units should be in parts per million (PPM). (2 November, 2017) – A major decrease in manufacturing cost gap between organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display and liquid crystal display (LCD) panel is expected to support the expansion of OLED TVs, according to new analysis from

The manufacturing cost of a 55-inch OLED UHD TV panel has narrowed to 2.5 times that of an LCD TV panel with the same specifications, compared to 4.3 times back in the first quarter of 2015.

“Historically, a new technology takes off when the cost gap between a dominant technology and a new technology gets narrower,” said Jimmy Kim, principal analyst for display materials at IHS Markit. “The narrower gap in the manufacturing cost between the OLED and LCD panel will help the expansion of OLED TVs.”

However, it is not just the material that determines the cost gap. In fact, when the 55-inch UHD OLED TV panel costs were 2.5 times more than LCD TV panel, the gap in the material costs was just 1.7 times. Factors other than direct material costs, such as production yield, utilization rate, depreciation expenses and substrate size, do actually matter, IHS Markit said.

The total manufacturing cost difference will be reduced to 1.8 times from the current 2.5 times, when the yield is increased to a level similar to that of LCD panels. “However, due to the depreciation cost of OLED, there are limitations in cost reduction from just improving yield,” Kim said. “When the depreciation is completed, a 31 percent reduction in cost can be expected from now.”

In the year 1888, the first Liquid crystals were invented by Friedrich Reinitzer (Austrian botanist). A liquid crystal display or LCD draws its definition from its name itself. It is a combination of two states of matter, the solid and the liquid. LCD uses a liquid crystal to produce a visible image. Liquid crystal displays are super-thin technology display screens that are generally used in laptop computer screens, TVs, cell phones, and portable video games. LCD’s technologies allow displays to be much thinner when compared to a cathode ray tube (CRT) technology.

Liquid crystal display is composed of several layers which include two polarized panel filters and electrodes. LCD technology is used for displaying the image in a notebook or some other electronic devices like mini computers. Light is projected from a lens on a layer of liquid crystal. This combination of colored light with the grayscale image of the crystal (formed as electric current flows through the crystal) forms the colored image. This image is then displayed on the screen.

An LCD is either made up of an active matrix display grid or a passive display grid. Most of the Smartphone’s with LCD technology uses active matrix display, but some of the older displays still make use of the passive display grid designs. Most of the electronic devices mainly depend on liquid crystal display technology for their display. The liquid has a unique advantage of having low power consumption than the LED or cathode ray tube.

The liquid crystal display screen works on the principle of blocking light rather than emitting light. LCDs require a backlight as they do not emit light them. We always use devices which are made up of LCD’s displays which are replacing the use of cathode ray tube.  Cathode ray tube draws more power compared to LCDs and is also heavier and bigger.

The principle behind the LCDs is that when an electrical current is applied to the liquid crystal molecule, the molecule tends to untwist. This causes the angle of light which is passing through the molecule of the polarized glass and also causes a change in the angle of the top polarizing filter. As a result, a little light is allowed to pass the polarized glass through a particular area of the LCD.

Thus that particular area will become dark compared to others. The LCD works on the principle of blocking light. While constructing the LCDs, a reflected mirror is arranged at the back. An electrode plane is made of indium-tin-oxide which is kept on top and a polarized glass with a polarizing film is also added on the bottom of the device. The complete region of the LCD has to be enclosed by a common electrode and above it should be the liquid crystal matter.

Next comes the second piece of glass with an electrode in the form of the rectangle on the bottom and, on top, another polarizing film. It must be considered that both the pieces are kept at the right angles. When there is no current, the light passes through the front of the LCD it will be reflected by the mirror and bounced back. As the electrode is connected to a battery the current from it will cause the liquid crystals between the common-plane electrode and the electrode shaped like a rectangle to untwist. Thus the light is blocked from passing through. That particular rectangular area appears blank.

An LCD TV monitor utilizes the sunglasses concept to operate its colored pixels. On the flip side of the LCD screen, there is a huge bright light that shines out in the direction of the observer.  On the front side of the display, it includes the millions of pixels, where each pixel can be made up of smaller regions known as sub-pixels. Usually, this display is used in highly advanced as well as professional surroundings like in the viable airplane cockpits.

The Passive-matrix type LCDs works with a simple grid so that charge can be supplied to a specific pixel on the LCD. The grid can be designed with a quiet process and it starts through two substrates which are known as glass layers. One glass layer gives columns whereas the other one gives rows that are designed by using a clear conductive material like indium-tin-oxide.

Active-matrix type LCDs mainly depends on TFT (thin-film transistors). These transistors are small switching transistors as well as capacitors which are placed within a matrix over a glass substrate. When the proper row is activated then a charge can be transmitted down the exact column so that a specific pixel can be addressed, because all of the additional rows that the column intersects are switched OFF, simply the capacitor next to the designated pixel gets a charge.

Both the displays like plasma and an LCD are similar, however, it works in a different way totally. Every pixel is a microscopic fluorescent lamp that glows through the plasma, whereas plasma is an extremely hot type of gas where the atoms are blown separately to make electrons (negatively charged) & ions (positively charged). These atoms flow very freely and generate a glow of light once they crash. The standard liquid crystal displays use the backlights like CRFL (cold cathode fluorescent lamps). Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) is an flat display screen used in electronic devices such aslaptop, computer, TV, cellphones and portable video games. As the name says liquid crystal is a material which flows like a liquid and shows some properties of solid. These LCD are vey thin displays and it consumes less power than LEDs.

As the name says the molecular structure of liquid crystal is in between solid crystal and liquid isotropic. In Liquid crystal display (LCD) nematic type of liquid cyrstal molecular arrangement is used in which molecules are oriented in some degree of alignment. For example when we increase the temperature the ice cube melts and liquid crystal is like the state in between ice cube and water

Construction of LCD consists of two polarized glass pieces. Two electrodes are used, one is positive and the other one is negative. External potential is applied to LCD through this electrodes and it is made up of indium-tin-oxide. Liquid crystal layer of about 10µm- 20µm is placed between two glass sheets. The light is passed or blocked by changing the polarization.

The basic working principle of LCD is blocking of light. It does not produce light on its own. So external light source is used. When the external light passes from one polarizer to the next polarizer, external supply is given to the liquid crystal ,the polarized light aligns itself so that the image is produced in the screen.

In positive LCD display the segments are dark and the background is white and the polarizers are placed perpendicular to each other. In the negative LCD display the segments are white in the dark background and the polarizers are aligned to each other.

The requirements related to tensile strength in bending of cobblestone and concrete curbs are as follows: Class 1, construction mark S—characteristic strength 3.5 MPa, and minimal 2.8 MPa; Class 2, construction mark T—characteristic strength 4.0 MPa, and minimal 3.2 MPa, Class 3, construction mark U—characteristic strength 5.0 MPa, and minimal 4.0 MPa [59,60]. Since all the obtained results exceed 7 MPa, they should be considered satisfactory in relation to all classes of these elements.

While analyzing the strength properties, slightly smaller values were observed for the concretes with LCD admixture, in relation to the reference concretes CI.0 and CII.0. The differences in the obtained values are differentiated, exhibiting no clear tendency. They are most pronounced in the tensile strength test; however, due to the high coefficient of variation (over 10%), they cannot be subjected to a comparative analysis. Generally, it can be stated that lower values were usually found in the concretes with LCD addition. Such observation can be explained both by a higher air content in the concrete mixtures with LCD admixture (the considered concretes exhibited diversified consistency with low degree of liquidity within two classes), as well as the conchoidal fracture of LCD grains. The conchoidal fracture, due to its glassy and smooth texture, deteriorates the mechanical adhesiveness of cement paste to aggregate granules, despite its low porosity found while examining the interfacial transition zone (ITZ). Nevertheless, the low share of the admixture should reduce its significance. It should also be emphasized that extending the maturation time substantially mitigates the differences in compressive strength values. Following 90 days of maturation, all concretes reached the same class. which is especially prominent while applying the CEM II/B-S 42.5 N cement that is characterized by a slower improvement of the strength parameters in relation to CEM I 42.5 R.

The obtained correlations can be described by the equation y=0.39x2−0.02x−2.23, which is characterized by a coefficient of determination R2 = 0.83 and relatively low errors in the intercept (respectively 28%, 25%, 28%). The higher the water-tightness, the higher the frost resistance and the lower the mass loss. The reference concrete CI.0 is characterized by the lowest water-tightness (deepest water penetration), which corresponds to the highest mass loss during the water tightness test. An increase in LCD admixture to 2% resulted in 3-fold decrease in the mass loss of the samples.

Based on the research of Batayneh et al. [64] concerning the impact of various waste materials on the properties of concretes and hardened concrete, it was found that the use of aggregate made of recycled concrete, due to the shape and texture of the grain surface, significantly reduces the workability of the concretes. Similar observations were made when using crushed plastics. In our own research, the impact of LCD additive with significantly smaller amounts and completely different mineralogical and chemical characteristics did not significantly affect the consistency of the mixtures.

The use of 20% recycled plastics or concrete aggregate according to Batayneh et al. [64] reduces the compressive strength compared to reference concrete with natural aggregate. Despite the small amounts of LCD addition used in our studies, similar relationships in compressive strength values were observed in the early maturing periods (see Figure 5). However, after a longer maturing period (90 days), the same compressive strength classes of the tested concretes were obtained.

As a result of research of Mahesh and co-workers [65] regarding the impact of waste from polyethylene plastics, it was found that despite the reduction of early compressive strength of tested concretes (5–10% of the used waste), their compressive strengths after 28 days were comparable to the reference concrete [65]. Similar correlations were observed in own research after the use of LCD as an additive (Table 10).
