Earlier on, we reported on the imminent arrival of the Volvo XC60 T6 when a brochure detailing the car was revealed online. Now, Volvo Malaysia has officially opened the order books for the car, with prices starting from an introductory RM315,888 (on-the-road without insurance).

The XC60 T6 is powered by the all-new Drive-E 2.0 litre turbocharged four-cylinder mill, with 306 hp at 5,700 rpm and 400 Nm of twist available from 2,100 rpm to 4,500 rpm – up 61 hp and 50 Nm from the T5 variant. An eight-speed Geartronic automatic gearbox sends power to the front wheels, and it’s all good enough to get the 0-100 km/h dash done in 6.9 seconds.

Upgrades over the T5 version include 18-inch Pan Alloy rims shod with 235/60 tyres and an eight-inch Adaptive Digital Display. The latter, first featured on the Volvo V40 T5, employs an active Thin Film Transistor (TFT) display unit to project information to the driver. Three themes are available – Elegance, Eco and Performance.

There’s also Driver Alert Control (DAC) and Lane Departure Warning (LDW), as well as Road Sign Information, City Safety, an enhanced version of Volvo’s Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) and Cross Traffic Alert – the latter uses radar sensors at the rear of the car to warn the driver of incoming cars when reversing out into the flow of traffic.

The Volvo XC60 T6 comes with Volvo’s 5+5+5 coverage plan, which translates to a five-year/100,000 km warranty, five years of free service and five years of access to the Volvo On Call roadside assistance programme.

The eagerly awaited all-new Volvo V40 has arrived in Australia promising class-leading dynamics and styling, along with state-of-the-art features and the world"s first pedestrian airbag.

The five-door V40 hatch is Volvo’s contender in the premium hatchback class that includes established euro marques such as the Audi A3, BMW 1 Series and the latest-generation Mercedes-Benz A-Class. Top shelf Volkswagen Golf models are in there, too.

However, despite the fact that Volvo is still considered a semi-premium brand in Australia compared with its German rivals, Volvo has priced the V40 range almost line-ball with the all-new A-Class.

The 132kW/300Nm 2.0-litre five-cylinder petrol T4 Kinetic with Volvo’s six-speed Geartronic auto transmission is priced from $41,990, but can also be specified with the Luxury trim for $45,990.

The Volvo V40 is also the first Volvo car to introduce Electrical Power Assist Steering (EPAS), which better supports the integration of safety systems such as Lane Keeping Aid and Park Assist Pilot.

Volvo has also upgraded its stability and traction control systems, with the V40 gaining a raft of new features such as a roll angle sensor, engine drag control, trailer stability assist and torque vectoring for reduced understeer.

The Volvo V40 offers two world-first safety systems – the Pedestrian Detection System, as well as the state-of-the-art Pedestrian Airbag Technology. The latter operates by using sensors in the front bumper that detect contact between the car and a person.

The V40 is also the first Volvo to feature several upgraded safety systems including the City Safety System, which is now active at speeds up to 50km/h (previously 30km/h).

There’s also Volvo’s new Park Assist Pilot that can detect a parking spot 1.2 times the length of the car, followed by an audible signal before the steering is taken over by the system.

The Driver Alert System is another high-tech safety unit available on the Volvo V40 that integrates several systems including Lane Keeping Aid, Road Side Information and Active High Beam. Active Bending Lights that swivel around bends are standard on Luxury and R-Design variants.

Not surprisingly, the Volvo V40 has already been awarded the top five-star safety rating by ANCAP, and holds the record for the highest overall safety score ever recorded by overseas affiliate Euro NCAP.

The V40 is also the first Volvo to be designed around its ‘Human-centric’ design language; boasting several new innovative features including an eight-inch adaptive digital display and active TFT display. The fully graphic display replaces the traditional instrument cluster and allows drivers to choose between three distinct themes: Elegance, Eco and Performance, which changes the central display from a speed scale to a red-lit tachometer.

Other standard features across the V40 range include a five-inch infotainment display (upgradable to seven-inch), eight-speaker high performance audio system, rear parking sensors, LED daytime running lights, auto lights and wipers, cruise control and City Safety.

Choosing the Luxury specification adds electrically operated front seats, leather trim, leather-wrapped steering wheel with metal inlays, illuminated gearshift knob, active bi-xenon lights, high-performance audio system with seven-inch display, satellite navigation and reversing camera.

Also available on V40 Luxury and R-Design models is the Driver Support Pack, priced at $5000. This combines four significant driver aid features including BLISS (with Cross Traffic Alert and Closing Vehicle Warning), Adaptive Cruise Control, Driver Alert System and the new Park Assist. Volvo claim the value of this pack is just under $9000.

Volvo Car Malaysia is following-up the success of its XC60 T5 by announcing the availability of a new variant to the XC60 family, the new XC60 T6, a few months ahead of its initial date. “Our objective of making luxury and safety more accessible in the form of the XC60 T5 has been well received, which is why we are launching this new variant much earlier than projected,” said Keith Schäfer, Managing Director of Volvo Car Malaysia. “While the T5 variant has its own objectives, the new XC60 T6 will be a showcase of Scandinavian luxury – a successful blend of comfort, performance and safety that holds true to our core values,” said Keith Schäfer, Managing Director of Volvo Car Malaysia.

Volvo Cars is constantly developing technologies and innovations that will make cars safer to drive. The brand envisions that by the year 2020, nobody shall be seriously injured or killed in a new Volvo. Priced at a limited introductory offer of RM315,888 (on-the-road price without insurance), the new XC60 T6 is fully-equipped with class-leading active safety technologies and powered by Volvo’s all-new modular powertrain, the Drive-E engine.

The all-new two-litre, four-cylinder Drive-E engine will churn out a maximum power of 306 hp at 5,700 rpm and a maximum torque of 400 Nm. Mated with an 8-speed Geartronic transmission, the new XC60 T6 is sure to deliver a refined drive and excellent fuel economy. As with all new Volvos, the XC60 T6 will come with a 5-year warranty, 5 years of free service including parts per scheduled maintenance, and 5 years of free roadside assist (Volvo-on-Call). The new XC60 T6 is available from today, at all authorised Volvo dealers nationwide.

The new XC60 T6 carries with it, the same exterior and interior updates as the new XC60 T5,  along with a few additions, including 18” Pan Alloy wheels with 235/60R18 tyres and the 8” Adaptive Digital Display both coming in as standard. New XC60 T6 owners will also enjoy a power operated tailgate and a grocery bag holder in the cargo area.

The Adaptive Digital Display, which debuted in the all-new V40 T5, uses an active TFT (Thin Film Transistor) crystal display to bring the driver personalised information. There are three themes to choose from: Elegance, Eco and Performance. The default mode Elegance has a classic look and layout. The Eco mode has a green colour theme and is designed to encourage and reward a fuel-efficient driving style. Performance features red illumination, and a rev scale instead of the speedometer displayed in the Elegance and Eco versions.

The Digital Display theme colours are also echoed in the all-new connected infotainment system. It features a refreshed HMI with a number of innovative functions, such as:Cloud-based services integrated into the car, enabling future functionality updates

The new T6 Drive-E engine has an output of 306 hp and 400 Nm of torque – doing the century sprint in just 6.9 seconds. The engine features a class-leading combination of a compressor and a turbo charger. Using the supercharger to fill in the bottom end gives the engine a big, naturally aspirated feel. The mechanically linked compressor starts to function immediately at low revs, while the turbocharger kicks in when the airflow builds up. Fuel consumption with new 8-speed automatic is 7.3 l/100 km (169 g/km) in the XC60.

IntelliSafe, Volvo’s blanket name for all active safety systems, is an important part of the driver-centric approach in the XC60. Several key technologies will debut in the XC60 T6:

The new Active High Beam Control eliminates the need to switch between low and high beam. Instead, Active High Beam Control makes it possible keep the headlights on high beam continuously. When another car approaches from the opposite direction, the system helps to prevent dazzling of the oncoming driver by shading out only as much of the beam as necessary. This is done by an ingenious projector module mechanism integrated into the headlamp.  The same benefit applies to drivers in preceding cars.

New advanced software, including more rapid vision processing, has now made it possible to extend Volvo Cars’ present detection and auto brake technology to cover certain cyclist situations as well. The new Pedestrian and Cyclist Detection with full auto brake is equipped with an advanced sensor system that scans the area ahead. If a cyclist heading in the same direction as the car suddenly swerves out in front of the car as it approaches from behind and collision is imminent, there is an instant warning and full braking power is applied. The technology also detects if a pedestrian steps out into the road in front of the car. If the driver does not respond in time, the car can warn and automatically activate the brakes.

The XC60 T6 will see the inclusion of several proven safety technologies such as Driver Alert Control (DAC) – a world-first innovation that registers the car’s progress on the road and alerts drivers whom are not concentrating; Lane Departure Warning (LDW) – which alerts the driver with a gentle warning sound if the car crosses one of the road markings without an obvious reason such as use of the turn indicator; and Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Queue Assist and Distance Alert – a radar-based system which maintains the set time gap to the vehicle in front all the way down to standstill, making this comfort-enhancing system usable in slow-moving queues with repeated starting and stopping.

Road Sign Information supports the driver by displaying road signs in the instrument display. Road Sign Information can be combined with the Speed Alert function, which provides the driver with a visual warning in the speedometer if the speed limit is exceeded

Both the XC60 T5 & T6 features an upgraded City Safety system. This system is active at speeds up to 50 km/h. The car automatically brakes if the driver fails to react in time when the vehicle in front slows down or stops – or if the car is approaching a stationary vehicle too fast.

Another innovative option for driving in the dark is the low-speed Cornering Light feature. As an extension of the current Active Bending Light system, it lights up the area the driver is steering towards for safer manoeuvring.

Both the XC60 T5 & T6 offers the enhanced Blind Sport Information System (BLIS), which is radar-based. The technology can now also monitor and alert the driver to rapidly approaching vehicles up to 70 m behind the car. Of course it still informs the driver about vehicles in the blind spots on both sides.
