No two displays are the same, but there are a few guidelines that can help you choose the right screen for you. From the screen resolution, pixel density, type of display, to even the size, there are a lot of factors that determine whether a display is good or not, but fear not, read on as we explain what to look for in a smartphone or tablet display.

The first thing you might hear about your display is the screen resolution and pixel density or PPI (pixels per inch). Due to the vast size and price range of Android devices, there are a wide variety of screen resolutions, so we’ll cover the most popular ones.

Screen resolutions are commonly written as width x height (e.g: 800 x 480 means that the display is 800 pixels wide, and 480 pixels tall). Here are some of the most popular screen resolutions:

480×800 (WVGA) : A few years ago this was the premier screen resolution and as such was found on many high-end phones like the Samsung Galaxy S2, but now it’s usually reserved for mid-range smartphones with displays that are smaller than 5-inches.

1280×720 (HD/720P): To be classified as a high-end smartphone last year you would need a HD display. Some mid-range and high-end smartphones and tablets will be found with this screen resolution.

1920×1080 (Full HD/1080P): Usually reserved for TV’s, Full HD smartphones have come up in a big way this year. A Full HD display is currently exclusively available on high-end smartphones and tablets.

When it comes to screen resolution there are a lot of factors. On smaller displays and cheaper smartphones you’ll see lower screen resolutions, and on larger displays or high-end devices you’ll see higher screen resolutions.

Pixel densities are important when it comes to the overall sharpness or the display, which is important for reading web pages or e-books. Pixel densities vary due to the screen resolution and size. If the display is large, but the resolution is low, the PPI (pixel per inch) count will be lower.

LCD stands for Liquid Crystal Display, and is the most popular display type for mobile devices. This is due to its relatively low power consumption and good image quality.

The most popular type of LCD display is the TFT display, which stands for Thin Film Transistor display. This display tends to be the best type of mobile LCD displays.

It has a transistor next to every pixel, and therefore allows each individual pixel to be turned on and off. This improves response time and provides greater contrast than other types of LCD displays. However, they also tend to be the most expensive, and less power efficient.

Some high-end smartphones and tablets use an IPS (In-plane switching) panel which is a type of TFT panel, but improves upon some of the drawbacks of a regular TFT LCD panel. IPS panels produce consistent and accurate color from all angles. Therefore, they have wider viewing angles than regular TFT displays, which is great for people who watch videos with a group of friends.

Manufactured by Samsung, but used mostly by HTC, Super LCD is a display technology which removes the air gap between the outer glass and the display elements. This reduces the glare, and also consumes less power and has better outdoor visibility than regular LCD screens.

OLED stands for Organic Light-Emitting Diode, and an OLED display consists of organic polymer which lights up when charged with electricity. It offers many advantages over LCD displays as it is thinner, brighter, more power efficient and provides wider viewing angles. They also provide much better contrast and response times.

The most popular type of OLED panels on mobile devices is AMOLED technology. AMOLED stands for Active Matrix Organic Light-Emitting Diode and is even more power efficient than standard OLED displays.

The largest manufacturer of AMOLED displays is Samsung, which markets its displays under the Super AMOLED moniker. Most of Samsung’s high-end and flagship smartphones use Super AMOLED panels, however some use LCD panels.

Samsung has sometimes used a PenTile matrix on its displays. This uses two subpixels inside every pixel in a RGBG (Red-Green-Blue-Green) structure, instead of the standard RGB (Red-Green-Blue) structure. Some have criticized PenTile displays for overall fuzziness, but most agree that at higher pixel densities the fuzziness is not apparent. The PenTile matrix is used by Samsung for longer life of display, as the blue subpixel degrades faster than the other subpixels in OLED panels.

Both display technologies offer advantages and disadvantages. AMOLED screens have higher contrasts and deeper, true blacks, but LCD’s tend to offer more accurate colors. While AMOLED displays are brighter when viewed off-center, LCD panels can be viewed more easily under direct sunlight.

AMOLED displays tend to be more power efficient overall, however, LCD panels are more power efficient when it comes to displaying web pages. AMOLED screens have better viewing angles, but LCD panels tend to be sharper on lower resolution panels thanks to the use of the RGB structure instead of PenTile RGBG.

Of course, people looking for a budget smartphone won’t find many devices utilising AMOLED displays (unless they are older Samsung Galaxy S smartphones), so they would be looking at LCD panels. People looking for mid-range devices will face the same situation, however, there are a few devices available using AMOLED displays. In the high-end market for smartphones there is a bigger question on which display technology is best.

Overall, it depends on whether you prefer the true blacks and high contrast of AMOLED displays or the accurate colors and direct sunlight performance of an LCD panel. In the tablet market there is no doubt as to which display you should use, since the tablet market almost exclusively uses LCD panels.

VGA was first released in 1987 by IBM as part of their PS/2 line of computers. Since its initial inception, VGA has taken on a few different meanings in recent years and is characterized by its 640×480 resolution. It also refers to the 15-pin D-subminiature VGA connector and the analog computer display standard. Currently, it’s used for high-definition resolutions of 1080p or higher.

Developed in 1988 (just one year after IBM introduced VGA) by NEC Home Electronics, SVGA was an improvement on its predecessor. It increased graphics display resolutions by up to 36%, which amounted to 800×600 pixels. SVGA was designed to be compatible with the IBM PC and eventually replace VGA.

If you’re not sure what XGA looks like, you’ve definitely seen it before. Most modern laptop computers—around 80% of the current market—use XGA, which is an LCD display that exhibits 1024×768 resolutions. Sizes range from 15.1 inches to 10.4 inches.

As the name suggests, SXGA+ is an extension or modified version of XGA. With a 1400×1050 resolution, this screen is designed specifically and exclusively to accommodate laptop computers. It also has a much higher display accuracy than its predecessor thanks its compatibility with the horizontal and vertical dot pitch that all standard-sized laptop computers have.

QXGA has a resolution of 2048×1536. This particular display mode is commonly used by graphics designers, computer engineers, and other users who require or prefer exact image details when using various programs for specific projects. It’s also ideal for users who use their devices to watch online videos.

Like WXGA, WSXGA+ is also a display mode that’s meant to be an improved version of the standard XGA, except it has a screen resolution of 1440×900 with an aspect ratio of 15:10, which makes it more compatible with smaller screens.

WSXGA is basically a widescreen version of the original WXGA featuring a screen resolution of 1680×1050 with 32-bit pixels. It’s most commonly applied to wide screen LCD displays that are 15.4 inches diagonally.

Although it’s rarely used in technological applications, WUVGA has an aspect ratio of 4:3 and display resolution of 1920×1200 in its most advanced format. The reason it’s rarely used in technological applications is because of how expensive this formatting is.

qHD has become the standard display mode for modern high-end smartphones and certain gaming consoles. With a 960×540 resolution coupled with a 16:9 aspect ratio, qHD accounts for a quarter of 1080p’s screen resolution, but it still packs a powerful punch for mobile devices.

Also known as full HDTV, ultra-HD, and true HDTV, 1080p is a display mode that’s applied to most modern television screens as it has a far superior picture quality compared to 720p. It has a screen resolutionof 1920×1080, which indicates that there are 1080 vertical scans that occur right before the viewers’ eyes.

While most modern flat screen televisions boast a 4K standard resolution, electronic companies are also starting to adapt an 8K display mode. What does this mean? The K in all these abbreviations stands for “kilo”, meaning “thousand”. 2K, which is the standard used for most commercial movie screen projectors and high-end mobile devices, has a screen resolution of 2560×1440. 4K has a resolution of 4096×2160 and is also used for some high-end mobile devices. 8K, which has a resolution of 7680×4320 and is considered to be the highest screen resolution that humans can view. It’s also projected to be the next reigning champion of screen resolution standards as the technology continues to evolve.

When you are looking for a small gadget display with impressive quality, you really can’t do any better than a TFT LCD display. It’s versatile, reliable, and most of all, impressive.

TFT LCD displays refer to the Thin Film Transistor type of LCD display. That means each pixel in a TFT LCD would have its own transistor glass. This, in turn, offers more control over both the colors and images that it would render. This kind of display has been quite dependable that laptop manufacturers have decided to utilize this for their screens. Soon, TFT LCD displays were also used in television screens.

That said, you don’t have to be a laptop or television screen manufacturer to appreciate the benefits of utilizing these TFT LCD displays. Just to give you a better idea, here are 5 advantages you can expect to gain when you use them to create your own tech gadgets:

Because TFT LCD displays have a compact form as well as an incredibly low depth, they are quite easy to install. In fact, they can even be hung on the wall without much effort. That would come in useful if you are creating a screen for presentations in the workplace or if you simply want to create a dynamic picture frame.

TFT LCD displays are known for displaying crystal clear images. That means consumers are going to enjoy viewing their high quality photos and videos when displayed on a screen made with this. The ability to view high resolution videos and photos are important in the film and television industry, and advertising industry.

Perhaps, one of the best qualities of a TFT LCD display is that it is touchscreen capable. This means that this type of display works great if you are looking to build something that requires accessing an interface on the screen, whether it’s for the regular consumer market or the business to business segment.

Because of its high quality display and touch screen capability, TFT LCD displays enjoy a wide range of use. In fact, it is recommended for television, computer monitors and even the navigation system within an airplane cockpit. At the same time, this display can also be used on handy gadgets like mobile phones, MP3 players, tablets, kindles and more.

One of the best things about TFT LCD displays for small gadgets is that it comes in a wide range of sizes and resolutions. In fact, you can get it in a size as small as 3.5 inches with a display resolution of 320 x 240. In case you require a size not normally offered, you can always order a TFT LCD display in custom sizes.

For all these reasons, it’s smart to consider using TFT LCD displays. Make your tech creation come to life and give it that touchscreen capability that everyone appreciates today. Make sure it stands out by using a TFT LCD type of display.

Have you ever wonder where TFT derive from?  Why is TFT referred to as LCD?  The phenomenon started in early days, when bulky CRT displays were thing of the past and LCD was its replacement, but as time progresses, there were still room for improvement, which leads to the birth of TFT’s.

TFT is a variant of an LCD which uses thin film transistor technology to improve an image quality, while an LCD is class of displays that uses modulating properties of liquid crystals to form what we call an LCD (liquid crystals display) which in fact does not emits light directly.

Even though LCDs were very energy efficient, light weight and thin in nature, LCD were falling behind to the CRT display, which  then leads to a change in LCD manufacturing, where performance became a big problem.

For example, having a 2001 Mustang vs a 2014 Mustang, the dimensions and engine of the 2014 has been redesign for performance reasons, not mentioning user friendly, so does the LCD to TFT.

As the birth of TFT, the elements are deposited directly on the glass substrate which in fact the main reason for the switch was because TFTs are easier to produce, better performance in terms of adjusting the pixels within the display to get better quality.

As TFT’s become very popular throughout the century due to its elaborate low charge associate and outstanding response time, LCDs became a thing of the past, and TFT became the predominant technology with their wider viewing angles and better quality this technology will be around for a long time.

IPS (In-Plane Switching) lcd is still a type of TFT LCD, IPS TFT is also called SFT LCD (supper fine tft ),different to regular tft in TN (Twisted Nematic) mode, theIPS LCD liquid crystal elements inside the tft lcd cell, they are arrayed in plane inside the lcd cell when power off, so the light can not transmit it via theIPS lcdwhen power off, When power on, the liquid crystal elements inside the IPS tft would switch in a small angle, then the light would go through the IPS lcd display, then the display on since light go through the IPS display, the switching angle is related to the input power, the switch angle is related to the input power value of IPS LCD, the more switch angle, the more light would transmit the IPS LCD, we call it negative display mode.

The regular tft lcd, it is a-si TN (Twisted Nematic) tft lcd, its liquid crystal elements are arrayed in vertical type, the light could transmit the regularTFT LCDwhen power off. When power on, the liquid crystal twist in some angle, then it block the light transmit the tft lcd, then make the display elements display on by this way, the liquid crystal twist angle is also related to the input power, the more twist angle, the more light would be blocked by the tft lcd, it is tft lcd working mode.

A TFT lcd display is vivid and colorful than a common monochrome lcd display. TFT refreshes more quickly response than a monochrome LCD display and shows motion more smoothly. TFT displays use more electricity in driving than monochrome LCD screens, so they not only cost more in the first place, but they are also more expensive to drive tft lcd screen. The two most common types of TFT LCDs are IPS and TN displays.

Pixel, also called Picture Element, A pixel is the smallest unit of a digital image or graphic that can be displayed and represented on a digital display device. A pixel is the basic logical unit in digital graphics. Pixels are combined to form a complete image, video, text, or any visible thing on a computer display

LCD display doesn’t operate the same way as CRT displays , which fires electrons at a glass screen, a LCD display has individual pixels arranged in a rectangular grid. Each pixel has RGB(Red, Green, Blue) sub-pixel that can be turned on or off. When all of a pixel’s sub-pixels are turned off, it appears black. When all the sub-pixels are turned on 100%, it appears white. By adjusting the individual levels of red, green, and blue light, millions of color combinations are possible

The pixels of the LCD screen were made by circuitry and electrodes of the backplane. Each sub-pixel contains a TFT (Thin Film Transistor) element.  These structures are formed by depositing various materials (metals and silicon) on to the glass substrate that will become one part of the complete display “stack,” and then making them through photolithography. For more information about TFT LCDs, please refer to “

The etched pixels by photolith process are the Native Resolution. Actually, all the flat panel displays, LCD, OLED, Plasma etc.) have native resolution which are different from CRT monitors

Although we can define a LCD display with resolution, a Full HD resolution on screen size of a 15” monitor or a 27” monitor will show different. The screen “fineness” is very important for some application, like medical, or even our cell phone. If the display “fineness” is not enough, the display will look “pixelized” which is unable to show details.

But you see other lower resolution available, that is because video cards are doing the trick. A video card can display a lower LCD screen resolution than the LCD’s built-in native resolution. The video cards can combine the pixels and turn a higher resolution into lower resolution, or just use part of the full screen. But video cards can’t do the magic to exceed the native resolution.

Abbreviation: QVGA, VGA, HD, FHD, 1080p, 1440p, 4K etc. It is very straight forward for different applications. For TV buyers, they can simply focus on 4K, 8K etc; for industrial engineers, they most likely focus on VGA, HD, WVGA etc.

Special names by individual companies: Apple Macbook Pro Retina 6K display, Acer Nitro, ASUS Pro Art , ViewSonic Elite, ASUS TUF ,Samsung edge Infinity-O Display etc.

For many years, TFT displays have been the dominating technology in visualization. TFT LCDs are all around in our daily lives — in consumer and automotive applications, in our business environments, in healthcare, and within communication devices, home appliances, and factory automation products. While there are many LCD products available today, they’re not all suitable for every application. This is especially the case for industrial LCD monitors. To determine the best LCD display for your application, it’s important to understand your target market and its unique design issues.

The vast majority of LCD displays are designed for consumer devices such as smartphones, cameras, tablet computers, and gaming devices. But they have very different requirements than those for industrial applications. Due to very competitive pricing and quick production cycles, consumer display modules don’t always incorporate the durability, reliability, and advanced features required to survive in an industrial environment. Product life cycles are also typically much shorter in consumer applications. Screens manufactured for these applications are generally only available for one, in best case two years.

In contrast, display modules for industrial applications require Long product life cycles— often up to ten years or more. Plus, when an industrial module is discontinued by the manufacturer, a successor product should be backward-compatible so as to fit into the existing enclosure without requiring a redesign of the entire system.

The ability to withstand temperature variations as well as shock and vibration is also a key consideration when selecting displays for today’s industrial applications. They must be resilient enough to withstand frequent bumps or jiggles by machine operators and surrounding equipment, and also must be able to handle various operating temperatures.

Industrial displays are typically housed in an enclosure as part of a larger piece of equipment. In these situations, the heat generated by the surrounding equipment gets trapped within the enclosure, which can be detrimental to many displays. Therefore, it’s important to keep the real storage and operating temperature requirements in mind when choosing a display. While measures can be taken to dissipate the generated heat — such as using fans within the enclosure — the most efficient way to ensure compliance with the storage and operating temperature requirements is to select a display that is optimized for these types of environments. Fortunately, improvements in liquid-crystal materials have made it possible to extend the operating temperature ranges of LCDs from –30 to 80°C presently.

It’s important that displays used in industrial applications support clear and precise viewing from multiple angles under a variety of ambient light conditions. The brighter the environment, the more difficult it can be to read a standard transmissive LCD display with a typical brightness of 250 to 300 cd/m2. NVD has developed displays that can perform in the 800-cd/m2-and-higher range by implementing high-efficiency LEDs for the backlight unit– if necessary, in combination with special brightness enhancement films.

Increasing the display’s contrast ratio is another effective way that display manufacturers can improve display readability in bright environments. Typical contrast ratios for non-industrial displays are in the range of 200:1 to 300:1, which may not be sufficient when a machine operator is viewing the display from a distance. Displays with contrast ratios around 500:1 or greater are better suited for industrial environments. Another benefit of this method is that it doesn’t increase power consumption.

Multi-angle readability is another key selection factor. In a typical industrial environment, a machine operator is more likely to be positioned at an off-angle rather than right in front of the screen. Implementing a display designed for consumer applications typically doesn’t work well in this situation, as there is image distortion and color shifting when viewed at an angle. But, a number of technologies have been employed to improve off-angle viewing in displays, making them suitable for industrial applications. Some film-based technologies yield viewing angles of 160º horizontally and 140º vertically, but in some cases, this is still not sufficient. In-plane switching technology (IPS), multi-domain vertical alignment (MVA), and fringe field switching (FFS)offer alternatives. These proprietary technologies are able to achieve viewing angles of almost 90-degrees into all four directions without any color shift.

Size and resolution also play a role in overall readability. Displays between 2 and 15-inch diagonal sizes are used most often in industrial applications. These sizes provide sufficient area to view figures, waveforms, and other graphical data without taking up too much real estate on a piece of equipment.

From an aspect ratio 4:3 initially, industrial displays are now shifting to wide formats with WVGA to WXGA resolutions. The wide-aspect format enables users to view longer waveforms and more data on a single display. These display modules can also be designed to incorporate touch-key functions, allowing equipment manufacturers to skip physical switches and buttons and design HMIs based more on software than hardware.

New Vision Display’s experts are prepared to assist in defining appropriate solutions for all applications and in helping find the right balance between manufacturing cost and performance.
