I haven"t built the homebrew controller yet as I only had the Spid installed last week. ;-)  I wasn"t particularly impressed with the Rot2Prog controller for a number of reasons with its inability to talk with PstRotator just the last issue I came across.

You don"t have the "Point in to the Wind" function active do you?  I forgot a number of times to turn that function off when using the AZ only version of PstRotator and would wonder why halfway through a contact I"d suddenly lose the remote station only to see the beam turning into the wind.

On a side note I was so disgusted with the controller I started looking on the internet for a replacement unit and came across this homebrew controller unit by SP5GNI https://hf5l.pl/en/gni-r3-antenna-rotor-controller/ which I plan to build to see if it"s an improvement on the original controller.   I plan to build mine around a Arduino Mega 2560 with a 3.5" TFT display the extra available flash memory should allow enough space to off load the Point in the wind function the controller so a PC doesn"t need to be run all the time.

If PSTRotator is not running the controller can be in auto (A) mode for weeks and it never moves.  If I am watching the controller when it malfunctions I have seen the numeric display flash 208 then display the current heading.   When this happens in PSTRotator the black position indicator remains pointing to the last position while the green indicator moves until it reaches 208. At this point i can make requests through PSTRotator but the Spid controller does not respond. SPID. It is not RF related. I am using a linear power supply and have mix31 ferrites on all leads.

One other question though when I press stop in PstRotator the controller fails to stop is this normal?  I have both controller and tracker refresh at 0.5 seconds.

PstRotator supports separate antenna rotator controllers for Azimuth and Elevation control.It can controltwo separate rotor interfaces: one for azimuth and the second for elevation, or it can control a single azimuth + elevation rotor interface.

The program checks all the time the link status, and if it happens from any external reason to disconnect, the software will try to reconnect the client to server. The link status is displayed to both client and server.MAPS

PstRotator and PstRotatorAz are Shareware - you can try them for free, once you register them, you will receive a code to disable the reminder messages that will otherwise appear at start. In order to let you try the software, the programs are full functional for 10 minutes, and then stop, and the QTH locator is changed to KN34BJ.

The assembly of the case and the hardware was straightforward. The folks at Adafruit provide a pre-built Jesse Linux image for the RPi, including the necessary driver for the Touch Screen Display.

After some configuration work and creating a few shell scripts to make it easy to boot the RPi to an HDMI display or to the Touch Display, we were ready to install the GH Tracker App. We also enabled the VNC Server on the RPi to use a VNC Client application on our MacBook Air instead of directly connecting a display, keyboard, and mouse to the RPi. Finally, we installed Sambaon our RPi to allow files to be moved between our other computers and the RPi.

Jeff at Green Heron Engineering provided a copy of GHTracker V1.24 and the necessary serial interface library to enable its use on the RPi. Jeff is planning to make a tar file available with GH Tracker and the library in the near future. We did some configuration work on LXDE (the GUI interface for Linux that runs on the RPi), and it automatically runs GH Tracker whenever the RPi is booted up. We also optimized the GUI for the sole purpose of running GH Tracker on the Touch Screen Display. Finally, we configured the Ethernet and WiFi interfaces on the RPi to work with our home network and LTE Hotspot modem.

The VNC Client/Server combination allows us to work with the software on the RPi right from our MacBook Air laptop. It also makes for a nice display for monitoring the GHTracker App’s operation from the Mac.

Select ‘Outbound’ from the Settings menu to access the ‘PSTRotator’ menu. 24

 Select the Port number to correspond with the UDP port set in PSTRotator.  Check the ‘Send Azimuth’ and ‘Send Callsign’ boxes.  If using a SteppIR antenna select this check box.  Click on the save icon indicated above.

The imported data will appear in the ‘Recent QSOs’ window. The QSO count, at the bottom of thescreen, should correspond to the ‘QSO found’ number displayed in the ‘Import QSO’ window. 31

6. Close and restart Log4OM by clicking the newly made shortcut and make sure that thename of the new Config is displayed in the top ribbon bar of Log4OM.47. Check that all of the information in the options are as required like the station Info re callsigns and grid references and the upload information for On line logbooks like LOTW, QRZ etcand then save the Config as before.

The main window in the upper portion shows relevant data for a selected spot or entered call sign.The lower portion contains various sub screens for log display, cluster data, etc.

Frequency number convention.Frequency entries made in the new QSO ‘Freq’ field and also in the edit/update windows are in Kcsso enter 14215.678 and the program will display 14.215.678 41

F11 – Provides an Internet browser to display contact information or web site. 45

It is possible to display basic information relevant to the current contest when using LOG4OM duringa contest. (See screen above) The exchange can be incremented automatically for each new QSOand the exchange sent is displayed in the ‘SENT” field as above. The received exchange must beentered manually.

Enter the call of a previously worked station or double click on a cluster spot (lower right hand ofscreen) to enter the call in the CALLSIGN window. Press F7 to display a map giving the location of thestation entered. A panel opens to the right of the map showing bands and modes worked relevant tothe country entered.

Beam Heading and informationInformation relating to the beam heading (short path/Long Path), Distance, Locator, IOTA andpersonal data can be viewed above the cluster display on the right hand side of the map.

Cluster displayUnder the detail pane is a cluster window that is a smaller version of the main cluster display.Double clicking a spot enters the call into the QSO input field and, if rig control is in operation,automatically changes the frequency and mode of the radio.

Column Layout – Titles - WidthThe user can configure the column layout and width for all displays by selecting the ‘Layout’button at the bottom left of each screen. 54

Extended ViewChecking the ‘Ext. View’ check box as shown below extends the cluster window to display the statusof all methods of QSL and the country worked status in a grid format. 64

You can choose to be alerted with a visual indicator or an audible alert, both, or neither. You canchoose the type of display that is shown, whether the display remains on the screen, the importanceof the notification, and even if the notification should be forwarded to another computer. You canhave notifications that trigger an email, run a script, launch a program, or are read out loud. 73

The logbook can be filtered to display QSL status by QSL Type, QSL Sent, QSL Sent Via, QSL Received,QSL Received Via, Dates and Call sign or by using the Search parameters facility.

a. Without entering a call sign in the "Callsign" field click the ‘Search’ button at the top, or press Enter/Return on the keyboard, to display all QSO’s in the logbook in descending date order.

The main QSL management window will refresh and display the LOTW received confirmations andthe dates they were confirmed as below. 101

After filtering as above the QSO"s required to be uploaded must be highlighted or "Select all" at thebottom of the window clicked to upload all QSO"s displayed.

 At this point all the QSO’s will be displayed in the ‘QSO update on database’ window - To clear the data from this window, click on the red ‘Reset printed status’ icon.

When the ‘Country Statistics’ display opens, it shows all ‘Current’ countries. To include ‘Current’plus ‘Deleted’ countries, select ‘Show Deleted’ from the selections at the bottom of the window. 125

Selecting ‘Actual View’ displays various QSL status methods. Selecting one of them will cause the‘tree’ to change, reflecting the updated status for each country for the selected QSL method. 126

1. In the QSO Archive Manager set up some search parameters to refine the displayed list of QSO’s e.g. It is only required to see QSO’s that have:

1) Select the desired QSO from the QSL Management window 2) Check either or both of the DXCC Challenge check boxes for submitted or credited which ever is true. 3) Save and exit the Update QSO window 4) The change will now be reflected in the DXCC Challenge display 139

If a state has been entered incorrectly and displays characters other than the standard stateabbreviation’s the bottom row of the WAS list will show an extra row named “Not found”

However when an Italian call sign is entered the award will be displayed in the “Award Program” listfor selection and References 1, 2 & 3 will be available in the “references” list.

Entering a call sign for Italy will display references 1-3 and reference 6Entering a call sign for Canada it will show NOTHING, because filter at DXCC level wins. So this is anexample of a bad award definition.

DXCC can be set as number (e.g. 294) or as a prefix (e.g. GW). Log4OM will try to import it as DXCCor trying to match the prefix with our country table. If the import fails an error message will bedisplayed.

Awards data is saved in the “QSO Award” field and can be displayed in the recent QSO, QSO Archive,QSL Manager and QSO information windows by clicking the “Layout” button at the bottom of eachwindow. 146

Click the “Award Program” drop-down menu in the Club and Awards F3 tab – Only awards applicableto the country (According to the call sign entered), band, mode and valid date range entered in theinput window will be displayed.

e.g. if a French call sign is entered the French “Association” is displayed with a list of applicable“Region’s” for the user to select from, followed by the list od SOTA “References” for final selection.

SOTA Award statisticsSummits worked and confirmed can be displayed by going to Utilities/Statistics &Awards/Awards/SOTA window. This window will display summits worked by Mode, Band,Association (Country), date range, worked & confirmed.
