I always finding it interesting when a new customer of ours calls to let us know that they can find cheap LCD displays, the same LCD we supply, for almost half the price. After all, cheap LCD displays are the same no matter where you purchase it. Right?

Let me assure you that the phrase, ‘You get what you pay for’ is just as true for LCD displays as it is for insurance, fine jewelry, car repairs and open heart surgery. You will always be able to find a lower cost product or service, but many times you are not comparing apples to apples.

When I was in college I was as close to broke as one could be, but I needed a ratchet set to make repairs on the car. At first, I looked at the Craftsman brand of tools. They were steel, not Aluminum with a life time guarantee that any Sears store would honor. Then, I found another ratchet set at a drug store. It was next to the school supplies and hair products. The drugstore"s tool set was 1/3 of the cost. They were cheap, but hey, I am not a full-time mechanic; why invest in something I will only use a few times?

After talking to a friend at school who highly suggested spending the extra money and investing in the quality, I knew the choice to make. I bought smart instead of cheap and to make a long story short, 20+ years later my Craftsman tools are going strong. They have survived rain, grease, and teenagers. Not so ironically the drug store doesn’t exist anymore and I’m confident their products wouldn’t either had I purchased them long ago.

I now have an attitude that you need to look at each purchase as either an ‘investment’ or expendable item. Identifying an item as expendable is not bad, but you need to choose what is and what is not expendable. For me paper towels, razors, duct tape are all expendable items; whereas reading glasses, car tires, and smoke detectors are an investment.

There is a reason why some things cost more, you are buying the quality and support that come with the set of wrenches or tires or whatever the product. It may sound a bit capitalistic, but if the manufacturer is not making a solid profit, then there is a good chance they will not be around in a year to support you.

The word “cheap” is so polarized in that in one instance you can revel in the victory of finding that super low price and yet simultaneously it is no victory at all if someone looks at your product and says, “Wow, that looks cheap.” So, let’s talk about Cheap LCD displays.

The long and short of it is that LCD’s are in investment. In many cases, they are the most expensive component in your product, but you need to balance that with the fact that they are also what the customer looks at the most. If you are building a hand held device that measures the PH of pool water, it’s a safe bet that people will be looking at the display far more than the battery compartment on the back of the unit. The cheap LCD display may save you a fraction of what other suppliers are quoting, but what is it costing you? Return customers. Good online reviews. Word-of-mouth advertising.

There is a rule of thumb statistic that says it costs a company 7 times more money to earn a new customer, than it does to keep a current customer. So why would you save 20% or even 40% off the cost of an LCD and in return lose your current customers. The savings will not offset the increased advertising cost to bring in new customers.

There are three main fluids used in a monochrome LCD module. They are TN, STN and FSTN. Each fluid has its own niche in which it operates well. One of the main factors impacted by the different fluids is acceptable viewing angle of the display.

An example of a TN display is the display found on gas pumps. You can easily read the gallons and dollars as they quickly fly by. Since most people see the display straight on, there is no need for a higher cost fluid. TN is the right choice and keeps the cost of the product down.

FSTN, film super-twisted nematic displays, are on the other end of the spectrum. They are more expensive than TN and STN, but it offers a sharper contrast and a much wider viewing angle. If you are building a portable device that measures radiation, you want to make sure you can see the numbers on the display from as wide of viewing able as possible. Using a TN in the application may save you as much as 15% on the cost of the display, but is this type of product an investment or expendable?

LCD displays are quite diverse when it comes to the temperatures in which they can operate well. Some even have as much and more than 100 degrees window of successful operation. There are three main temperature ranges of an LCD unit:Normal temperature (indoor temps—think of your living room)

Take for instance one customer of ours who needed the display to work properly on oil rigs near the North Pole. Their product monitors the safety equipment on the rig. Is it worth spending the extra $5 on a display that can survive working in all conditions? Is the LCD display an investment or expendable?

When a supplier is promising you the cheapest deal out there, you need to make sure that you are again dealing with an apples-to-apples comparison. Make sure that they aren’t saving you money by offering you a display that has the cheapest temperature range or the narrowest viewing angle, especially when those aren’t what will suit your product and your situation. They may just be choosing the cheapest alternatives of all the many options available, all to have you wind up with a unusable or inferior product. Then, you not only have a product you aren’t thrilled about but you face the problem of shipping the product back to the foreign country from which it came. This is not a convenient way to deal with the fallout from the “cheap” product! There is a real advantage to buying a product that has American support and part of that advantage is simply the convenience of speaking the same language and being within one shipping day apart from your customer support.

Another primary issue—and one that has become a sensitive topic in recent years with widespread outsourcing—is service. When you are calling for help with an issue, the likelihood is that you are already a little frustrated and just want the customer service representative to solve your problem with a quick, clear, and intelligible 2 minute conversation. When you spend a painstaking 20 or 30 minutes trying to explain the problem and understand the representative after you already spent 20 minutes in a phone tree or on hold waiting to talk to someone that is an intolerable situation.

This may have been helpful at one time, but when you receive 50 to 100 emails a day. You don’t need to read about, “A one day sale on yellow/green LED backlights. Call today and mention savings code 123!”

The engineer took our price and specs and called back a few days later saying that another LCD vendor came in with a similar product that would cost in the low $5 range. Red flags immediately went up in my mind. Something was not right about this cheap LCD display. The display was similar, but upon inspection there were some ‘strings’ attached.

This is critical if you plan to build your product for the next few years. You will need to purchase more of these exact LCD displays in the future. When that time comes and you find out that the LCD modules are discontinued, you are in deep trouble. Your only option is to redesign your product for the current LCD.

Redesigns are not only very costly, but they also take a good deal of time. All this time your assembly lines are stalled and your sales people have nothing to sell.

Keep in mind that if you plan to repair your customer’s product, it is critical to have a supply of the original LCD. You cannot use a new LCD in an old product in the same way you cannot use a VHS tape (for those of you over the age of 20) in a blue ray player.

A simple tip is to do a little research on the product. Google can be your best friend. When someone offers you a screaming deal on a cheap LCD display, type in the part # and manufacture into Google; you may quickly find out why the prices are so cheap.

There are companies that contact us to buy our surplus/returns. These companies are providing a valuable service by keeping displays out of the landfills. If you need to be able to purchase the exact same LCD in the future, stay away from refurbished units. Once they are gone, there are no rain checks. Many of these displays can be found on eBay and other online auctions.

FOB means Freight On Board. In other words, when it comes time to pay the freight bill, how much will it cost? Are you paying to bring in the parts all the way from the Far East? Or does the quote include the cost to bring them to your door step.

Focus Displays Solutions prefers to include the cost of the freight of those component parts from the Far East to Chandler, AZ. This way the customer only has to pay for the shipping from Arizona to their location.

That engineer quickly realized that asking the three critical questions makes all the difference in the price of the product! Getting cheap LCD displays is not always a mistake, just remember to ask questions and really think through whether this is an investment or an expendable item.

Last year, consumers bought 13.5 million flat-panel monitors, more than double the 6.4 million shipped in 2000, said Rhoda Alexander, director of monitor research at Stanford Resources-iSuppli. In 2002, 23.5 million are expected find their way to consumers and businesses, fueled in part by the cool factor and by efforts of Dell Computer, Apple Computer and others to promote the space- and energy-saving screens.

Unfortunately for the industry, growth alone doesn"t translate directly to profit. Because of excess factory capacity and price wars in 2001, many manufacturers involved in the industry had to sell their products below cost.

But that scenario is likely to change this year, and for consumers that"s not a good thing. Increasing costs of components and rising consumer demand will likely lead to sporadic shortages, fewer discounts and higher prices on select products. Continued heavy demand could lead to profits for manufacturers. Then again, profits could be eroded through intense competition and by increasing factory capacity.

Bruce Berkoff, executive vice president at LCD maker LG Philips LCD, said that he"s been predicting a shortage for some time and sees it as part of a cycle that consists of two-year periods of oversupply and two-year periods of shortage, causing price fluctuations. Berkoff anticipates an industrywide shortage as early as mid-2002 that will last through 2003.

Berkoff expects prices for 15-inch LCD monitors to increase from around $200 to $300 now to up to--but not over--$500 this year. He also expects 17-inch and 18-inch displays to become more mainstream with prices ranging from $700 to $900.

Although flat-panel displays have been around for years, high prices kept them from the mainstream of the consumer market. A low-end 14-inch flat panel for a desktop computer, for instance, cost about $2,000 in 1997. A shortage of LCD glass, partly driven by growing demand for notebooks and handheld devices in the late 1990s, prompted makers to invest in glass plants in Taiwan and Korea in 1998 and 1999.

"The California energy crisis, whether real or manufactured, had a tremendous impact on LCDs. I received lots of calls from government agencies asking about them," said Alexander, who added that the energy savings "for a large corporate account makes a significant difference."

Although supply still outstrips demand, the LCD glut is expected to begin to dry up and prices are likely to rise. Unlike other PC products, which only go down in price, flat panel prices have jumped occasionally in the past. "LCD is one of the few (markets) where things have actually gone up in price," said Bob O"Donnell, an analyst with IDC.

Driving the demand are notebooks, which are becoming a larger percentage of the overall PC market. Consumer electronics devices that use LCD screens, such as cell phones and handhelds, use small screens and thus haven"t affected supply very much.

Another consumer electronics product category that may affect supply in the future is televisions with LCDs. Berkoff predicts this market will reach seven million units annually by 2005.

will not be able to supply LCD glass substrate until February or March, according to reports from Asian newspapers and analysts. The company"s customers include LCD producers Fujitsu, Samsung Electronics, International Display Technology, Chi Mei Optoeletronics and HannStar Display.

At the same time, other variables exist. An expansion of LCD manufacturing facilities in Korea from Sharp, Samsung and LG Philips means that more supply is on the horizon. And like in 2000, an influx of products could depress prices. (Samsung and other LCD panel manufacturers take glass and other components and manufacture the LCD panel. The panels then get shipped to notebook or monitor makers, which can be sister subsidiaries and which incorporate the LCD panel into monitors).

LCD manufacturers are working on other types of display technology, such as organic light-emitting diode displays. But it will be at least 10 years before any of them can replace LCDs.

I’m hearing from some industry friends that LCD display panel prices are rising – which on the surface likely seems incongruous, given the economic slowdown and widespread indications that a lot of 2020 and 2021 display projects went on hold because of COVID-19.

On the other hand, people are watching a lot more TV, and I saw a guy at Costco the other day with two big-ass LCD TVs on his trolley. And a whole bunch of desktop monitors were in demand in 2020 to facilitate Work From Home. So demand for LCD displays is up outside of commercial purposes.

The Korean business portal BusinessKorea says one explanation was a power outage that shut down a big glass substrate factory in Japan, which was serious enough that the plant will only get back to normal sometime in this quarter.

Continuing strong demand and concerns about a glass shortage resulting from NEG’s power outage have led to a continuing increase in LCD TV panel prices in Q1. Announcements by the Korean panel makers that they will maintain production of LCDs and delay their planned shutdown of LCD lines has not prevented prices from continuing to rise.

Panel prices increased more than 20% for selected TV sizes in Q3 2020 compared to Q2, and by 27% in Q4 2020 compared to Q3, and we now expect that average LCD TV panel prices in Q1 2021 will increase by another 9%.

Prices for every size of TV panel will increase in Q1 at a slower rate, ranging from 4% for 75” to 13% for 43”. Although we continue to expect that the long-term downward trend will resume in the second quarter of 2021, we no longer expect that panel prices will come close to the all-time lows seen earlier this year. The situation remains dynamic, and the pandemic may continue to affect both supply and demand.

TV panel prices however, continued to rise at an ‘unprecedented’ rate again, far ahead of our expectations, and panel producers do not seem to be hesitant about continuing to push prices further.

Does that mean they will stop buying and face losing market share to those that are willing to pay higher prices to see unit volume growth? Eventually, but heading into the holidays it doesn’t seem likely this year, so we expect TV panel prices to rise again in December.

It may seem odd in the face of stalled economies and stalled AV projects, but the costs of LCD display products are on the rise, according to a report from Digital Supply Chain Consulting, or DSCC.

Demand for LCD products remains strong , says DSCC, at the same time as shortages are deepening for glass substrates and driver integrated circuits. Announcements by the Korean panel makers that they will maintain production of LCDs and delay their planned shutdown of LCD lines has not prevented prices from continuing to rise.

I assume, but absolutely don’t know for sure, that panel pricing that affects the much larger consumer market must have a similar impact on commercial displays, or what researchers seem to term public information displays.

Panel prices increased more than 20% for selected TV sizes in Q3 2020 compared to Q2, and by 27% in Q4 2020 compared to Q3, we now expect that average LCD TV panel prices in Q1 2021 will increase by another 12%.

The inflection point for this cycle, the month of the most significant M/M price increases, was passed in September 2020, and the price increases have been slowing down each month since then, but the January increase averaged 4.1%. Prices in February 2021 have reached levels last seen exactly three years ago in February 2018.

All that said, LCD panels are way less costly, way lighter and slimmer, and generally look way better than the ones being used 10 years ago, so prices is a relative problem.

Samsung Electronics has been a driving force in this development as they dominate the Android market. Aside from last year’s smartwatch, Apple hasn’t been as enthusiastic in its adoption of the technology. Its biggest Android rival on the other hand, developed its very own Super AMOLED and has been supplying other gadget manufacturers with the display panels.

The report says that prices are likely to keep going down as Samsung is ramping up the game with new production facilities. If Samsung manages to keep up the demand for AMOLED displays, which seems likely if the price keeps going down, then the numbers keep falling. Consider it a positive loop.

Of course, there’s no guarantee that AMOLED will keep its position forever. If Apple decides to keep going for LCD displays, it will likely also limit how far down the AMOLED display prices reach.

Prices for all TV panel sizes fluctuated and are forecast to fluctuate between 2020 and 2022. The period from March 2020 to July 2021 saw the biggest price increases, when a 65" UHD panel cost between 171 and 288 U.S. dollars. iFixit has been offering OLED screens for those who would like to tackle repairs on their own. Those go for around $100 less than what Apple charges for an official screen replacement but now, it’s started offering LCD replacement for iPhone X, XS, and XS Max. It’s an interesting downgrade from OLED but some on a budget with DIY interest might find it’s a great option.

we’re now offering an LCD screen option for the iPhone X, XS, and XS Max. These LCDs (and their Fix Kits) are less than half the price of the OLED models we sell. They’re a little darker (about 50 nits worth), the resolution is a little lower, and the colors and contrast ratio won’t be quite the same.

But you might remember that, until a couple years ago, most phones had LCD displays, including phones you probably loved. Apple notably stuck with LCD displays while Samsung was experimenting with early OLED, and Apple still uses LCDs in its iPhone 8 and XR models.

Indeed, it’s like turning your X or XS into a XR, display-wise anyway. iFixit’s new LCD options run $75 for the X, $85 for the XS, and then jump up to $165 for the XS Max.

iFixit highlights “these LCD replacements are hand-tested in the USA to our rigorous quality standards, and we back them up with a lifetime warranty.”

Outdoor screens are installed in areas exposed to rain and outdoors. This implies that they require protections to improve water-resistance and therefore they are slightly more expensive than indoor screens

These screens are installed in covered areas, they are not exposed to rain or the weather. They do not require specific sealing protections and therefore can be more economical.

As a comparative example, this is what happens in tourist areas where the “fares” of a bar vary if the client is a tourist or a local, taking advantage of the supposed lack of knowledge the occasional visitor has. Do they treat you like a tourist when you ask for a LED screen budget and offer you high prices with great eloquent speeches about quality?

You can get extremely detailed with pricing. Some owners leave nothing for granted and account for things like their shop"s overhead, time on press, capacity, impressions, number of colors, t-shirt costs and so on – you absolutely should account for those nitty-gritty details. But that"s not all there is to pricing.

That t-shirt may cost you just $1.50. But there is a real labor cost for procuring, processing, and printing the shirts in your shop. This fixed cost does notdepend on how much you paid for the t-shirt.

You should never offer a customer a screen printing quote for a job that you don"t understand. This is why we can"t tell you exactly how much you should charge: there are so many variables that come into play. Each and every shop is unique, and each job is unique on top of that.

If you have more than one print location, it"s like you"re printing 2 shirts.Removing the shirt from the press and replacing it for another print location takes more time and labor.

Don"t discourage multiple print locations. Correctly raise your prices for the additional labor, supplies, and complexity that multiple print locations introduce.

So how should screen printers price colors? Build a "plateau" in your pricing model.One color should always be affordable. The jump to two colors is sharp, but not so sharp that customers can"t get what they want. And the jump between four colors and eleven colors should be massive!

A two-color print job with a 60 second flash is not the same as a two-color job with no flashing. Flashing will take more time, introduce more risk, and present more possible production problems.

But if you"re a small shop (or just starting out) doing a four-color job with flashing on 75 pieces will take a ridiculously long time to print manually.

Difficult customers and jobs drag your team down and cut into your profits. It"s administrative and customer service work tacked on to design and art work.

On the other hand: they can be costly, they"re risky, they might lose you money and they can easily ruin customer relationships if they don"t turn out well. Bad reviews are a huge risk with this kind of job, so carefully consider whether you can realistically handle the extra workload for a needy customer or a really challenging print job.

Instead of having one price tier for 24 to 48 garments, you price out every garment quantity individually. This way, your customers are not incentivized to order "just a dozen more to get a discount." They get the appropriate discount every time. This prevents Mark Coudray"s "print shop pricing trap" where your quantity breaks actually work against you (see the video for a further explanation of how this works).

Cover your costs: pay your workers, yourself, your bills and everything else. Don"t starve your business because you"re worried about competitors offering a slightly lower price.

You"re probably not going to be able to compete with Custom Ink for market share. You may not even be able to compete with your rival shop, much less a local contract printer on price.

The #1 question screen printers and print shops have is "How do I set my prices?" This is a topic as controversial as it is difficult – every shop we talk to at Printavo has a different strategy for their screen printing pricing.

We"ve spent several months developing a way to encourage responsible pricing. We are not accounting or pricing experts, but we knew that we could add something valuable: what if we could help print shops generate a price matrix for every job they print?

Tell us how long setup and break-down will likely take.How long do you estimate spending on administration (sales, communication, data entry, etc.), artwork, and pre/post press activities (screen burning and reclaim, setup, etc.)?

The first step is defining the percentage profit you want to make.You select a percentage from the drop-down menu. The higher the percentage, the more the tool will charge per screen printed impression (and the higher your shop’s suggested hourly rates and daily revenue targets will be).

How this number is used:this value is used to calculate an idealized cost per impression. Since you are not inputting your revenue – and this is aforward-lookingcalculation – we provide you a “target revenue” based on your costs plus the desired percentage of revenueabovethose costs.

Impressions per hour. This is an estimate of your production capacity. Don’t think of this as how manyshirtsyou can print in an hour, think of this as how many times you do animpression(in other words: dragging the squeegee across the screen).

Tip:calculate the number of impressions for a job, and then time how long printing takes. Do this repeatedly to get an estimate for how many impressions per hour are likely in your shop.

Total impressions per hour. Unless you are planning on operating more than one press for this job, you don’t need to alter this field. If you are using one press for the job, this value should be the same as your impressions per hour.

Utilization rate. This is the most important metric in the spreadsheet. Your shop’s utilization rate is the percentage of time your presses are actually printing. We have discussed shop utilization with dozens of shop owners and industry consultants and found that shop utilization tends to be no greater than 40% (and, typically, is much closer to 20-30%).

Number of presses in operation.This is NOT how many presses are in your shop. This is how many presses will be in use forthis particular job.Typically, this should just be left as “1.”Changing this value will alter the “Total impressions per hour” cell and affect your pricing.

Tip: these values may seem higher than you anticipate. It is worth examining how utilization plays into your shop’s hourly rate: as utilization goes up, your hourly rate goes down (you’re more efficient per hour).

These are highly idealized values, but they can still be useful as a benchmark to check against. You can do basic back-of-the-envelope calculations about how long a job will take and compare the price to your revenue targets. This could help you know whether to take a job, raise or lower the price of a quote, or subcontract a money-losing job.

"How do I know what to charge as a markup?"You can choose a percentage markup from the drop-down menu. It will calculate the specific dollar amount and display it beneath the drop-down menu. Ultimately, the markup you charge is based on your judgment.

lcd displays do not pricelist

Samsung Display will stop producing LCD panels by the end of the year. The display maker currently runs two LCD production lines in South Korea and two in China, according to Reuters. Samsung tells The Verge that the decision will accelerate the company’s move towards quantum dot displays, while ZDNetreports that its future quantum dot TVs will use OLED rather than LCD panels.

The decision comes as LCD panel prices are said to be falling worldwide. Last year, Nikkei reported that Chinese competitors are ramping up production of LCD screens, even as demand for TVs weakens globally. Samsung Display isn’t the only manufacturer to have closed down LCD production lines. LG Display announced it would be ending LCD production in South Korea by the end of the 2020 as well.

Last October Samsung Display announced a five-year 13.1 trillion won (around $10.7 billion) investment in quantum dot technology for its upcoming TVs, as it shifts production away from LCDs. However, Samsung’s existing quantum dot or QLED TVs still use LCD panels behind their quantum dot layer. Samsung is also working on developing self-emissive quantum-dot diodes, which would remove the need for a separate layer.

Samsung’s investment in OLED TVs has also been reported by The Elec. The company is no stranger to OLED technology for handhelds, but it exited the large OLED panel market half a decade ago, allowing rival LG Display to dominate ever since.

Although Samsung Display says that it will be able to continue supplying its existing LCD orders through the end of the year, there are questions about what Samsung Electronics, the largest TV manufacturer in the world, will use in its LCD TVs going forward. Samsung told The Vergethat it does not expect the shutdown to affect its LCD-based QLED TV lineup. So for the near-term, nothing changes.

One alternative is that Samsung buys its LCD panels from suppliers like TCL-owned CSOT and AUO, which already supply panels for Samsung TVs. Last year The Elec reported that Samsung could close all its South Korean LCD production lines, and make up the difference with panels bought from Chinese manufacturers like CSOT, which Samsung Display has invested in.

lcd displays do not pricelist

If you are looking for a new display, you should consider the differences between CRT and LCD monitors. Choose the type of monitor that best serves your specific needs, the typical applications you use, and your budget.

Require less power - Power consumption varies greatly with different technologies. CRT displays are somewhat power-hungry, at about 100 watts for a typical 19-inch display. The average is about 45 watts for a 19-inch LCD display. LCDs also produce less heat.

Smaller and weigh less - An LCD monitor is significantly thinner and lighter than a CRT monitor, typically weighing less than half as much. In addition, you can mount an LCD on an arm or a wall, which also takes up less desktop space.

More adjustable - LCD displays are much more adjustable than CRT displays. With LCDs, you can adjust the tilt, height, swivel, and orientation from horizontal to vertical mode. As noted previously, you can also mount them on the wall or on an arm.

Less eye strain - Because LCD displays turn each pixel off individually, they do not produce a flicker like CRT displays do. In addition, LCD displays do a better job of displaying text compared with CRT displays.

Better color representation - CRT displays have historically represented colors and different gradations of color more accurately than LCD displays. However, LCD displays are gaining ground in this area, especially with higher-end models that include color-calibration technology.

More responsive - Historically, CRT monitors have had fewer problems with ghosting and blurring because they redrew the screen image faster than LCD monitors. Again, LCD manufacturers are improving on this with displays that have faster response times than they did in the past.

Multiple resolutions - If you need to change your display"s resolution for different applications, you are better off with a CRT monitor because LCD monitors don"t handle multiple resolutions as well.

So now that you know about LCD and CRT monitors, let"s talk about how you can use two monitors at once. They say, "Two heads are better than one." Maybe the same is true of monitors!
