Typewriter with stamina. Acer"s 14-incher only brings a weak processor but offers very long battery runtimes. The price of about 280 Euros (~$310) and the included one-year license for Office 365 Personal might make the notebook attractive for many users.
The success of the Chromebooks led to several manufacturers offering Windows-based alternatives. These do not have the limitations of Chromebooks (cannot be used without Internet connection; no desktop applications). The Cloudbook 14 is such an alternative. Computers like the HP Stream 13, the HP Chromebook 14, and the Toshiba CB30-B-104 belong to its competitors.
Speakers: Stereo, Keyboard: Chiclet, Keyboard Light: no, McAfee LiveSafe Internet Security (trial version), MS Office 365 Personal (one-year license), 24 Months Warranty, fanless
Design, material, and color of the Cloudbook 14 are identical to its 11.6-inch sibling"s. Apart from the black display frame, Acer uses a slim, gray plastic case. The lid and the underside are textured. The top side of the base unit is roughened. The build quality is flawless. However, the stability should be improved - the base unit twists too easily. Thus, the front left foot of the laptop lifts up when pressure is applied right beside the keyboard.
Moreover, the Cloudbook 14 and the Cloudbook 11 share the same connectivity. One of two USB ports supports the USB 3.0 standard. The ports sit on both sides towards the rear. As a result, the space beside the palm rests remains free of cables. The memory-card reader works slowly. It transfers 250 JPG image files (about 5 MB each) at only 18.6 MB/s. We always test memory-card readers with our reference card (Toshiba Exceria Pro SDXC 64 GB UHS-II).
The Cloudbook comes with a chiclet keyboard without light. The flat, slightly roughened keys feature a short travel and a clear pressure point. The keyboard slightly springs when typing, but this was not disturbing. Since it is a 14-inch device, keys and key gaps are bigger than in comparable, yet smaller devices like, for example, the Acer Cloudbook 11. As a result, the typing experience is much more comfortable. If you are thinking about buying an 11.6-inch notebook, you should reflect on buying a 14-inch computer like the Cloudbook 14 instead. The multi-touch capable ClickPad of the Cloudbook takes up 10.1 x 6.1 cm. So, it offers a lot of space for gesture control. Fingers glide easily on the smooth surface. The touchpad features a short travel and a clear pressure point.
Acer has equipped the Cloudbook with a matte 14-inch display with a native resolution of 1366x768 pixels. The brightness (213.1 cd/m²) is too low for a mobile device meant to be used in all kinds of places. In view of the price point, the contrast (491:1) is okay. The display shows PWM flickering @ 200 Hz at a brightness level of 90% and lower. This might cause eye problems and/or headaches in sensitive people.
ℹDisplay response times show how fast the screen is able to change from one color to the next. Slow response times can lead to afterimages and can cause moving objects to appear blurry (ghosting). Gamers of fast-paced 3D titles should pay special attention to fast response times.↔ Response Time Black to White
The Cloudbook features a TN panel with narrow viewing angles. Thus, it is not possible to read from the screen from all positions. Moreover, the computer is not really apt for outdoor use. Outdoor use is only possible when the sky is overcast or in the shade. Otherwise, the display is too dark.
With the Cloudbook 14, Acer offers a 14-inch notebook for simple office and Internet applications. In addition, it can play videos. Our test model costs about 280 Euros (~$310). We have not found other variants.
With Intel"s Celeron N3050 (Braswell) dual-core processor, a weak CPU works inside the Acer computer. Its performance is sufficient for simple office and Internet applications. Those who want to run more demanding applications should buy a different computer. The Celeron works at up to 2.16 GHz in mains operation as well as on battery.
The system runs smoothly and we did not observe problems in our test. The results of the PCMark benchmarks correspond to the performance of the used SoC. Alike all Braswell notebooks, the Cloudbook 14 also performs better than comparable Bay Trail devices (Braswell predecessor). This is thanks to the significantly faster Braswell GPUs, while the CPU performance of Bay Trail and Braswell are almost the same. It is not possible to improve the system performance of the Cloudbook.
The Cloudbook comes with an eMMC storage module with a capacity of 32 GB. Just under 15 GB of the total capacity is free out-of-the-box. The transfer rates are on a normal level for this kind of memory. It is not handy to expand the storage capacity with an SD card. SD cards stick out of the card reader by about 5 mm and are not locked in the card reader. Nevertheless, users will have enough storage space available: The buyer of the computer gets 1 TB storage space from Microsoft"s Cloud service OneDrive (free of charge for one year).
Graphics are done by Intel"s HD Graphics (Braswell) GPU. It supports DirectX 12 and works at up to 600 MHz. The Braswell graphics core is significantly faster than its Bay Trail predecessor. As a result, it performs significantly better in the 3DMark benchmarks - albeit on a low level.
Even though the Cloudbook only brings a weak processor, it can be used for video playback. This is thanks to the decoder integrated into the GPU, which takes load from the processor when playing videos. It supports all usual formats including H.265 (successor of the H.264 format, which is wide-spread today), which allows smaller files at the same image quality. The CPU load was below 20% when we played our test video (4k, H.265, 60 fps).
Games suitable for the Cloudbook can be found in the casual games section in the Windows Store. The hardware is much too weak for modern games like Hitman. Even games like FIFA 16 with only moderate hardware requirements, do not achieve smooth frame rates. In addition, the Cloudbook does not offer enough storage capacity for most games.
In our stress test, the Cloudbook behaves the same way in mains operation and on battery. CPU and GPU work at full speed during the first minute and are slowed down afterwards. The processor works at 1.2 GHz and the graphics core at 320 MHz. The computer does not get especially warm. It only exceeds 40 °C in a single measurement segment.
(+) The average temperature for the upper side under maximal load is 31.2 °C / 88 F, compared to the average of 29.5 °C / 85 F for the devices in the class Office.
(+) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 39.9 °C / 104 F, compared to the average of 34.1 °C / 93 F, ranging from 21.2 to 62.5 °C for the class Office.
The stereo speakers of the Cloudbook sit on the front edge of the underside. They produce a thin sound without bass. You won"t enjoy listening to them for long periods of time. External speakers or headphones are recommended for a better sound.
The Cloudbook comes with a weak SoC. As a result, the power consumption is quite low - regardless of the load. When running idle, we measure a maximum of 7.3 Watt. During the stress test, the power consumption increases to 15.9 Watt - albeit, only in the first minute. Afterwards, the CPU and GPU throttle and the energy demand is about 11.5 Watt. The power adapter is rated at 45 Watt.
Currently we use the Metrahit Energy, a professional single phase power quality and energy measurement digital multimeter, for our measurements. Find out more about it here. All of our test methods can be found here.
In our real-world Wi-Fi test, we simulate web surfing. The profile "balanced" is active and the display brightness is set at about 150 cd/m². The Cloudbook achieves a very good battery life of 10:31 h. The battery with big capacity (55 Wh) pays off here.
The 14-inch Cloudbook delivers sufficient performance for simple office and Internet applications. Thanks to the decoder integrated in the graphics core, the computer can also play videos. In contrast to its Chromebook competitors, the Cloudbook allows installing / using usual desktop software. However, the storage capacity is limited. About 15 GB is free out-of-the-box. The Cloudbook works silently and gets hardly warmer. The display will not win any prizes, but it is alright in view of the price point. It delivers an acceptable contrast and a matte surface. However, the brightness should be higher. The Cloudbook 14 is meant to be a mobile typing and web surfing machine. The computer entirely meets this application profile. The battery life is sufficient for a day at school / university. It is supplemented by a decent keyboard. On top of that, a one-year license for MS Office 365 Personal is included. At a price of about 280 Euros (~$310), the bundle is affordable.

Chromebooks are low-priced machines made to run Google"s cloud-based Chrome OS, but what"s a Cloudbook? A Cloudbook is Acer"s idea of an inexpensive everyday computer that"s also designed to live in the cloud, but runs Windows 10 instead of Chrome OS. In other words, the netbook trend has come around again. The 14-inch Acer Aspire One Cloudbook starts at just $199 ($249 as reviewed) and comes with an Intel Celeron CPU, 2GB of RAM, 64GB of storage and a free 1TB of cloud storage on OneDrive for a year. But when you dive beneath those pedestrian specs, the Cloudbook hides the endurance of a marathon runner. With this combination of price and battery, is the Cloudbook a Chromebook killer?
Constructed out of nondescript dark-gray plastic, the Acer Cloudbook is the Eeyore of notebooks: dreary but reliable. The top and bottom feature a dimpled texture, and while it"s not very exciting to touch, the construction felt relatively sturdy.
Inside, the Cloudbook switches to a matte-black bezel surrounding the screen, with a return to dark gray (this time with a matte finish) on its deck. There"s not a lot of flair to the Cloudbook, but really, since the price starts at $199, I don"t mind.
The 14-inch Cloudbook measures 13.4 x 9.2 x 0.34-0.7 inches and weighs 3.53 pounds, which is a little heavier than the 14-inch Lenovo IdeaPad 100 (13.4 x 9.3 x 0.8 inches and 3.2 pounds), but otherwise quite similar in size. Toshiba"s 13-inch Chromebook 2 is expectedly smaller and lighter, at 8.4 x 12.6 x 0.76 inches and 2.97 pounds, although the 2014 HP Stream 13 is quite comparable, at 13.1 x 9 x 0.77 and 3.4 pounds.
The Cloudbook registered 244 nits of brightness, which was dimmer than both the Toshiba Chromebook 2 (378 nits) and the Lenovo IdeaPad 100 (260 nits), but brighter than the truly dim HP Stream 13 from 2014 (166 nits).
Color accuracy wasn"t great, as the Cloudbook earned a Delta-E rating of 3.78 (numbers closer to zero are better). This put it well behind the Chromebook 2, which scored 0.9.
The Cloudbook"s biggest failing was its color range, which covered just 53.4 percent of the sRGB spectrum. That"s significantly lower than the scores of the Chromebook 2 (110 percent) and the HP Stream 13 (79 percent).
Sound quality on the Acer Cloudbook is its weakest trait. The notebook"s audio range is focused almost entirely in the upper mids. Highs were generally tinny, and the lows had almost no impact. When I listened to Stan Bush"s "You"ve Got the Touch," the cymbals sounded like they were made out of aluminum foil, while the snares and bass sounded shallow and far away.
On the Laptop Mag Heat Test (15 minutes of streaming HD video from Hulu), the top of the Acer Cloudbook stayed cool, measuring 80.5 degrees Fahrenheit on the touchpad and 83 degrees between the G and H keys. Unfortunately, things were less comfortable on the bottom of the laptop, where the Cloudbook surpassed our 95-degree comfort threshold, with a reading of 97 degrees. That"s hardly a deal breaker, though.
With an HDMI port, SD card reader, combo headphone/mic jack and just two USB ports (one USB 3.0, one USB 2.0), Acer"s Cloudbook is one port short of what you typically get on a 14-inch system.
With a 1.6-GHz Intel Celeron N3050 CPU, 2GB of RAM and just 64GB of storage, the Cloudbook was never going to be a processing powerhouse. However, if you need it just to browse the Web, check emails, or fiddle around in a spreadsheet or two, Acer"s Cloudbook is totally capable. When I had 10 more or tabs open in Chrome or Edge (Microsoft"s replacement for Internet Explorer), some lag started to appear, such as waiting slightly for text to appear when typing in a search bar.
Using Geekbench 3, which tests overall system performance, a 1,646 score from the Cloudbook trailed both the Lenovo Ideapad 100 (2,446 with an Intel N2840 CPU) and the 2014 HP Stream 13 (1,802 also with an Intel N2840 CPU).
When put up against Toshiba"s recently revamped Chromebook 2 using the Sunspider JavaScript benchmark, the Cloudbook took longer to complete the test, at 432.4 ms, versus 324.9 ms for the Toshiba. However, it did beat the HP Stream 13 from 2014, which had a time of 522.3 ms.
On the bright side, the 64GB of eMMC storage recorded transfer speeds of 48 MBps, which were faster than those of the IdeaPad 100"s 500GB HDD (34.4 MBps) and the 2014 HP Stream 13 (27.2 MBps).
When we used OpenOffice to match 20,000 names and addresses, the Cloudbook finished in 15 minutes and 8 seconds. That"s almost exactly the same as the HP Stream 13 from 2014 (15:12) and a few minutes faster than the IdeaPad 100 (18:06).
We then timed how long it took the Cloudbook to open a 69MB Word document in OpenOffice, and the Cloubook"s time of 36.5 seconds isn"t bad. In a recent roundup of sub-$500 notebooks, the average time was 40.2 seconds. However, when we repeated the test, this time with our file-copy test also running in the background, the Cloudbook took a much longer 1 minute and 39 seconds.
When we tested graphics performance, the Cloudbook scored 18,605 in 3DMark"s Ice Storm Unlimited benchmark, which was better than the IdeaPad 100 (15,481) and the HP Stream 13 (10,084). When I played Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft, I was able to get through a game at 1366 x 768 and medium settings with only a few instances of lag or stuttering.
This is the standout feature of Acer"s Cloudbook, a battery that lasts almost 15 hours on a charge. To be exact, on Laptop Mag"s Battery Test (Web surfing over Wi-Fi at 100 nits), it took 14 hours and 43 minutes for the 14-inch Cloudbook to finally run out of juice. That"s more than 4 hours longer than Toshiba"s revamped Chromebook 2, which already has an impressive life of 10:05, double the battery life of the 2014 HP Stream 13 (6:26) and almost triple that of Lenovo"s IdeaPad 100 (4:45).
Our $250 14-inch Acer Aspire One Cloudbook is the most expensive model in the range, featuring an Intel Celeron N3050 CPU, 2GB of RAM and 64GB of flash storage. If you can do with less onboard drive space, there"s a cheaper, $199 model featuring just 32GB of eMMC memory. For those who prefer a smaller and more portable machine, Acer also offers an 11-inch Cloudbook starting at $170, although it comes with just 16GB of local storage.
The Cloudbook features a standard one-year warranty and comes preloaded with a superclean install of Windows 10. To help make your transition to the cloud easier, Acer also includes a free one-year subscription to Microsoft Office and 1TB of storage on Microsoft OneDrive. And because you"re running Windows, you aren"t limited to apps from Google"s Web store like you are on a Chromebook.
Acer"s Cloudbook really makes you wonder: Why get a Chromebook? The best thing Chromebooks had going for them was their low price, but with the Cloudbook you get nearly 15 hours of battery life for $249, or less. Besides, if you need Chrome in your life, there"s nothing stopping you from installing Google"s Web browser and getting the same basic experience, but with the added flexibility of full Windows compatibility.
A little more RAM would help smooth out some of the stuttering, and I wish the screen were a little more colorful. But the comfy keyboard and solid, if uninspired build quality make for a great budget machine, whether you"re working offline or in the cloud.
Compared to our top pick, the Lenovo 5i Chromebook (14″) is a bit bulkier and heavier, it has less memory for multitasking and a more limited processor, and it lacks the convenience of a touchscreen. It also has mediocre battery life at around 8.5 hours.
The Lenovo Chromebook Flex 5 (13″) is an older, now-discontinued version of our top pick with an Intel Core i3-10110U processor and 4 GB of RAM. It has one less year of update support and isn’t as good at multitasking, but it’s otherwise identical to our top pick and a decent option if you find it on sale for $300 or less.
The Acer Chromebook Spin 514 (CP514-1H-R4HQ) is larger and heavier than our top picks, it typically costs a bit more, and its processor delivers lower performance when the laptop is unplugged. It’s still fast enough for everyday computer tasks, but we don’t recommend it at its usual price of $500.
The Acer Chromebook 314 (CB314-3HT-P6QW) has an N6000 processor just like the Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 3i Chromebook (15″). But the Chromebook 314 costs around $460, and we don’t recommend spending more than $400 on a Chromebook that struggles to run a Zoom call and a document at the same time.
The keyboard on the Acer Chromebook Spin 314 (CP314-1HN-P138) felt rattly and cheap. This laptop is heavy compared with our top pick, too, and during our tests its processor struggled with a video call and a document open at the same time.
We previously named the HP Chromebook x360 14c-ca0065nr and Chromebook x360 14c-ca0053dx as picks because of their great keyboard and trackpad, their fast performance, and their 14-inch touchscreen, but both models have been discontinued. HP has replaced those models with the updated 14c-cc0013dx and 14c-cc0047nr, but the new versions’ screen has a noticeably yellow-green tint. We don’t recommend either new model unless it’s on sale and none of our other picks are available.
The Samsung Galaxy Chromebook 2 with a Celeron 5205U is too slow for its $550 full price—or even its $400 sale price. Our top picks offer better performance for a similar price.
In our tests, the Acer Chromebook Spin 513 (CP513-1H-S338) and its ARM-based processor struggled to run a Zoom call and work on a spreadsheet at the same time. Its screen had a blue cast and looked washed out, too.
The Asus Chromebook Flip C433 (C433TA-AS384T) is a great Chromebook with one extremely frustrating flaw: The lid is held shut by surprisingly aggressive magnets. Even with two hands, I found it a struggle to open the lid every single time, and when I asked other people to use the laptop, I overheard some choice words from them (I used plenty of my own each time I tried to pry it apart). The reviewer for Chrome Unboxed encountered the same issue, calling this Chromebook “by far the most difficult laptop I’ve ever tried to open”; we also tried a floor model at Best Buy, and it had the same problem. Its support runs out in June 2026, so we don’t recommend it over newer models with years more support.
In a previous version of this guide, the Asus Chromebook Flip C434 (C434TA-DSM4T) was a pick because of its solid performance, reliable trackpad and backlit keyboard, excellent battery life, and spacious 14-inch screen with tiny borders. But we no longer recommend the C434 because we’ve seen a higher-than-typical number of owner reports indicating hardware issues, including reports of unresponsive touchscreens, displays that won’t turn on, defective keyboards and trackpads, and Bluetooth problems. We’ve also encountered display glitches on our own review unit. Its support runs out in June 2026.
The Lenovo ThinkPad C14 Gen 1 Chromebook is a great Chromebook with a top-notch keyboard and trackpad, but there’s no reason to buy it over the Samsung Galaxy Chromebook 2 or the Acer Chromebook Spin 714. Both models are smaller, lighter, and less expensive than the ThinkPad, and the Acer Spin 714 has superior battery life and a taller aspect-ratio screen.
The HP Elite Dragonfly Chromebook is a wonderful Chromebook. It has a thin and light body, a vibrant 13.5-inch 1080p touchscreen, a comfortable backlit keyboard, and a huge responsive trackpad, and in our tests it offered excellent performance and around 10 hours of battery life. The Dragonfly also has guaranteed update support through June 2030, plus a useful array of ports, a responsive fingerprint reader, and a handy webcam cover. But it starts at $1,150, and you can get an excellent Windows ultrabook or a MacBook Air for that kind of money, or our upgrade Chromebook pick for much less than that.
The Asus Chromebook Flip CX5 (CX5400FMA-DN388T-S) is another great Chromebook with no major flaws, but at its typical price of $700 there’s no reason to buy it over the Samsung Galaxy Chromebook 2 or the Acer Chromebook Spin 713 (CP713-3W-5102).
Google’s Pixelbook Go was our previous upgrade pick because it’s compact and light and offers top-of-the-line build quality and long battery life. We still love this model—and it has a better webcam than the Samsung Galaxy Chromebook 2 does—but its support runs out in June 2026, two years sooner than support for the Galaxy Chromebook 2. Five years is the minimum lifespan we expect from a laptop, and we can’t recommend a high-end Chromebook with a shorter lifespan unless you feel comfortable installing ChromeOS Flex.
Although Lenovo’s ThinkPad C13 Yoga Chromebook (13″) is a great Chromebook, it typically costs around $650 for a fast-enough processor and is heavier and bulkier than our similarly priced upgrade pick. (We don’t recommend the model with an AMD Athlon processor, as it’s too slow.)
The Dell Latitude 5400 Chromebook Enterprise is not a Chromebook for most people. This business-focused Chromebook has a powerful Core i5-8365U processor, 8 GB of RAM, and 256 GB of storage, as well as a ton of ports. But it’s bulky, it weighs 3.24 pounds, and it typically costs around $900.
In our tests, the Acer Chromebook 315 (CB315-4HT) and its N6000 processor struggled with video calls and other simultaneous tasks. We also found that its keyboard wasn’t as nice to type on, and compared with the other 15-inch Chromebooks we tested, its screen was dim with a bluish tint.
The Lenovo 3i Chromebook (15″) provides even weaker performance because it has less RAM. The Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 3i Chromebook (15″) is a better option at this price.
The Acer Chromebook Spin 512 (R853TA) and Chromebook Spin 511 (R753T) are both very similar to the Chromebook 712 but are comparatively expensive for their slow performance and terrible displays.
Many budget models—including the Acer Chromebook 317 (CB317-1H-C994) and the Samsung Galaxy Chromebook Go—rely on the Intel Celeron N4500 processor, which is too slow for even light use.
Several different versions of the HP Chromebook x360 14b are available from various retailers. All of these models are similar to the x360 14—a now-discontinued model that we previously recommended—but Chrome Unboxed notes that they “sport lesser processors, not-so-premium displays and more budget-y build quality.” We couldn’t find any models with both a 1080p screen and a fast-enough processor.
The Lenovo Chromebook Duet is an inexpensive ChromeOS tablet that comes with a keyboard-and-kickstand cover. But I found the cramped keyboard impossible to adjust to—even as someone who adjusts to weird keyboards for a living. The processor was too slow for everyday work, as well, and the Duet lacks a headphone jack. Most people should spend a little more for our top Chromebook pick, the Flex 5i, unless you just really want a ChromeOS tablet.
Most Chromebooks with Intel’s N-series Pentium or Celeron processors feel too slow even in light use—on these machines, we experienced delays with just a handful of tabs open. For the same reason, we don’t recommend laptops with any ARM-based processors like those from MediaTek, Nvidia, Qualcomm, Rockchip, or Samsung. And we don’t consider any model with less than 4 GB of RAM.
A laptop should last at least five years, so we don’t recommend any Chromebooks with a support date that expires before 2026. This group includes formerly notable models such as the Acer Chromebook 11 C771T, the Asus Chromebook Flip C302 (C302CA-DH54), the Google Pixelbook, and the Samsung Chromebook Plus V2. Even if you find a good deal on one of these models used, they’ll stop receiving feature and security updates in less than five years, and at that point you’ll need to install ChromeOS Flex or upgrade your laptop.
