Flat-panel displays are thin panels of glass or plastic used for electronically displaying text, images, or video. Liquid crystal displays (LCD), OLED (organic light emitting diode) and microLED displays are not quite the same; since LCD uses a liquid crystal that reacts to an electric current blocking light or allowing it to pass through the panel, whereas OLED/microLED displays consist of electroluminescent organic/inorganic materials that generate light when a current is passed through the material. LCD, OLED and microLED displays are driven using LTPS, IGZO, LTPO, and A-Si TFT transistor technologies as their backplane using ITO to supply current to the transistors and in turn to the liquid crystal or electroluminescent material. Segment and passive OLED and LCD displays do not use a backplane but use indium tin oxide (ITO), a transparent conductive material, to pass current to the electroluminescent material or liquid crystal. In LCDs, there is an even layer of liquid crystal throughout the panel whereas an OLED display has the electroluminescent material only where it is meant to light up. OLEDs, LCDs and microLEDs can be made flexible and transparent, but LCDs require a backlight because they cannot emit light on their own like OLEDs and microLEDs.

Liquid-crystal display (or LCD) is a thin, flat panel used for electronically displaying information such as text, images, and moving pictures. They are usually made of glass but they can also be made out of plastic. Some manufacturers make transparent LCD panels and special sequential color segment LCDs that have higher than usual refresh rates and an RGB backlight. The backlight is synchronized with the display so that the colors will show up as needed. The list of LCD manufacturers:

Organic light emitting diode (or OLED displays) is a thin, flat panel made of glass or plastic used for electronically displaying information such as text, images, and moving pictures. OLED panels can also take the shape of a light panel, where red, green and blue light emitting materials are stacked to create a white light panel. OLED displays can also be made transparent and/or flexible and these transparent panels are available on the market and are widely used in smartphones with under-display optical fingerprint sensors. LCD and OLED displays are available in different shapes, the most prominent of which is a circular display, which is used in smartwatches. The list of OLED display manufacturers:

MicroLED displays is an emerging flat-panel display technology consisting of arrays of microscopic LEDs forming the individual pixel elements. Like OLED, microLED offers infinite contrast ratio, but unlike OLED, microLED is immune to screen burn-in, and consumes less power while having higher light output, as it uses LEDs instead of organic electroluminescent materials, The list of MicroLED display manufacturers:

LCDs are made in a glass substrate. For OLED, the substrate can also be plastic. The size of the substrates are specified in generations, with each generation using a larger substrate. For example, a 4th generation substrate is larger in size than a 3rd generation substrate. A larger substrate allows for more panels to be cut from a single substrate, or for larger panels to be made, akin to increasing wafer sizes in the semiconductor industry.

According to Taiwan media reports, South Korea’s Samsung Group has committed to purchasing 56 million LCD panels and shipping 48 million TV units this year. These figures would constitute a sharp increase – of 16.7% and 14.3%, respectively – compared to last year. These increases will be driven by Samsung purchasing more than 10 million LCD displays from Innolux and AUO, with the total LCD panel supply from both companies increasing 14% on last year’s total.

An important backdrop to this story is that Samsung Group will, in June this year, shut down its only LCD panel factory in South Korea and officially cease producing its own LCD panels. That move comes half a year earlier than expected, but the Group’s Image Display Division (VD) still requires panels and is therefore continuing to book shipments with foreign suppliers. This development is driving strong demand for LCD panels and provides an opportunity for the likes of Innolux and AUO to grow and become even bigger players in the industry.

AUO TV panel sales in the third quarter of last year dropped to 21%. The company’s chairman, Peng Shuanglang, has said that the proportion of TV panel shipments will remain at around 20% this year, with the main consideration being to continue serving TV brand customers. He stressed that AUO remains committed to its existing product portfolio, which is focused in large part on meeting long-term demand in the high-end TV market, but that the company’s business strategy is also placing increasing importance on the automotive market, where, by working directly with automakers, AUO is seen to have opportunities to expands its business opportunities and markets.

In a similar vein, the chairman of Innolux, Hong Jinyang, has said that, while there may not be the sudden demand witnessed last year, he is nonetheless cautiously optimistic about this year’s operation. Innolux has retained its high order, high value-added product layout. This strategy is one based on the production of high value-added products over the production of large quantities of standard products. Adherence to this strategy is likely to slow down the impact of panel prices.

Innolux’s General Manager, Yang Zhuxiang, has pointed out that the company will continue to pay close attention to international developments and has the ability to dynamically adjust its operations accordingly. At present, however, there remains high demand in the panel market. With the early withdrawal of Samsung from the LCD business, the market is under-occupied, with sustained demand but fewer suppliers, and the market price is expected to stabilize.

According to India"s latest report, Samsung"s Image Display Division purchased about 48 million panels in 2021 and shipped 42 million units. In 2022, meanwhile, it plans to purchase 56 million panels and ship 48 million units in 2022. The panels it purchases will be made up of 53 million OPEN Cell LCD TVs, 1 million QD OLED panels, and 2 million WOLED TV panels.

(Yicai Global) June 7 -- HKC Optoelectronics Technology has completed its pre-listing tutoring and is ready for an initial public offering, sources at China"s third-largest maker of liquid crystal display panels told Yicai Global.

HKC has LCD panel production bases in Chongqing and Mianyang in southwest China and Chuzhou in the east, and has formed a vertical industrial chain including LCD panels, light-emitting diode backlights, LCD modules and whole machine production.

The Shenzhen-based firm ranked third among Chinese companies for global display panel shipments last year, after BOE Technology Group and TCL China Star Optoelectronics Technology, according to data from Sigmaintell Consulting. HKC also accounted for 10.1 percent of the global television screen market, and 6.5 percent of the global display panel market.

But global LCD panel prices have been falling, posing a challenge for HKC"s short-term business outlook. According to research firm Omdia, since last September the average price of 43-inch LCD panels has dropped 46 percent, and for 55- and 65-inch panels prices are down 34 percent.

“Current prices pose a big challenge for all panel makers,” Zhang Hong, director of TV research at Sigmaintell, told Yicai Global, adding that losses are growing at some manufacturers of LCD TV panels.

Cinno Research’s Chief Analyst Zhou Hua told Yicai Global that HKC"s LCD panel production line has had a lot of support from the local government, but in the current economic environment it is harder to secure such high subsidies.

After the two months with the fastest price declines in the history of the industry in September and October, LCD TV panel prices continued to fall in November, but the pace of price decreases is slowing, and we expect that pattern to continue into 2022. After two months where the average decline in LCD TV panel prices exceeded 15%, the average decline in November among the seven TV sizes we track was “only” 6.4%. LCD TV panel prices have now lost most of the gains that they achieved in the long up-cycle from May 2020 to June 2021.

Continuing strong demand and concerns about a glass shortage resulting from NEG’s power outage have led to a continuing increase in LCD TV panel prices in Q1. Announcements by the Korean panel makers that they will maintain production of LCDs and delay their planned shutdown of LCD lines has not prevented prices from continuing to rise. Panel prices increased more than 20% for selected TV sizes in Q3 2020 compared to Q2, and by 27% in Q4 2020 compared to Q3, and we now expect that average LCD TV panel prices in Q1 2021 will increase by another 9%.

Samsung Display (SDC) shipped 86.3 million OLED panels for smartphones and smart wearable devices globally in third-quarter 2022, taking a worldwide market share of 62.9%, down 5.9pp sequentially, iNews 24 cited Stone Partners statistics as indicating.

Channel retailers are launching significant price competition to stimulate TV sales during the Black Friday shopping season in the US, optimizing the availability of affordable TV panel prices, according to market sources.

China-based display panel maker BOE Technology recently made an investment in Chinese smartphone vendor Honor, a partnership that industry observers say will allow the former to increase handset-use OLED panel shipments and the latter to secure panel supply.

Display panel makers, with demand and product prices dropping, have temporarily stopped placing manufacturing equipment since mid-2022, according to panel inspection equipment maker Favite.

AU Optronics (AUO) shipped LCD panels totaling 1.281 million square meters in October, increasing 3.1% sequentially, while Innolux shipped 8.77 million large-size panels and 21.9 million small- to medium-size ones in the month, respectively decreasing 4.9% and 6.7% sequentially, according to the companies.

China-based display panel maker BOE Technology has become the largest shareholder of China-based LED epitaxial wafer and chip maker HC SemiTek via the latter"s private placement, according to industry sources.

Considering that the US has launched a tech war against China by prohibiting the exports of advanced semiconductors involving US-developed technologies and related manufacturing equipment to China, if the conflict spills over to display panels, the US is also able to take measures to stall OLED panel production in China.

Samsung Electronics plans to increase its purchases of LCD panels in 2023 from non-China suppliers, such as Taiwan-based AU Optronics and Innolux, according to industry sources.

Panel maker Innolux has begun providing e-paper module products to clients for multiple applications, according to company president James Yang, as the company transforms itself into a system integrator.

After falling for 15 consecutive months, TV panel prices have recently begun picking up, with the rally likely continuing into November, according to industry sources.

Producers of raw materials for the solar sector are the key beneficiaries of rising demand this year, outpacing profit growth posted by the largest panel manufacturers.

Panel maker Innolux saw its net loss widen to NT$12.7 billion (US$395.5 million) in the third quarter of 2022, compared to a net loss of NT$4.7 billion in the previous quarter.

Corning has reported its sales went down 4% in the third quarter of 2022, but believes that panel makers" utilization rates have declined to a "correction low point," with display glass prices remaining consistent.

Panel maker AU Optronics (AUO) has reported a net loss of NT$10.43 billion (US$323.33 million) attributable to company owners for the third quarter of 2022. EPS for the quarter was minus NT$1.23.

LCD TV panel prices have stopped falling after sliding below suppliers" cash-cost levels, according to industry sources. Additionally, aggressive production cuts by panel makers also have helped bring a stop to falling prices.

LG’s monopoly on the large OLED panel market might be nearing its end as new producers are stepping in with technologies that could finally fix all of the OLED inherent downsides and eventually bring down the costs closer to LCD prices. Among the new producers we see Samsung with its QD-OLED tech combining quantum dot films with conventional OLEDs, and there is also AU Optronics from Taiwan promoting the inkjet printed large AMOLED panels. While Samsung is apparently experiencing some production problems with the QD-OLEDs, AUO seems to be progressing nicely on the inkjet printed AMOLEDs, as well as bringing some more improvements to the smaller rollable AMOLED screens designed for smartphones.

The latest advancements from AUO are presented in a recent video where the company’s Senior Associate VIce President Jennifer Lin highlights the importance of “eco-friendly” OLED panel manufacturing, claiming that the inkjet printing process adapted to AMOLEDs can use far fewer materials compared to LCD panel production and even conventional OLED panel production techniques. This aspect also leads to reduced production costs that can translate to up to 25% lower retail prices compared to same size LG OLED displays.

For now, AUO can only produce inkjet printed AMOLED screens of up to 32 inches in diagonal, but the technology is advancing fast and larger sizes are expected to be launched in a few years. The particular model presented in the video has a 4K resolution with 144 Hz refresh rate and is said to have increased brightness plus wider color gamut, which makes it ideal for medical and gaming applications.

AUO is also presenting the 5.6-inch rollable dual-sided AMOLED displays designed for smartphones. One of the uses for the dual-side technology enables gamers to enjoy multiplayer games on the same device. AUO managed to reduce the thickness of the superimposed displays by 50% to minimize the mechanical stress when rolling, while maintaining the same brightness. Additionally, it improved the durability of the dual-sided screens to withstand more than 100,000 rolls at 9 mm curvature.

AUO Corp (友達) yesterday cut capital spending by 20 percent to NT$36 billion (US$1.2 billion) this year from NT$45 billion, and suspended the construction of a new 8.5-generation production line in central Taiwan to cope with a severe downcycle after the LCD panel maker last quarter posted its first loss in about two years.

The slump in the industry and the weakness of AUO’s financial results reflect macroeconomic headwinds, including China’s COVID-19 lockdowns, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, energy supply constraints and soaring inflation, the company said.

AUO Corp chairman Paul Peng, left, and general manager Frank Ko attend the Touch Taiwan trade show at the Taipei Nangang Exhibition Center on April 27.

Previous downturns were caused by panel oversupply, but this one is much different, as an unfavorable macroenvironment has crippled consumers’ purchasing power and depressed demand for TVs, PCs and smartphones, he said, adding that recovery to normal levels is expected over an extended period.

AUO expects shipments to shrink about 15 percent quarterly this quarter, while it aims to keep average selling prices stable by improving its product offerings, Peng said.

AUO incurred net losses of NT$5.63 billion last quarter, the first loss since the second quarter of 2020. It reported net profit of NT$5.16 billion in the previous quarter and NT$19.54 billion a year earlier.

Average selling prices are expected to drop by a high single-digit percentage this quarter, while shipments of small and medium-sized panels are expected to plunge about 18 percent from last quarter, the company said.

Thanks to TV manufacturers’ aggressive procurement activities, global TV panel shipment for 1H21 reached 135.2 million pcs, a 3.5% YoY increase, according to TrendForce’s latest investigations. Notably, high-end OLED TV panels and 8K LCD TV panels showed diametrically opposed movements. The former product category reached a 2.6% market share in 1H21 (with room for further growth going forward) due to LGD’s capacity expansion as well as the narrowing gap between OLED panel prices and LCD panel prices. On the other hand, the latter’s market share fell to a mere 0.2% in 1H21 as panel suppliers were generally reluctant to manufacture 8K LCD TV panels due to these panels’ poor yield rates.

TrendForce’s findings indicate that Chinese panel suppliers were able to achieve a 58.3% share in the TV panel market, which was nearly 5 percentage points higher than their 1H20 market share, thanks to their growing number of production lines. Conversely, Taiwanese suppliers saw their market share drop by 2.2 percentage points from 1H20 levels to 21.1% in 1H21. This decline took place because of their limited production capacities and because they reallocated some of their production capacities for TV panels to IT products instead. Korean suppliers likewise experienced a decline in market share to 14.3% after SDC shuttered its Korea-based LCD fabs L7-2 and L8-1-2 and sold its Suzhou-based Gen 8.5 fab to CSOT. Finally, Japanese suppliers’ market shares increased to 6.3% as a result of SDPC’s Gen 10.5 capacity expansion.

Regarding OLED TV panels, which are relatively high-end products, it should be pointed out that LGD is the sole supplier of these panels. Not only did LGD expand the production capacity of its Guangzhou-based OLED panel fab, but LGD’s clients in the TV sector were also increasingly willing to procure OLED panels in light of the narrowing gap between OLED panel prices and LCD panel prices. Hence, the penetration rate of OLED panels in the TV panel market grew to 2.6% in 1H21, with about 3.556 million pcs shipped throughout the period. Furthermore, now that the Guangzhou fab’s OLED panel capacity reached 90k sheets/month in 2Q21, TrendForce expects annual OLED TV panel shipment for 2021 to reach 8 million pcs, with a 3% penetration rate in the overall TV panel market.

On the other hand, 8K LCD TV panels reached a mere 0.2% penetration rate in the TV panel market in 1H21 because panel suppliers’ concerns about profit and yield maximization resulted in their relatively low willingness to manufacture these products. On the demand side, clients were also unwilling to procure these panels due to persistently high quotes from suppliers. With regards to panel suppliers, CSOT in particular benefitted from the unique structure of its client base, which allowed it to dominate more than half of the 8K LCD TV panel market, with AUO taking second place. The respective market shares of CSOT and AUO currently sit at 54.4% and 22.6%. TrendForce forecasts a 0.2% penetration rate for 8K LCD TV panels for 2021 as the growth of these products is constrained by their relatively high prices and the current paucity of 8K content.

BOE, China’s largest display company, was listed as a major panel supplier in Samsung Electronics’ business report. BOE has filled the vacancy created by Samsung Display’s phased reduction of large LCD panels for TVs.

The business report, which was registered with the Financial Supervisory Service’s electronic disclosure system, listed three major display panel suppliers for the company"s consumer electronics (CE) sector in 2021 -- BOE and CSOT of China and AUO of Taiwan. BOE was newly added as a major supplier. BOE surpassed LG Display in 2018 to become the world’s No. 1 LCD manufacturer.

Samsung Display decided in early 2021 to stop producing large LCD panels beginning from 2022. The decision was made to speed up its transition to next-generation QD-OLED panels as the profitability of the LCD business fell significantly due to a price war with Chinese companies.

It stopped the operation of L7 at Asan Campus in South Chungcheong Province, which had produced large LCD panels, in March 2021. An 8th-generation LCD production line at the Suzhou plant in China was sold in April 2021. However, it is still operating some of its large LCD production facilities at Asan Campus at the request of Samsung Electronics. Samsung Display is considering shutting down these facilities within June 2022.

Industry insiders say that Samsung Display"s withdrawal from the LCD business has weakened Samsung Electronics" bargaining power in negotiations with Chinese vendors.

To bolster its bargaining power, Samsung Electronics is increasing its transactions with Taiwan’s AUO and Innolux, but this cannot be a long-term measure.

Samsung Electronics’ price burden for TV panels has nearly doubled over the past year. The Samsung Electronics business report says that the company spent 10,582.3 billion won on purchasing display panels in 2021. This was an increase of 94.2 percent from the previous year (5,448.3 billion won). The main factor behind the increase is a rise in LCD panel prices. Samsung Electronics explained that prices of TV panels rose about 39 percent on year in 2021.

Industry insiders say one solution is to accelerate a shift to OLED-based TVs. Chinese panel makers are investing aggressively to develop large OLED panel technologies, but they have not yet reached the volume production stage.

Samsung Electronics is negotiating with Samsung Display and LG Display over the release of OLED TVs. LG Display is the only company that mass produces large OLED panels. It can produce 10 million TV panels annually. Samsung Display started mass production of large OLED panels at the end of 2021. The two Korean OLED panel makers adopt white (W) and blue (B) light sources, respectively.
