Apple will offer free repairs to owners of 2016 MacBook Pros with backlight issues — a problem that’s increasingly started to appear on the laptops as they age. The repair program, announced this afternoon, covers only the 13-inch MacBook Pro model that debuted in 2016, though both the Touch Bar and non-Touch Bar versions are eligible. Repairs will be covered for four years after a laptop was first purchased.

In recent months, some owners of 2016 MacBook Pros have started to encounter an issue with their laptops’ displays, where the lighting will appear uneven on the bottom, as though stage lights are illuminating some areas but not others. The issue, dubbed “flexgate,” seems to be due to a cable that connects the base of the laptop to the display getting stretched more than it can handle over months of opening and closing the lid. Certain MacBook Pro models have been banned from flights following Apple’s recall of certain models sold between September 2015 and February 2017. Some of these MacBook Pro models are fitted with batteries that “may overheat and pose a fire safety risk,” according to Apple.

The US Federal Aviation Administration has alerted airlines to the recall. This means that if you are flying to or inside America, you won’t be able to take a recalled MacBook Pro on as carry-on luggage, nor will you be able to check it in as cargo.

Various airlines managed by Total Cargo Expertise, including TUI Group Airlines, Thomas Cook Airlines, Air Italy, and Air Transat, have implemented a complete ban on these laptops, with employees told: “The 15in Apple MacBook Pro laptop, sold between mid-2015 and February 2017 is prohibited on board any of our mandate carriers.”

It’s not only the 15in MacBook Pro that is affected by a battery issue. Apple has also indicated that the battery inside the 13in MacBook Pro can also expand – although this is considered less of a risk than the 15in issue.

As of May 2019 Apple has been running a backlight service program for 13in MacBook Pro purchased between October 2016 and February 2018. This includes the MacBook Pro from 2017.

The problem was caused by a flex cable that is too short. MacBook Pro models manufactured after 2018 are unaffected because a longer flex cable was used.

The problem was related to the design of the keyboard of these MacBook laptops. The so called Butterfly design meant that dust could get trapped under the keys causing keys to stop working. The problem was that the whole keyboard needed to be replaced to rectify the problem.

Non Touch Bar models of the 13in MacBook Pro sold between June 2017 and June 2018 could be affected by an issue with the SSD that might cause you to lose valuable data.

Apple has stated that “a limited number of 128GB and 256GB solid-state drives (SSD) used in 13in MacBook Pro (non Touch Bar) units have an issue that may result in data loss and failure of the drive.”

The issue applies to 13in MacBook Pro units sold between June 2017 and June 2018. Apple has emailed those with affected models – assuming that they were registered with Apple.

Shortly after the 2016 MacBook Pro got into users’ hands, reports of loud crackling and popping noises through the speakers started to appear on community forums. It was initially thought that, the noises only occurred if the user boots into Microsoft Windows using Boot Camp. However, one Macworld reader has commented that:

“I have a 2017 MacBook Pro and I had speakers replaced 2 times due to them popping. And I had not installed Windows, it all happened in MacOS. So it is 100% a hardware issue and not Boot Camps fault.”

A “small percentage” of MacBook Pros sold between February 2011 and December 2013 experienced issues with distorted video and out-of-the-blue system restarts. The problems affected 15in and 17in MacBook Pros from 2011 and 15in Retina MacBook Pros produced from 2012 to early 2013.

I have a macbook pro 13” 2017. The keyboard is messed up and under an apple recall, but when that happened, the display also started to flicker and have colored bands. About a month later when the keyboard started messing up again, and I was getting flickering, I discussed the issues with a customer support SUPERVISOR (don’t bother with the underlings). After much back and forth, he admitted that I had a lemon. I demanded a new MacBook Pro, and they agreed.

It happened AGAIN (since my last writing) and I insisted that they replace my computer becuase it was a lemon. In NY, there is a lemon law that covers all purchases. First I tried the store where I brought the computer for servicing, and then I climbed the ladder of supervisors until I got one who had the capability to offer a replacement. It wasn’t easy, and they will do everything in their power to counter you. They may even offer to fix it again for no charge (or reduce the charge). A few MacBook users have reported a potentially serious issue with Apple’s M1 MacBooks. Stories of cracked LCD screens on Apple’s M1 MacBook Air and M1 MacBook Pro, which launched in November 2020, have appeared in several places online.

Discussion threads about this problem popped up back in July 2021 on Apple’s Support Community and Reddit, with multiple users reporting similar incidents. A cracked screen from debris is always a possibility with laptops, given their portable nature. However, it seems that the exact culprit is too small for affected users to have seen or noticed. This seems plausible since Apple has previously warned MacBook owners not to attach webcam covers to their laptops—since the cover creates an additional gap between the screen and the body, it may cause cracks.

Another speculation on the cause of the cracks is the frame of the MacBook. It is possible that the frame holding the screen is too weak to properly safeguard it from the torque force experienced when it’s closed or carried around.

However, we think this is unlikely, as the design of the current M1 MacBook Air and Pro is the same as the previous generation. We haven’t seen any widespread complaints of any screen-cracking issues in that generation, so the chance of it only happening on the new model is low.

Unless the damage is minor, a cracked screen will likely result in a dead screen, rendering your device unusable. As such, you’ll want to get it repaired quickly. Your best bet is to go to an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Repair Center for a MacBook screen replacement or device replacement.

Apple hasn’t released an official statement on the matter, nor has it introduced a repair or replacement program for affected Macs. Hopefully, Apple will soon acknowledge the issue and the cause behind it, along with a cheaper repair program for users affected by the random screen cracks. It’s already possible to see if your Mac has been recalled for some reason, which includes special cases like this.

Low-quality LEDs not only produce bluish light but also have brightness degradation problems. The brightness of some third-party screens may only maintain half of the original brightness level after a year of use.

3. Photo sharpness. The Apple original screen produces a much sharper image thanks to the high quality of the LCD panel, as you can see on the right-hand side of the above photo.

This design flaw primarily afflicts the MacBook Pro 2016 and 2017 models. Both 13 inch and 15 inch models are affected.A1707 - MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2016-17, Touchbar model)

Up until 2015, the MacBook display controller or logic board used to be tucked inside the hinge cover at the bottom of the display. It was part of the “lid”, so the wire connecting to it ran inside the hinge cover and was never moved or disturbed.

The flex/ribbon contains multiple cables. Usually the backlight cable gives way first, causing various backlight related faults. The damage progresses in stages:When the cable hasn’t broken but just some connection lines are worn off, it manifests as the stage light effect.

Step 2: Quietly introduce a “fix” in the subsequent model. Apple discreetly increased the length of the flex cable in 2018 model MacBooks. Just by ~2mm. This would reduce the stress on the cable, thereby reducing chances of damage. Thus Apple tried fixing an issue they hadn’t acknowledged in the first place. Note: Jury is still out on whether this fix solves the problem or just delays the eventual failure. In our experience at Fixxo, 2018-19 models continue to face flex cable issues, however not in as large numbers.

But wait ..  this program is valid onlyfor “13-inch MacBook Pro 2016 model”, however it is amply clear the design flaw actually impacts both 13-inch and 15-inch variants of 2016 as well as 2017 models. Well..

If yours is a 13-inch MacBook Pro 2016 model, and the purchase date is between October 2016 and February 2018, you’re eligible for Apple"s free display replacement program. Congratulations! Take it to an Apple Authorized Service Provider. There are a number of fake AASPs around, careful!.

If your MacBook isn’t eligible for the program, you’ll unfortunately need to get a paid display replacement. It isn’t cheap. A reputed non-Apple vendor may be your best bet.

Well, the cable is integrated into the screen, so it cannot be swapped out. So, the standard resolution offered is to replace the entire display panel.

I realize there"s stuff out there like hackintosh, but I feel the trouble to use that and maintain it for upgrades costs probably more time eventually than a macbook costs more..

ooouch! i broke my LCD, too - dropped my laptop while i was hanging out a window sniffing for wifi signal. only dropped a couple feet, but it were enough. my DIY fix was only ~$200 (and a drink for dealing with the !#$!%ing antenna cables threaded under the keyboard and behind the LCD) ... i"m sticking with PCs!

Just remember to leave the lid open if you use it at work. IIRC, standard Macbooks aren"t designed to be able to dissipate the heat with the lid closed.

The other one is demoted to a desktop machine, I am actually keeping the lid closed.. If a macbook has a special mode to run with the lid closed, I feel like it was the intended design and they should at least cover that under the expensive remaining warranty :)

I opened my macbook and found a crack in the screen- no one in my family can recall anything happening to it....I wonder how I can find one of these "boutique computer shops" that can fix the screen?

My advise to you is, get on eBay, buy the screen and go to a tech to have it installed. It will probably set you back $200-$300. Hey it"s better than paying 900 bucks!!

That"s what I did. I got my screen for $50(I was lucky. Others go for $100), and then took it to a tech who charged me $120. My iBook is now as good as new!

This happened to my son"s macbook, heat stroke only 3 weeks old. Got the same run around from dealer. Found a replacement screen on eBay for AUD 300 and fitted myself. After 18 years of buying laptops with no issues except obsolence we wont be buying apple again

This computer has been used very little and last week, she was in the hospital and handed the laptop to me when someone came in the room. I closed the laptop and put in on the table beside the bed. A few minutes later when my daughter retrieved the laptop and opened the laptop, the screen was cracked. There are a lot of "its gotta be your fault" comments in the string, but I have found numerous incidents of this occurring. Some folks seem to think it is related to the lid warping causing the screen to twist when closing.Does anyone have any experience with this where Apple fessed up and actually repaired rather than calling their customers liars? It seems like Apple should repair the screens so they can hide the evidence that might be used in a class action suit.

i just had this happen and of course apple is insisting it is my fault and want to charge me 1300$ to fix the screen. it is really frustrating considering i switched to macs for reliability last year and the hard drive has already been replaced, the computer crashes when it goes to sleep and the lcd screen cracked upon transport in a laptop bag. anyone reading this, stick with pcs.

You guys know that if you have Home Owners Insurance they will replace computers for "accidental breakage" as long as you let them know you either use it for Work or School. Some companies might be a little more hesitant but, i bet somewhere in your contract it covers Work/School related electronics. I personally have the best Insurance available (USAA) of course, and to this day, they have replaced an iPhone, and in the process of currently replacing my Mac Book which accidently fell off my kitchen table and smashed onto the tile flooring thus cracking the screen the way you did yours. in your situation since you were gone from your home, you might have had to waited till you returned home and unethically made up a story or something, but in legit cases, they are pretty helpful. hope that helps some of you who are actually going through this currently!!! ;p

So after I dropped my MacBook and the screen cracked, I found out that Apple"s warranty did not cover accidental damage, and the repair would cost almost $900 dollars. I freaked out for a few days, but then did some research and found Mission Repairs (http://www.missionrepair.com/).

This repair center specializes in damaged Apple products. You simply mail them your computer and they"ll send it back within a day or two of when they received it. My repair cost $200 (plus $60 dollar insured shipping from VA), compared to $900. My computer came back perfectly with a brand new screen! I highly recommend Mission Repairs: they were prompt, had great customer service and easy instructions, and saved me a lot of money!

just cracked the lcd on my 1 year plus macbook... it didnt fall or hit anything at all n the guys at the apple store were almost laughing at me when i told them that..doesnt help that im all the way in malaysia and there are no mssion repairs here.... wallets gonna take some serious beating :( Apple sure needs to look into their after sales service ASAP...

My less than a year old macbook just fell off the bed this morning onto carpet & when I opened it,the screen was shot. Different color lines going everywhere. I cried.
