The three-row Jeep® Grand Cherokee L has been a huge success for the American adventure brand since debuting halfway through the 2021 model year. Now entering its third model year of existence, the Grand Cherokee L (WL75) returns mostly unchanged but with a few new tricks under its sleeves.

The two other changes for 2023, are for those audiophiles out there. Jeep is now offering its 9-speaker Alpine premium audio system as a standalone option on Limited models. The Alpine system includes a subwoofer and 506-watt amplifier with active noise control. For those looking for the optimum audio performance, the 19-speaker McIntosh® MX950 Entertainment System is now a standalone option for Overland and Summit models. The MX950 system includes a 17-channel amplifier delivering up to 950-watts of power, 19 custom-designed speakers, and a 10-inch subwoofer.

The Grand Cherokee L Laredo features the award-winning Uconnect 5 infotainment system with a 10.1-inch digital gauge cluster and an 8.4-inch high-definition touchscreen. The system offers a customizable, one-touch home screen, five user profiles, and standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. To enhance connectivity, the Grand Cherokee L delivers a class-leading total of 12 USB Type-A and new Type-C ports for all three rows. Third-row single USB ports are available on Laredo models.

The 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee L Laredo has a U.S. Manufacturer Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $41,395 for the 4×2 version and $43,395 for the 4×4 model.

Heated seats in the first two rows with three-level configurable controls for personalized passenger comfort are standard on Limited, Overland and Summit models. The Limited model also features a 6-speaker sound system with active noise cancellation and single-color ambient interior lighting for the instrument panel and front and rear doors.

Built for both on- and off-road adventures, the Grand Cherokee L Overland model has a starting U.S. MSRP of $57,910 for the 4×2 Pentastar V6 model. Starting U.S. MSRP for a 4×4 Overland model with the Pentastar V6 is $59,910. When equipped with the optional 5.7-liter HEMI V8 engine that delivers 357 horsepower and 390 lb.-ft. of torque and a class-leading towing capacity of up to 7,200 lbs., and adds an additional $3,995 to the Overland 4×4’s price.

The Overland 4×4 model adds Jeep’s Quadra-Trac II system, which adjusts torque distribution and will continue to reactively make corrections if tire slip occurs. When wheel slippage is detected, as much as 100% of available torque is instantly routed to the axle with the most traction.

Standard exterior upgrades for Overland include 20-inch aluminum wheels with Black Noise pockets, a new, unique Overland appearance, chrome front tow hooks, Gloss Black roof rack with Bright Stainless insert, rain-sensing windshield wipers, trailer towing, approach-lit door handles, rearview mirror puddle lighting, power-folding multifunctional Gloss Black mirrors with Bright Chrome insert, auto-tilt down in reverse, auto-dimming glass on driver’s side and courtesy lighting, windshield wiper deicer and passive entry. A Gloss Black roof is available for the first time on Overland models.

Length-adjustable cushions for the front row are introduced on Overland models. A power-folding third-row bench seat is also standard. Overland also features a new electronic remote release in the rear cargo area to quickly and effortlessly fold the second-row flat.

For customers seeking the peak of capability and luxury in an SUV, with premium materials and class-exclusive features, the state-of-the-art Grand Cherokee L Summit starts at a U.S. MSRP of $62,070 for 4×2 and $64,070 for 4×4 models.

The Summit is packed with premium appointments, such as Nappa leather seats with quilted seat bolsters and perforated seat inserts on all three rows, Absolute Oak wood and leather-wrapped multifunctional steering wheel, and Berber floor mats. First-row seats with new power 16-way adjustable position with memory and lumbar are standard on Summit. Also offered on Grand Cherokee Summit is front-row seat massage that includes 5 customizable profiles with 3 levels of pressure intensity.

Passenger comfort is elevated in Summit models with 4-zone automatic temperature control, which has the capability to select different fan levels and modes for individual passengers in the first and second rows. The system also offers 4 different temperature settings. Additional interior touches unique to the Summit model include a new, second-row floor console with 2 illuminated cup holders and a two-tier armrest with additional storage for mobile devices.

The Summit Reserve Package sets the benchmark for luxury in the full-size SUV segment. Premium hand-wrapped, quilted Palermo leather, ventilated front and second-row seats, memory and massage front seats and choice of a new Tupelo interior color add distinguishable details to the model.

For those who hate chrome and prefer a more sinister-looking for their Grand Cherokee L, there are three dark packages available for the 2023 model year.

The 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee L Altitudeis based on the entry-level Laredo model and adds distinct Black Gloss appearance details, including 20-inch Gloss Black aluminum wheels, Gloss Black exterior accents, badging, roof rails, and a unique seven-slot grille. Other functional features include remote start, heated front seats, heated steering wheel, wireless charging pad, adjustable height liftgate, rain-sensing wipers, a 115-volt power outlet, and third-row USB ports.

For those looking for more luxury, the 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee L Limited Black is the sweet spot in the Grand Cherokee L lineup. Adding the same Gloss Black accents from the Altitude to the Limited models, the Limited Black gives customers premium features like LED fog lamps, Capri leather seats, 8-way power driver seat with memory, 4-way driver/front-passenger lumbar adjuster with memory, and Selec-Terrain traction management system, which offers five available terrain modes (Auto, Sport, Rock, Snow, Mud/Sand) on 4×4 models.

While the Trailhawk model is exclusively for the two-row Grand Cherokee 4xe plug-in (PHEV) in 2023, the Grand Cherokee L does offer a Trail-Rated option once again for 2023. The Overland Off-Road Package includes skid plates for the fuel tank, transfer case, underbody, and front suspension, electronic limited-slip differential (eLSD) rear axle, 18-in. polished aluminum wheels, all-season tires, and Trail Rated badge.

The 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee L is available in 9 different exterior colors. Those colors include Baltic Grey, Bright White, Diamond Black, Ember, Hydro Blue, Midnight Sky, Rocky Mountain, Silver Zynith, and Velvet Red.

The first all-electric Jeep is scheduled to launch in 2023, but in the meantime, we’re getting plug-in hybrids. With gasoline engines to curb range anxiety and traditional mechanical four-wheel drive systems to preserve off-road capability, Jeep’s 4xe (pronounced “four-by-e”) plug-in hybrids bridge the gap between two eras.

The Grand Cherokee 4xe splits the difference between mainstream entries like the Hyundai Santa Fe and Kia Sorento plug-in hybrids and more luxury offerings like the BMW X5 xDrive45e, Lincoln Aviator Grand Touring, and Volvo XC90 Recharge — but with unmatched off-road capability.

Pricing starts at $59,565 for the base model. That’s a big increase from the base non-hybrid Grand Cherokee, but you do get more standard equipment, including a three-screen infotainment system. If you move up through the Trailhawk, Overland, and Summit trim levels to the top Summit Reserve, you’ll pay $76,095 before any options. The Grand Cherokee 4xe does at least qualify for the full $7,500 federal EV tax credit because of its large 17-kilowatt-hour battery pack.

The entire Grand Cherokee lineup is getting a redesign that started rolling out for the 2021 model year on the three-row Grand Cherokee L model and continues for 2022 with two-row models. Code-named WL, the new Grand Cherokee is a big change from the previous-generation WK2 model.

The seven-slot grille and politically incorrect name carry over, but everything else is different. In contrast to the somewhat pudgy WK2, the Grand Cherokee WL has a more graceful, elongated profile with upright sides and nice proportions. The styling was inspired by the classic SJ Jeep Grand Wagoneer, Jeep exterior design manager Eugenio Sellano-Neto said in a presentation ahead of our test drive. We think this Grand Cherokee is a better homage to the SJ than the actual current-generation Grand Wagoneer, in fact.

You can’t get a three-row Grand Cherokee 4xe, something that is available on the lower-priced Kia Sorento plug-in hybrid, as well as the pricier Lincoln Aviator Grand Touring and Volvo XC90 Recharge. The 4xe does have comparable interior space to these similarly sized SUVs, as well as non-hybrid Grand Cherokee models, though. Its 32.7 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats in place, and 70.8 cubic feet with the rear seats folded, is on the low end for an SUV of this size, but identical to a comparable non-hybrid Grand Cherokee.

We found the interior to be fairly upscale, with nicely integrated screens and appealing details like the large gear selector knob and switches for the drive modes and four-wheel drive system. Fit and finish also seemed worthy of a luxury vehicle, let alone a rugged Jeep. We weren’t as impressed with the copious piano black plastic (which attracted lots of dust), the Trailhawk’s vinyl seats, or the molded wood trim on Overland models, but the latter does at least get Nappa leather upholstery. And we had no issues with material quality on the high-end Summit and Summit Reserve models.

The Uconnect 5 infotainment system kept the various screens working well. Jeep crams in a lot of information, from typical features like navigation to pitch and roll angles for off-roading, but it was easy to toggle between everything. The main touchscreen was set up to show a few different widgets at once without looking cluttered, and Jeep’s UX designers made some smart decisions. Climate controls stay in a menu bar at the top of the screen, so you can make adjustments without having to exit Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Jeep also lets drivers quickly pull up a front camera view with one tap — that’s not always the case in other vehicles.

The front-passenger screen only works when someone is sitting in the seat and, because we drove solo, we weren’t able to test it out. But we think Jeep’s approach of decentralizing the interface with multiple screens makes more sense than using one oversize screen for everything. Aside from the latest Mercedes-Benz EVs, you won’t find a similar setup anywhere else, either.

Similar to the Wrangler 4xe, the Grand Cherokee 4xe uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, eight-speed automatic transmission, and two electric motors.

This complex system produces 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque, enabling a robust 6,000-pound maximum towing capacity, according to Jeep. That’s less than some non-hybrid Grand Cherokee models, but about the same as the BMW X5 and Lincoln Aviator plug-in hybrids. The automaker also quotes zero to 60 mph in about 6.0 seconds, which it claims is about a second quicker than a non-hybrid Grand Cherokee with the largest-available V8 engine.

Unlike non-hybrid Grand Cherokee models, the 4xe also gets standard four-wheel drive. And unlike other plug-in hybrid SUVs, it gets the hardware needed for serious off-roading. The four-wheel drive system is similar to non-hybrid Grand Cherokee models, with a two-speed transfer case and low range that allow the 4xe to crawl over low-traction surfaces. An optional air suspension system enables 10.9 inches of ground clearance (on Trailhawk models), and if that’s not enough, you still have steel skid plates protecting the vehicle’s underside — including the battery pack.

This adds up to an SUV that can off-road like a conventional Jeep, while using less fuel. Jeep was eager to show off the Grand Cherokee’s capabilities, sending us through an off-road course where, at one point, we were guiding a Trailhawk model up a rock face with two wheels off the ground. The fact that we were doing this in a plug-in hybrid caused no issues. It was even possible to cruise along in electric mode (although the amount of throttle required to get up steep inclines caused the gas engine to kick on). When it comes to off-roading, the Grand Cherokee 4xe is the real deal.

It’s unclear how many owners will take their circa-$60,000 SUVs off-road, but everyone will appreciate the Grand Cherokee’s on-road manners. We did our on-road driving in a midlevel Overland model, and were impressed by its comfortable ride, quiet cabin, and predictable handling characteristics.  While there were some minor blemishes, such as an occasional clunk when the drivertrain switched from electric to hybrid mode and an unattractive engine note, the overall experience was downright luxurious.

The Grand Cherokee 4xe is rated at 25 miles of electric range with a 56 MPGe combined efficiency rating. A standard 7-kilowatt onboard charger allows for a full recharge in 3.4 hours using a 240-volt Level 2 AC source, Jeep said.

Electric range is slightly less than you get in the Hyundai Santa Fe and Kia Sorento plug-in hybrids, as well as the BMW X5 xDrive45e and Volvo XC90 Recharge. We also fell short of that rating, even in low-speed driving, but the Jeep’s aggressive regenerative braking allowed us to get a few miles of electric range back fairly easily. We also found that, in normal driving, the Jeep was able to stay in electric mode consistently without turning on its gasoline engine.

In hybrid mode, the 4xe is rated at 23 mpg combined, meaning it’s only slightly more efficient than a Grand Cherokee with the standard V6 engine, which is rated at 22 mpg combined. As with all plug-in hybrids, you only get an efficiency benefit if you actually charge the 4xe regularly.

Crash-test ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) were not available at the time of publication. The previous-generation WK Grand Cherokee did not get perfect scores from either organization, so there is definitely some room for improvement.

Jeep offers a three-year, 36,000-mile limited warranty and five-year, 60,000-mile powertrain warranty, plus three years of free scheduled maintenance.

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe is both a good SUV and a good plug-in hybrid. Its off-road and towing abilities, as well as generous interior and cargo space, fulfill the SUV design brief. It also offers a usable amount of electric range, an electric mode that works well in normal driving, and aggressive regenerative braking.

The standard Uconnect 5 infotainment system and its three large displays, along with wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and available Amazon Fire TV connectivity, also make the Jeep fairly compelling from a tech standpoint. Most trim levels also felt fairly luxurious for a vehicle from a non-premium brand.

All of that adds up to a singular vehicle that’s hard to categorize. If all you want is a plug-in hybrid with lots of room, the Hyundai Santa Fe and Kia Sorento will take care of that for a lower price. However, the Grand Cherokee offers a more upscale feel and more tech than the Korean models at a lower starting price than luxury brand plug-in hybrids from BMW, Lincoln, and Volvo. By combining rugged capability, tech, and efficiency, Jeep has found itself a good niche.

The 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L delivers improved unrivaled capability along with composed on-road driving dynamics. Legendary off-road capability begins courtesy of three 4x4 systems – Quadra-Trac I, Quadra-Trac II and Quadra-Drive II with rear electronic limited slip-differential (eLSD). All three systems are equipped with an active transfer case to improve traction by moving torque to work with the wheel with the most grip.

The 2021 Grand Cherokee L’s class-leading Selec-Terrain traction management system lets customers choose the on- and off-road setting for optimum 4x4 performance. This feature electronically coordinates up to six different powertrains, 4x4 torque split, braking and handling, steering and suspension systems, including throttle control, transmission shift, transfer case and traction control, stability control, anti-lock braking system (ABS) and steering feel.

The all-new 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L offers buyers a choice of two powerful, fuel-efficient and refined engines with proven performance for any driving situation.

Fuel-saving engine start-stop (ESS) technology is standard on the Pentastar V-6. The ESS system has been upgraded and refined for the Grand Cherokee L. Changes include a pressure reserve element in the eight-speed transmission, which provides dedicated transmission fluid to the shift elements at engine restart for a quick launch. Refined powertrain controls and new starter technology minimize early engine restarts from minor movements of the driver’s foot on the brake pedal. Restart noise, vibration and harshness have been reduced via revised controls and switchable engine mounts.

The Grand Cherokee L’s V-8 engine uses cylinder shut-off technology that deactivates four cylinders during light acceleration or cruising situations on the highway. The system is active in an expanded region with respect to the previous generations and is unnoticeable to the driver. It provides V-8 power for acceleration and heavy loads and four-cylinder operation when the torque requirement is less than the maximum available from four cylinders. Depending on the driving scenario, cylinder shutoff can increase fuel economy from 5 to 20 percent.

From the moment Jeep introduced the Grand Cherokee in 1992, it presented the world something it had never seen before. The most celebrated SUV ever set a new industry benchmark and quickly became synonymous with upscale design and uncompromised capability. Fast forward decades later, the all-new 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L continues to build on its proud legacy, while raising the bar in luxury and performance.

The proportion of the all-new Grand Cherokee L was inspired by the original Wagoneer, Jeep’s first full-size luxury SUV. Grand Cherokee L’s lean profile features a longer hood and cab, which shifts the vehicle rearward to give a sense of motion with a ready to react response. A forward-tipped grille further enhances the length of the hood and gives a respectful nod to Wagoneer’s iconic design. A lowered, tapered roof improves aerodynamic performance and efficiency without sacrificing its cargo spaciousness and utility.

Most notably transformed is the face of the Grand Cherokee L. All-new slim LED headlights are the primary focal point and accentuate the technical character of the vehicle. The signature seven-slot grille has been updated to be wider with larger individual openings and is outlined in elegant trim that underscores its advanced lighting and emphasizes the width of the vehicle. Below the grille, the new front fascia is proportionally larger than previous generations, designed for function while keeping the competitive approach angle for which the Grand Cherokee is known. Its geometric shape conveys purpose while adding a slight formality to the overall front theme. The larger opening with textural elements conceals an all-new, long-range radar component and other advanced technology features, including active grille shutters, to help improve on-road performance and fuel efficiency.

From the side, a lowered beltline and expansive glass allow for a more spacious cabin and increased visibility. The roofline appears to float courtesy of a new window molding design that begins at the base of the side mirror and travels continuously to the rear quarter window and to the base of the back light. This trim treatment stands out even more when selecting the Gloss Black roof, which is available for the first time on Overland models and comes standard on Summit models. A new roof rack design consists of a singular side rail cap to create a seamless appearance. Body cladding and bright work have been kept to a minimum to align with the vehicle’s modern tailored aesthetic.

A widened track (36mm increase) gives the Grand Cherokee L’s stance a quiet confidence. The wheel flares are pulled tautly around the tires to strengthen the Grand Cherokee L’s stature. The tires are flush with the body side to showcase signature trapezoidal wheel arches and, for the first time on a Grand Cherokee, 21-inch wheels come standard with the Summit Reserve Package.

For the first time, a premium, full suite of LED lighting is standard on all Jeep Grand Cherokee trim levels, which allowed for design flexibility and helped to shape the identity of the vehicle.

Ultra slim headlamps with unique signature lighting set into Gloss Black bezels, along with slim horizontal fog lamps, express the serious nature of the front end and allow the Grand Cherokee L to be instantly recognizable both during the day and at night.

When it came to the interior design of 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L, the team’s objective was to create one of the most exquisite and technically advanced interiors in the industry. The next-generation interior evolves to create a more refined expression, featuring handcrafted materials with an attention to detail and modern amenities that pair seamlessly with its new lean and tailored exterior.

The rich mix of materials are contrasted by the sophisticated execution of the center stack, which has been realigned and is now even more accessible to the driver. A bright, structural element neatly frames the next-generation, 10.1-inch display for the new Uconnect 5 system. Also new is a 10.25-inch frameless digital gauge cluster with nearly two dozen different menus from which the user can select, including driver-assist technologies such as adaptive cruise control, highway assist, night vision, drowsy driver detection and speed limit traffic signs display (if equipped). To control the digital cluster, the Grand Cherokee L features an all-new multifunction steering wheel with paddle shifters. Summit models come standard with a leather-wrapped Absolute Oak steering wheel, and the Summit Reserve Package adds Waxed Walnut wood accents.

The console has been reimagined and now boasts an all-new layout featuring a glossy Piano Black finish. The center console is highlighted by an all-new drive control center with a backlit, metal rotary shifter that delivers haptic feedback when engaged. To emphasize its authentic Jeep character, the shifter is flanked by the ride height and Selec-Terrain switches. New streamlined cup holders allow for more space and storage in the front bin, which can hold two wireless devices and features an optional wireless charger that can charge two devices simultaneously.

When located, an alert with their positions relative to the vehicle are outlined in the instrument cluster directly in front of the driver.

Drowsy Driver Detection tracks vehicle movement, such as lane deviation, and interaction, such as steering-wheel input over time, for driving behavior consistent with that of a drowsy driver. When certain thresholds are reached, the system responds with audio and/or visual cautions for the driver to pull over. The feature comes standard on Summit models.

The Digital Rearview Camera system, optional on Limited models and above, replaces the conventional rearview mirror with a 9.2-inch-wide Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) that shows real-time video from a rear-facing camera. Unlike a conventional rearview mirror, the new digital camera system offers a view that is unobstructed by the D-pillars or rear seats. When not in use as a display, the screen reverts back to a reflective mirror.

An additional safety and security feature on Grand Cherokee L is Surround View Camera. Available on Limited and Overland, standard on Summit models, the system offers 360-degree, bird’s-eye views of the vehicle and its surroundings, enhanced by dynamic gridlines displayed on a 10.1-inch digital touchscreen. Meanwhile, new communication systems allowed potential conflicts to be resolved faster, thus reducing costly engineering changes, because all drawings and documents were in a central database.Chrysler purchased AMC in 1987, it expanded the system throughout its enterprise, thus connecting everyone involved in designing and building products.

The Grand Cherokee thus became the first Chrysler-badged Jeep product. Development work for the new Jeep model continued and Chrysler"s employees (after the 1987 buyout of AMC) were eager for a late-1980s release date; however, CEO Lee Iacocca was pushing for redesigned Chrysler minivans, thus delaying the Grand Cherokee"s release until late 1992Explorer competitor. Unlike the Explorer, the Grand Cherokee utilized monocoque (unibody) construction, whereas the Explorer was a derivative of the Ranger pickup with a separate body-on-frame. A Dodge branded version was designed as a precaution should Jeep dealers struggle handling so many Grand Cherokee units.

The Grand Cherokee debuted in grand fashion at the 1992 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan. The original Grand Cherokee was launched in 1992 as a 1993 model year vehicle in the luxury SUV segment. The "ZJ" models, manufactured from 1992 to 1998, originally came in three trim levels: base (also known as SE), Laredo, and Limited, subsequent trims were added, included Orvis (MY 95–98), TSI (MY97–98). The base model included features such as full instrumentation, cloth interior, and a standard five-speed manual transmission, while gaining the moniker "SE" name for the 1994 model year. Power windows and locks were not standard equipment on the base trim. The minimal price tag differential resulted in low consumer demand, and as a result, the low-line model was eventually discontinued. Additional standard features included a driver-side airbag and four-wheel anti-lock braking system (ABS). The Laredo was the mid-scale model with standard features that included power windows, power door locks, cruise control, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. Exterior features included medium-grey plastic paneling on the lower body and five-spoke alloy wheels. The Limited was the premium model, featuring body-color lower body paneling, and gold exterior accents. The Limited also boasted standard features such as leather seating, heated mirrors, front power seats, a keyless entry system, woodgrain interior appliqué, lace style alloy wheels, a driver information center with a compass, digitized climate control, an electrochromic rearview mirror, and Jensen brand stereo with multi-band equalizer. By 1996 the options list grew to include heated seats. Standard was the 4.0, with the 5.2 V8 (and 5.9 in 1998) being optional, as with other models. Package groups with the various trim levels included: fog lamps, skid plates, as well as convenience, lighting, luxury, power, security, and trailer towing packages.

When it was first introduced in April 1992 as an early 1993 model year vehicle, the Grand Cherokee only had one powertrain choice: the 4.0-liter AMC-derived straight-six engine that made 190 horsepower (193 PS; 142 kW). This became the "volume" engine for the Grand Cherokee. Transmission choices included a four-speed automatic transmission (early production ZJs used the AW4—the A500SE (later 42RE) replaced the AW4 during the latter half of the 1993 model year) or an Aisin AX15 manual transmission. Low demand for the manual transmission resulted in its discontinuation after 1994, but European-market ZJs retained it when coupled to the diesel engine (which was unavailable in North America). The drive train choices included rear-wheel drive or four-wheel-drive. In 1995, the engine dropped 5 horsepower (5 PS; 4 kW) to 185 horsepower (188 PS; 138 kW) due to new EPA regulations imposed on the 1996 model year.

In 1997, for the 1998 model year, a variant of the top-level Grand Cherokee Limited, the "5.9 Limited" was introduced. Jeep ads claimed it to be the "world"s fastest sport utility vehicle", verified by third-party testing. The primary improvements in the 5.9 Limited version included a 245-horsepower (248 PS; 183 kW) 5.9-liter OHV V8 engine, heavy-duty 46RE automatic transmission, functional heat-extracting hood louvers, unique wide-slot body-colored grille with mesh inserts, special rocker moldings, low-restriction exhaust with three-inch chrome tip, a low-profile roof rack, and special 16" Ultra-Star wheels. The 5.9 Limited also received a 150 amp alternator and a 2-speed electric cooling fan. Other features include a standard 180-watt, 10-speaker Infinity Gold sound system with rear roof-mounted soundbar, standard sunroof, and an interior swaddled with unique "calf"s nap" soft leather and faux wood trim. The 5.9 Limited was awarded "4×4 of the Year" for 1998 by

Launched in September 1998, the redesigned WJ 1999 Grand Cherokee shared just 127 parts with its predecessor (mostly fasteners). The European model was coded WG. The spare tire was relocated from the side of the cargo compartment to under the floor. (Like the 1998MY ZJ, the rear tailgate glass opened separately.) The two heavy pushrod V8 engines were replaced by Chrysler"s then-new PowerTech. The new V8 engine produced less torque than the old pushrods, but was lighter, offered better fuel economy, and provided similar on-road performance figures (the 23-US-gallon (87 l; 19 imp gal) fuel tank was replaced with one of a 20.5-US-gallon (78 l; 17.1 imp gal) capacity). The straight-six engine was also updated. A redesign of the intake manifold added 10 horsepower (10 PS; 7 kW). While other Jeep vehicles used the Mopar 5 × 4.5 bolt circle, this was the first Jeep following the 1987 Chrysler buyout to receive a wider bolt pattern—5 × 5.

A notable feature available in this generation was the automatic four-wheel drive option called New Venture Gear NV247 transfer case. This two-speed chain-driven transfer case uses a gerotor, a clutch pack coupled to a hydraulic pump, to transfer torque between the front and rear axles. The transfer case contains three modes, 4-All Time, Neutral, and 4-Lo. In 4-All Time, 100% of torque is sent to the rear axle in normal conditions. If the rear axle starts spinning at a higher rate than the front axle, hydraulic pressure builds up in the gerotor and causes the clutch pack to progressively transfer torque to the front axle until both axles return to the same speed. A neutral mode is intended for towing the vehicle. In 4-Lo, the front and rear axles are locked together through a 2.72 reduction gear ratio. The NV247 transfer case is mated to front and rear axles containing Jeep"s Vari-Lok differentials. Vari-Lok differentials also use a gerotor to transfer torque between the wheels on either side of the axle. The major advantage of Quadra-Drive was that the combined transfer case and progressive locking differentials in each axle could automatically control traction between all four wheels. However, only the center differential could be permanently locked, and only in 4Lo. The Quadra-Trac II system included the NV247 transfer case with the standard open front and rear differentials.

The automatic transmission in the WJ was notable. It included three planetary gear sets rather than the two normally used in a four-speed automatic. This gave it six theoretical speeds, and it would have been the first six-speed transmission ever produced in volume, but it was programmed to only use five of these ratios. Four were used for upshifts, with a different second gear for downshifts. Although five of the six ratios were used, Chrysler decided to call it a "4-speed automatic". For MY 2001, the programming was changed to make use of all six ratios. Rather than have six forward gears, the transmission was programmed to act as a five-speed with the alternate second gear for downshifts. The rpm at 70 miles per hour (110 km/h) on a 545RFE is 2,000 rpm, 200 rpm less than the 45RFE programming. 1999 and 2000 model-year WJ owners can have their 45RFE transmission"s programming flashed to enable the extra gear as both transmissions are physically the same. (Must purchase new PCM and ABS module and program them with a fake VIN to make this work.) The 42RE 4-speed automatic remained the transmission for the inline 6 engine. It had slight changes from the previous model Grand Cherokee.

The Grand Cherokee received a minor facelift for 2004 including round fog lamps, a lower front fascia, and a new body color-matched inset grille design.

The WK Grand Cherokee debuted in 2004 for the 2005 model year at the 2004 New York International Auto Show with available Quadra-Drive II four-wheel drive, rear-seat DVD player and optional 5.7-liter Hemi V8. The 3.7-liter V6 engine replaced the 4.0-Liter straight-6. A Mercedes-Benz-sourced 3.0-liter V6 Common Rail Diesel (CRD) was available outside of North America from launch.

Jeep replaced the XJ-era leading-arms live-axle front suspension (found in the ZJ and WJ) with an independent double-wishbone setup like that which debuted in the 2002 Liberty. Classed as a truck-based SUV, the WH/WK Grand Cherokee offers "crossover" refinement, capability and NVH.

The 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee made its European debut at the Euro Camp Jeep in Ardèche, France. This Jeep has gained 4 stars in the Euro NCAP crash safety tests conducted in 2005.

The Grand Cherokee received a minor facelift for 2008 with revised headlights and available High-Intensity Discharge (HID) Headlamps with auto-leveling. The lower portion of the front bumper was still removable as it was from launch to increase the approach angle for off-road use. The 4.7-liter was refined, now producing 305 hp (227 kW; 309 PS), and 334 lb⋅ft (453 N⋅m; 46 kg⋅m).

The 2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee is available with an improved 5.7-liter Hemi engine rated at 357 hp (362 PS; 266 kW) and 389 lb⋅ft (527 N⋅m; 53.8 kg⋅m) of torque. The engine uses variable valve timing to increase fuel economy.

The fourth-generation WK2 Grand Cherokee went on sale in summer 2010 as a 2011 model.2009 New York Auto Show.Chrysler Chapter 11 reorganization that same year.

Like previous generations, the WK2 Grand Cherokee chassis is a steel unibody. Unlike previous generations, it features four-wheel independent suspension for better on-road handling. The WK2 and 2011 Durango use a Chrysler designed and engineered platform/chassis that Mercedes-Benz later used for the Mercedes-Benz W166 series. The Chrysler designed platform was part of the DaimlerChrysler engineering projects that were to launch the WK2 Grand Cherokee with the Mercedes-Benz ML to follow.

The new Grand Cherokee SRT8, which started production on July 16, 2011,Hemi V8 engine. Jeep claims the new SRT8 gets 13 percent better fuel economy than its predecessor.

For the 2022 model year, Jeep marketed the outgoing Grand Cherokee WK2 alongside the all-new Grand Cherokee WL model as the Grand Cherokee WK (not to be confused with the Grand Cherokee (WK), which was produced from 2005 until 2010). The lineup is condensed to base Laredo "E", mid-level Laredo "X", and range-topping Limited trims, with the only engine option being the base 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 gasoline engine.

The fifth generation (WL) Grand Cherokee was revealed as the three-row LWB version, Grand Cherokee L on January 7, 2021. The two-row version was revealed on September 30, 2021.Mack Avenue Assembly Complex, which is built on the grounds of the Mack Avenue Engine Complex in Detroit, Michigan. The two-row Grand Cherokee will continue to be assembled at the nearby Jefferson North Assembly Plant, where it has been assembled since its introduction in 1992 for the 1993 model year.

Three different four-wheel-drive systems will be available: Quadra-Trac I, Quadra-Trac II featuring low range, and Quadra-Drive II with low range and "Quadra Lift" air suspension system, as well as rear-wheel drive. When properly equipped, the Grand Cherokee will be able to tow up to 7,200 pounds (3,300 kg). The Grand Cherokee will also be able to ford up to two feet (24 in) of water (when equipped with the Quadra Lift air suspension system). All engines will be mated to a ZF-sourced eight-speed automatic transmission that is controlled via a rotary shift knob. The Selec Terrain system, first introduced on the Jeep Grand Cherokee (WK2), will also be available on the Grand Cherokee WL, and is now controlled via a toggle switch in the center console. The Quadra Lift air suspension system is available only with the Quadra-Drive II system.

The 2021 Grand Cherokee is the third Fiat Chrysler Automobiles product to offer the new UConnect 5 infotainment suite, which will offer either an 8.4-inch or 10.1-inch high-resolution touchscreen display, SiriusXM Satellite Radio with 360L, SiriusXM Travel Link services, UConnect Guardian (powered by SiriusXM), a 4G LTE wireless Internet hotspot, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration, and an integrated virtual assistant that c
