Many laptop and notebook computers now feature a type of screen called a Thin Film Transistor (TFT) monitor. It is not unusual to find the terms "LCD monitor" and "TFT monitor" used interchangeably by computer experts, but the same basic advice applies to either type of screen. To clean one properly, you should use a lint-free cloth and very gentle pressure. If the screen is very dirty, plain water or water with a small amount of vinegar can be used to clean it, but the liquid should never be sprayed directly on the monitor.

Putting pressure on a TFT monitor can cause permanent damage to the electronically sensitive crystals pressed between two thin sheets of plastic, which makes cleaning it a trickier process than cleaning its glass-encased CRT cousin. It can also draw moisture into itself through capillary action, so spraying a liquid cleaner directly on the screen can also be problematic. Any moisture absorbed through the screen surface will not come out voluntarily, and could ruin the entire display.

To clean a TFT screen properly, it is important to remember you are dealing with plastic, not glass. Traditional glass cleaners usually contain alcohol or ammonia, which is harmless on glass but bad for plastic. Never use household glass cleaners, since the ammonia or alcohol will eventually cause the plastic to turn yellow and degrade.

Instead, many experts suggest using clean water and a lint-free microfiber cloth designed for cleaning optics. A small amount of a weak acid, such as vinegar, could be added to the water if the monitor is heavily contaminated with surface dirt or other substances. The cloth should only be slightly damp, and wiping should be in a vertical/horizontal direction. A dry cloth should be used to remove any trace of moisture. Use a very light touch, and only clean a TFT monitor when the power has been turned off.

Some manufacturers of computer peripherals market cleaners intended specifically for LCD, plasma, or TFT monitors. These cleaners usually contain no ammonia or alcohol, although it pays to read the labels before purchasing any commercial cleaning product. Some cleaning kits contain a spray bottle of solution and optical-grade wiping and drying cloths. One or two sprays of the cleaning solution should be sufficient for routine maintenance, although many experts recommend spraying the cloth, not the monitor. It is still important to use a very light touch when wiping the screen with a commercial cleaner.

Some computer users purchase a glare reduction screen or a Lexan® screen protector to prevent the monitor from getting too dirty. When a laptop or notebook computer is folded for storage, the screen may come into contact with the keyboard and pick up traces of skin oils, dirt, or other contaminants. It might be useful, therefore, to wipe down a portable computer"s keyboard before closing the lid. Keeping the monitor out of the reach of young children or inconsiderate co-workers may also help keep it clean as well. Curious people are often tempted to poke at a flat screen monitor, so you may want to take steps to discourage this behavior.

I"ve owned this product for a while now, but never bothered with a review until now. It"s original use was for a Samsung LCD 40" HD TV. But now I have bought myself and mounted the Hisense HM657000 UHD LED (Hisense apparently calls it ULED) TV, and I"ve given it a try on this new screen as well. Put simply, it works as advertised. No scratches or damage to the screen. First you use the extendable/retractable anti-static brush to carefully and gently dust off any surface dust or debris from your screen. Sometimes the strands/bristles from the anti-static brush shed off while in use, but it"s of no concern. Then you apply the spray to the microfibre cloth and begin wiping, but not too vigorously or with too much pressure, unless there happens to be a sticky mark of some sort on the screen, then more pressure will be needed. Then go over with a dry part of the cloth to finish off. I"ve done this with my Samsung and it hasn"t caused any damage to the screen. I"ve also just applied it to my new Hisense TV and again, the screen now looks immaculate and of course damage free.

The only other thing I"ll say is that in my ignorance and indolence I blithely applied the spray directly on to my Samsung TV screen and then wiped it off with the cloth on a fair few occasions. Having just read this product page again, it would appear you are only supposed to apply the spray directly to the cloth and then wipe the screen. Although I recommend adhering to the prescribed method, spraying directly to my Samsung TV has never caused any damage and always cleaned up right nice. However, I won"t take the chance with my UHD TV, and will now follow the correct procedure from now on!

When figuring out how to clean a TV screen, selecting the safest cleaning solution is key, but it’s also important to know what cleaning products to avoid. Keep in mind that not only should you skip cleaning with certain products, you should also avoid spraying them in close proximity to the TV.

In terms of what to use, Samsung recommends “monitor cleaner only” (also called TV screen cleaner). Panasonic suggests “one part mild liquid dish soap diluted by 100 times the amount of water.” To make this cleaning solution, add a scant teaspoon of liquid dish soap to two cups of water, stirring well to dissolve.

Some people swear that only distilled water is useful as cleaning spray for their delicate electronics. Although Williams does not necessarily recommend using distilled water, if you know for a fact you have hard water in your area, you may want to try the distilled water route and see if you notice a difference. Hard water, which has high levels of calcium and magnesium, may leave a film or residue when it’s used for cleaning. Before you spray water to clean TV screens, try experimenting with tap water on a less-important screen, like an old cell phone, to assess the results.

If you can picture the hulking tube TVs (also known as CRTVs) of yore, you may also remember how delightfully easy they were to clean—a few spritzes of window cleaner and some wipes with paper towels and you were good to go—no special microfiber cloth required. But modern TVs with fancier technologies like LCD, OLED, and plasma call for gentler techniques. “Avoid using chemicals like alcohol, ammonia or acetones when cleaning your TV. These cleaners were safe to use for previous generations of TVs with glass panels, but as the hardware changes with time, the cleaning methods do too,” says Williams.
