This portable little TV rocks!!! Recently purchased MyGoTV one month ago, and wanted to give it more testing and time, before posting this review. Because we live along the Florida-Alabama Gulf Coast (Hurricane Country), MyGoTV is a great choice - it is one of the few DTVs on the market that offers AA battery-operated power with a strong digital signal. For the user, it means having a continuous TV monitoring of news and weather-related events, during long-lasting power outages. And if you have a big supply of AA batteries, you can still watch a lot of your favorite TV shows!!

WORKS WITH AA ALKALINE BATTERIES AND IS A GREAT DTV FOR LONG-LASTING POWER OUTAGES - One of the biggest selling features for this portable TV is that it can run on four AA alkaline batteries. Most of the "other" portable DTVs currently on the market use a re-chargeable or built-in battery that has to be recharged after 2 hours of usage. This is not good when the power is out for days, or weeks! With MyGoTV, the user can keep on replacing the AA batteries as they are used up. Just remember to keep a big supply of AA batteries! It seems to work for about 2 hours before batteries need replacing. The unit also has a feature, which allows the user reduce or set the brightness of the picture - to use less battery power. The picture clarity still appears to be very bright or visible, in the lower brightness mode settings! The audio works great through the built-in speaker, and also has a jack for headphones.

BUILT-IN RETRACTABLE ANTENNA AND SIGNAL-STRENGTH INDICATOR - Using the built-in retractable antenna, MyGoTV picks up most DTV stations in my area. Although the built-in telescopic antenna is somewhat flimsy, the picture and clarity of the broadcast signal is brilliant! You may have to re-position or rotate the built-in antenna, or re-position the TV for best reception. Signal strength will depend on your location, nearby buildings or large obstacles, the material/construction your building or residence is made of, the terrain and landscape between your location and where the DTV towers are positioned. This seems to be the case with ALL digital TV signals. MyGoTV has a great built-in signal strength indicator - a convenient feature to use when trying to get the best possible reception. Using the retractable built-in antenna, we were able to receive all of the major network stations, except for one. Using an external antenna, connected to MyGoTV, we could pick up the weaker station 95% of the time. When it comes to Digital Television, an external antenna seems to be the most successful way to get the best possible reception.

EXTERNAL ANTENNA JACK - Although not really advertised or mentioned in the MyGoTV 3.5" user manual, another big selling feature (especially for MyGoTV users living in remote rural/countryside areas) is the external antenna jack. This is located on the side of the TV, just above where the user would plug in headphones. The user has to remove the little rubber plug, and also attach a RF connector, which will allow the attachment of an external antenna. MyGoTV tech support was very friendly and helpful - and will provide a site where the user can order any of the accessories (RF-Connectors, AC power chargers, etc.) for the MyGoTV. If an external antenna is used with a RF connector/adaptor plugged into the side of the TV, the amount of channels received can potentially increase dramatically!

NOTE: **Important when selecting an external antenna for DTV - be sure to ALWAYS use a good external indoor/outdoor antenna (outdoor is preferred), especially if you live in very rural areas. Antennaweb.org is a good site to visit, to see what stations should be received in your area, and the site also offers useful recommendations for what type of external antenna that will work best in your specific area. In my area, MyGoTV, attached with an external indoor/outdoor antenna picked up between 30-40 stations in the Mobile, AL - Pensacola, FL region! Although many of the channels are independent TV stations, this success was definitely more channel results than I expected! On some RARE occasions we have picked up DTV stations as far away as New Orleans, LA, (almost 200 miles away!), Hattiesburg, MS, and Dothan, AL (both cities over 100 miles away!) Although this is amazing reception, just remember that those locations already mentioned were pulled in using an EXTERNAL antenna connected to MyGoTV. The antenna with this success is also offered by Amazon. It is from Antennas Direct, the Clearstream Indoor/Outdoor model. This is a great antenna that can easily be placed indoors, or outdoors on a post, or hanging on the back porch, or anywhere you want to place it for best reception! Good DTV reception depends on several factors, which means, the better the quality of the external antenna, and the LOCATION of the antenna and TV, the more stations you are likely to receive. Without an external antenna connected to MyGoTV, and using the built-in retractable antenna, we still were able to pull in a lot of the local stations: ABC, NBC, CBS, and more.

OTHER GREAT FUNCTIONS - It is worth mentioning that the MyGoTV seems to have a great TV tuner! It also has a great picture! The user tested the MyGoTV with several other TV tuners (other portable DTV sets, computer TV tuners, analog to digital boxes, and the winner was - MyGoTV! It actually pulled in (the weakest) major broadcast station in the area (tower located farthest away), using a good external antenna. The other TV tuners that were tested did not pull in the weaker local station, using the same external antenna. The only exception (in my testing) was the Auvio 3.5" brand, and that is because it is very similar DTV model to this brand, with the same great features. MyGoTV has also pulled in many stations during rainy days! MyGoTV also has some great features, such as an auto SCAN UPDATE, which lets the user scan for new channels, but not wipe out (the saved channels) already previously scanned/saved. There is also a great "channel hopping" feature to quickly change channels. One of the best features is the EPG, an electronic program guide, which works like an electronic TV Guide, and shows the users what programs are scheduled for a selected channel, the times they are scheduled, and more details! Awesome feature!

SANTA FE SPRINGS, CALIF.: Innovative DTV, a stateside company that manages U.S. sales for a Korean electronics manufacturer, is hawking a new handheld digital TV. However, the 3.5-inch LCD model is billed as “portable” rather than “mobile,” i.e., it receives ATSC digital TV signals rather than the mobile format, ATSC M/H.

The $100 MYGoTV model features an LCD screen, ATSC/NTSC tuners, built-in speakers and headphone jack. It’s powered by easy-to-find AA batteries, for up to two hours of playback, Innovative says. The company sells through the Home Shopping Network.

“Every time MYGOTV has shown in HSN, it has been sold out. HSN will air MYGOTV 3.5-inch during Thanksgiving season,” Innovative said in a press release. The assertion implies that MyGoTV has up to four types of ATSC M/H receivers in the market. A 3.5-inch “Mobile DTV/FM Radio” for $149; a 33.5-inch “Mobile DTV” for $110; a 7-inch “Mobile DTV” for $170; and a “Mobile DTV Car Tuner” listed for $100 are all said to be “sold out.” No specs are given on any of the products labeled “Mobile DTV.”

The first consumer Mobile DTV receiver confirmed to decode ATSC M/H/ signals came on the market in mid-October. The DP570MH, a combination receiver/DVD player from LG, became available at Amazon for $223.21. A source familiar with the Mobile DTV initiative is looking into the MyGoTV models. -- Deborah D. A handheld television is a portable device for watching television that usually uses a TFT LCD or OLED and CRT color display. Many of these devices resemble handheld transistor radios.

In the 1970s and early 1980s, Panasonic and Sinclair Research released the first TVs which were small enough to fit in a large pocket; called the Panasonic IC TV MODEL TR-001MTV-1. Since LCD technology was not yet mature at the time, the TV used a minuscule CRT which set the record for being the smallest CRT on a commercially marketed product.

Later in 1982, Sony released their first model - the FD-200, which was introduced as “Flat TV” later renamed after the nickname Watchman, a play on the word Walkman.active-matrix LCD was released. Some smartphones integrate a television receiver, although Internet broadband video is far more common.

Since the switch-over to digital broadcasting, handheld TVs have reduced in size and improved in quality.DVB-H, although it didn"t see much success. The major current manufacturers of DVB-T standard (common throughout Europe) handheld TVs are August International, ODYS and Xoro.

These devices often have stereo 1⁄8 inch (3.5 mm) phono plugs for composite video-analog mono audio relay to serve them as composite monitors; also, some models have mono 3.5 mm jacks for the broadcast signal that is usually relayed via F connector or Belling-Lee connector on standard television models.

Screen sizes vary from 1.3 to 5 inches (33 to 127 mm). Some handheld televisions also double as portable DVD players and USB personal video recorders.

Laser’s MP32 portable digital TV player is neat and well executed, but the nature of aerial reception means a solid television picture is not something you can count on.

We at GadgetGuy.com.au love TV. On the daily commute, waiting in the carpark for mum to return from shopping, camping down at the river, on the sidelines of little Bruce’s soccer game, or under the covers long past bed time – we can’t get enough of it. Which is why we were excited about Laser’s MP32, a ‘pocket’ digital TV that receives all the standard definition Freeview channels – including the new ABC2, ABC3, Go, One and 7TWO services – records television and plays and records DVB-terrestrial radio channels.

While not exactly pocketable (120 x 78 x 20mm), the MP32 will fit easily into a handbag or backpack and weighs a mere 200 grams, which is less than most smartphones.

The screen is a bright, colour 3.5 inch LCD displaying 320 x 240 pixels, to the right of which is a small speaker that outputs audio at acceptable volumes. Below that is a simple seven-button thumb pad for controlling volume and channel selection, and for easily navigating the software menus.

A 3.5mm headphone socket doubles as an AV output for sending analog audio and composite video to a larger display. A kickstand pulls out from the rear of the unit, allowing the MP32 to be located for viewing on a flat surface.

The graphic interface of Laser’s Pocket Digital TV makes accessing its various functions easy. You can view the available digital channels via an electronic program guide that displays Now and Next information alongside a video PIP of the current broadcast on your selected channel. A more comprehensive program list by channel is accessed by doing deeper into the menu.

There’s also a Channel Info feature that shows signal strength and quality as a bar graph. When the bars are yellow or green you have reception; when they are red the picture breaks up or vanishes to a black screen.

Laser recommends the MP32 be used only where digital TV reception is strong, such as metropolitan areas, and our test locations were in the Sydney CBD – around two kilometres from a transmitter – and an eastern beach suburb eight kilometres from the CBD. We were unable to sustain a solid signal in either location; we’d find a room where strength and quality were green and locate the MP32 at that spot, but the signal rating never remained constant and we frequently experienced picture drop-out and pixelation.

On the roam, reception was intermittent too; the MP32 is not something that will amuse the kids in the back on long car trips. Ironically, we managed good reception in the back yard under a tree – but strong ambient light meant we couldn’t see the picture on the LCD.

Recording broadcast programs to SD was a doddle, and playback (dropouts and all) was as per the original. The MP32 does not allow time-shifting, meaning recording is possible only when the MP32 is in TV mode – so, like, when you’re actually watching TV – and only for the channel displayed on the screen.

We really wanted to like Laser pocket digital TV, but there are other multimedia devices that do music, video and photos better, and provide photo and video capture into the bargain, plus larger storage capacity. The TV recording feature is useful, I suppose, if you see yourself wanting to keep a copy of a program you’ve already watched (albeit intermittently).

As to its unique feature – that of portable digital TV reception – it’s just too flaky. While the blame for this may lay with the MP32 it’s more likely due to the patchy nature of unwired television reception in general (TV tuner cards for PCs don’t do any better). Where the fault lies, however, is fairly academic. As a device you can count on for watching digital television indoors or out, the MP32 doesn’t impress.

Cheap; easy to use; handy photo and music playback; doubles as a digital set-top box for analog TVs; good TV picture in reception areas; easy recording
