While the Korean giants were busy developing next-generation organic light emitting diode (OLED) TVs, little-known Chinese companies have started selling a type of display that are sharper than the standard LCD and cheaper than OLED.

Until last year, the UHD market had been almost non-existent, with just 33,000 sets sold in the 200 million-unit LCD TV market. Since then, shipments have soared around 20-fold, thanks to China, data from research firm IHS shows.

Chinese consumers who want brighter and sharper images but can’t afford OLED screens made by LG and Samsung Display, a unit of Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, are turning to UHD.

But its slow introduction into the market and austere prices have thrown open a window of opportunity for UHD makers, in this case Chinese companies like BOE Technology Group Co Ltd and TCL Corp’s LCD unit CSOT.

By comparison, Japanese flat-screen pioneer Sharp Corp reported a razor-thin 0.5 percent margin. LG Display, the world’s No.1 LCD maker, posted a 5.6 percent margin.

Samsung Display, a unit of Samsung Electronics, had a margin of 13 percent, the biggest in the industry. But excluding its fledging OLED business, its LCD margin is between 3 and 7 percent, according to a Bernstein forecast.

“They’ve got also strong captive customers - Chinese TV manufacturers and a booming China market. It will take quite a while for Samsung and LG, which made a strategic mistake by ignoring the potential of UHD, to overtake them,” Nam said.

“Even with some expansion of the Chinese panel suppliers we do expect Samsung and LG Display to stay dominant and continue production in LCD,” said Sweta Dash, director at IHS.

While Samsung and LG Display are investing billions of dollars in OLED this year, the two giants are also broadening their product lineups to include more popular 50 to 60-inch UHD models.

BOE Technology is now planning to raise 46 billion yuan ($7.5 billion) in the biggest Chinese equity offering this year, to build panel production lines and increase its stake in its LCD venture BOE Display Technology.

This year, Samsung, LG, and other Korean panel giants have announced the cessation of LCD panel production. In addition, to the local retention of part of the production capacity, these companies are basically out of the LCD market. They will now focus on the OLED market but even here, the competition is growing. In the OLED market, Chinese companies are catching up even faster, and the competition in this market is not easy.

According to recent reports, in 2019 the global OLED panel market, Samsung leads all other manufacturers. The South Korean manufacturer had an 85.4% market share. In second place was Chinese display manufacturer, BOE, with only 3.6% market share. LG ranks fourth with 2.8% market share after Pfizer in third position. However, LG’s strength is in the large size OELD panels market. It only recently started entering the small/medium panels market.

Although Samsung and LG are conveniently leading the OLED market presently, Chinese manufacturers are rising fast. The likes of BOE, Huaxing Optoelectronics, Pegasus Microelectronics, Vivienne, and other companies are vigorously building a 5.5 generation / 6 generation line of OLED production. There are speculations that the Chinese production of OLED panels in the next three years will increase significantly.

South Korean companies are worried that not only have Chinese companies have increased their production capacity significantly but after mastering LCD and OLED panel production technologies, they also have the same competing capital in the new generation of display technologies, such as mini LEDs, micro LEDs, and other emerging display panels. South Korean companies fear that if such development continues, Chinese companies will sooner or later take control of the entire industry chain, from upstream equipment to downstream products.

In the more recent decades, LG Electronics has steadily established a few factories in other countries and places such as New Zealand, Australia, Asian nations, and American countries as well. Some of their Korean plants even migrated to these nations too.

LG opened a new factory in Hai Phong, Vietnam, back in 2015 for the purpose of producing smartphones. In April 2021, however, just 6 years after the LG factory was established, the company decided to discontinue the production of its mobile phones.

It was announced afterward that the Hai Phong plant has been refocusing on the production of household appliances and other electronics since LG Vietnam manufactures led TVs from the start.

LG has factories in China, notably in the industrial city of Guangzhou, China. They produce TVs, smartphones, air conditioners, and other LG products. Production of liquid crystal displays seems to be more of the focus in this plant, as it was listed to be under LG Display.

In 2021, it was reported that LG Display was expanding its production capacity of OLED displays used for their top-tier TVs in the Guangzhou factories due to cheaper labor and materials.

LG Electronics exports up to 10% of their total component production in LG India. One of the TV products initially sold for the Indian market was the ‘mosquito-repelling television,’ which uses ultrasonic waves that causes mosquitoes to avoid the area.

LG factories in LG Indonesia are the longest-running factories for the company, established way back in 1990. Recently, before the COVID-19 pandemic, two factories in Gumi, South Korea[1]are gradually moving production to Indonesia.

These LG Korean plants were migrated as a strategy to better respond to the consumer demands in Southeast Asia and Australia. OLED displays and Ultra HD TVs will be the primary focus of these two production lines.

LG established LG TV factories in Ruza, which manufacture TVs at an estimated 1 million TV units annually. While the facility ships LG products to Eastern European countries, it does face tight competition with Polish LG facilities.

Furthermore, plans are already in place to establish a multi-million EUR plant in Wroclaw, Poland, with LG intent on making it the biggest battery plant in the world. Suffice to say, LG TV factories won’t be leaving Poland anytime soon.

We have LG Russia and Poland for the European market, but what about the USA? In Mexico, LG manufactures TVs for the North American market through its TV factory in Reynosa.

To cope with the demand for LG TVs in the US, South America, and Latin America, Mexico LG reportedly increased its TV production capacity in the country last 2019.

There are industry overlaps in Mexico, the strongest industry being electronic production, which greatly benefits the appliance manufacturing sector. It was reported that more brands are establishing factories in Mexico along with LG.

Chinese brands like TCL and Hisense are producing TVs with high specifications and large screens like LG does. Given their long history in manufacturing televisions and the revenue growth, this has contributed to the company, one thing is clear: an LG TV is built to last.

Samsung Display will stop producing LCD panels by the end of the year. The display maker currently runs two LCD production lines in South Korea and two in China, according to Reuters. Samsung tells The Verge that the decision will accelerate the company’s move towards quantum dot displays, while ZDNetreports that its future quantum dot TVs will use OLED rather than LCD panels.

The decision comes as LCD panel prices are said to be falling worldwide. Last year, Nikkei reported that Chinese competitors are ramping up production of LCD screens, even as demand for TVs weakens globally. Samsung Display isn’t the only manufacturer to have closed down LCD production lines. LG Display announced it would be ending LCD production in South Korea by the end of the 2020 as well.

Last October Samsung Display announced a five-year 13.1 trillion won (around $10.7 billion) investment in quantum dot technology for its upcoming TVs, as it shifts production away from LCDs. However, Samsung’s existing quantum dot or QLED TVs still use LCD panels behind their quantum dot layer. Samsung is also working on developing self-emissive quantum-dot diodes, which would remove the need for a separate layer.

Samsung’s investment in OLED TVs has also been reported by The Elec. The company is no stranger to OLED technology for handhelds, but it exited the large OLED panel market half a decade ago, allowing rival LG Display to dominate ever since.

Although Samsung Display says that it will be able to continue supplying its existing LCD orders through the end of the year, there are questions about what Samsung Electronics, the largest TV manufacturer in the world, will use in its LCD TVs going forward. Samsung told The Vergethat it does not expect the shutdown to affect its LCD-based QLED TV lineup. So for the near-term, nothing changes.

One alternative is that Samsung buys its LCD panels from suppliers like TCL-owned CSOT and AUO, which already supply panels for Samsung TVs. Last year The Elec reported that Samsung could close all its South Korean LCD production lines, and make up the difference with panels bought from Chinese manufacturers like CSOT, which Samsung Display has invested in.
