Print Unable 46 is an error message that will occur if the ink absorbers are almost full. When the printhead is cleaned, the ink absorbers hold the ink that is clean from them. Typically, the ink absorbers should last for the life of the machine. If this message appears, it is possible that it is not correct. By updating the machine’s firmware the message should go away.

A multifunctional printer can have problems with communicating between different devices or phone lines. When sending or receiving a fax there could be an interference with the phone line. In this case, try resending the fax. If the message persists, the problem may be because of an incorrect setup of the printer or the phone line. Disconnect the other lines to try to identify what is causing the problem. Ensure that the machine is connected accurately and reconnect the different lines individually.

If the documents being printed are being sent to fax instead of printing, the problem can be easily resolved. The printer setting needs to be changed. Right click on the printer icon in the control panel menu. Click to make it the default device.

The LCD display screen on the printer will show an error message that says “Media full” when a memory card is used that is full. Printers can only save a certain amount of files, therefore if the memory card contains too many it will be able to work with the printer. Try deleting any unnecessary files to free up space on the memory card.

The printer will display messages when it is unable to follow through on a command, whether that is to clean, print, init, or scan. To resolve these issues first, clean the encoder strip. Dirt or foreign particles on the strip is a common cause for many issues. It is important to look up specific directions since each printer model will be slightly different. To clean the strip use a lint-free cloth such as a dry monitor cloth or a T-shirt. It is important to NOT use any paper products. The encoder strip is a clear plastic strip that is located in front of a white band. There will usually be a warning to not touch this strip. That is because it shouldn’t be touched with hands since the oils can damage it.

Sometimes when you go to hit print and the printer begins to warm up, you might hear a disturbing clicking sound. In some cases, the click will begin when you hit print, but then stop and continue printing. In other cases, the clicking will continue and you might not be able to print at all. There are a few possible reasons for the noise. First, if you just replaced your drum unit it is possible that the unit is defective. If the problem persists, the drum unit will need to be replaced for one that works. In other cases, there could be something that is out of alignment of calibration. There is a slider on the drum unit that might be out of alignment. Try sliding it back and forth and make sure it is in the proper position before reinserting it back into the printer. Another possible solution is to check for any obstructions, such as paper. Make sure nothing is blocking the drum unit before trying to print again.

With an HP LaserJet printer, this error might occur when the memory or file system failures will not allow a mopy job to occur. The term mopy may seem like a typo at first, but it is a term for multiple original copies, multiple original prints, or multiple original outputs. A mopy enabled printer produces “mopies” while a photocopier produces copies. A computer user will select an option to print a certain amount of copies of a document via an application or the printer driver interface. When a mopy job error appears, only one copy will be a printer. To resolve this issue, reset the RAM DIMMS and/or the EIO hard disk. Additional memory may need to be installed.

A cleaning page is a process that helps clean the inside of the printer. The process is usually the best when using a sheet of transparency or copier grade paper (18 to 24 lb) with a smooth surface. The printer should be idle and the ready light should be on before processing a cleaning page. The wait time for the cleaning page to process may vary. It can take anywhere from 2 minutes to 5 minutes to be completed.

If the printer produces a page of gray text instead of black it may be because of the print density setting or the photoreceptor. Many laser printers have a print density control that allows users to manipulate the tones of the printed ink. Increase the print density for a deeper and blacker hue. The photoreceptor may also be the culprit of the problem. Over time, the photoreceptor will wear out, hold less of a charge, and ultimately transfer less toner from the developer to the page. This means that the print will look gray. Increasing the print density setting will most likely solve the problem, but eventually, it will need to be replaced. On the other hand, if the print density is too high then a gray background will be produced from an excess of toner. Try adjusting the print density slowly to find the best setting.

If the printed page has spots on it which are spaced at large intervals there is a possibility of a hole, scratch, dent or other flaws on the surface of the photoreceptor. If this piece of the printer can be removed, do so and examine it to determine if there is a flaw. If one is found, then this unit will need to be replaced entirely. If the photoreceptor can’t be removed then it will be necessary to call a service technician to inspect the machine.

The way spots appear on a printed page is important in determining how they are being made and finding a possible solution. Spots that happen at close intervals may be caused by a deposit of toner that is on the fuser. Turn the printer off for at least 15 minutes to allow the fuser to cool off.  The fuser is extremely hot so be caution and ensure that it has cooled properly. Examine the fuser cleaning pad for deposits of toner and replace the cleaning pad if necessary. Unfortunately, the fuser typically can’t be examined by itself and if the problem continues a

If you tried to print out an image, but it was split over two pages it is probably because of a lack of memory to process the page. More memory is required by the printer to print more complex pages and large graphics. Add additional memory if the problem continues to occur. If the printer does not need additional memory, then print a status sheet. A status sheet will show you how much memory is installed and if there are any memory errors. The issue could also be a formatting issue. Make sure that the document is formatted to fit one page. Before printing, check the print preview button to see if the image takes up one or two pages.

The split text is another error similar to split graphics. There may be a setup error in the software application that sends the text. Make sure that the program setup is set to the correct page length, margins, and font size. The split text is hardly caused by the printer itself, therefore look to the computer and the programs that you are printing from for a setup error.

On many multifunction printers, duplex printing is an option. This type of printing allows users to print on both sides of the paper. There are many common errors that can occur with double sided printing. One of the most famous problems is that the pages print upside down and on the backside of the paper. The solution is to select the landscape or portrait produces vertical flipping option. This should change the print job to be the correct orientation. Another annoying problem is that the pages have to be put in order after they have printed. There should be an option for print pages in reverse in the Advanced settings box. Only select this if the pages must be put in order once the printing is complete.

The LCD screen is vital for operating the printer. Should you encounter any kind of trouble, such as a dead screen, corrupted text, or other issues, please refer to the guide below.

First of all, unscrew the LCD screen from the printer frame, remove both M3x10 screw holding it the LCD board in the plastic casing, and remove it from the casing. See if the problem still appears when the LCD is not pressed by the casing.

Firmware updates are necessary to keep your printer up to date. However, the installation of incorrect firmware can lead to letter corruption on the LCD screen. There"s an easy fix, though:

There is a small chance the printer"s LCD screen can glitch out by electrostatic discharge when inserting the SD card. Try to turn the printer off and on again.

This problem usually appears only on user-assembled printers. If your printer"s LCD screen remains blank or displays corrupted symbols after you turn on the printer, there is a chance it is caused by incorrect wiring. Follow these steps to fix the issue.

Double-check that all cables are properly seated and they are not visibly damaged. Depending on the model of your printer, please refer to the following guides for information on how to make sure the cables are properly connected: Einsy RAMBo electronics wiring (MK3/MK3S/MK3S+) and Mini RAMBo electronics wiring (MK2S, MK2.5, MK2.5S).

If you suspect that the LCD ribbon cables connectors are not firmly seated in the slots, disconnect the LCD ribbon cables and check the slots for any bent pins. If there are bent pins, you can use tweezers to fix them. However, be very careful not to break the pin(s) completely.

If none of the above resolved the problem, turn the printer off again and try to unplug both of the cables, lay them down on a flat surface and gently stretch them. Then plug them back in and turn on the printer.

I’ve recently acquired a few printers for salvaging the stepper motors out of them. In taking one apart (specifically a Brother MFC-5860CN), I found that the LCD had a 6 pin ribbon cable connected to it. I figured it wouldn’t be too hard to figure out the communication protocol and talk to it so I gave it a shot. Well it wasn’t too hard, but it did take some time and effort.

In case you can’t read upside down and backwards, it says “Please Wait”. I needed to figure out how it was sending those words over the 6 wires that the LCD was connected with. So then I connected my logic analyzer to my computer and started capturing data. The logic analyzer only captures logic for a short window of time, and the message seen above only appears on the screen for about 2 seconds so I had to be quick and precise. I would plug the printer in, then wait a second or so, and then hit capture on the logic analyzer software. This was not easy. After struggling for about an hour I finally got something that looked like the data I was looking for, but I wasn’t sure.

Another quick Google search of “spi tutorial” lead me to a couple of tutorials (first one, second one). Turns out that mysterious line that would go logic low when data was sent was the slave select line. Plugging what I learned into the logic analyzer software and tweaking the settings a bit led me to a really geeky point in my life. I saw the following on the screen and was more excited than I’d like to admit:

“Please Wait” it said. I had learned the language of the LCD. It was using SPI! Now it was time to rig up my arduino to talk to the LCD. So then I did this:

Don’t worry, this isn’t the same connector from before that I soldered wires to for use with the logic analyzer (you were worried weren’t you). Luckily I had a similar Brother printer that used the same LCD and connector. I desoldered the connector from that printer very carefully since it’s mostly made of plastic and plastic tends to melt when you poke it with a soldering iron. Then I soldered on some wires and plugged it in to a breadboard with a 16MHz/5v Arduino pro mini on it. And then, I wrote some code using the SPI library to recreate what I was seeing on the logic lines. And then, I wired everything up and uploaded the code… And then it didn’t work.

My best guess was that, even though I was dividing the clock frequency by 128, 125kHz (16MHz / 128) was just too fast for the little LCD. hrm. Measuring the wavelength of the clock signal in the logic analyzer software showed me that the printer was sending data at 33kHz-ish. I had a 4.096MHz crystal lying around which, with the same setup, would get me to 32kHz. Close enough. I busted out my DIP Atmega328P, wired it up with the crystal, wired it to my Pocket Programmer, plugged it in, tried to program it, remembered that for some reason the pocket programmer only works with the old version of the arduino software, opened arduino version 22, sucessfully programmed the Atmega, and… no luck. Now I was really confused.

My best guess now was that I missed something when looking at the logic. Maybe there was something required at start up for the LCD to work. But I wasn’t about to try and get the timing perfect by plugging in the printer manually and manually clicking capture. That was ridiculous last time, and it took way too long to find the window of logic where the communication was happening. If I tried that method again, frustration and anger would happen, and something might be destroyed. I previously had an idea that I could use my controllable power outlet and some Java code to automate the process of plugging the printer in and pressing the capture button on the logic analyzer software.

I figured I could use some keyboard simulation to press the enter key with focus on the capture button, and that didn’t turn out to be very hard at all. I found that Java’s Robot class made it really easy to simulate the enter key being pressed. Now I needed to figure out how to connect to a device on a COM port, and read from it. This device would be an arduino connected to my controllable power outlet. However, doing this in Java turned out to be not so easy. In fact, apparently this is no longer supported in Java. That sucks. Now what to do.

I combined some proof of concept python scripts and created a script that would allow you to specify waiting times (in milliseconds) for the turning on of the power outlet and the pressing of the enter button. By changing these times (mostly just the power outlet time) I was able to capture data from right after the printer was turned on. There ended up being nothing really useful there, however I kept playing and found a set of wait times that would capture the beginning of the data transmission (which I had seen before when I found it manually). Looking more closely at this logic, I found a sequence of numbers (13, 72 ,9) being sent before each transmission. When I uploaded the program with this sequence of numbers at the beginning of the transmission and did some rewiring it said “Hi”.

I had done it! I successfully reverse engineered the LCD. I turned it on and off a couple of times, dragged my wife over to show her my accomplishment, and then realized that there was something wrong. Occasionally when I turned it on, the letters would smear down so that there were ugly lines showing on the screen instead of the text that was supposed to be showing. It was great that I had figured out how to make something show on the screen, but I wasn’t finished. This project was not complete (are you tired of reading yet?).

My first guess this time was that there was noise in the lines and I needed some filtering caps. After looking at the PCB from the printer, I found that there were some capacitors on there that I had missed when recreating the circuit. So then, I measured the values with a multimeter and found some lying around that had the same value. But inserting these capacitors into my circuit did not fix the problem.

In my original measurements to figure out the ground and power lines of the LCD, I had found that there were 2 lines that read as 5v which were pin 1 and pin 3. I had previously noticed that with only pin 1 connected to 5v the LCD would not work at all, so I had connected pins 1 and 3 together so that they were both at 5v. This was my current setup. I tried the only other option of connecting only pin 3 to 5v, and voila!, the LCD was turning on and printing the text (now “Hello World?”) every time. However, the screen was much more dim than it was when it had occasionally worked with the previous setup.

I was starting to get the idea that pin 1 was the contrast pin, and, after testing my theory by plugging pin 1 into my 5v line on my breadboard after the text was already showing, I found that to the best of my knowledge that pin 1 was indeed a contrast pin. So now my idea was that I needed to pull pin 1 high after the text was already being displayed. I wired pin 1 to pin 12 on my ATMega chip (arduino pin 6) and rewrote my program to turn on pin 6 after the text was being displayed. At this point I’m feeling like I should be really close to just stomping on the whole thing if it doesn’t work. It didn’t work (however it was surprisingly not that frustrating).

I had one last idea to try before I was ready to quit and write this project off as beyond my current knowledge. There were periods of hundreds of milliseconds that I had not seen in the logic. It was time to stop taking shortcuts and just figure the whole thing out, so I, once again, got out my controllable power outlet setup, and started precisely writing down everything that I saw in the logic. What I found (from my notes):
