The deal is to supply gases for its latest 8.5 generation TFT-LCD manufacturing plant in Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP), China. Industrial gases are essential to the production of transistors that control the pixels in LCD screens.
This major gas supply contract marks a further milestone in Linde’s continuing expansion in Asia and is strategically significant for Linde LienHwa’s position in eastern China. It also strengthens Linde’s position as a gas supplier for the electronics industry, demonstrating the increasing demand for the company’s gases and solutions from electronics manufacturers across the world. Linde has become the first choice gas supply partner for TFT-LCD manufacturing in China with substantial gas contracts in place with the three largest flat panel display manufacturers.
Very large volumes of ultra-high purity gases play a critical part in the manufacture of TFT-LCD screens. They are used to create the microscopic thin-film transistors (TFT) required to control each of the thousands of pixels that make up the visible image.
Under this agreement, Linde LienHwa will provide Samsung Electronics with a turnkey installation of the TFT-LCD plant’s bulk gases supply systems, with a gas-on-line date of the end of 2012. Linde LienHwa’s extensive scope includes the construction of a new on-site SPECTRA-N 30,000 series nitrogen generator supplying gas to Samsung via an underground pipeline. Overall investment is in the region of €50 million. This will double Linde LienHwa’s capacity in Suzhou Industrial Park and demonstrates the significant growth potential of this market.
“This new project significantly strengthens our industry references and reinforces our leading role in the TFT-LCD industry. The agreement with Samsung Electronics demonstrates our commitment to help our customers develop state of the art manufacturing solutions. It also shows we are confident about the growth of the electronics market in Asia,” said Andrew Lau, President and General Manager of Linde LienHwa China.
Peter Owen, Head of Linde’s Global Electronics business and Asia Joint Venture Management, concludes: “This significant contract is further acknowledgement of our global capability to supply and service leading TFT-LCD manufacturers with a full portfolio of gases and equipment. We look forward to building a strong working relationship with Samsung Electronics at their Suzhou site.”
Munich, Germany, 1 November 2011 – Linde LienHwa (LLH), The Linde Group"s joint venture with LienHwa MiTAC Group of Taiwan, today announced a further strengthening of its commitment to the TFT-LCD industry in China with the opening of a major ultra-high purity gas plant at BOE Technology Group Co. Ltd"s (BOE) latest 8.5 generation TFT-LCD manufacturing facility in the Beijing Development Authority. The significant facility investment is part of the Chinese government’s first endorsed project aimed at boosting the country’s TFT-LCD industry.
The on-stream supply marks a significant milestone in the cooperation between LLH and BOE, a leading TFT-LCD panel manufacturer for televisions, mobile devices and display light products, and follows the 15-year bulk gas supply contract and electronic gas agreements signed in 2010 and 2011.
Very large volumes of ultra-high purity gases play a critical part in the manufacture of TFT-LCD technologies. They are used to create the microscopic thin-film transistors required to control each of the thousands of pixels that make up the visible image.
The growing local demand has made China a preferred manufacturing destination for TFT-LCD technologies, supported by several initiatives by the Chinese government. Government support also includes direct investment which was a key driver for BOE in this installation.
According to DisplaySearch, China is the top TV market contributing to 17 percent of the global TV shipments by Q2 2011. Production capacity in China is expected to grow at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 60 percent between 2010 and 2014, increasing China’s share by more than double. BOE is contributing significantly to this growth.
The on-stream supply at BOE"s latest 8.5 generation TFT-LCD manufacturing facility reinforces Linde’s leading position in bulk gases supply business to Chinese electronics customers and expands LLH’s footprint in the Greater Beijing region where several significant growth opportunities are expected.

For example, the display is made up of a number of components. At its heart is a thin-film transistor liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) panel, which is mated with a backlight assembly and bezel. The TFT-LCD panels are made by a handful of Asian manufacturers in large, capital-intensive factories — the most recent of these cost more than $6 billion each to build and equip. These panel makers, in turn, are dependent on others who supply essential raw materials such as optically flat glass sheets, polarizing films, flexible circuit connectors, display driver chips, and a host of other inputs. The display driver chips are made in semiconductor factories (“fabs”) spread around the world.
Capital efficiency — how much capital you have deployed in your business — is another thing that is important to shareholders and Wall Street analysts. Nobody wants to pay for idle or underutilized capacity, and in sectors where the capital expenditures for plant and equipment are extraordinarily high (think semiconductors, flat panel displays, automotive assembly, materials processing), investors applaud the outsourcing or offshoring to someone who is willing to invest or to a geography where they can receive subsidies.
The desire to avoid capital investments also leads to risk aversion to investing in new manufacturing technologies. I worked with a company that was supplying quantum dot backlighting technology for LCD flat-panel displays. Manufacturers were insistent that any new technologies had to fit into their existing capital-intensive workflows. I also heard a leader of a U.S. Department of Energy R&D group worry about how the extensive battery-manufacturing infrastructure in China had moved so effectively down the cost curve that it made it difficult for a potentially superior new technology from several MIT spinoffs to compete let alone raise the capital for a new production facility. The problem for the United States is exacerbated by countries like China that subsidize the construction and equipping of new production facilities.
In recent time, China domestic companies like BOE have overtaken LCD manufacturers from Korea and Japan. For the first three quarters of 2020, China LCD companies shipped 97.01 million square meters TFT LCD. And China"s LCD display manufacturers expect to grab 70% global LCD panel shipments very soon.
BOE started LCD manufacturing in 1994, and has grown into the largest LCD manufacturers in the world. Who has the 1st generation 10.5 TFT LCD production line. BOE"s LCD products are widely used in areas like TV, monitor, mobile phone, laptop computer etc.

MH Manufacturing, a SEACOMP company, is a premier contract manufacturer of electronics and electronic components for the global industrial, consumer and medical markets. We manufactured custom Gorilla Glass PCAP for 4.3" TFT LCD displays for compression therapy devices. Our capabilities employed included tooling, sample verification, touchscreen production engineering, firmware programming and testing, display assembly production and testing.
TFT assembly, capacitive touch assembly, programming and test equipment were used for manufacturing. The part had 140.6 x 89.4 x 5.15 mm dimensions with ±0.05 mm being the tightest tolerance. We used 1.1 mm Gorilla Glass, PCAP touch sensors, FPC and Displaytech 4.3" TFT LCD modules for the assembly. The glass had anti-glare coating on it. To make sure the product met the required standards, we employed various testing/inspections including LCD, Touch Panel functional and visual testing on all the products. 10 units per production run were tested to see if they met critical specification FAI reports.
