Cleaning your electronic device display is not second nature but should be performed periodically. As a trusted LCD manufacturer, we would like to ensure our customers are informed on proper cleaning techniques so they can educate their production facilities and customer base. The same process can be applied to displays with cover lenses and touch screen displays.
There are very few items you will need when cleaning an electronic device screen: A cloth and possibly a cleaning solvent. It is important to use a soft cloth because rough items like paper towels can cause scratches and potentially damage the screen. A microfiber cloth works best, since the material is soft and lint-free, leaving no residue or debris on the screen. If cleaning with a dry microfiber cloth alone doesn’t work, it’s possible to use a cleaning solvent.
Not all solvents are acceptable for use on electronic display screens. Table 1 below lists which common cleaning solvents are acceptable and unacceptable for use. Distilled water is the preferred solvent since it’s the least damaging to your display screen. Repeated use of alcohol/ammonia based cleaners can cause permanent damage. The screen can become brittle and eventually crack. Also, a yellow discoloration has been reported from constant use. There are pre-made electronic cleaning pads which contain a safe cleaner solution that can be used for quick and convenient cleaning. Appropriate supplies along with proper technique help prolong a display’s lifespan.
When cleaning, never spray or apply the cleaner directly to the display: Always apply the cleaner to the cloth. It’s also important to never use more than gentle pressure when cleaning your display. Too much pressure can damage the display stack-up. Wiping gently in horizontal and vertical movements works best for removing most debris, while circular movements can be used to apply extra attention to trouble areas.
If the LCD module is a part of an assembly, make sure to clean the whole product. For example, if you clean the display of a laptop computer but not the keyboard, and then proceed to close the laptop, the display will be exposed to all the contaminants from the keyboard.
The screen for the navigation and audio system in your is more than likely a "Thin Film Transistor Liquid Crystal Display" (TFT LCD), which is very similar to the screen in a laptop computer. It not only uses advanced micro-technology to operate, it"s also coated to minimize glare and remain sharp and vivid almost all the time.
Make sure the screen in your car is turned off - you don"t want to interfere with any pixels while they"re still firing. Turning off the screen will also allow you to see dirt, dust, and grime better because you"re working with a dark surface.
Find your microfiber cloth. These soft, dry cloths are the same type of cloth you would use to clean your smartphone, eyeglasses or tablet. They"re perfect for the LCD screens in cars because they’re non abrasive. A high quality microfiber cloth will work efficiently when dry to clean most screen dirt and dust.
What not to do: You don’t want to use paper towels or old cotton rags because these can scratch your screen. These materials are both highly abrasive, and neither will be particularly good at lifting dirt from the screen’s surface. If you use one of these, your monitor will still be kind of dirty, and you run the risk of scratching or leaving behind lint particles.
Gently wipe the screen with the microfiber cloth from top to bottom using a circular motion. Try not to press too hard as this can damage your LCD screen. Continue to use the microfiber cloth to remove any remaining smudgy oils.
If you have a lot of dirt or any other tough sort of build up on your device, then you’ll probably need to use something more than a dry cloth. Spray your microfiber with a small amount of ammonia and alcohol free screen cleaning solution. Ordinary household window or kitchen cleaners, should never be used, as the alcohol or ammonia in the cleaner will damage the screen.
Avoid getting moisture in any ports on the car’s dashboard and don’t let the cleaning solution sit on the multimedia or satellite navigation screen for too long.
Do not wipe or clean your touch screen with paper towels or facial tissues, as these can scratch the surface. Using a microfiber cloth is the only safe way to clean your touch screen.
Unlike paper towels, our gentle microfiber cloths clean the sensitive glass on your touch screen without scratching the surface. The microfiber attract and removes unwanted oils and dust, whereas other product simply spread them around.

This section applies, but is not limited to cleaning the following devices, screens and other sensitive surfaces with the ROGGE DUO-Clean Screen Cleaning Kit and the ROGGE Screen Cleaner:
Glass cleaners and other household cleaners contain substances which potentially harm your TV, display, computer screen or optical lenses. For example alcohol, ammonia and citrus acids can attack and dull your screen and lens surface. The damage is usually irreversible.
You will basically always get streaks on your TV or computer screen when cleaning in direct sunlight, just like when you clean your car or house windows. Direct sunlight will make the cleaner evaporate too fast, which prevents the cleaning agents from doing their job.
As with the direct sunlight mentioned above, heat will make the cleaner evaporate too quickly. The cleaning agents can’t do their job and you will have streaks on the screen. Make sure the display or surface is at or below room temperature.
If you apply too much pressure while cleaning, you will likely damage the screen or electronics inside the screen. This is not a kitchen sink. Today’s LED, LCD, and OLED TV and computer screens are very thin and not made to withstand excessive pressure. Let the cleaner do the job, not the friction from applying too much pressure.
Regular tap water contains lime, minerals and other impurities. They are not good for TV or computer screens and can actually damage them permanently. Distilled water is an ineffective cleaner, it just smears and distributes the dust, dirt and oils. There are actually DIY websites advising people to make their own cleaner by mixing distilled water and alcohol. Very bad idea! The alcohol can permanently damage the screen or lens surface.
The ROGGE Microfiber Cloth performs the best when clean. It is specifically designed to clean optical lenses and display screens. It can be used multiple times between washing. If there is dirt clearly visible on the ROGGE Microfiber Cloth, it’s probably time to wash it.A dirty Microfiber Cloth increases the risk of being abrasive on your screen, because the particles accumulated during cleaning can’t be contained within the Microfiber anymore.
Every cleaning cloth has specific properties and is made for specific applications in various quality levels. Your average Microfiber Cloth is not what you want to use. It won’t trap the dirt particles sufficiently and leaves lint all over your display screen. Paper towels are probably the worst, since they are way too abrasive on the screen. This is why we offer the patented ROGGE Microfiber Cloths, which are specifically designed and made for cleaning LED, LCD, OLED, Plasma TV, Computer screens, lenses and other sensitive surfaces. It is also authorized and approved by various screen manufactures. ROGGE Microfiber Cloths work great on windows and mirrors too!
