The brand new KTM 125 DUKE and KTM 390 DUKE have been unleashed on the street with the promise of delivering riding enjoyment that punches way above their respective displacements. Available now in KTM dealers across Europe, these two machines have received front-to-back enhancements for 2017 to keep them at the top.

Instantly noticeable and impossible to ignore is the updated styling; incredibly aping the performance powerhouse – KTM 1290 SUPER DUKE R. Onlookers are immediately greeted by the KTM 125 DUKE and KTM 390 DUKE’s distinctive new LED headlight, flanked by more aggressive, sharper bodywork with a seat unit that exposes more of the sportier geometry chassis and new bolt-on subframe.

The ergonomics of these lightweight fighters is also altered, with a more authoritative riding position that simultaneously doesn’t sacrificing comfort and is backed up by a revised rider and passenger seats. DUKE pilots will also benefit from a 2.4 liter larger fuel tank; this not only creates better leg contact and feel with the machines, but the 13.4 liter capacity will take ambitious riders further than ever.

Boasting top level chassis and braking components, the completely new WP Suspension front and back further adds to the ‘next level’ potential of the two DUKEs. For bikes that will be used in such diverse ways around the world, the open-cartridge fork and separate piston technology damper help give riders of all types and ability the comfort for commuting and confidence in the corners.

The two DUKEs can also claim to be the first bikes in their respective segments to boast multifunction TFT displays. Much more than a mere gadget, its versatile configuration options and advanced rider interface take rider information to the next stage. For the modern, urban commuting environment, the optional KTM MY RIDE package uses Bluetooth connectivity to provide smartphone integration for the hands-free calling acceptance and audio player functionality seamlessly integrated into the TFT display and conveniently operated via the menu switch on the handlebar.

Professional stuntrider, Rok Bagoroš, has performed around the world on the previous generation KTM 125 DUKE and 390 DUKE since they were launched. After riding both new bikes at the international press event, he said: “For performance and looks wise, these new bikes are once again on another level,” the 27-year old Slovenian explained. “I was expecting a small update but these are brand-new bikes – it’s like nothing compared to the previous bikes. I love the sharp edges and how it looks like the KTM 1290 SUPER DUKE. But also, the suspension, brakes and power delivery is big a step up.”

Q. I am planning to buy KTM 390 Duke, I need suggestions if the seats are comfortable for a pillion, I always have one pillion rider and we travel to native place every weekend about (400kms).

On the KTM, you sit in a very compact position, with your legs tucked in behind a bit because of the rear-set footpegs. While it helps you flick the bike better in corners, your knees end up feeling a little cramped over long journeys on the highway. As for the pillion, the seat space is decent and is comfortable for city stints. However, the seat is a bit stiff for longer journey and the pillion would not be able to spend longer hours on the saddle. Hi Brian, what do you mean by the term “cut out” ? Does the engine stalls or it doesn’t respond ? If that is the case then you need to visit the service center. If you don’t mean engine stalling or shut down then your answer is that Duke 390 has a very High Compression Engine. Hence whenever you slow down from a very high speed, you have to select the gears and clutch release ratio accordingly. It has to be in conjunction of the selected gear. Try practising it. If still you feel the same. You should visit the service center and ask the professional to ride the bike at your desired speed where you are sitting as a pillion and ask them to slow down to reproduce the issue. Check if it’s still happening. Ask them to repair the same. If they say that it’s normal then it’s okay.

Q. I want to buy my first bike. I have selected three options, Duke 390, Apache 310, Dominar 400. I"m confused which bike I should buy. I want bike for both office and sometimes back to my hilly hometown. Please suggest me.

As a Duke 390 owner I will never suggest Duke 390 as a first bike to anyone whatsoever. Even dominor too as its powerful and have good amount of weight to it. Bs6 apache 310 would be a very good starting bike as it as different riding modes which reduce the power output by 10bph in rain and city mode. If you are into supersport like re 310 go for it. It"s pretty comfortable for city as well as long distance touring as it is not have dedicated riding position as R15 v3 and rc 390. If you like naked sports then go for dominor 400 as it gives mileage and superb touring capabilities as well. And for Duke 390 go for it if you are experienced rider and mileage doesn"t matter. Both 33 r10 and d 400 is way better than Duke 390 on the heating issue, but Bs6 390 is updated and have way better heating than bs4. And atlast please test drive all of these bikes, see what"s you are comfortable with and then chose.
