The instrument cluster in a car contains the different displays and indications that allow the driver to control the vehicle. Several instruments, such as a speedometer, odometer, tachometer, oil pressure gauge, fuel gauge, and other indicators for system failures and alerts, are among them.
Load drivers each physical (non-graphical) gauge is controlled by its own stepper motor. In addition, almost all instrument clusters have LED backlighting. To function properly, each of these devices requires a load driver. The stepper motor drivers are often integrated into the instrument cluster MCU; however, the LED backlight driver is implemented as an independent IC.
Within a node, LINs (Local Interconnect Network) handle network communication. A LIN network has a broadcast architecture with a single master – often an MCU – and up to 12 slave devices. It is inexpensive and easy to set up.
An integrated CAN and/or LIN transceiver is frequently included in instrument cluster MCUs for connecting with numerous sensors throughout the vehicle. The microcontroller may additionally have stepper motor drivers for actuating various gauges, as previously indicated.
Power Management in Low-dropout regulators are particularly effective in situations where there is a lot of load, such as when using an electric starter. External memory, stepper motors, one or more MCUs, CAN interface, LIN interface, and LED backlighting are all examples of instrument cluster components that can work at different voltage levels. When designing for efficiency, compactness, low cost, and low EMI, careful thought is essential because there are so many distinct power rails.

Headlining in Santa Fe Elite and Highlander is a futuristic 12.3-inch high-resolution LCD digital Supervision digital instrument cluster that presents displays including speedometer and tachometer dials, Drive Mode themes, and SmartSenseTM info & alerts at a glance.
A high-tech 10.25-inch touch-screen is sited high on the dash in Santa Fe Elite and Highlander, to give front occupants a clear overview of navigation, audio and other information, with a choice of panoramic map view, or split-screen navigation/audio display.
Smartphone connectivity via Apple CarPlay™ or Android Auto™ allows users to perform the operations usually carried out on the handset in a safer manner via the in-dash multimedia touchscreen.
Santa Fe lets everyone plug in with one multimedia USB port and four USB charging Ports, including a port for third-row occupants. There are two 12V power outlets in the cabin.
A Driver Talk feature in Elite and Highlander uses a high-definition microphone and Santa Fe’s audio system to allow the driver to speak to rear occupants without raising their voice.
In Elite and Highlander variants regular user as well as guest settings for the cluster, display, media and driving mode can be stored in discrete profiles.
If a door is opened while an approaching vehicle is detected, the system will issue an audible alert and display a warning in the instrument cluster, advising that the exiting occupant should ‘watch for traffic’.
Additionally, the electronic child safety locking system works with the SEA system to prevent the unlocking of the rear doors when it is not safe to do so, providing an additional message advising that the exiting occupant should ‘Check surroundings then try again’.
Santa Fe features an extensive standard suite of SmartSenseTM driver assistance and advanced active safety technologies, and protects occupants with a suite of seven airbags, including a front centre side airbag.
The Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA) system, when active, utilises the front radar sensor and windscreen-mounted camera to detect and monitor vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists in front of Santa Fe.
If a potential collision is detected, the system’s Forward Collision Warning (FCW) function will sound a warning chime and display a warning in the cluster. FCW is active from speeds of 10 km/h, up to 85 km/h for pedestrians and cyclists, or 180 km/h for vehicles.
Additionally, FCA works in conjunction with FCW to automatically apply the vehicle’s brakes in the case of a potential collision (where no driver intervention is detected after a FCW system warning).
A Junction Turning (FCA-JT) function detects oncoming traffic when turning right (with the right indicator activated) at an intersection. If a collision appears likely, the brakes are applied to reduce the chance of a collision.
Operational at speeds above 60km/h, BCA can initiate the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system to help avoid a collision with an approaching vehicle, next to or behind Santa Fe, which it deems as being at a high risk of contact due to its proximity.
Driver Attention Warning (DAW) continually monitors the vehicle’s position within the lane using the windscreen-mounted camera, while tracking steering inputs, brake pedal inputs, and elapsed time since last break.
Should the system detect careless driving – such as sudden steering/braking inputs and/or inability to keep within a lane – the ‘Attention Level’ display on the cluster will continually decrease.
