The updated Kia Stinger is revealed in full detail for the first time today, with the high-performance fastback sports sedan boasting a range of upgrades to amplify its gran turismo character.

In addition to its refreshed design, revealed earlier this month, the enhanced Kia Stinger includes Kia’s latest driver assist and safety features, as well as improved interior packaging for greater space and comfort. For North America, the upgraded model is also now offered with a powerful new ‘Smartstream’ 2.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine.

“The Stinger remains the standard-bearer for the Kia brand, almost a decade after we first revealed the Kia GT Concept in 2011. It remains our most driver-focused car, and is capable of covering great distances in comfort and style,” said Thomas Schemera, Head of Product Division at Hyundai Motor Group. “The upgraded model builds on the Stinger’s well-established grand touring ethos, with a renewed sense of design flair, new powertrains and technologies, and greater usability enhancing its appeal for buyers in markets around the world.”

The new Kia Stinger will go on-sale in Korea during the third quarter of 2020, with sales due to commence in many of Kia’s global markets later in the year.

The upgraded Stinger offers a revised range of three powerful turbocharged gasoline engines, in line with its reputation as the most performance-focused car that Kia makes. Each engine offers swift acceleration and rapid responses to driver input, while offering a refined grand touring experience for steady cruises.

A new engine has been added to the Stinger line-up exclusively for North American customers. The new ‘Smartstream’ 2.5-liter T-GDi (turbocharged gasoline direct injection) engine sits directly between the two existing gasoline powertrains, producing 304 ps at 5,800 rpm. The maximum torque of the new four-cylinder engine, 422 Nm, is accessible from 1,650 to 4,000 rpm, making it easy for drivers to build and maintain speed in all conditions.

At the center of the Stinger’s upgraded cabin is an upgraded touchscreen infotainment system, providing new functionality to meet customers’ changing expectations of in-car technology.

Depending on market and specification, the upgraded Stinger is now available with an optional new 10.25-inch touchscreen display. Bluetooth multi-connection enables users to connect up to two mobile devices at the same time – one for hands-free phone and multimedia use; the other for media use only. Its advanced split-screen display lets users control or monitor different vehicle features at the same time, customizing the screen with a series of different widgets. The 10.25-inch system offers Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard, with a voice control system for many of the car’s features, such as heating and ventilation, audio and navigation.

A new 8.0-inch touchscreen display with a narrow-bezel design is also available, replacing the previous 7.0-inch system. Depending on market, the larger display also offers wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity.

Drivers have a choice of two instrument cluster displays, based on vehicle specification. The standard 3.5-inch mono-TFT cluster is now replaced with a larger 4.2-inch color-TFT LCD cluster, delivering improved visibility and displaying a wider range of information to the driver. In addition, a fully-digital, high-resolution 7.0-inch ‘Supervision’ cluster is available – a full-color display with vivid graphics for different driving modes, delivering crystal-clear information to the driver.

• Lane Keeping Assist (LKA) is now able to detect the edge of a road, as well as the lines in the road, providing steering assistance to prevent the driver leaving their lane without signaling

• A similar updated has been made for reversing out of parking bays, with Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist (RCCA) now helping to prevent collisions with crossing vehicles while reversing (previously the system only warned the driver)

• Safe Exit Warning (SEW) detects vehicles coming up from behind on either side of the Stinger when parked and stopped, alerting occupants with a sound and visual warning if they attempt to open the door into oncoming traffic

• Kia’s cutting-edge Blind-Spot View Monitor (BVM) technology acts as a ‘second pair of eyes’ for drivers by eliminating a driver’s left- and right-side blind spots. It displays a high-resolution video feed within the ‘Supervision’ digital instrument cluster if the driver indicates to change lane with another vehicle in their blind spot. The video feed comes from discreet wide-angle lenses hidden beneath the door mirror housings, giving drivers a wider viewing angle of their blind spots

Kia has also added the availability of a new Smartstream 2.5-litre T-GDi (turbocharged gasoline direct injection) that produces 304 PS at 5,800 rpm and 422 Nm between 1,650 and 4,000 rpm to the engine line-up. Unfortunately, this engine is available only for the USA market.

Kia has also updated the Stinger’s infotainment systems and digital driver displays. Depending on market, the Stinger will now have an optional 10.25-inch touchscreen display. Like the recently launched fourth generation 2020 Kia Carnival, the Stinger’s Bluetooth connection also allows users to connect up to 2 mobile devices at the same time.

The display is also highly customisable so users can arrange the split-screen display to suit their preference. The infotainment system also comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

As mentioned, the 10.25-inch display is optional for owners to make the upgrade. Those preferring not to upgrade will also get a larger 8-inch touchscreen display. The narrow bezel display will replace the outgoing 7-inch system and will also come with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Other than that, Kia also has 2 instrument cluster displays for drivers to pick from. One of which is a 4.2-inch colour-TFT LCD cluster that will replace the old 3.5-inch mono-TFT cluster.

Drivers can opt to upgrade to a 7-inch Supervision cluster that features vivid graphics for different driving modes and deliver crystal-clear information.

Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist (RCCA) has also been upgraded to help prevent collisions with crossing vehicles when the Stinger is reversing.

One more cutting edge ADAS on the Stinger is the Blind-Spot View Monitor (BVM) that will help eliminate the driver’s left and right-side blind spots by displaying a high-resolution video feed on the Supervision digital instrument cluster. BVM will be activated whenever the driver turns on the indicator lights.

All three variants are available in ‘2’, ‘3’ or highly specified ‘4’ grades, with a price rise of £2,750 between each trim level for all three models.

All models are available in a choice of eight colours, with premium paint options charged at £595. Top-spec ‘4’ models are offered with an optional two-tone paint option for £150 when combined with the standard paint, or £745 when combined with premium paint option. This option allows customers to specify the C-pillar in contrasting Steel Grey or Black Pearl, depending on the chosen body colour. The Niro EV ‘4’ is also available with an exclusive lighter grey interior, Steel Grey body cladding, and White Pearl paint for £745 over the £40,495 base price.

The latest car is an important model in Kia’s expansive eco-focused line-up, which is set to include 14 battery electric models by 2027. The Niro has become Kia’s second best-selling model in the UK since its launch in 2016, with more than 70,000 sold to-date. The fully electric e-Niro – introduced in 2018 – now accounts for 55 per cent of all Niro sales in the UK. During 2021 the e-Niro was also the second best-selling pure electric vehicle in the entire UK market.

The Niro Hybrid, Plug-in Hybrid and EV ranges follow a familiar and logical path when it comes to equipment levels, with a choice of ‘2’, ‘3’ or ‘4’ trim levels across all three variants.

All Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid ‘2’ models feature 16-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, cloth upholstery, a dual-height boot floor for extra versatility, rear parking sensors and camera system, an 8.0-inch touchscreen display with DAB radio, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and 4.2-inch supervision cluster. In addition, standard driver assistance technologies include Forward Collision Avoidance with car, pedestrian and cyclist recognition and junction crossing (FCA1.5) and Smart Cruise Control (SCC).

Niro EV ‘2’ models additionally pair an 8.0-inch touchscreen display with 10.25-inch instrument cluster, and also feature 17-inch alloy wheels, 11kW on-board charger, and a battery heating system.

For Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid variants, the move up to the mid-range ‘3’ grade brings 18-inch alloy wheels with Continental tyres, a larger 10.25-inch touchscreen with navigation system, cloth and faux leather upholstery, a 4.2-inch TFT instrument cluster, front parking sensors, keyless smart entry and start, and heated seats and steering wheel. Equipment also includes rear privacy glass, driver lumbar support, Highway Driving Assist (HDA), Blind Spot Collision Avoidance (BCA) for the rear, a wireless smartphone charger, and adjustable multi-angle rear seats.

On top of this, Niro EV ‘3’ models benefit Vehicle-to-Device (V2L) functionality with a three-pin plug socket as standard, with the option of a heat pump. V2L made its debut on the Kia EV6 and means that any unused battery charge can be used to power external electrical appliances, thanks to the bi-directional ability of the car’s EV power pack.

Crowning the Niro Hybrid, Plug-in Hybrid and EV line-up is the ‘4’ grade. This adds a head-up display, twin 10.25-inch touchscreen and instrument cluster display, heated rear seats and ventilated front seats, front passenger premium relaxation seating, a power operated tailgate, electric sunroof, an uprated Harman Kardon premium sound system, driver’s side memory seating, and front passenger lumbar support. Additional technologies include Remote Smart Parking Assist (RSPA), and Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist (PCA). The optional contrasting C-pillar is also available, while all ‘4’ grades – regardless of powertrain – feature PU vegan leather seat coverings, containing Tencel from eucalyptus trees.

The Niro Hybrid features Kia’s Smartstream 1.6-litre GDi (gasoline direct injection) engine paired with a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission (6DCT). This is combined with a 32 kW (43 bhp) permanent magnet synchronous electric motor, giving the powertrain a combined maximum power output of 139 bhp.

The Niro Hybrid also features a new intelligent ‘Green Zone’ Drive Mode, which automatically switches to electric power based on location guidance from the navigation system, driver patterns, or manual selection by the driver. For example, using the touchscreen drivers can designate built-up areas, roads close to schools and hospitals, or beauty spots as Green Zones, and the vehicle then automatically switches to electric-only driving to reduce exhaust emissions to zero in those environments (depending on battery state of charge).

Like the Niro Hybrid, the Plug-in Hybrid is powered by the same Smartstream 1.6-litre GDi petrol engine and 6DCT. It’s paired with a larger 62 kW (83 bhp) electric motor, resulting in a combined power output of 180 bhp. Engineers are targeting an electric-only driving range of up to 40 miles (WLTP, pending homologation) – more than enough for a driver to complete the average daily commute in the UK.
