Want to use a display on your keyboard, but don"t like the significant battery draw that usually comes with it? There"s a solution now: using the nice!view by Nice Technologies, you can make use of a highly efficient Memory-in-Pixel display by Sharp in a convenient form-factor.

It boasts a 30Hz refresh rate while drawing comparable power to an e-paper display. And with a resolution of 160 x 68 pixels in a 1.08" display, there"s plenty of space to go around!

This display uses SPI instead of I2C. This means it isn"t a direct drop-in replacement for other common displays such as the SSD1306: some modifications and hand-wiring may be required. You can refer to the documentation for usage instructions.

January 09, 2014 (Tokyo, Japan): Japan Display Inc. (JDI), a global leader in mobile display technologies, announced the start of mass production of a Memory-In-Pixel (MIP) reflective-type LCD module which realizes ultra-low power consumption. Since the display consumes very little electricity it is suitable for ultra-low power applications, like wearable devices, which are not recharged for long periods of time. In addition, a newly-developed scattering layer contributes to bright and crisp reflective-type images.

Since the new reflective-type display shows images by reflecting light it does not require a backlight, which typically contributes to approximately 80%* of the power consumption of an LCD module. Furthermore, since the MIP structure can keep screen images in the static random access memory transistor fabricated in each sub-pixel, in the case of still images, once data is written it is kept, and ultra-low power consumption is achieved. The new scattering layer optimizes the panel"s optical design, and enables a near paper-like display.

The color display will support development of new applications like wearable devices, smart watches, e-readers, etc., since the ultra-low power consumption display is able to relieve the battery load while maintaining good outdoor visibility.

JDI will be leading the electronic display industry by supplying LTPS, IPS, MIP, WhiteMagicTM, Pixel EyesTM in order to meet users" demands for small- and mid-sized displays that provide high resolution, high picture quality, and thin and light structure, with low power consumption.

Japan Display Inc. is one of the world"s leading providers of small- and medium-sized display panels. JDI was formed in March 30, 2012 by display manufacturing subsidiaries of Sony, Hitachi and Toshiba. Current shareholding of the company is approximately 70% by Industrial Network Corporation of Japan and approximately 10% each by the former parents of the subsidiaries. The company provides advanced displays, such as displays with high-definition, low-power-consumption and a thin structure, for use in smartphones, tablet PCs, automotive devices, digital cameras, medical equipment and other electronic devices.

Overall, TV LCD panel shipments increased to a peak of 23.4 million in December 2021, driven by low prices. But rising inflation, the Ukraine crisis and continued lockdowns in China have slowed demand. As a result, TV panel shipments posted a 9% month on month decline in April, to 21.7 million units.

Despite lower prices and mounting losses, Omdia also reported that Chinese panel makers, the biggest capacity owners, still haven"t reduced their fab utilization. With no sign of demand recovery in Q2 2022 or even Q3 2022, the supply/demand situation is unlikely to see improvement, explained Robin Wu, principal analyst for Large Area Display & Production, Omdia.

"IT LCD panels could still deliver positive cash flow for panel makers,” Wu said. “But with prices dropping dramatically, panel makers will soon start to lose money in their IT panel business. Maybe only then will panel makers reduce their glass input and the overall supply/demand situation will return to balance."

Overall, Omdia is reporting that shipments of large-area TFT LCD display panels dropped to historical lows in April as pandemic impacts combined with disruptions from the war in Europe and lockdowns in China to dampen demand.

Its data shows that large-area TFT LCD panel shipments decreased by 10% month on month in April compared to March and 5% compared to a year earlier to 74.1million units in April of 2022, representing historically low shipment performance since May 2020.

Apart from the MIP display, we would require a supportive display controller. The S1D13C00 model from Epson is a display controller for low-power memory and EInk EPD displays used in wearable devices. It supports interfaces with 6-bit color memory-in-pixel (MIP) panels, 3-bit and 1-bit black-and-white panels (SPI interface), EInk EPD panels (3/4-wire serial interface), and 1/2/4/8 bpp grayscale memory LCD panels (8-bit parallel or 3/4-wire serial).

There’s a decent chance Samsung-branded LCD flat panels used in digital signage jobs were already being manufactured by other companies, but that will definitely be the case going forward, as Samsung Display exits the LCD display manufacturing business and turns fully to third-party suppliers for that product line.

The Korea Times reports Samsung Display will close its LCD manufacturing business in June, and instead market flat panels made by third-party suppliers, like China’s BOE Technology Group and Taiwan’s AU Optronics. Samsung had been signalling it was getting out of direct manufacturing by the end of this year, but that decision has been accelerated by falling LCD prices that make direct manufacturing unprofitable.

Samsung will instead focus on quantum dots displays, which have visual quality levels that rival OLEDs. Samsung is already using quantum dots as the key enhancing component to its premium QLED displays, which are LCDs with a quantum dots layer. But the company is also developing QD-OLEDS, which like the acronym suggests are quantum dots integrated with OLEDs to make hybrid panels. The main attribute with quantum dots is that technology is its ability to amplify brightness, which has been something of a limiter for OLEDs.

The curious situation of display manufacturers being both mortal enemies and business partners is evident with multiple reports that Samsung will also market OLED panels, buying versions badged as Samsung from rival LG. In another twist, Samsung is said to be the original manufacturer of premium QD-OLED Sony TVs.

Samsung has been in the LCD business for three decades and was once the largest LCD TV panel supplier on the planet, but its market share is now just roughly two percent as lower cost, government-supported Chinese manufacturers have emerged and largely taken over.
