bmw lcd screen repair made in china
BMW 3 series (E36), 5 series (E34, E39), 7 series (E38), 8 series (E31), X5 from 1988-2003 all have the common dead / fading / disappearing pixels on the dashboard instrument cluster / speedometer (also on the board computer) - on the large LCD display that shows valuable data such as the mileage and the on board computer messages. The LCD display pixel problem lies with the OBC ribbon cable that connects the LCD display to the circuit board of the instrument cluster. The pictures below show the speedo / instrument cluster"s LCD display before and after the silver ribbon cable KIT replacement (just an example of several board computer / dashboard instrument cluster types):
The instrument cluster units in the BMW E38, E39 and X5 models from 1994-2003 are quite similar - (they were all produced by Siemens VDO) - using the same LCD and the same ribbon cable at all models. There are minor differences, like diesel or petrol powered ones, and also some speedos come with miles others with km/hrs, however the OBC LCD display and the ribbon cable is the same at all 5 series (E39) 7 series (E38) and X5 (E53) and M5 models.
Give a much newer look to your BMW with the facelift chrome rings. These chrome rings fit to BMW 5 series (E39), 7 series (E38), and X5 (E53) from 1994-2003. Easy to apply ring set, no special tools needed.

The OBC unit on the MID console - also known as radio / telephone unit on BMW E39, X5, M5 models from 1996-2003 are identical, using the same OBC LCD and the same ribbon cable. There are minor differences, like one comes with telephone button, others are witout, however the LCD display and the ribbon cable is the same at all 5 series (E39) X5 (E53) and M5 models.
Fits all E39 / E53 MID units assembled with bulbs (not leds). If you have uneven background light on the MID unit (some parts of the LCD are lighter, some are darker), most probably you have dead or almost dead bulbs.
The OBC unit on the MID console - also known as radio / telephone unit on BMW E38 from 1994-2003 have the very common fading or missing pixels, lines, columns.
Fits all BMW E38 7 series A/C (air conditioning) climate control units assembled with 2 small LCD"s - just like the one on the picture. Essential for dead or fading pixel repairs.
BMW 8 series (E31), from1988-1999 all have the common disappearing/fading pixels on the on board computer LCD. The problem lies with the ribbon cable that connects the LCD display to the circuit board of the MID.
BMW 3 series (E36), from1988-1999 all have the common disappearing / fading or completely dead LCD pixels on the board computer display. The problem lies with the ribbon cable that connects the LCD display to the circuit board of the MID. All 3 variants (8 / 11 / 16 buttons) are available.
This is a very common failure at BMW E90, E91, E92 BMW CD73 stereo / radio / head units, that the central display has missing lines and columns, missing and fading pixels all around the LCD display. Most common at BMW 3 series E90, but E91 E92 and other models are also affected.
This is a very common failure at BMW E90, E91, E92 BMW CD73 stereo / radio / head units, that the central display has missing lines and columns, missing and fading pixels all around the LCD display.
This is a very common failure at BMW Bavaria radio units, that the display has missing lines and columns, missing and fading pixels all around the LCD display.
Why do the BMW speedometer LCD displays fail with pixel failure? DIY Pixel repair helps with pixel failure? Well the BMW speedo manufacturers have a few minurtes only to produce a complete BMW speedo with LCD dispay and silver. Because of this, VDO Instrument Cluster manufacturer decied to assemble the BMW LCD display and the silver ribbon cable with heat bonding procedure. This BMW speedometer assembly design makes the contacts of the LCD display and the ribbon cable loose contact very fast, most cases in just a few years. This means, the BMW LCD display show pixel failures, it needs pixel repair, but both the silver ribbon cable and the BMW LCD display work well - only the connection of them is bad, tha is why you have LCD display pixel problems, and you need a pixel fix by a professional, or done DIY with an LCD display pixel repair KIT - a silver cable. How can we improve the quality of the LCD displays and the ribbon cables? Well if you assemble the LCD with the ribbon cable with pressure, no heat bonding, then the pixels of the BMW LCD display will work for an unlimited time. Dashboard LCD displays work on high temperature, so it is the best to avoid using the heat bonding procedure. Pixel repair DIY, or pixel fix by a professional?
The LCD display repair ribbon cable KIT is available in silver cable version. Once the BMW dashboard instrument cluster LCD display pixel failure was properly repaired, the BMW speedometer display will work as new, the silver ribbon cable and the LCD will work for good in the speedometer.
- If the bulbs are out behind the display, then all the rows and colunms do work on the BMW speedometer LCD display, but the background light of the LCD display is uneven, or some cases the BMW LCD display is completely dark. This case no need to repair the pixels, you do not need a silver or carbon ribbon cable, nor a new LCD display. This case you just need to buy the lightbulbs that provide light behind the BMW LCD display.
- If the BMW speedometer LCD display has really pixel problems, then typically lines or colunms of the display are missing. Several cases the characters are broken, numbers and letters shown on the speedometer display are unreadable - tha backlight is even. In case of a real pixel problem, when one or more pixels are missing from the display, you need to buy a silver ribbon cable, a carbon ribbon cable, or some cases a complete BMW LCD display. It really depends on that if it is a BMW, a Mercedes, and Audi, Saab or other make, and of course if it a MID display, a speedometer, a board computer or other LCD dipslay. Most cases, when you have a pixel failure, and you decide to repair it, it"s really worth to buy a set of bulbs too, as bulbs tend to go out during repair - this is due to the massive mechanical shocks experienced during the pixel repair procedure.
Well, most of the BMW pixel repair KITs we sell are designed to be simple and easy to use. The word easy should now be the subject of further discussion. An average BMW speedometer LCD display pixel repair is far more difficult then replacing a lightbulb. You definitely have to have good mechnical skills, and some household tools, such as nippers, screewdrivers, household tape, and other goodies to fix things around the house.
If you have to ask one of these questions, then you definitly should NOT do a BMW speedometer LCD display pixel repair at home (we were asked these questions before, this is not a joke):
Well, Pixelfix is an internationally registered trademark. Pixelfix only sells the highest quality BMW speedometer silver ribbon cables, that are capable of lifetime operation. We sell most of our repairs with lifetime warranty, and you will find the exact same displays, cables, and other spare parts that we use for professional repairs. The silver ribbon cables we use for BMW E38 E39 M5 X5 LCD display pixel repair are real silver, which is a very expensive base material, that is why the price is much higher compared to carbon ribbon cables.
You may keep an eye on your package, if you ordered the BMW LCD dispaly with postal delivery on you may check the status on your local post office"s website, or if you ordered next day deliver then you need to see TNT / FedEx or DHL tracking site for status.
All BMW LCD displays, ribbon cables, BMW speedometer spare parts bought in the webshop will come with an invoice. All invoices are issued electronically, so you will receive an e-mail with the printable invoice in it. This invoce can be printed and filed to the accounts.

No worries, this symptom can be due to a bagatel problem which is easy to fix. If there are no pixels on the BMW instrument cluster"s display at all, that MUST be due to one of the followings:
Let"s talk about the worst case scenario, you started the repair, but you do not seem to deal with the repair of the BMW instrument cluster"s display. This case we have a backup solution. We always stand behind our customers, so you may send the BMW speedometer LCD display unit to us for repair, and no matter what the condition of the unit is, we can help. The repair does not cost a fortune, in a lucky case it is 20-30 Euro plus return delivery cost only.
Just replaced my navigation LCD screen with one from Ebay for $130 shipped (seller was in Minnesota). I had a constant yellow hue and one spot of dead pixels.
My original screen was a 51U. I cannot tell a difference externally from the two LCDs. For some reason they cover up the "SHARP Made in Japan" stamping with stickers that say "Made in China".
No dead pixels on the new LCD, but my image was shifted off about 1 cm to the right. Bummer. Had to disassemble the whole thing and then reassemble with the LCD hanging by the ribbon cable so I could adjust the H-POS potentiometer on the back-side. I also noticed some ghosting, but adjusting the VCO potentiometer solved that issue.
- Place the LCD and electronics into the front plastic frame (has the buttons) first, then tuck in the 2-wire cable for the front light sensor, and lastly press the rear plastic frame on
I ordered a replacement screen from China on eBay. I followed this write-up to disassemble the screen unit from the car, then disassembled the electronics from the screen (no biggie) plugged the FRESH new screen into the circuit board, replaced the metal protector and connected it back to the plastics, reinstalled it into the car, and voila, totally fresh new screen. Total time. 20 minutes to remove from car and check to make sure it was part number LQ088K9LA02, 2 weeks wait to receive the part from China. Then about 1 hour to remove and replace the screen. Perfect replacement, perfect fit, really pretty easy job.
The electric car with a futuristic look and cutting edge technology. Older model i3 EVs now being offered in the used market represent an excellent value and can often be found for less than 50% of the original MSRP. Prospective purchasers are offered many options and upgrades from which to choose, including two nav screen sizes: a lackluster standard 6.6″ central information display or the upgraded 10.25″ display. Unfortunately, the standard 6.6″ display significantly diminishes driver enjoyment of the BMW iDrive system and is woefully unsuitable for Apple Carplay.
Yes. You can upgrade your 2013 to 2017 BMW i3 6.6″ nav screen to the larger 10.25″ display for approximately $400 in just 15 minutes. It is VERY easy to do yourself and the required post-install coding can be accomplished from your iPhone with a readily available bluetooth adapter. Interested? Read on …
An original 2013 to 2017 OEM enhanced 10.25″ display can be purchased from any BMW dealer and has a MSRP of $3,350. This display is manufactured in China by Chimei Innolux and has the BMW logo on the back. DO NO BUY THIS DISPLAY FROM BMW, IT IS TOO EXPENSIVE!
The exact same display can be purchased on aliexpress.com from several different distributors for approximately $400 (prices change daily) by searching “Chimei Innolux 65509306743” or by clicking the link above. *UPDATE – As of May 1, 2021, the price of this replacement screen has skyrocketed to more than $750. This is an actual BMW OEM display. However, it is gray market and can’t be sold as “BMW” so the distributors put their inspection label over the BMW logo on the back as can been seen in the picture above.
! NOTE REGARDING 2018 AND LATER i3 MODELS !– This display will not work in 2018 and later BMWs. Apparently, in 2018, they switched suppliers from the Chinese company Chimei Innolux to Kyocera, a Japanese company, and modders have discovered that these older displays will not work in newer vehicles or vice versa. Also, Japan has much stricter controls on their tech IP so gray market 10.25″ upgrade screens made by Kyocera for the 2018 and later BMW i3 are almost impossible to find.
Once you have replaced the smaller 6.6″ display with the larger 10.25″ display, you will need to recode your BMW i3 to output a compatible video signal for the new larger and higher resolution nav screen. This can easily be accomplished with anOn-Board Diagnostics Scanner that you temporarily plug in under the dash and access via bluetooth with your mobile phone. We prefer the Veepeak OBDCheck BLE+ Bluetooth 4.0 OBD2 Scanner because it works well with the required BimmerCode app.
Recoding your BMW to output the correct video signal for your upgraded 10.25″ display can be extremely complicated or extremely easy … we like easy. Therefore, we prefer using BimmerCode for iOS or Android. This app truly is the holy grail for BMW modding.
Remove the two cover plugs from the top of your old 6.6″ display using tweezers or a very small flat-head screwdriver. If you damage the edge of the cover during removal, replacement covers can be ordered directly from your BMW dealer for about $3 each.
To install the new display, simply reverse the process: 1) connect the display cable to your new 10.25″ display, 2) slide your new display straight down onto the display mounting bracket making sure not to pinch the display cable, 3) install two T4 Torx screws to secure your new display to the display mounting bracket, and 4) reattach the two cover plugs. After your new display is physically installed, you need to recode your BMW i3 to recognize the new larger screen and its higher resolution.
Coding your BMW i3 to work with your upgraded nav screen can be easily accomplished using a Veepeak OBD2 bluetooth scanner and BimmerCode for iOS or Android. Here is how to do it …
Exit back to the main menu, hit [CODE] and that’s it! The app will reboot the BMW i3’s computer and your new gorgeous 10.25″ display should start right up.
Upgrading your BMW i3’s nav screen from the smaller and lower resolution 6.6″ display to the larger and higher resolution 10.25″ display is simple, only takes about 15 minutes, and costs about $400. From reading the BMW forums, it seems like most modders’ reservations about the procedure come from 1) buying the larger screen from China and 2) coding the i3 to recognize the new screen. As we have shown, it takes only about one week to receive a new OEM screen from China and the coding is no more difficult than changing a setting on your phone. If you upgrade your nav screen using these instructions, or if you have any questions before proceeding with the retrofit, please let us know in the comments section below. Good luck!
My display started exhibiting major problems on December 22nd after being fine 2 days prior. After looking at options and verifying the part number I had, I was able to find that you can order the same Sharp LCD panel for a fraction of the cost of a new "used" replacement CID assembly. This replacement cost me $88 USD for parts plus $46 shipping from China. I ended up with an awesome upgrade because my previous screen was scratched and the anti-glare coating was failing in places.
General steps, note this is for an Alpine AL2566 display with the 1 central purple cable connection, it"s possible the same screen is used for other units - This was for a 2017 X3 with apple Carplay capability (NBT EVO iirc)
5) Disconnect the small and large ribbon cables connecting the LCD panel to the circuit board that has the connection by lifting up the locking black flaps
7) Connect the new LCD panel to the circuit board through the small and large ribbon cables. Make sure the ribbon cables are fully seated and the tabs on the cables match up with the indentations on the connectors before locking the cables in place.
For most of us in Greece ordering a BMW navi system would increase ridiculously the price of the X1 due to the absurd Greek tax system. The initial solution of the local BMW affiliate was to retrofit a BMW integrated navi (aftermarket but BMW endorsed) for 690 euros and free map upgrades for 2 years. This retrofit used he existing 6,5 screen.
All in all the android screen upgrade is worth the money even if you already own a BMW navi pack, since you benefit from the larger screen that enhances the looks of the car, an android tablet and touch screen as well as alternative navi software with live traffic and frequent map updates.
Personally I paid 480 euros for one of the first android 4.4.4. units but I can use google maps, waze, sygic as well as other software on a big hefty 10,25 screen and got a rear camera too!
