The Barracuda PanelMount Solar/NVIS 901D 15.0/17.0 represent the pinnacle of value-add engineering and performance found in a military-grade monitor. The rugged alumimum enclosure, connectors and keypad are fully sealed (IP67 compliant) to faciliate use in hostile environments.
As an advanced avionic monitor, it is equipped with multiple optional specialized features, such as an optically bonded LCD with EMI mesh and heater, panel mount adaptor, military-grade connectors, On/Off toggle switch with finger guard, and more.
Designed to meet specific requirements and specifications for a flight simulator application, General Digital’s new 21.5" ruggedized LCD monitor boasts a 1920 x 1080 full high definition resolution, and a sunlight readable LED night vision goggle-compatible backlight. This second generation LED/NVIS backlight provides more brightness, better uniformity and less power than the original backlight, which was designed for maritime applications. Configurations include an LED/NVIS display head assembly (with optional backlight driver board), and a standalone/mountable ruggedized enclosure, as pictured here.
Optical bonding is a method in which it provides enhanced visibility and durability to LCD monitors. Between the LCD module and the cover glass or touch panel of a monitor is a tiny gap of air. In optical bonding, a layer of resin is applied to fill the gap, uniting the two together and filling the air gap. With optical bonding, it decreases parallax issues, eliminating the gap that creates the illusion that pixels shift position depending on the line of sight. Optical bonding also increases the display’s range of viewing angles and delivers more accurate touch alignment in touch-based interactive systems.
The U.S. Military Standard (MIL-STD) gives a guideline for devices that are said to be “rugged” or “ruggedized”. It was introduced to provide a series of tests to simulate how the material would hold up to environmental stress during an operational lifetime. The MIL-STD standards detail 28 different testing methods that cover everything from temperature to fungal infestation to gunfire. The eight tests used to determine if a computing device is rugged include high temperature, low temperature, rain, humidity, sand and dust, immersion, vibration, and shock.
Acnodes" military-grade rackmount monitors are ideal for aerospace, military defense, industrial applications, and harsh environments. Designed to pass MIL-STD-810 environmental testing standards, the LCD displays come with an aluminum front bezel and anti-reflective glass to protect the LCD panel. The units are encased in a heavy-duty anti-corrosion housing that mounts directly into an industrial standard 19-inch server cabinet. In addition, the monitors may come with an IP65 rated front bezel, AR (anti-resistance) glass, and fanless passive cooling design.

Touch screen interfaces integrated into electronic displays are now common in marine, military, and mobile applications. The high-ambient-light readability and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) is most efficiently achieved through enhancements to commercial-off-the-self (COTS) components in these demanding environments. However, since the face of a display needs to be transparent, electromagnetic radiations emitted by the device or surrounding environment may damage the electrical components within the unit. To address the issue, touch screens integrated into display assemblies can be configured to provide an electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding ground plane and contrast-enhancement features to prevent EMI.

Surface capacitive touchscreens are often used in large LCD panel applications such as naval navigation systems. Surface capacitive touchscreen detects only one contact point at a time, cannot be used with gloves, and does not support multi-touch capabilities.
For the military or aerospace engineer, the process of choosing the right touch technology becomes even more difficult. Not only must the touchscreen perform well in controlled settings, but also in extreme environments with unknown variables ranging from strong vibrations, changes in voltage, water, sunlight, dust, oils, and extreme temperatures. With touchscreens finding their way into MRAP vehicles, handheld navigation units, and countless other military devices and military specialized equipment, it is absolutely critical that these rugged displays perform 100 percent of the time.
So how do all branches of the military and the manufacturers of military grade vehicles and equipment choose the right touch technology? Just like any other project, it is important to first carefully evaluate the needs of your project and the environment that the touchscreen display needs to operate in. Once your key requirements have been identified, it becomes much easier to weigh the advantages and disadvantages of each technology to find the touchscreen that is right for your military application.
Excessive vibration and high temperatures are just a few of the extreme environmental conditions touch screens and monitors used in the military and aerospace industry have to contend with. A truly ruggedized and durable product cannot be avoided in critical systems and the applications that need them. As well as being sunlight readable, low reflections are critical as is a robust seal and ingress protection to protect against dust, dirt, debris, and liquids which is what the CDS rugged touchscreen monitor solutions offer which drive increased deployment in demanding mission critical military and aerospace applications.
The CDS technologies simply offer ruggedised touch screen solutions that meet the extreme operational and environmental requirements of military and aerospace applications, enabling compliance to Mil-Spec certification requirements in embedded applications.
CDS’ custom OEM touch screen monitor design and manufacturing service is popular in military applications because it offers a reliable pressure activated touch that can be operated using thick gloves. They can also be customized and add excellent electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) characteristics depending on the customer’s system requirements,. Ruggedized enclosures for extreme environments are often a must as are a range of filters and optical enhancements.
