The end of September marked a new milestone for ScioTeq.The avionics visualization specialist from Kortrijk in Belgium delivered its 5.000th TSO certified DU-875/885 avionics display to Honeywell.

ScioTeq’s TSO’d DU-875/885 is part of Honeywell’s Primus Elite platform, which has STC’s on over 13 aircraft types, such as Bombardier Global Express, Embraer Legacy L600/650, Gulfstream G IV/IV-SP/V, Falcon 900 EX&C, Do-328, Citation X,..

This platform is designed as an affordable upgrade for the previously fielded DU-870/880 CRT displays, and replaces them with a state of the art LCD solution.

The DU-885/875 guarantees a better image quality, less heat in the cockpit, a lower weight, Advanced Features, Synthetic Vision and lots of other benefits at a lower cost of operation.

The Legacy 650, the newest addition to Embraer’s growing choice of business jets, will fly with Honeywell Primus Elite avionics, a new product offering that will bring XM graphical weather capability, video display link and Jeppesen electronic charts to the cockpit, all of it accessible with a cursor-control graphical interface.

The Primus Elite system is the same package Honeywell is offering as a retrofit upgrade in a variety of business jets. That Embraer chose it for its newest business jet over the Honeywell Primus Epic system is notably smart. Primus Elite doesn’t offer nearly the degree of integration of Primus Epic, but it still packs plenty of punch for a lot less money.

The Elite system offers coupled Vnav approaches, required navigation performance (RNP) 0.3, Waas/LPV, Honeywell’s SmartRunway and SmartLanding runway awareness and advisory system (Raas), and future air navigation system (Fans) 1/A datalink communications. The high-resolution graphics rendered by the Primus Elite displays are capable eventually of supporting Honeywell’s SmartView synthetic-vision system.

Besides featuring less integration than Primus Epic, the Primus Elite system will also be more reliable. The LCD-based Primus Elite display systems can slide into the holes of CRTs in Primus 1000/2000/XP, SPZ-8400/ 8500 and some SPZ-8000 avionics systems. Primus Elite converts the existing CRT displays to more capable and longer lasting active-matrix LCDs. The LCD displays also incorporate internal computing power to allow operators to integrate technologies previously available only in newer aircraft.

“The new displays offer better reliability, enhanced safety and expanded aircraft capability such as datalink weather, charts and maps,” said Chad Cundiff, vice president of crew interface products for Honeywell. “Primus Elite requires no aircraft structural modifications, limited wiring, little downtime and no additional pilot training, saving the operator acquisition and maintenance costs.”

The baseline upgrade package includes situational awareness capabilities and safety enhancements, including electronic split screen Jeppesen charts* and enhanced graphical features capable of XM weather, the most advanced weather tool with extended range to find the best routes during flight. The new LCD displays are lightweight and twice as reliable as CRT units and allow operators to take full advantage of future technologies previously only available on new aircraft. The moving map feature is capable of overlaying XM graphical weather and video display features which support up to 8 cameras including an Enhanced Vision System (EVS).

Offered as an option with this upgrade is Honeywell SmartView™ synthetic vision system (SVS), a decision-making tool which helps crews make necessary short-term decisions while maintaining enhanced safety in all phases of flight. The SmartView™ features will become second nature for pilots and increase operational integrity when you need it the most.

Honeywell (NYSE: HON) announced today that it has completed lab, simulator, and flight testing to support the development of new avionics functionality for current production and legacy models of Gulfstream aircraft.

Simulator and flight testing will be completed this month and the final certification process will begin. Honeywell expects to receive Technical Standard Order for this new functionality in July 2009.

"These new avionics capabilities are designed to accommodate the planned features of the Next Generation Air Transportation System (NGATS) and Single European Sky ATM Research (SESAR) functionality and are easily accommodated in PlaneView cockpits based on our Primus Epic technology because of the expandability and growth we built into the system," said Rob Wilson, President, Honeywell Business Aviation. "Honeywell"s flight management systems will improve operating costs and air traffic management capabilities on business aviation aircraft, saving time and reducing emissions," Wilson said. "These updates will enable fuel savings and enhanced payload capability while reducing maintenance costs, allowing Gulfstream operators to expand their aircraft"s capabilities without incurring the complexity of a full cockpit overhaul."

RNP is a key component of the FAA"s next-generation performance-based navigation system. It utilizes global positioning and inertial reference system navigation, allowing aircraft to fly predetermined paths loaded in their flight management computers. Honeywell is also offering its Go Direct Service, which assists operators in attaining RNP SAAAR operational approval. "RNP will save Gulfstream operators both time and fuel costs during airport operations and this functionality will enhance legacy systems improving aircraft capability in the evolving air space operations," said Chad Cundiff, Vice President, Crew Interface Systems, Honeywell Aerospace. "Honeywell"s Go Direct Services offer operators a complete suite of services to help operators gain operational approval for RNP SAAAR and perform RNP SAAAR Database Validation thereby offering operators a turn-key solution for the implementation of RNP SAAAR."

The new avionics capabilities for the Gulfstream G350, G450, G500 and G550 aircraft will also include paperless terminal charts and enhanced Synthetic Vision-Primary Flight Display (SV-PFD) software. The enhanced SV-PFD will enable several new features, including the use of range rings, allowing the flight crew to naturally gauge the distance of terrain and obstacles from the aircraft and improving situational awareness. SV-PFD is based upon Honeywell"s award winning IPFD technology.

In concert with Gulfstream, Honeywell will also offer its new Flight Management System version 6.1 featuring FANS 1/A, RNP and WAAS-LPV capabilities for Gulfstream"s legacy GIV, GIV-SP, G300, G400 and GV family of aircraft. The new capabilities for the Gulfstream legacy large cabin aircraft will also include the option of new Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) DU-885 displays that provide display of XM weather and paperless charts. The new DU-885 display system incorporates a LED backlight and patented wide angle visibility technology, and will also support future growth to Synthetic Vision.

"As an industry leader, Honeywell is the only supplier capable of providing the broad suite of avionics capabilities for one of business aviation"s premier business jet manufacturers," Cundiff said. "By retrofitting our DU-885 displays, GIV and GV operators will be able to see a significant decrease in weight, an increase in reliability and life, and future growth to SV-PFD information that fuses terrain data and advanced HUD symbology, giving the flight crew unprecedented situational awareness using the most tested and reliable terrain database available."
