macbook lcd screen flickering quotation

Hi, my Macbook pro (15", Mid-2015) has an issue with the screen flickering. A week ago it started happening unprompted whilst I was using it. The problem continued and when I restarted it, it had trouble booting up and wouldn"t even transmit picture to an external monitor. Then it eventually turned on again but the flickering remained. I have tried all the normal steps like booting in recovery mode etc. and the problem persists. Then on Tuesday I took it to an apple store where the technician removed the screen, said there was lots of dust inside which could have caused the problem and that he had removed it. He also advised me that I needed a new screen, however, I highly doubt the screen was broken (if anything I would imagine it to be the connectors) and cannot afford the c. £500 fee quoted. It still flickered but then later that day, the problem had gone and it was working perfectly. However, after three days of good use, today the problem has spontaneously resumed as before. I have attached a video of the issue. It happens significantly more when I type or move the mouse. Has anyone had this issue before? Is it definitely a hardware issue? Laptop has not been dropped. Thanks in advance. https://youtu.be/qq6xsIiUyhU

Unfortunately, I have the same issue. I"ve run all the tests I can, and send it to Apple- twice. I just got it back a couple days ago (both times they told me they replaced the display) and the problem just started up again a couple minutes ago. I"ve had the computer for just under three years, and a couple months after I got it, they had to replace the logic board for an unrelated issue. Thank goodness for AppleCare, I guess, though it"s really hard to get through to the techs about this problem. I"m just so frustrated, because every time they send it back and tell me they have replaced the display. I tried hooking up the computer to an external display, and mirroring it when the screen was especially bad, but it didn"t show up on the external display, which I thought eliminated the logic board. Same with the other thing I did, which was to take screenshots when it was fuzzy. When the screen stopped being fuzzy, the screenshots were not pixelated and were perfectly clear. However, after seeing this post, I"m not sure. It"s doing the same thing with the pixels, on all applications/folders, etc. The other thing it does off and on (hasn"t started again since the second "repair") is the entire lower third of the screen will be pixeled out (for lack of a better term) and I won"t be able to see anything. So watch for this on yours, in case it"s a progressive problem. This seems to change based on what position/angle the display is at. I wish I had a solution for us here, but all I can offer is a little solidarity. Of course this problem started tonight two minutes before AppleCare closed, but I will be calling them tomorrow.

something I am wondering... I had my screen replaced about two years ago as part of an apple recall, could this be something related to that replacement? Any suggestions on the easiest way to find out?

I have exactly the same problem with my powerbook. The pattern is very similar but the flickering pixels are green. This started happening since upgrading to leopard. It"s strange because this is shown only on the computer"s screen and not on an external display that"s connected to it.

Hi, dott. The fact that your external display looks normal indicates that your Powerbook"s video processor is working properly, and the fact that your built-in display is misbehaving anyway probably indicates a problem with the cable from the video processor to the LCD panel, or with the LCD panel itself. The cable"s connection might be loose at either end, or the cable could be pinched or abraded where it passes through the display hinge. Does the display anomaly change at all when you adjust the tilt of the display? If so, the cable is almost certainly damaged inside the hinge.

Many thanks for the advice. I just opened the computer and cleaned with a dump cloth the connector that attaches the display cable to the video card and then removed and reattached the cable a few times but after rebooting I haven"t noticed any improvement with the twinkly dots. I tried several times to move the display or the computer at different angles and even shacked it a bit but that didn"t seem to affect it in any way. I also noticed that the little dots are limited at certain colors on the screen usually the darkest ones and never on the entire screen and they are more likely to appear on moving graphics (on a movie, when doing an "all windows" command with expose etc). Do you think getting a new display would definitely solve the problem?

My litle opinion: The last updates of OSX do not like "Enabled Quartz 2D Extreme" and "Disabled Beam Synchronization"; otherwise PB monitor develops "weird fuzzy flickering pixels".

Thanks! I"ll give this a try if the problem reappears but for now at least it seems I found a solution, just by tapping the back of the screen. I know it might sound silly but it"s true it worked! I did this after having a look at a powerbook disassembly manual in order to target the cable and connections that are located inside the display. I had to do this about 12-15 times in a two hour period and noticed results almost immediately until gradually all the dots disappeared. I"ve been using this computer for more than 8 hours now and moved it around to see if the dots come back and up to this point everything works flawlessly and I haven"t seen a single dot on my screen. If something changes I"ll let you know though. If not it will just mean it all went well. So if anyone has a similar problem you might want to give this a try. Just be very careful not to use too much force on the display and preferably place the computer on a soft surface like a pillow to absorb the vibrations and of course make sure you do this on the exterior and not on the lcd side. Good luck!

ps. while doing this I also managed to get rid of a shadow that was about the size of a fingerprint right in the middle of the screen! couldn"t be happier right now! really hope that works out for other people too
