When we talk about resin 3D printing—or vat photopolymerization—we are referring to any 3D printing process that uses a liquid resin as its build material and a light source to solidify the liquid resin. As we’ll see, there are different variations on resin 3D printing (i.e. SLA, DLP, LCD), but generally speaking resin printing technologies are incredibly versatile and are used for many types of applications that require a high resolution and fine details. Hobbyists and gamers use resin printing technology to create highly detailed miniatures; jewelry designers use it to create prototypes and patterns for casting; dental labs use it to create patient-specific models and molds; and more.
Stereolithography, also known as SLA, is one of the most widely used 3D printing techniques today. It is also one of the oldest: the first SLA 3D printer was invented in the 1980s by 3D Systems founder Charles Hull. In the SLA 3D printing process, a UV laser “draws” a cross section of a part on a thin layer of liquid photopolymer resin. When the resin is exposed to the UV laser light it is cured and solidifies. Usually the source is an array of ultraviolet LED modules. There are resin printers that would not be called LCD printers, as they use computer display projectors to generate both the image and the UV to cure the resin.
The light source that answers your question is visible in the third picture. As noted, the LCD panel blocks the light based on the image to be cured. I think the "uses its own light" is somewhat misleading, unless the builder has found a high-UV output LED LCD panel or is using daylight resins and has configured for long burn-in times.

If you’re looking for a resin 3D printer there are a few things you will need to consider. If you are coming from traditional FDM printing not much of the knowledge base is transferable to the world of resin 3D printing. Let’s start with the types of resin 3D printers.
SLA 3D printing utilizes two motors known as galvanometers. These motors work as the X and Y axes to rapidly angle two mirrors that direct a laser beam. The laser traces the print much like a traditional FDM printer and hardens the resin where it is traced.

There are many types and brands of resins available. Typically, the machines cure resin at a 405nm wavelength so any resins that cure in that range will work. Technically, any resin in that range will work for both SLA and LCD printers but there are specific resins made for each.
