LG Display, the world’s second-biggest maker of liquid crystal display (LCD) panels, has sought alliances with Asian TV makers to strengthen its client base and reduce costs.

The LG-Amtran joint venture will be set up in Amtran’s existing production base in Suzhou, China, with initial funding of $20 million. LG Display will own 51 percent of the new company and Amtran, maker of Vizio brand LCD TVs, will hold the remaining 49 percent.

The joint venture will produce 3 million LCD modules and 5 million LCD TV sets a year, with operations set to start early next year, LG said. It did not disclose the value of any additional investments to be made.

Leading LCD makers, including No. 1 Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, LG Display and third-ranked AU Optronics Corpface a slowing global economy that has hit demand for new flat-screen TVs and personal computers.

Its affiliate LG Display Co Ltd is the only panel maker that can mass produce OLED TV panels, and both companies are the biggest proponents of the technology for the TV market. The LG companies say OLED offers better picture quality and consumes less power than mainstream liquid crystal displays (LCD).

OLED TVs, however, remain more expensive than LCD televisions. The recent industry-wide adoption of quantum dot technology, which has many of the advantages of OLED but costs less, could also undercut OLED TV sales.

In the second half of 2020 and going into 2021, the electronics market has seen a shortage of components which has resulted in longer lead times and increased pricing.  CDS understand that this is affecting the Mitsubishi Last Time Buy and potentially causing sever delivery concerns going forward for the Mitsubishi supply.

Over the last 6 months CDS have worked with our Taiwanese factory to engineer drop-in replacements for the more popular products within the Mitsubishi range.  We believe that they are competitively priced and on a quicker lead time.  The alternative will have the same or better specification (brightness or viewing angles) and are designed to be electrically / mechanically drop in compatible.  If you are using Mitsubishi, we would propose you see if it is on the list and talk to us.  There are other supplier proposing alternatives, but often these are ‘near’ alternatives and will need the customer to undertake some re-engineering.  With CDS we say that near is not close enough and our aim is to reduce as much pain as possible in the re-approval process.
