It’s difficult to buy a computer monitor, graphics card, or laptop without seeing AMD FreeSync and Nvidia G-Sync branding. Both promise smoother, better gaming, and in some cases both appear on the same display. But what do G-Sync and FreeSync do, exactly – and which is better?

Most AMD FreeSync displays can sync with Nvidia graphics hardware, and most G-Sync Compatible displays can sync with AMD graphics hardware. This is unofficial, however.

The first problem is screen tearing. A display without adaptive sync will refresh at its set refresh rate (usually 60Hz, or 60 refreshes per second) no matter what. If the refresh happens to land between two frames, well, tough luck – you’ll see a bit of both. This is screen tearing.

Screen tearing is ugly and easy to notice, especially in 3D games. To fix it, games started to use a technique called V-Syncthat locks the framerate of a game to the refresh rate of a display. This fixes screen tearing but also caps the performance of a game. It can also cause uneven frame pacing in some situations.

Adaptive sync is a better solution. A display with adaptive sync can change its refresh rate in response to how fast your graphics card is pumping out frames. If your GPU sends over 43 frames per second, your monitor displays those 43 frames, rather than forcing 60 refreshes per second. Adaptive sync stops screen tearing by preventing the display from refreshing with partial information from multiple frames but, unlike with V-Sync, each frame is shown immediately.

Enthusiasts can offer countless arguments over the advantages of AMD FreeSync and Nvidia G-Sync. However, for most people, AMD FreeSync and Nvidia G-Sync both work well and offer a similar experience. In fact, the two standards are far more similar than different.

All variants of AMD FreeSync are built on the VESA Adaptive Sync standard. The same is true of Nvidia’s G-Sync Compatible, which is by far the most common version of G-Sync available today.

VESA Adaptive Sync is an open standard that any company can use to enable adaptive sync between a device and display. It’s used not only by AMD FreeSync and Nvidia G-Sync Compatible monitors but also other displays, such as HDTVs, that support Adaptive Sync.

AMD FreeSync and Nvidia G-Sync Compatible are so similar, in fact, they’re often cross compatible. A large majority of displays I test with support for either AMD FreeSync or Nvidia G-Sync Compatible will work with graphics hardware from the opposite brand.

AMD FreeSync and Nvidia G-Sync Compatible are built on the same open standard. Which leads to an obvious question: if that’s true, what’s the difference?

Nvidia G-Sync Compatible, the most common version of G-Sync today, is based on the VESA Adaptive Sync standard. But Nvidia G-Sync and G-Sync Ultimate, the less common and more premium versions of G-Sync, use proprietary hardware in the display.

This is how all G-Sync displays worked when Nvidia brought the technology to market in 2013. Unlike Nvidia G-Sync Compatible monitors, which often (unofficially) works with AMD Radeon GPUs, G-Sync is unique and proprietary. It only supports adaptive sync with Nvidia graphics hardware.

It’s usually possible to switch sides if you own an AMD FreeSync or Nvidia G-Sync Compatible display. If you buy a G-Sync or G-Sync Ultimate display, however, you’ll have to stick with Nvidia GeForce GPUs. (Here’s our guide to the best graphics cards for PC gaming.)

This loyalty does net some perks. The most important is G-Sync’s support for a wider range of refresh rates. The VESA Adaptive Sync specification has a minimum required refresh rate (usually 48Hz, but sometimes 40Hz). A refresh rate below that can cause dropouts in Adaptive Sync, which may let screen tearing to sneak back in or, in a worst-case scenario, cause the display to flicker.

G-Sync and G-Sync Ultimate support the entire refresh range of a panel – even as low as 1Hz. This is important if you play games that may hit lower frame rates, since Adaptive Sync matches the display refresh rate with the output frame rate.

For example, if you’re playing Cyberpunk 2077 at an average of 30 FPS on a 4K display, that implies a refresh rate of 30Hz – which falls outside the range VESA Adaptive Sync supports. AMD FreeSync and Nvidia G-Sync Compatible may struggle with that, but Nvidia G-Sync and G-Sync Ultimate won’t have a problem.

AMD FreeSync Premium and FreeSync Premium Pro have their own technique of dealing with this situation called Low Framerate Compensation. It repeats frames to double the output such that it falls within a display’s supported refresh rate.

Other differences boil down to certification and testing. AMD and Nvidia have their own certification programs that displays must pass to claim official compatibility. This is why not all VESA Adaptive Sync displays claim support for AMD FreeSync and Nvidia G-Sync Compatible.

AMD FreeSync and Nvidia G-Sync include mention of HDR in their marketing. AMD FreeSync Premium Pro promises “HDR capabilities and game support.” Nvidia G-Sync Ultimate boasts of “lifelike HDR.”

This is a bunch of nonsense. Neither has anything to do with HDR, though it can be helpful to understand that some level of HDR support is included in those panels. The most common HDR standard, HDR10, is an open standard from the Consumer Technology Association. AMD and Nvidia have no control over it. You don’t need FreeSync or G-Sync to view HDR, either, even on each company’s graphics hardware.

PC gamers interested in HDRshould instead look for VESA’s DisplayHDR certification, which provides a more meaningful gauge of a monitor’s HDR capabilities.

Both standards are plug-and-play with officially compatible displays. Your desktop’s video card will detect that the display is certified and turn on AMD FreeSync or Nvidia G-Sync automatically. You may need to activate the respective adaptive sync technology in your monitor settings, however, though that step is a rarity in modern displays.

Displays that support VESA Adaptive Sync, but are not officially supported by your video card, require you dig into AMD or Nvidia’s driver software and turn on the feature manually. This is a painless process, however – just check the box and save your settings.

AMD FreeSync and Nvidia G-Sync are also available for use with laptop displays. Unsurprisingly, laptops that have a compatible display will be configured to use AMD FreeSync or Nvidia G-Sync from the factory.

A note of caution, however: not all laptops with AMD or Nvidia graphics hardware have a display with Adaptive Sync support. Even some gaming laptops lack this feature. Pay close attention to the specifications.

VESA’s Adaptive Sync is on its way to being the common adaptive sync standard used by the entire display industry. Though not perfect, it’s good enough for most situations, and display companies don’t have to fool around with AMD or Nvidia to support it.

That leaves AMD FreeSync and Nvidia G-Sync searching for a purpose. AMD FreeSync and Nvidia G-Sync Compatible are essentially certification programs that monitor companies can use to slap another badge on a product, though they also ensure out-of-the-box compatibility with supported graphics card. Nvidia’s G-Sync and G-Sync Ultimate are technically superior, but require proprietary Nvidia hardware that adds to a display’s price. This is why G-Sync and G-Sync Ultimate monitors are becoming less common.

My prediction is this: AMD FreeSync and Nvidia G-Sync will slowly, quietly fade away. AMD and Nvidia will speak of them less and lesswhile displays move towards VESA Adaptive Sync badgesinstead of AMD and Nvidia logos.

If that happens, it would be good news for the PC. VESA Adaptive Sync has already united AMD FreeSync and Nvidia G-Sync Compatible displays. Eventually, display manufacturers will opt out of AMD and Nvidia branding entirely – leaving VESA Adaptive Sync as the single, open standard. We’ll see how it goes.

When buying a gaming monitor, it’s important to compare G-Sync vs FreeSync. Both technologies improve monitor performance by matching the performance of the screen with the graphics card. And there are clear advantages and disadvantages of each: G-Sync offers premium performance at a higher price while FreeSync is prone to certain screen artifacts like ghosting.

In the past, monitor manufacturers relied on the V-Sync standard to ensure consumers and business professionals could use their displays without issues when connected to high-performance computers. As technology became faster, however, new standards were developed — the two main ones being G-Sync and Freesync.

V-Sync, short for vertical synchronization, is a display technology that was originally designed to help monitor manufacturers prevent screen tearing. This occurs when two different “screens” crash into each other because the monitor’s refresh rate can’t keep pace with the data being sent from the graphics card. The distortion is easy to spot as it causes a cut or misalignment to appear in the image.

This often comes in handy in gaming. For example, GamingScan reports that the average computer game operates at 60 FPS. Many high-end games operate at 120 FPS or greater, which requires the monitor to have a refresh rate of 120Hz to 165Hz. If the game is run on a monitor with a refresh rate that’s less than 120Hz, performance issues arise.

V-Sync eliminates these issues by imposing a strict cap on the frames per second (FPS) reached by an application. In essence, graphics cards could recognize the refresh rates of the monitor(s) used by a device and then adjust image processing speeds based on that information.

Although V-Sync technology is commonly used when users are playing modern video games, it also works well with legacy games. The reason for this is that V-Sync slows down the frame rate output from the graphics cards to match the legacy standards.

Despite its effectiveness at eliminating screen tearing, it often causes issues such as screen “stuttering” and input lag. The former is a scenario where the time between frames varies noticeably, leading to choppiness in image appearances.

V-Sync only is useful when the graphics card outputs video at a high FPS rate, and the display only supports a 60Hz refresh rate (which is common in legacy equipment and non-gaming displays). V-Sync enables the display to limit the output of the graphics card, to ensure both devices are operating in sync.

Although the technology works well with low-end devices, V-Sync degrades the performance of high-end graphics cards. That’s the reason display manufacturers have begun releasing gaming monitors with refresh rates of 144Hz, 165Hz, and even 240Hz.

While V-Sync worked well with legacy monitors, it often prevents modern graphics cards from operating at peak performance. For example, gaming monitors often have a refresh rate of at least 100Hz. If the graphics card outputs content at low speeds (e.g. 60Hz), V-Sync would prevent the graphics card from operating at peak performance.

Since the creation of V-Sync, other technologies such as G-Sync and FreeSync have emerged to not only fix display performance issues, but also to enhance image elements such as screen resolution, image colors, or brightness levels.

Released to the public in 2013, G-Sync is a technology developed by NVIDIA that synchronizes a user’s display to a device’s graphics card output, leading to smoother performance, especially with gaming. G-Sync has gained popularity in the electronics space because monitor refresh rates are always better than the GPU’s ability to output data. This results in significant performance issues.

For example, if a graphics card is pushing 50 frames per second (FPS), the display would then switch its refresh rate to 50 Hz. If the FPS count decreases to 40, then the display adjusts to 40 Hz. The typical effective range of G-Sync technology is 30 Hz up to the maximum refresh rate of the display.

The most notable benefit of G-Sync technology is the elimination of screen tearing and other common display issues associated with V-Sync equipment. G-Sync equipment does this by manipulating the monitor’s vertical blanking interval (VBI).

VBI represents the interval between the time when a monitor finishes drawing a current frame and moves onto the next one. When G-Sync is enabled, the graphics card recognizes the gap, and holds off on sending more information, therefore preventing frame issues.

To keep pace with changes in technology, NVIDIA developed a newer version of G-Sync, called G-Sync Ultimate. This new standard is a more advanced version of G-Sync. The core features that set it apart from G-Sync equipment are the built-in R3 module, high dynamic range (HDR) support, and the ability to display 4K quality images at 144Hz.

Although G-Sync delivers exceptional performance across the board, its primary disadvantage is the price. To take full advantage of native G-Sync technologies, users need to purchase a G-Sync-equipped monitor and graphics card. This two-part equipment requirement limited the number of G-Sync devices consumers could choose from It’s also worth noting that these monitors require the graphics card to support DisplayPort connectivity.

While native G-Sync equipment will likely carry a premium, for the time being, budget-conscious businesses and consumers still can use G-Sync Compatible equipment for an upgraded viewing experience.

Released in 2015, FreeSync is a standard developed by AMD that, similar to G-Sync, is an adaptive synchronization technology for liquid-crystal displays. It’s intended to reduce screen tearing and stuttering triggered by the monitor not being in sync with the content frame rate.

Since this technology uses the Adaptive Sync standard built into the DisplayPort 1.2a standard, any monitor equipped with this input can be compatible with FreeSync technology. With that in mind, FreeSync is not compatible with legacy connections such as VGA and DVI.

The “free” in FreeSync comes from the standard being open, meaning other manufacturers are able to incorporate it into their equipment without paying royalties to AMD. This means many FreeSync devices on the market cost less than similar G-Sync-equipped devices.

As FreeSync is a standard developed by AMD, most of their modern graphics processing units support the technology. A variety of other electronics manufacturers also support the technology, and with the right knowledge, you can even get FreeSync to work on NVIDIA equipment.

Although FreeSync is a significant improvement over the V-Sync standard, it isn’t a perfect technology. The most notable drawback of FreeSync is ghosting. This is when an object leaves behind a bit of its previous image position, causing a shadow-like image to appear.

The primary cause of ghosting in FreeSync devices is imprecise power management. If enough power isn’t applied to the pixels, images show gaps due to slow movement. On the other hand when too much power is applied, then ghosting occurs.

To overcome those limitations, in 2017 AMD released an enhanced version of FreeSync known as FreeSync 2 HDR. Monitors that meet this standard are required to have HDR support; low framerate compensation capabilities (LFC); and the ability to toggle between standard definition range (SDR) and high dynamic range (HDR) support.

A key difference between FreeSync and FreeSync 2 devices is that with the latter technology, if the frame rate falls below the supported range of the monitor, low framerate compensation (LFC) is automatically enabled to prevent stuttering and tearing.

As FreeSync is an open standard – and has been that way since day one – people shopping for FreeSync monitors have a wider selection than those looking for native G-Sync displays.

If performance and image quality are your top priority when choosing a monitor, then G-Sync and FreeSync equipment come in a variety of offerings to fit virtually any need. The primary difference between the two standards is levels of input lag or tearing.

If you want low input lag and don’t mind tearing, then the FreeSync standard is a good fit for you. On the other hand, if you’re looking for smooth motions without tearing, and are okay with minor input lag, then G-Sync equipped monitors are a better choice.

For the average individual or business professional, G-Sync and FreeSync both deliver exceptional quality. If cost isn’t a concern and you absolutely need top of the line graphics support, then G-Sync is the overall winner.

If you want smooth gameplay without screen tearing and you want to experience the high frame rates that your Nvidia graphics card is capable of, Nvidia’s G-Sync adaptive sync tech, which unleashes your card’s best performance, is a feature that you’ll want in your next monitor.

To get this feature, you can spend a lot on a monitor with G-Sync built in, like the high-end $1,999 Acer Predator X27, or you can spend less on a FreeSync monitor that has G-Sync compatibility by way of a software update. (As of this writing, there are 15 monitors that support the upgrade.)

However, there are still hundreds of FreeSync models that will likely never get the feature. According to Nvidia, “not all monitors go through a formal certification process, display panel quality varies, and there may be other issues that prevent gamers from receiving a noticeably improved experience.”

But even if you have an unsupported monitor, it may be possible to turn on G-Sync. You may even have a good experience — at first. I tested G-Sync with two unsupported models, and, unfortunately, the results just weren’t consistent enough to recommend over a supported monitor.

The 32-inch AOC CQ32G1 curved gaming monitor, for example, which is priced at $399, presented no issues when I played Apex Legends and Metro: Exodus— at first. Then some flickering started appearing during gameplay, though I hadn’t made any changes to the visual settings. I also tested it with Yakuza 0,which, surprisingly, served up the worst performance, even though it’s the least demanding title that I tested. Whether it was in full-screen or windowed mode, the frame rate was choppy.

Another unsupported monitor, the $550 Asus MG279Q, handled both Metro: Exodus and Forza Horizon 4 without any noticeable issues. (It’s easy to confuse the MG279Q for the Asus MG278Q, which is on Nvidia’s list of supported FreeSync models.) In Nvidia’s G-Sync benchmark, there was significant tearing early on, but, oddly, I couldn’t re-create it.

Before you begin, note that in order to achieve the highest frame rates with or without G-Sync turned on, you’ll need to use a DisplayPort cable. If you’re using a FreeSync monitor, chances are good that it came with one. But if not, they aren’t too expensive.

First, download and install the latest driver for your GPU, either from Nvidia’s website or through the GeForce Experience, Nvidia’s Windows 10 app that can tweak graphics settings on a per-game basis. All of Nvidia’s drivers since mid-January 2019 have included G-Sync support for select FreeSync monitors. Even if you don’t own a supported monitor, you’ll probably be able to toggle G-Sync on once you install the latest driver. Whether it will work well after you do turn the feature on is another question.

Once the driver is installed, open the Nvidia Control Panel. On the side column, you’ll see a new entry: Set up G-Sync. (If you don’t see this setting, switch on FreeSync using your monitor’s on-screen display. If you still don’t see it, you may be out of luck.)

Check the box that says “Enable G-Sync Compatible,” then click “Apply: to activate the settings. (The settings page will inform you that your monitor is not validated by Nvidia for G-Sync. Since you already know that is the case, don’t worry about it.)

Check that the resolution and refresh rate are set to their max by selecting “Change resolution” on the side column. Adjust the resolution and refresh rate to the highest-possible option (the latter of which is hopefully at least 144Hz if you’ve spent hundreds on your gaming monitor).

Nvidia offers a downloadable G-Sync benchmark, which should quickly let you know if things are working as intended. If G-Sync is active, the animation shouldn’t exhibit any tearing or stuttering. But since you’re using an unsupported monitor, don’t be surprised if you see some iffy results. Next, try out some of your favorite games. If something is wrong, you’ll realize it pretty quickly.

There’s a good resource to check out on Reddit, where its PC community has created a huge list of unsupported FreeSync monitors, documenting each monitor’s pros and cons with G-Sync switched on. These real-world findings are insightful, but what you experience will vary depending on your PC configuration and the games that you play.

For the past few years, the best gaming monitors(opens in new tab) have enjoyed something of a renaissance. Before Adaptive-Sync technology appeared in the form of Nvidia G-Sync(opens in new tab) and AMD FreeSync(opens in new tab), the only thing performance-seeking gamers could hope for was higher resolutions or a refresh rate above 60 Hz. Today, not only do we have monitors routinely operating at 144 Hz and higher, Nvidia and AMD have both been updating their respective technologies. In this age of gaming displays, which Adaptive-Sync tech reigns supreme in the battle between FreeSync vs. G-Sync?

We"ve also got next-generation graphics cards arriving, like the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090 and Ada Lovelace GPUs with DLSS 3 technology that can potentially double framerates, even at 4K. AMD"s RDNA 3 and Radeon RX 7000-series GPUs are also slated to arrive shortly, and should also boost performance and make higher quality displays more useful.

For the uninitiated, Adaptive-Sync means that the monitor’s refresh cycle is synced with the rate at which the connected PC’s graphics card(opens in new tab) renders each frame of video, even if that rate changes. Games render each frame sequentially, and the rate can vary widely depending on the complexity of the scene being rendered. With a fixed monitor refresh rate, the screen updates at a specific cadence, like 60 times per second for a 60 Hz display. What happens if a new frame is ready before the scheduled update?

There are a few options. One is to have the GPU and monitor wait to send the new frame to the display, which increases system latency and can make games feel less responsive. Another option is for the GPU to send the new frame to the monitor and let it immediately start drawing it onto the screen — this is called tearing and the result is shown in the above image.

G-Sync (for Nvidia-based GPUs) and FreeSync (AMD GPUs and potentially Intel GPUs as well) aim to solve the above problems, providing maximum performance, minimal latency, and no tearing. The GPU sends a "frame ready" signal to a G-Sync or FreeSync monitor, which draws the new frame and then awaits the next "frame ready" signal, thereby eliminating any tearing artifacts.

Today, you’ll find countless monitors — even non-gaming ones — boasting some flavor of G-Sync, FreeSync, or even both. If you haven’t committed to a graphics card technology yet or have the option to use either, you might be wondering which is best when considering FreeSync vs. G-Sync. And if you have the option of using either, will one offer a greater gaming advantage than the other?

Fundamentally, G-Sync and FreeSync are the same. They both sync the monitor to the graphics card and let that component control the refresh rate on a continuously variable basis. To meet each certification, a monitor has to meet the respective requirements detailed above, but a monitor can also go beyond the requirements. For example, a FreeSync monitor isn"t required to have HDR but some do, and some FreeSync monitors reduce motion blur via a proprietary partner tech, like Asus ELMB Sync.

Can the user see a difference between the two? In our experience, there is no visual difference in FreeSync vs. G-Sync when frame rates are the same and the monitor quality is the same. Achieving such parity however is far from guaranteed.

We did a blind test in 2015 and found that when all other parameters are equal between FreeSync vs. G-Sync monitors, G-Sync had a slight edge over the still-new-at-the-time FreeSync. But a lot has happened since then. Our monitor reviews(opens in new tab)have highlighted a few things that can add or subtract from the gaming experience that have little to nothing to do with refresh rates and Adaptive-Sync technologies.

The HDRquality is also subjective at this time, although G-Sync Ultimate claims to offer "lifelike HDR." It then comes down to the feature set of the rival technologies. What does all this mean? Let’s take a look.

G-Sync monitors typically carry a price premium because they contain the extra hardware needed to support Nvidia’s version of adaptive refresh. When G-Sync was new (Nvidia introduced it in 2013), it would cost you about $200 extra to purchase the G-Sync version of a display, all other features and specs being the same. Today, the gap is closer to $100.

However, FreeSync monitors can be also certified as G-Sync Compatible. The certification can happen retroactively, and it means a monitor can run G-Sync within Nvidia"s parameters, despite lacking Nvidia" proprietary scaler hardware. A visit to Nvidia’s website reveals a list of monitors that have been certified to run G-Sync. You can technically run G-Sync on a monitor that"s not G-Sync Compatible-certified, but the quality and experience are not guaranteed. There are a few guarantees you get with G-Sync monitors that aren’t always available in their FreeSync counterparts. One is blur-reduction (ULMB) in the form of a backlight strobe. ULMB is Nvidia’s name for this feature; some FreeSync monitors also have it under a different name. While this works in place of Adaptive-Sync, some prefer it, perceiving it to have lower input lag. We haven’t been able to substantiate this in testing. However, when you run at 100 frames per second (fps) or higher, blur is typically a non-issue and input lag is super-low, so you might as well keep things tight with G-Sync engaged.

G-Sync also guarantees that you will never see a frame tear even at the lowest refresh rates. Below 30 Hz, G-Sync monitors double the frame renders (thereby doubling the refresh rate) to keep them running in the adaptive refresh range.

FreeSync has a price advantage over G-Sync because it uses an open-source standard created by VESA, Adaptive-Sync, which is also part of VESA’s DisplayPort spec.

Any DisplayPort interface version 1.2a or higher can support adaptive refresh rates. While a manufacturer may choose not to implement it, the hardware is there already, so there’s no additional production cost for the maker to implement FreeSync. Because of its open nature, FreeSync implementations vary widely between monitors. Budget displays will typically get FreeSync and a 60 Hz or greater refresh rate. The lowest-priced displays likely won’t get blur-reduction, and the lower limit of the Adaptive-Sync range might be just 48 Hz. However, there are FreeSync (as well as G-Sync) displays that operate at 30 Hz or, according to AMD, even lower.

FreeSync Adaptive-Sync works just as well as G-Sync in theory. In practice, the cheapest FreeSync displays (particularly older models) may not look quite as nice. Pricier FreeSync monitors add blur reduction and Low Framerate Compensation (LFC) to compete better against their G-Sync counterparts.

And, again, you can get G-Sync running on a FreeSync monitor without any Nvidia certification, but performance may falter. These days, monitors are opting for FreeSync support because it"s effectively free, and higher quality displays work with Nvidia to ensure they"re also G-Sync compatible.

On the Nvidia side, a monitor can support G-Sync with HDR and extended color without earning the “Ultimate” certification. Nvidia assigns that moniker to monitors with the capability to offer what Nvidia deems "lifelike HDR." Exact requirements are vague, butNvidia clarified the G-Sync Ultimate specto Tom"s Hardware, telling us that these monitors are supposed to be factory-calibrated for the HDR color space, P3, while offering 144Hz and higher refresh rates, overdrive, "optimized latency" and "best-in-class" image quality and HDR support.

So which is better: G-Sync or FreeSync? With the features being so similar there is no inherent reason to select a particular monitor. Both technologies produces similar results, so the contest is mostly a wash at this point. There are a few disclaimers, however.

If you purchase a G-Sync monitor, you will only have support for its adaptive-sync features with a GeForce graphics card. You"re effectively locked into buying Nvidia GPUs as long as you want to get the most out of your monitor. With a FreeSync monitor, particularly the newer, higher quality variants that meet the FreeSync Premium Pro certification, you"re often free to use AMD or Nvidia graphics cards.

Those shopping for a PC monitor(opens in new tab) will have to decide which additional features are most important to them. How high should the refresh rate be? How much resolution can your graphics card handle? Is high brightness important? Do you want HDR and extended color?

It’s the combination of these elements that impacts the gaming experience, not simply which adaptive sync technology is in use. Ultimately, the more you spend, the better gaming monitor you’ll get. These days, when it comes to displays, you do get what you pay for. But you don"t have pay thousands to get a good, smooth gaming experience.

I admit that sometimes, I’m a little slow to catch on to some common things. Take Vsync, for example. As much as I hate to admit it, it wasn’t until about five years ago that I realized its true usefulness. Prior to that, I couldn’t have imagined deliberately capping my framerate, but after I sucked it up and decided to test Vsync in my games, I quickly became a fan. It was at that point that I realized that 60 FPS and smoothness had more appeal than 100 FPS and tearing.

Ever since I had that Vsync epiphany, or at least up until last fall when NVIDIA announced G-SYNC, I considered its design and effect on games to be very good. But, I hadn’t put thought into its downsides; the biggest one being that your game is unlikely to be able to run in perfect sync with your display, which is to say that if you’re running a 60Hz monitor, your game would have to perform at 60 FPS 100% of the time. There’s also the side-effect of the GPU and display not working in unison to deliver the best frames.

Admittedly, it wasn’t until I saw G-SYNC in person at a press event last fall that I truly realized how lacking Vsync’s design was. It’s not that I suddenly believe Vsync is a waste of time, because it’s not. Instead, it’s that I realized how much better display sync could be. When NVIDIA’s Tom Peterson showed G-SYNC off to a room full of press, I was reassured pretty quickly by my colleagues that I wasn’t the only one genuinely impressed. NVIDIA seemed to have a winner on its hands.

As much as I’d love to splash the first-half of this article with an explanation of how G-SYNC works, being a review, I think it’d be a little more fair to first take a look at the product on hand; ASUS’ Republic of Gamers SWIFT PG278Q.

The PG278Q is a 27-inch display that in addition to including G-SYNC support offers a 2560×1440 resolution and 144Hz refresh rate. ASUS’ product page says that 144Hz will only be available in 2D mode, whereas 3D will be limited to 120Hz, but I’ve seen 144Hz work just fine in 3D. Your mileage may possibly vary.

The fact that this display includes G-SYNC is a massive clue that it’s targeting gamers, but ASUS didn’t stop there with game-related features. For the sake of getting a look at the hardware out-of-the-way first, I’ll talk about those later.

Like most of ASUS’ RoG line of products, the PG278Q looks like a gaming product. The red ring seen isn’t some PCMasterRace jab at the Xbox 360’s red ring of death; it’s just meant to look cool. In operation, this will light up, and if seeing it lit up all of the time doesn’t appeal to you, it can be toggled off inside of the display’s menu.

As great as what G-SYNC brings to the table is, it does unfortunately come with a caveat: Displays that use G-SYNC are limited to DisplayPort. This is due to the fact that G-SYNC simply requires the bandwidth and technology it offers. It really shouldn’t prove to be a limitation to anyone buying a G-SYNC display, since all current NVIDIA graphics cards are guaranteed to include at least one DisplayPort connector.

The downside with this is obvious: Some people, me included, want to use their display for more than one thing. Previous to the PG278Q, I was using a very similar ASUS display called the PB278Q. Because I have somewhat limited space, I used it for multiple things. I hooked my SHIELD portable up to it via HDMI, for starters, and I had another PC here hooked in via DVI. With the PG278Q, it’s G-SYNC / DisplayPort or bust. For a lot of people, this isn’t going to be an issue at all, but it’s definitely something worth noting, because I wouldn’t blame you if you assumed any high-end display would come with more than just a single video connector.

Fortunately, the lacking video connectors is the only real downside I could give this display, which in itself is an upside. Also in the shot above, you can see that the PG278Q is fully capable of using portrait mode (which I love to use for Pinball Arcade), and it includes dual USB 3.0 connectors.

While the PG278Q’s buttons are rarely going to be seen, they carry on with the aesthetics established by the rest of the display. Pushing the top button (which can be moved in four directions and be pressed in) brings up a great-looking menu system. While I couldn’t do it justice with a camera, I included a shot of it below anyway.

Navigating this menu is straight-forward, and all of it is controlled with the top multi-directional button. The other buttons are also straight-forward, though there’s only two that are really special. One of these is GamePlus, which enables an on-screen crosshair and / or timer; either of which can be adjusted on the screen as necessary. The crosshair is meant to aide those who need an easier-to-see crosshair on their screen, as admittedly, it’s easy to lose your in-game one sometimes in the heat of battle.

The other special button is called Turbo, and it’s used to change the refresh rate between 60Hz, 120Hz, and 144Hz. This is a feature that might not be used by many, outside of setting it to 144Hz and being done with it, but it could potentially be useful to those who are suffering compatibility issues. I encountered just such an issue with Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater HD. While the game worked fine for the most part at 120Hz+, it was prone to crashing. When I set the monitor back to 60Hz, the issue disappeared.

And there’s a look at the display from its backside. I really do believe that this is one of the coolest-looking displays on the market. It’s just too bad that this neat design will be largely hidden once the PG278Q is sitting on your desk. To help keep your cables in order, you can run them through the open slit in the pillar.

As I touched on briefly in the intro, while Vsync serves its purpose pretty well, it has a couple of flaws that can’t be worked around unless the display is able to talk directly to your PC’s graphics card. That’s of course the problem G-SYNC, or “GPU-SYNC”, fixes. With a G-SYNC module installed in a display, the graphics card – in this case, NVIDIA’s own GeForce – gets to call the shots. Rather than have the display inaccurately choose which frames to display, the GPU does instead.

Being that G-SYNC was announced over a year ago, and many of you likely already know the ins and outs of the technology, I’m going to just cover the basics here. And really, that’s all it will take to convince you that G-SYNC, and related technologies, are far superior to the Vsync we’ve been using for so long.

If you’ve ever played a game without Vsync, what I’m about to say should come as no surprise: It’s not good. Framerates might be high, but so too will be the amount of tearing and stuttering. This will be especially evident when quickly turning or moving at a really quick pace. In an FPS, for example, you could see the result simply by moving the mouse left and right; you may not even have to do it quickly. NVIDIA provides an example of what will be displayed during one frame when this tearing occurs:

That may look a little exaggerated, but remember that we’re talking about a single frame here. Even if tearing is very obvious while playing, it’s not going to look quite that bad during gameplay since you’ll be seeing dozens of frames per second.

The reason this happens is because the display isn’t sticking to a proper cadence, and frames are literally tripping over each other. That’s why Vsync can dramatically improve things: It caps the framerate to match the refresh rate. That means that if you’re using a 60Hz display, your game will display an even 60 frames per second, keeping things consistent.

If you’re running such a high-end PC that your games will never run below your display’s framerate, G-SYNC’s benefit isn’t going to be quite as easily seen. The vast majority of people don’t run PCs like that, however, and even the highest-end rigs are still likely to succumb to sub-60 FPS framerates at some point with today’s hottest games running with high detail levels.

The problem becomes more evident when you’re wanting to run a display with an even higher refresh rate. Following the same logic above, a 120Hz display would allow 120 individual frames to be shown each second – and I’m sure it’s obvious, but running today’s best-looking games at good detail without dipping below 120 FPS – even at a modest resolution – is just not going to happen. Even with a killer rig, a hiccup is bound to occur somewhere.

The above graphic does well to highlight the problem. Sometimes, a frame might be rendered before the monitor wants to show the next frame; or, a frame could take longer than expected to render, and the monitor is stuck in limbo. As the graphic suggests, this is what causes lag and stutter.

The next graphic shows a side-by-side example of how a game will behave when Vsync is either on or off. When off, the delivered FPS is all over the place, which results in the tearing, while with it on, unpredictable variance in the framerate causes the stuttering.

It might have taken a good number of paragraphs to explain the problem we’re dealing with, but it’ll take just this one to explain NVIDIA’s solution. With extra hardware installed into the monitor, by way of the G-SYNC module, the graphics card and the monitor have extremely good communication. Whenever the GPU renders a frame, it tells the G-SYNC module, and then that frame is seen by you. Because the monitor won’t display anything new until a new frame is available, there’s no tearing, no stuttering, and less lag. Also, unlike Vsync, your framerate isn’t capped; it’s like having Vsync off, but without the problems of having Vsync off.

As unfortunate as it is, it’s difficult to truly appreciate G-SYNC without seeing it in person. Even good video cameras will have a hard time accurately portraying the benefits. What you have to really envision is total smoothness. There could still be a lot of variance in the framerate, but because of the way G-SYNC delivers each one of those frames to the monitor, the result will be much more pleasing to the eye. If you’re ever at an NVIDIA-sponsored event, and G-SYNC happens to be shown-off, you’ll likely spot this demo:

Not long after NVIDIA took the veil off of G-SYNC, AMD followed-up with ‘FreeSync’, a technology that aims to do the exact same thing. As time went on, we learned that FreeSync is actually going to be part of an upcoming VESA standard, and once released, it should work with any GPU, as long as that GPU supports the feature. I’d suspect that we’ll see good examples of this in action this coming CES. It’s really hard to settle on how FreeSync will truly compare to G-SYNC until actual products hit the market.

I mentioned above that G-SYNC is hard to truly appreciate simply from reading a review, so I’ll try to do it justice here. Because I got a hands-on preview last fall, I pretty much knew what to expect from this monitor, and thankfully, it delivered. What I saw at that press event wasn’t snake oil; it was the real thing. G-SYNC does in fact smooth out games very well, and ultimately, it’s worth it as far as I’m concerned.

At this point, I’ve been using this ASUS monitor for a solid two months, and in that two months, I’ve gamed quite a bit. Well, that’s an understatement. Throughout it all, my experience has been great; even with simpler games I notice the difference. When I load a game up now, I know in advance I am going to get a smooth experience, and that counts for a lot.

What really surprised me about G-SYNC is that even in games that gave me great performance, I still noticed the difference. Defiance is a good example. I logged into this game a couple of weeks ago to do a couple of quick missions, and it just hit me – the game was running so smoothly. Then I of course clued in that G-SYNC was working its magic.

A big reason G-SYNC can make for such smooth gameplay is because you’re essentially running Vsync off, but without the issues of having Vsync off, as I touched on earlier. Your frame rate could vary from 60 to 90 in an instant, and because of the continued smoothness, it’s not going to stand out. And believe me, if you’re running this ASUS monitor at 144Hz, your frame rate is going to vary a lot. Even with a console port like Defiance, I could barely hit 120 FPS standing still while looking at the ground.

Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel (our review) is another game I thoroughly “tested” with G-SYNC, and once again, the experience is fantastic. At max resolution and equipped with a single GeForce GTX 980, the game most often runs at below 100 FPS, and again, there’s heavy variance in the framerate, but it doesn’t matter in the grand scheme.

Then there’s Portal 2, a game that’d run well on a potato. In basically any circumstance, a GTX 980 can push this game to the max refresh rate no problem, at 2560×1440. That’s evidenced in the shot below, where I peaked at 143 FPS looking up an elevator shaft – or something that looks like one.

Not all games are so friendly with high refresh rates, so it’d be wise to not expect the 144Hz or even 120Hz refresh rate to come in handy in every given scenario. Even with Vsync turned off, many games like to cap at 60 FPS; even games that have built-in benchmarks that will tell you a higher framerate than that. Ultra Street Fighter IV, for example, does just that. Its benchmark will peak at 144-ish FPS, but in gameplay, there’s a cap of 60 FPS. Then we have games like King of Fighters XIII that actually should be capped, but are not. In this particular title, running the game at 144Hz is like running it at super-speed. It’s actually pretty ridiculous that the game is designed in such a way.

ASUS’ PG278Q isn’t just the first G-SYNC monitor I’ve tested in-depth, it’s the first monitor above 60Hz I’ve tested in-depth. Throughout all of my testing, I truly couldn’t believe how many games are hard-capped at 60 FPS. It really made me come to appreciate the games that don’t hard-cap, because while 60 FPS is a great target, going higher just adds to the fluidity.

If you want proof of that, that’s where the Turbo button on this monitor comes in handy. If you’re playing a game that supports uncapped framerates, you can use this key to change from 60Hz to 120Hz to 144Hz on-the-fly. There won’t be a big differences between the latter two, of course, and that assumes that the game you’re playing and the hardware you have would be able to push it that high anyway, but there’s definitely a sizable difference between 60Hz and 120Hz – even if you only meet that 120 half-way in framerate.

After having used the PG278Q so much, I’m at the point now where I simply don’t want to have to give up G-SYNC. It’s made me hate ‘Vsync off’ even more, something that became evident with the Maxwell launch, throughout all of my benchmarking. It seems like really simple technology, and maybe it is in a way, but the difference is so good, I want it to catch on in a big way. It’s no wonder AMD was so quick to latch onto FreeSync. Would that have happened had NVIDIA not released G-SYNC? I’m not so sure. The technology would have still existed with this future VESA revision, but I’m not sure we would have paid as much attention to it.

What about the PG278Q itself? Well, I admit that at first, the TN panel was really hard to get used to, especially since I was coming from a wonderful PLS panel of the same size. The TN limitations were especially noticeable when I used portrait mode, as the sides faded a bit unless you were looking at the monitor head-on. Admittedly, though, after just a couple of weeks of use, this was a limitation of the display I didn’t even notice anymore, even though it certainly didn’t disappear. I am very confident in saying that this is one of the best TNs out there.

Another potential downside is that the monitor costs $800. That’s a bit pricey for a 27-inch, given the fact that similar displays (in size and resolution) can be had for less. But, this display not only includes G-SYNC, it also supports up to 144Hz. There’s a premium here, there’s no doubt about that, but for those goods, it’s not that hard to justify.

Overall, this is a fantastic display, and if it’s not obvious by now, I highly recommend it. That’s the upside; the downside is that finding it in stock is tough. You’ll have to become a stalker to get one, and as this monitor has been available for a couple of months, that’s disappointing. I’m hoping to hear back from either NVIDIA or ASUS soon about this availability problem, and see if we can’t get an ETA of when the situation will be remedied.

Upgrading your computer with the latest technology only enhances your experience if you are able to get the maximum value out of your top-notch gear. It is clear that an AOC FreeSync monitor can stabilise and hone picture quality coming from the PC with AMD graphic cards, but thanks to the recent technological improvements, it is now possible to transform an AOC FreeSync monitor into a G-Sync compatible display, working smoothly with GPU’s from NVIDIA as well.

The GPU is usually not able to maintain a consistent frame rate, possibly altering between high spikes and sudden drops in performance. Its frame rate depends on the scenery the GPU has to display. For example, calm scenes in which there isn’t much going on demand less performance than epic, effect-laden boss fights.

When the frame rate of your GPU does not match the frame rate of your monitor, display issues occur: lag, tearing or stuttering when the monitor has to wait for new data or tries to display two different frames as one. To prevent these issues, the GPU and monitor need to be synchronised.

A technology to ensure a stable picture quality is called FreeSync and requires an AMD graphics processor and a FreeSync monitor. NVIDIA’s G-Sync on the other hand depends on the combination of an NVIDIA graphics card and a G-Sync monitor.

With the new generations of NVIDIA graphics cards, it is possible to get the G-Sync features working on specific FreeSync AOC monitors as well. NVIDIA announced a list of certified AOC monitors which are also G-Sync compatible. Even if the AOC product is not on the list, you can still enable G-Sync on any AOC monitor and test the performance.*

Now you should have successfully enabled G-Sync on your AOC FreeSync monitor. The picture quality stays perfect and you can enjoy your gaming session without disruptive image flaws.
