LG Display, a major Korean display maker, is expected to stop producing liquid-crystal display (LCD) panels for TVs by the end of this year at the earliest, industry sources said Monday, amid falling profitability and fierce competition from Chinese rivals.
The company said in a regulatory filing last week that it was reviewing an end of production at its LCD TV panel factory in Paju, Gyeonggi, without specifying the exact date of production suspension.
The panel maker has been scaling down its loss-making LCD TV panel business, with a goal of discontinuing domestic production as early as possible. It has also said it will reduce production in China in a phased manner.
Demand was falling at an "unprecedented level" both for LCD and premium organic light-emitting diode (OLED) panels, the company said during an earnings call in October, after years of pandemic-driven strong growth for personal IT devices.
Facing mounting challenges, the company has been trying to turn its business around by putting more resources in LCD panels for IT products and high-margin OLED business and expanding its high-value make-to-order business.
Kim Yang-jae, an analyst at Daol Investment & Securities, forecast OLED panels will make up for more than 60 percent of LG Display"s revenue by 2023, up from less than 40 percent in 2021.
LG Display"s fourth-quarter operating profit is forecast to be around 515.9 billion won, according to an estimate by Yonhap Infomax, the financial news and information arm of Yonhap News Agency.

Typical LCDs are edge-lit by a strip of white LEDs. The 2D backlighting system in Pro Display XDR is unlike any other. It uses a superbright array of 576 blue LEDs that allows for unmatched light control compared with white LEDs. Twelve controllers rapidly modulate each LED so that areas of the screen can be incredibly bright while other areas are incredibly dark. All of this produces an extraordinary contrast that’s the foundation for XDR.

Companies such as Alcatel and Samsung have outsourced the manufacturing of some models of LCD television to TCL because of its strategic location to lower the production costs. To spread their brand name, TCL have partnered with many companies in the fields of sports, entertainment, music and technology. The company uses TCL Wide Color Gamut technology to deliver the purest LED backlight, which in turn helps to improve display performance and the vividness of the picture. Moreover, TCL brand TVs come equipped with built-in Chromecast that allows users to cast videos or games directly to their TVs.
Panasonic is one of the best TV brands in the world, leading the evolution of televisions from colorization and digitization to flat panels and higher resolutions. The company is focusing on the research and development of visual image processing technologies to provide end-to-end ultra HD solutions. The company has incorporated its technology and extensive knowledge of TV manufacturing into its Studio Color HCX2 Processor to deliver detailed HDR pictures in bright and dark areas in its latest 4K OLED television series.
Foldable displays are gaining ground in the smartphone market, but there is a related technology – stretchable displays – that is emerging. LG Display demonstrated a 12” panel that can be stretched to 14” and released back to 12” without damaging it.
This type of bendy, stretchy display (or “free-form” display as LG calls it) can be used in clothing and furniture as it can easily conform to complex shapes and the ability to stretch will make it more comfortable to wear (or sit on - its construction is quite durable).
LG Display foresees uses in various industries including “fashion, wearables, mobility and gaming”. It can even find a place in the automobile and aircraft industry as well.
The display is pretty high quality as far as prototype panels go – at 100ppi it has pixel density similar to that of a 40” 4K TV. And it has full-color RGB capabilities. The display is built on a special silicon substrate that is also used for contact lenses. It features micro-LEDs (smaller than 40µm) that are connected via S-shaped springs instead of straight wires so that they can stretch 20% without breaking.
We’ve seen stretchable display prototypes before – like this one from Royole from last year. It could stretch 30% and according to the company the technology can hit 120ppi, but the demo unit was a small 2.7” panel with 96 x 60px resolution. A few years ago Samsung demoed a stretchable display in 2017, though that one was mostly able to survive deformation (e.g. pressing hard down on the flexible display) rather than stretch to a new size (the 9.1” panel could stretch around half an inch).
Shopping for a new TV is like wading through a never-ending pool of tech jargon, display terminology, and head-spinning acronyms. It was one thing when 4K resolution landed in the homes of consumers, with TV brands touting the new UHD viewing spec as a major marketing grab. But over the last several years, the plot has only continued to thicken when it comes to three- and four-letter acronyms with the introduction of state-of-the-art lighting and screen technology. But between OLEDs, QLEDs, mini-LEDs, and now QD-OLEDs, there’s one battle of words that rests at the core of TV vocabulary: LED versus LCD.
Despite having a different acronym, LED TV is just a specific type of LCD TV, which uses a liquid crystal display (LCD) panel to control where light is displayed on your screen. These panels are typically composed of two sheets of polarizing material with a liquid crystal solution between them. When an electric current passes through the liquid, it causes the crystals to align, so that light can (or can’t) pass through. Think of it as a shutter, either allowing light to pass through or blocking it out.
Since both LED and LCD TVs are based around LCD technology, the question remains: what is the difference? Actually, it’s about what the difference was. Older LCD TVs used cold cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFLs) to provide lighting, whereas LED LCD TVs used an array of smaller, more efficient light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to illuminate the screen.
Since the technology is better, all LCD TVs now use LED lights and are colloquially considered LED TVs. For those interested, we’ll go deeper into backlighting below, or you can move onto the Local Dimming section.
Three basic illumination forms have been used in LCD TVs: CCFL backlighting, full-array LED backlighting, and LED edge lighting. Each of these illumination technologies is different from one another in important ways. Let’s dig into each.
CCFL backlighting is an older, now-abandoned form of display technology in which a series of cold cathode lamps sit across the inside of the TV behind the LCD. The lights illuminate the crystals fairly evenly, which means all regions of the picture will have similar brightness levels. This affects some aspects of picture quality, which we discuss in more detail below. Since CCFLs are larger than LED arrays, CCFL-based LCD TVs are thicker than LED-backlit LCD TVs.
Full-array backlighting swaps the outdated CCFLs for an array of LEDs spanning the back of the screen, comprising zones of LEDs that can be lit or dimmed in a process called local dimming. TVs using full-array LED backlighting to make up a healthy chunk of the high-end LED TV market, and with good reason — with more precise and even illumination, they can create better picture quality than CCFL LCD TVs were ever able to achieve, with better energy efficiency to boot.
Another form of LCD screen illumination is LED edge lighting. As the name implies, edge-lit TVs have LEDs along the edges of a screen. There are a few different configurations, including LEDs along just the bottom, LEDs on the top and bottom, LEDs left and right, and LEDs along all four edges. These different configurations result in picture quality differences, but the overall brightness capabilities still exceed what CCFL LCD TVs could achieve. While there are some drawbacks to edge lighting compared to full-array or direct backlight displays, the upshot is edge lighting that allows manufacturers to make thinner TVs that cost less to manufacture.
Local dimming is a feature of LED LCD TVs wherein the LED light source behind the LCD is dimmed and illuminated to match what the picture demands. LCDs can’t completely prevent light from passing through, even during dark scenes, so dimming the light source itself aids in creating deeper blacks and more impressive contrast in the picture. This is accomplished by selectively dimming the LEDs when that particular part of the picture — or region — is intended to be dark.
Local dimming helps LED/LCD TVs more closely match the quality of modern OLED displays, which feature better contrast levels by their nature — something CCFL LCD TVs couldn’t do. The quality of local dimming varies depending on which type of backlighting your LCD uses, how many individual zones of backlighting are employed, and the quality of the processing. Here’s an overview of how effective local dimming is on each type of LCD TV.
TVs with full-array backlighting have the most accurate local dimming and therefore tend to offer the best contrast. Since an array of LEDs spans the entire back of the LCD screen, regions can generally be dimmed with more finesse than on edge-lit TVs, and brightness tends to be uniform across the entire screen. Hisense’s impressive U7G TVs are great examples of relatively affordable models that use multiple-zone, full-array backlighting with local dimming.
Because edge lighting employs LEDs positioned on the edge or edges of the screen to project light across the back of the LCD screen, as opposed to coming from directly behind it, it can result in very subtle blocks or bands of lighter pixels within or around areas that should be dark. The local dimming of edge-lit TVs can sometimes result in some murkiness in dark areas compared with full-array LED TVs. It should also be noted that not all LED edge-lit TVs offer local dimming, which is why it is not uncommon to see glowing strips of light at the edges of a TV and less brightness toward the center of the screen.
Since CCFL backlit TVs do not use LEDs, models with this lighting style do not have dimming abilities. Instead, the LCD panel of CCFL LCDs is constantly and evenly illuminated, making a noticeable difference in picture quality compared to LED LCDs. This is especially noticeable in scenes with high contrast, as the dark portions of the picture may appear too bright or washed out. When watching in a well-lit room, it’s easier to ignore or miss the difference, but in a dark room, it will be, well, glaring.
An OLED display uses a panel of pixel-sized organic compounds that respond to electricity. Since each tiny pixel (millions of which are present in modern displays) can be turned on or off individually, OLED displays are called “emissive” displays (meaning they require no backlight). They offer incredibly deep contrast ratios and better per-pixel accuracy than any other display type on the market.
Because they don’t require a separate light source, OLED displays are also amazingly thin — often just a few millimeters. OLED panels are often found on high-end TVs in place of LED/LCD technology, but that doesn’t mean that LED/LCDs aren’t without their own premium technology.
QLED is a premium tier of LED/LCD TVs from Samsung. Unlike OLED displays, QLED is not a so-called emissive display technology (lights still illuminate QLED pixels from behind). However, QLED TVs feature an updated illumination technology over regular LED LCDs in the form of Quantum Dot material (hence the “Q” in QLED), which raises overall efficiency and brightness. This translates to better, brighter grayscale and color and enhances HDR (High Dynamic Range) abilities.
And now to make things extra confusing, part of Samsung’s 2022 TV lineup is being billed as traditional OLEDs, although a deeper dive will reveal this is actually the company’s first foray into a new panel technology altogether called QD-OLED.
LCD panels are backlit by LED lights, so they rely on a backlight behind the panel to make the picture visible, and the LCD layer can"t prevent all light from escaping out of the screen. This means that even in a black scene, the backlight is still on, and some light escapes, causing blacks to appear gray.
Local dimming features on LED TVs are a way to improve the contrast ratio. Since these TVs consist of LED backlights behind an LCD panel, local dimming aims to turn off, or dim, certain zones of the LED backlight, making blacks look darker and highlights brighter. However, there may be some issues with local dimming on some TVs as it could cause blooming around bright objects or for entire zones to light up when there"s a small object. Overall, most local dimming features on modern TV do an effective job at improving the picture quality in dark scenes, and only some lower-end models will have glaring problems.
Over the last 18 months or so we have been exploring the hardware calibration feature of the LG OLED displays (CX and the latest C2 models particularly) and how to optimise the picture for various uses. To do this we’ve been making use of Portrait Display’s Calman calibration software and the “AutoCal” feature that it provides to directly calibrate the screen at a hardware level. This isn’t the only package available to hardware calibrate these screens, but it’s the mostly widely used and popular. We weren’t intending to write a guide or article about this really, other than maybe providing some results as an update and brief overview in our LG CX OLED review and LG 42C2 OLED review. But the more we tested and experimented, the more we realised how potentially complicated and confusing this topic can be. There is a mass of great information out there on various forums and webpages, but it is scattered around and hard to make sense of sometimes. There’s also a lot of great information on Portrait’s website, but nothing that lays the process out from start to finish.
So we thought we would write this guide which covers everything you might need to know for a typical calibration of the LG OLED TV’s. It’s not meant to be definitive or include every possible option, and we aren’t going to cover things like complicated manual calibration steps or professional-usage setup. This is meant as a guide that will hopefully be useful to your average owner who wants to invest a bit of time and money in hardware calibrating the screen for their normal uses like TV, movies and gaming. An LG OLED TV (preferably 2019 models or later)– we have written this guide while using the 2020 CX model but equally this also applies to other 2020 models like the GX for example. It should also apply to the 2019 C9 models, and the more recent 2021 C1 range. Support for the 2022 C2 range is not yet officially available in the Calman software although the pipeline is the same as the C1 models, and having tested this out on our C2 sample we have confirmed it works fine. So you should be good to calibrate even the latest C2 (and other 2022) models. For a full list of LG OLED TV’s that support LG AutoCal and this process see Portrait Display’s list here.
Some parts might change a bit but the gist of it should be the same. The 48″ CX48 and C1 models have become particularly popular for use as a monitor given their relatively small size (for a TV) and was introduced in 2020 as the smallest OLED offering in this space. We reviewed the LG CX OLED back in October 2020 specifically looking at its use as a desktop monitor by the way if you want to know more. More recently in the 2022 C2 range there is also now a 42″ model if you want something smaller still although Calman calibration support is not officially listed yet, but it still works fine. We reviewed the LG 42C2 OLED model in April 2022.
Calman calibration software – in order to access the TV’s hardware calibration feature you will need Portrait Display’s Calman software package. They have worked hand in hand with LG to optimise this performance and process and their software provides full control over the screen, it’s settings and access to the hardware Look Up Tables (LUT). The software carries out the so-called “AutoCal” process for you on the screen once you’ve set a few things up.
The most popular choice specifically for calibrating LG TV’s is ‘Calman Home for LG‘ which is available from Portrait Display’s website at a modest price of $145.00 USD for a one year license. If you have one of their more advanced professional software packages such as Calman Ultimate ($2,995) then the same process is available within those packages too, you don’t need both. For most general consumers looking to hardware calibrate their LG OLED TV the Home package is what they need. For the 2020 CX models it needs to be Calman 2020 v5.11.0 or newer but if you’re buying it new you will get the latest version anyway. If you already have a live license then you should be able to download the latest version of the software from their website for free. The software version is independent of the licence, you can always download and use whatever the latest version is as long as your license is still live.
A calibration device – to carry out the measurements and calibration of the screen you will need a calibration device. There’s a really wide range of devices available but one of the most popular devices for this is theX-rite i1 Display Pro (or more recent Pro Plus model) which is available in all key regions from Amazon (affiliate link). This can of course be used for calibrating your PC monitor as well but it’s a great device to use with the LG AutoCal process. If you have access to a higher end and more expensive spectroradiometer device then that can also help add some additional accuracy which we will discuss later when it comes to the optional Meter Profiling step. Pretty much all of the mainstream meters are supported as well as many more niche offerings. If in doubt check with Calman.
A pattern generator (included in the TV for 2019 models and later) – this is the part that displays all the colours and test patterns on the TV for the calibration process. Thankfully for 2019 LG OLED models and later these are built in to the TV so you don’t need to worry, so that includes the 2020 CX models. This supports SDR, HDR and Dolby Vision (DV) calibrations. If you are wanting to calibrate an earlier TV like a 2018 model you will need to purchase an external pattern generator for HDR and DV calibration as unfortunately there are no test patterns built in to the TV. Portrait Displays have some available to buy on their website, we won’t go in to more detail here about those as they aren’t needed for the 2019 models or later (C9, CX, C1, C2 etc)
A PC or laptop that is connected to the LG OLED TV you are going to calibrate– this should be preferably with its own screen as you won’t be able to use the LG TV while it’s being calibrated. This also needs to be connected to the same home network as the TV, and the TV needs to be connected either using Wi-Fi or Ethernet to that network.
You’re ready to calibrate the screen now!We have provided step by step guidance using the Calman Home for LG software below which is the most common (and affordable) package applicable here. The steps are very similar with their other packages like Calman Ultimate but you’d need to first load up the ‘display specific – AutoCal LG’ workflow from the main menu on those. Plug in your meter to the laptop/PC then load up the Calman software.
Select ‘OLED TV (WRGB)’ for the meter mode – this menu adds a correction profile for the meter based on the screen you are calibrating. It’s not needed for spectro devices like the X-rite i1 Pro or other high-end devices like that, but is there for colorimeters like the commonly used i1 Display Pro. LG OLED TV’s have a WRGB (White, Red, Green, Blue) pixel structure and the correction profile was added in to the Calman software as of v5.12.0 in April 2021. Note that there is also an ‘OLED – (RGB)’ option, but that is designed for OLED screens with a normal RGB pixel structure, not used in the TV space. Previously this was labelled simply as ‘OLED’ in this menu which led to some confusion in the past. Now that Calman have added a specific ‘OLED TV (WRGB)’ mode, you should select that for your colorimeter device for optimal performance.
This step connects the test patterns that will be shown on the screen and used for the measurements and calibration. You can use external pattern generators for this if you want, but we won’t go in to that here and they will cost extra money. Thankfully the LG 2019 OLED TV’s onwards, including the 2020 CX, 2021 C1 and 2022 C2 models, have featured built-in pattern generators, so you can tell the Calman software to access and use those which makes life simpler (and cheaper).
Update 10 Nov 2022 – it seems users are having difficulty using the built-in pattern generator on the LG C2 series after a firmware update from LG, and it is producing incorrect colours and making calibration impossible. We are keeping an eye on the situation and will follow up with Portrait Displays for updates. In the mean time, by all means try to use this process, but it may not work on a C2 at the moment in which case you would need to wait for an update from LG/Portrait.
Select the relevant model for your TV – here we have selected LG – 2020/2021 OLED as we are calibrating an LG CX OLED TV. We should note here that you might see some references online to selecting your TV source as LG 2019 when calibrating the HDR mode, even if your TV is a 2020 model. This relates to an issue with an older 2020 model firmware where it was not generating the right HDR test patterns, but this has been resolved and as long as your TV is running a recent/current firmware you can select the 2020 TV model here without issue for all calibrations (SDR, HDR and DV). For 2022 models like the C2, select “2020/2021 Alpha 9” as well, that will work with those models even though Portrait Displays haven’t yet updated the software “officially”.
The TV itself should switch in to a grey scale pattern page which means the pattern generator is now active, at which point you will need to use your laptop or other display to continue using and controlling the Calman software. This has activated the internal pattern generator from the TV and you should see the Source tab turn green and have ‘LG’ listed

Luminance levels ensure ‘Video (16 – 235)’ is selected. Note that LG AutoCal is not designed to work for ‘PC (0 – 255)’ mode. You can calibrate in the video mode anyway and if your input device operates with full PC RGB just ensure that’s switched on within the TV menu and your device settings afterwards.
You can also perform the full DDC reset here if you didn’t do that earlier. No need to do it again if you did. This step is necessary as it will reset the picture mode selected that you are going to calibrate to panel native settings, preparing it for the AutoCal process. This is a step beyond just resetting the preset mode in the TV menu which would only restore it to the factory calibrated profile. This Full DDC reset removes that factory profile and starts everything from new for the selected picture mode. Obviously you don’t want to do this for any modes you are keeping, and only do it is you’re going to perform an AutoCal completely. The Native mode has really skewed RGB balance, looks too cool/blue and has large dE errors for greyscale and colours by default. Doing the full DDC reset sets it up ready for the AutoCal process. Don’t change anything in the TV OSD menu once you’ve done this.
26. The brightness and contrast adjustment steps of the ‘dynamic range’ page are not needed for LG AutoCal, they will likely be removed in a future update to the software.
The AutoCal calibration has ended, but do NOT un-tick the ‘enable calibration’ box yet (this would disconnect the calibration session). We want to make some shadow detail corrections before we finish. This will make corrections to the very darkest shades to ensure you can see all the relevant detail in dark scenes. This step is necessary because each OLED panel sample varies somewhat and in the very darkest tones it’s hard for AutoCal to do this for you.
The setting to adjust is the ‘OLED shadow detail value’. While observing the test patterns on the screen move the slider up a fair amount (200 or so to start with) and press the ‘commit = on/off’ button to activate the change. This should update the appearance of the grey shades on your screen. Having made a fairly big change on the slider here, you will hopefully see a fairly noticeable change on the shades. You need to then move it up or down, pressing ‘commit’ each time, until you’ve honed in on the right level for your panel. You can change this as many times as you want, so just experiment.
One final note is that maybe you also want a mode with a wide gamut enabled but for SDR content. Perhaps you like the more vivid and colourful look for certain content like anime or cartoons, accepting that this won’t be “accurate” to the defined SDR colour space but might be desirable. If you want you can calibrate a different preset mode (we used ‘SDR Cinema’) but this time select the target colour space as Rec.2020 instead of BT.709, or maybe DCI-P3 if you want to have it a little less wide. Rec.2020 mode will use the panels full native gamut. Follow the other calibration steps and settings as above. At the end of it you should then have one mode ‘Expert (bright)’ configured for normal SDR content with a standard sRGB/BT.709 gamut, and another for SDR with a wide gamut.
We will now talk through the process for calibrating the HDR mode which will be used for a lot of content including HDR movies, games and content from your PC (if connected) and some other HDR TV sources. There is a separate mode for Dolby Vision (DV) content that we will go through after. We like to calibrate two of the HDR modes on the LG OLED TV’s. We use HDR Cinema for movies, videos and general HDR content. That’s the mode we have active when watching HDR PC content, or other general HDR 10 or HLG input sources. Then we calibrate a second modeHDR Gamewhich we set as active for PC gaming, or as the default for consoles connected when they enter HDR mode (PS5, Xbox Series X etc). The HDR Game mode carries the low input lag mode so is optimal for gaming.
Next, click ‘find source’ to connect the LG TV, again as explained earlier in the article. This will begin the test pattern on the screen, but importantly it should still be in HDR mode. You can check this by opening up the TV menu and checking you’re still in the target HDR picture mode. HDR Cinema in our case.
Update 10 Nov 2022 – it seems users are having difficulty using the built-in pattern generator on the LG C2 series after a firmware update from LG, and it is producing incorrect colours and making calibration impossible. We are keeping an eye on the situation and will follow up with Portrait Displays for updates. In the mean time, by all means try to use this process, but it may not work on a C2 at the moment in which case you would need to wait for an update from LG/Portrait.
On the ‘Display Connect’ page you might already have the TV DDC connected from before. If not, click ‘find LG TV’ and connect that as per the steps explained earlier in the article for connecting the TV. Beneath that, make sure you select the correct preset mode you want to calibrate (here we are using HDR Cinema) then press “Full DDC reset”to restore that mode to the native panel state.
A pop up will appear after a few seconds, select ‘LG 20 points HDR’ from the drop down. Don’t bother with any further points, it will just slow down the calibration and won’t bring any additional benefits of note. This Autocal process will then run automatically for you. It takes around 35 – 40 minutes to complete typically with an X-rite i1 Display Pro meter
Proceed to the next ‘Tone Curve’ page. This feature is used to modify the way the TV’s internal processing handles HDR content that exceeds the panels peak luminance. This is referred to as a Roll-Off point. HDR content is mastered with specific peak luminance in mind, which determine how bright the brightest highlights in the content are displayed. These are most commonly 1,000, 4,000, and 10,000 nits. Since the mastered peak luminance may exceed the maximum luminance of the display panel (around 700 nits typically for OLED panels) this features allows you to modify how content that exceeds your specific maximum luminance is handled.

Please note that an LG TV firmware update last year has disabled the ability to drive the in-built pattern generator for DV content it seems when running in that mode. We have reported it to Portrait Displays who in turn are working with LG to correct this. This seems to be temperamental and we were able to run the source pattern again this week while testing the C2 display. So we have written this update to the guide but don’t be alarmed if you cannot load the TV source pattern generator on your TV for DV calibration. This firmware update affects the CX and C2 models we have with us, but it may not impact other supported LG OLED TV’s from the wider range. If not, you can follow this guide fine.
Just beneath the find source button select “window 10%” from the drop down menu then click ‘find source’ to connect the LG TV, again as explained earlier in the article. This will begin the test pattern on the screen, but importantly it should still be in DV mode. You can check this by opening up the TV menu and checking you’re still in the target DV picture mode. “Dolby Vision Cinema Home” in our case.
Note that the source connection is the stage that’s currently not working due to a 2021 firmware update from LG, at least on the CX and C2 models we have for testing. If the source pattern doesn’t load, then it’s likely your TV is also affected and you will need to wait for LG to fix this.
The software suggests that you need to click the source tab and set the Dolby Vision mode to ‘Absolute’ as shown in the screenshot above although we understand this to be a forthcoming change with LG and not something we’ve seen before. If those settings show for you in the source tab then make sure to select ‘absolute’. If not it might look more like the below in which case just ensure Colorspace is set to HDR 2020 in the source tab. We are seeking clarification from Portrait on these settings and if something is being changed.

For background and information, current HDR-compatible televisions are still based on 2.2 gamma at the panel level. The HDR EOTF (ST 2084 or HLG) is then mapped onto the native panel response of 2.2 gamma. Working with LG and Dolby, the Calman software sends special Dolby Vision “Relative Mode” metadata to put the TV’s Dolby Vision engine into pass-through mode. You then calibrate the grayscale 1D LUT to 2.2 gamma and D65 white point using AutoCal. After you calibrate the grayscale to 2.2 gamma and D65, you will use Calman to create a custom Dolby Vision config file, by taking White, Black, Red, Green, and Blue measurements. (that step is shown later).

The actual “detail value” will vary from panel to panel, so you will need to find what is suitable for your screen and viewing environment.
10 November 2022 – added note about current problems with LG C2 internal pattern generator which seems to be affecting all calibration options. We are doing further testing ourselves and following up with Portrait, but don’t be alarmed if the pattern generator doesn’t load or has wrong colours on the C2, you’re not alone! This seems to have been caused by an LG firmware update.
17 May 2022 – added Dolby Vision calibration process, added 2022 model support clarification and testing (e.g. LG C2), improved shadow detail controls guidance in all sections.
Some LCD blur or ghosting issues result from electrical interference or faulty surge protectors. To eliminate this as a cause, try plugging your TV directly into the outlet without any power strips or surge suppressors in the chain. If that solves the problem, you can try using a different power strip.
One of the most common causes of a blurry picture on a flat-screen LCD TV (or monitor) is a mismatch between the content’s resolution and the native resolution capability of the screen.
LCD, Mini-LED, microLED, Plasma, OLED, or QD-OLED all use different types of technology to make moving pictures. However, one thing they all have in common is a “native” resolution. This refers to the TV’s grid of physical pixels (picture elements). A 4K UHD TV has a pixel grid of 3840 x 2160 pixels. This is four times as many pixels as a Full HD TV at 1920×1080. So, for every pixel of information in a Full HD image source, the TV must fill four physical pixels’ worth of data.
Companies like Samsung and Sony have worked tirelessly to create new panel technologies to combat these issues. If you have an old TV, it may not benefit from the fast pixel response times more recent models can achieve.
As for motion blur caused by the sample-and-hold nature of flat panel technology, there are two main features you can activate to combat it. The first is motion smoothing, also known as frame interpolation. Different TV brands have other names, so you’ll have to look for something that refers to motion, smoothness, or do a web search for your TV model with the term “motion smoothing.”
Post-processing features are all of the things that the TV does to the image before displaying it. TV manufacturers have a “secret sauce” of algorithms that help make images look better, but too much post-processing can leave a soft and blurry image.
LG Templates provide a direct upload capability of 1D/3D LUTs generated from LightSpace/ColourSpace into compatible LG 2017/2018/2019/2020/2021/2022 OLED TVs.
Technicolor FW is adding internal LUT capabilities of 10-bit 1D LUT (1024 entries) and 17-Point 3D LUT (4913 individual color points) to LG 2017 B7/C7/E7/G7/W7 OLED TVs.
The free LG PQ Curve Upload Template for LG 2019/2020/2021/2022 OLED TV users can upload the actual peak output number (nits) as required for the LGs Tone Mapping processor to perform more accurate calculations.
Added support for LG Studio (Gen 1) Monitors (LG 2017 B7/C7/E7/G7/W7) OLED TVs using a "special" Technicolor firmware, that enables Internal LUT capabilities. Technicolor firmware is not available for consumers, see AVSForum.
After the installation of the DeviceControl Interface, you will need to create a connection with the LG OLED TV as a device, double click to run the "device" file:
Only Registered Users of a paid LightSpace/ColourSpace License (not ZRO) can access these LG 2017/2018/2019/2020/2021/2022 LG Template for DeviceControl Interface.
DeviceControl Interface will require an internet connection only when the user selects to refresh the cloud to check if they"re available for download any newer LG Template version or when the user will download a specific template to his system.
Once the user downloads any LG Template, the software will work offline. There will be no call to the cloud unless the user clicks on the About Menu to check if any newer version of DeviceControl Interface is available for download.
When you want to download any LG Template for DeviceControl Interface from a facility or office with limited or secured internet connection capabilities, then you can download the LG Templates from your home or temporary enable a WiFi spot from a mobile phone only; connect the notebook with the DeviceControl Interface installed to that temp network for some seconds, just for downloading only the LG Templates.
When DeviceControl Interface connects with the LG OLED TV, it will require a local network connection only, and it will not require any active internet connection.
When the Dynamic Tone Mapping is disabled "Off", the LG TV will use the default "factory" HDR10 tone curve parameters (Peak Luminance, 3x Tone Curve Metadata Point, and 3x Roll-Off Point) and will determine the PQ Luminance of content, based to the HDR10 compliant stream static metadata info (SMPTE ST.2086, MaxFALL and MaxCLL) as follows:
LG OLED TV PQ Curve Upload Template provides a GUI (Graphical User Interface) to configure and upload these seven tone-mapping engine calculation parameters data values to the Tone-Mapping processing unit.
For the tone-mapping calculations to be more accurate, the tone-mapping processing unit will require to know the actual calibrated peak luminance output of the specific OLED TV panel.
That template can be used by any LG 2019/2020/2021/2022 OLED TV user, even if his display has been calibrated or not. It doesn"t matter which calibration software has calibrated the LG OLED TV in HDR10 mode.
For users with calibrated displays from professional calibrators, we don"t recommend changing any value unless they know from the calibrator the Peak Luminance parameter number, as there is no way to see which value its been uploaded internally to the LG OLED TV.
As a tip, the panel Peak Luminance number in nits may appear to the professional calibrator post-verification grayscale report. It"s a detail the user must discuss with the professional calibrator before adjusting the Peak Luminance parameter. When the user knows the Peak Luminance parameter value, any custom parameter upload will not alter/undo the current calibration; it will only change the tone-mapping behavior.
Peak Luminance: Set the target output luminance range for tone-mapping engine calculations. Measure your calibrated peak white using a 100% White pattern (940 digital level) with a 10% window size (L32 loading) pattern with a black background. The "nits" number of that white peak measurement will be the "Peak Luminance" value of that panel.
When you are calibrating HDR10 using the available normal TV menu RGB balance controls (without bypassing the HDR10 Tone-Mapping processing math), all these available RGB Balance controls adjustments are taking place in Gamma space. If the panel peak luminance is higher or lower than the assumed peak luminance of the HDR processing math, you may find yourself pushing the grayscale adjustments in odd directions to compensate, resulting in the potential for banding.
LG 2019/2020 OLED TV will need to perform an image processing procedure using a perceptual quantizer electro-optical transfer function (PQ-EOTF) defined in SMPTE ST.2084, in order to display an HDR image.
When the peak luminance output capability of the LG 2019 OLED TV is not matching the luminance level performance of the mastering monitor used for content mastering, then some tone-mapping processing has to be applied.
You can see to the picture below how Tone-Mapping works; with detailed explanation; when you have an LG 2019 OLED TV panel with 820 nits calibrated peak output, using the default Metadata Point & Roll-Off Point parameter values:
Tone Map 1: When you have a panel with calibrated peak output of 820 nits as entered to the "Peak Luminance" value parameter and have configured the Metadata Point 1: 1000 nits / Roll-Off Point: 70%, when the "Mastering Display Color Volume -> Maximum Display Luminance" value of the content will have 1000 nits. Initially, the tone-mapping processor will remap the content dynamic range 0-1000 nits to match the panel dynamic range 0-820 nits and then perform a hard clip of 1000-10000 nit code values of the content.
The first tone-mapping function will track the PQ-EOTF accurately up to 70% of the Peak Luminance until 574 nits (820 nits peak * 0.7 roll-off = 574 nits) and the second tone-mapping function will tone map the code values of 574-1000 nits using a smooth rollover curve to match the panel 574-820 nits range.
Tone Map 2: When you have a panel with calibrated peak output of 820 nits as entered to the "Peak Luminance" value parameter and have configured the Metadata Point 2: 4000 nits / Roll-Off Point: 60%, when the "Mastering Display Color Volume -> Maximum Display Luminance" value of the content will have 4000 nits. Initially the tone-mapping processor will remap the content dynamic range 0-4000 nits to match the panel dynamic range 0-820 nits and then perform a hard clip of 4000-10000 nit code values of the content.
The first tone-mapping function will track accurately the PQ-EOTF up to 60% of the Peak Luminance until 492 nits (820 nits peak * 0.6 roll-off = 492 nits) and the second tone-mapping function will tone map the code values of 492-4000 nits using a smooth rollover curve to match the panel 492-820 nits range.
Tone Map 3: When you have a panel with calibrated peak output of 820 nits as entered to the "Peak Luminance" value parameter and have configured the Metadata Point 3: 10000 nits / Roll-Off Point: 50%, when the "Mastering Display Color Volume -> Maximum Display Luminance" value of the content will have 10000 nits. Initially, the tone-mapping processor will remap the content dynamic range 0-10000 nits to match the panel dynamic range 0-820 nits.
The first tone-mapping function will track the PQ-EOTF accurately up to 50% of the Peak Luminance until 410 nits (820 nits peak * 0.5 roll-off = 410 nits) and the second tone-mapping function will tone map the code values of 410-10000 nits using a smooth rollover curve to match the panel 410-820 nits range.
Then the OLED TV will track the PQ-EOTF accurately to the maximum nits the panel can output and will "hard clip" the content above to the entered "Peak Luminance" parameter value.
LG 2019/2020 OLED TV configured to track the PQ-EOTF to the max nits possible for the panel without any active tone-mapping (hard-clip), this is the most accurate way to preserve the creative intent with a more authentic way.
LG 2019 OLED TV"s feature a "Peak Brightness" control. The default setting for HDR10 mode of Peak Brightness is "High", which will provide the highest panel peak luminance output when you will use it with custom PQ curve parameters values.
The White sub-pixel can"t be permanently disabled when you will set Peak Brightness at "Off", but setting to "Off" it will significantly reduce the panel peak luminance output.
The LG OLED WRGB displays implements white with target peak luminance higher than maximum luminance using three-color subpixels (W/R/G, B/W/R, G/B/W or R/G/B) among four-color (W/R/G/B) subpixels in order to adjust a color temperature.
In order to enhance the luminance of the LG OLED TV, especially for HDR mode, an additional a W sub-pixel (unfiltered transmitting white light) has been added to the other three sub-pixels (RGB) which are filtered.
The unfiltered White sub-pixels are much more efficient than the RGB-subpixels, so efficient drive schemes based to "White Replacement algorithm" utilize the W primary as much as possible and the RGB primaries as less as possible, by computing and removing/subtracting the neutral luminance from an RGB triad of sub-pixels and transfer/assign it to the W sub-pixel, this method increases the overall efficiency of the display panel.
One recommendation you can test, when the maximum luminance (Peak Luminance value) of the LG 2019 OLED TV is 800 nits, to track PQ-EOTF as accurately as possible up to 540 nits (540 nits / 800 nits = 0.675). This will require to set the Roll-Off Point @ 68% value.
LG 2019 OLED TV"s featuring the "AI Brightness" function, to optimize brightness based on ambient light conditions of the viewing environment illuminance level.
LG OLED TV needs to perform an image processing procedure using a perceptual quantizer electro-optical transfer function (PQ-EOTF) defined in SMPTE ST. 2084, in order to display HDR10 content.
However, since the PQ-EOTF used in the image processing procedure of the LG OLED TV is derived in a dark room, a just-noticeable difference (JND) in a bright room is not applied.
When the LG OLED TV displays an HDR10 content subjected to the image processing procedure using the PQ-EOTF in a bright room, a luminance saturation phenomenon wherein gray-level banding is caused in a high luminance region of an image is generated, deteriorating visibility.
The LG OLED TV may display the output luminance of the input gray level along the basic PQ-EOTF curve and represent the gray level up to the target peak luminance of the display. In the case of applying the illuminance-based weight to adjust the PQ-EOTF curve, as the illuminance-based weight increases, the PQ-EOTF curve is shifted to the left.
If the high-luminance rate of occupancy of the pixels exceeding the target peak luminance of the LG OLED TV in the HDR10 content exceeds the threshold, the target peak luminance gradually increases from the target peak luminance to the maximum luminance along a roll-off curve without saturation of the high gray level part corresponding to high luminance equal to or greater than the target peak luminance, thereby increasing distinguishability of the gray level of the HDR image and reducing luminance saturation.
The luminance analyzer analyzes the luminance information of the HDR content received from the EOTF processor and calculates the high-luminance rate of occupancy of the high-luminance part having a target peak luminance or more of the LG OLED TV in the HDR10 content.
The LG OLED TV may adjust the luminance of the HDR10 content according to illuminance and increase the luminance of the high-luminance part when the high-luminance rate of the adjusted HDR10 content is equal to or greater than the threshold, thereby increasing gray level distinguishability of the HDR content and reducing luminance saturation. Therefore, it is possible to improve visibility and image quality.
The LG OLED TV may display the HDR10 content with the target peak or less when the high-luminance rate of the HDR10 content adjusted according to illuminance is less than the threshold, thereby improving visibility and maintaining power consumption.
