Nikkei Asia reported on the 21st that the price of LCD panels for Smart TVs kept falling. Among the prices in June, that has been determined by panel manufacturers in China, Taiwan, South Korea, and TV manufacturer, the 55-inch Opencell price has decreased. The price has been declining for 11 consecutive months, continuing to rewrite the record low since the survey began in 2006.  The price of 32-inch products for small-size TVs also dropped by 15 percent, setting a new record low.

The report points out that the price of TV LCD panels will continue to fall. Apparently, one of the strong reasons is continuous inflation. The continuous inflation has been deeply engulfing the world. The continuous health concerns, and the war, are leading to a major slowdown in the economy. There are rising doubts about the demand for TVs as the customer’s needs are changing. For instance, people are now considering essential goodies rather than spending on electronics when they already have one. For example, one user with a good Smart TV will think twice before upgrading to a new model just because yes. If the old model is serving well, then there is no real reason to upgrade due to technological upgrades.

However, there is still hope for small TVs. According to reports, panel factories in mainland China are reportedly expanding the production of 32-inch LCD panels. In the past, 55-inch products were the main priority due to their higher profit margin. However, the 55-inch panels now sit in unsatisfactory market conditions. Therefore, the factories will expand the supply of small products. After all, these smart TVs are commercialized at lower prices. Furthermore, some users are willing to save money no matter the display’s size.

Samsung, which always has been a strong maker in the LCD business, is shutting down the division.The company will focus on OLED and upcoming technologies. However, we don’t know if the costlier OLED TVs are in a better situation.

Prices of LED TVs are set to rise further from April as the cost of open-cell panels has gone up in the global markets by up to 35 per cent in the past one month.

Brands including Panasonic, Haier and Thomson are considering to increase prices from April this year, while some like LG have already raised prices due to hike in prices of open-cell.

Panasonic India and South Asia President and CEO Manish Sharma said, "Panel prices are rising continuously and so are the prices of TVs. It is likely that TV prices may increase further by April."

"The prices of open-cell have gone up tremendously and the trends are that it would keep on increasing," said Braganza adding that "if that continues, we would have to continuously increase prices".

Companies import television panels in an open-cell state, which require further assembling with value addition before being shipped to market for sale.

Super Plastronics Pvt Ltd (SPPL), the brand licensee for French Electronics brand Thomson and US-based brand Kodak, said there is a scarcity of open cell in the market and the prices have almost gone up by three-folds in the past eight months.

"From the past eight months, there has been a month-on-month increase in panel prices, we have witnessed more than 350 per cent spike in LED TV panels. Globally, panel market has slowed down. Despite that, there has been an increase of 35 per cent in the past 30 days," said SPPL Chief Executive Officer Avneet Singh Marwah.

"We are not going for any price increase now for TV. We have already increased the prices by around 7-4 per cent in January and 3 per cent in February, because of the hike in panel prices," said LG Electronics India Vice-President (Home Appliances) Vijay Babu.

Marwah added that the open-cell market is dominated by Chinese manufacturers and alleged that TV makers from China are getting better prices from them.

"Currently, there is no alternative apart from China where all panel manufacturers are present. It has been closely observed that only Chinese brands are getting better supply and price.

Last year, the government had restored the import duty on open cell. It had re-imposed 5 per cent customs duty on the import of open-cell for TVs from October 1, 2020, after having nil duty for a year.

It further said that the open cell panel and the chips of the TV are predominantly imported from China besides some other markets as Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam and only the last-mile assembly is done in India.

Continuing strong demand and concerns about a glass shortage resulting from NEG’s power outage have led to a continuing increase in LCD TV panel prices in Q1. Announcements by the Korean panel makers that they will maintain production of LCDs and delay their planned shutdown of LCD lines has not prevented prices from continuing to rise. Panel prices increased more than 20% for selected TV sizes in Q3 2020 compared to Q2, and by 27% in Q4 2020 compared to Q3, and we now expect that average LCD TV panel prices in Q1 2021 will increase by another 9%.

The television industry has welcomed the government"s decision to scrap the customs duty on import of open cell TV panels, saying the move will boost domestic manufacturing.

In a late night notification on Tuesday, the finance ministry said "open cell, (15.6 inch and above), for use in the manufacture of Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) and Light Emitting Diode (LED) TV panel", would attract nil duty.

"The company has long been committed to the government’s Make in India initiative. This withdrawal of duty on open cell provides a strong boost to local manufacturing and will help us further enhance our efforts in this direction," said Sony India Managing Director Sunil Nayyar.

Besides removing 5 per cent customs duty imposed on import of open cell TV panel, the government has waived customs duty on import of chip on Film, Printed Circuit Board Assembly (PCBA) and Cell (glass board/ substrate), which are used to manufacture open cell TV panels.
