GPS devices are powerful embedded machines that incorporate everything you need for a useful portable computer: CPU/RAM, touch screens for user interaction, storage - often with external options, usually bluetooth and audio capabilities but most importantly they contain a GPS unit and can be obtained at thrift stores for sometimes as little as $3 while a usable but still low-quality GPS module meant for custom development that interacts by USB/serial/SPI tend to run CAD$20 and over at the time of writing. Indeed, many models will report the same serial NMEA 0813 data stream over their USB port that you would be working with on a dedicated module anyway and smaller units can be liberated of their enclosures, batteries and touch screens to provide your electronics project with a low-powered solution that is actually worth the price.

That being said the software that comes with them is of zero interest to me. I exclusively use Waze on a device with an active internet connection when I"m driving; sure Google might be eavesdropping on every rendezvous et liaison I make but it tells me where the gestapo are hiding and when you drive like a bastard (as one does) that"s well worth dropping your drawers for the other G-man. Ya feel me?

So, I have taken to collecting these little overlooked devices to modify them. Not because I need them in an era of supercomputer class smartphones. But because I can"t help myself; something about being denied hackery (so they thought) in my childhood. It"s a pathology. Garmin devices support third-party developed apps which are distributed via their Connect IQ app store. They also provide a free SDK for developing apps and that spells: great place to start tearing into their operating system! Details (and links) worth noting from the FAQ:

The RF shielding is a great deterrent to further investigation or tomfoolery; as mentioned when I have time I intend to try to use a logic analyzer to hopefully tap useful serial NMEA or PVT (proprietary Garmin binary protocol) signals on the 18 pin connector mounted to the rear peripheral board and access to the filesystem through its standard USB Mass Storage interface sounds, at first blush, like a relatively easy way to extend the base functionality. I will also probably try to fiddle with the SDK; in the unlikely event I can"t make any of these avenues work to enhance its utility I would have good motivation to remove those shields.
