So it has the property of reflecting electromagnetic radiation in the infrared region (spectrum) and having a low electrical resistivity.

The ITO is the best TCO because it is a good combination of transparency and conductivity. Because of its transparency, ITO glass does not absorb light photons. Absorption occurs when the photon energy corresponds to what is necessary to let the electron in an excited state.

To produce the thin films of ITO glass, it is common to use sputtering techniques with radio frequency assisted by constant magnetic field (RF magnetron sputtering). The sputtering technique involves the transport of molecules or atoms ejected from a source (also called the target) to a substrate.

The ITO glass is an expensive material because of the indium mineral, but this is not the biggest problem. The biggest challenge is the shortage expected to take place in a few years because indium is a rare mineral.

This is bad news because the market of touch screen devices is in an expansion mode and every day the demand increases since bigger and bigger screens are created using a larger amount of ITO.

Some hypotheses are the cadmium oxide, silver nanowires and graphene (carbon nanomaterial). The first is almost as transparent as ITO glass and has a greater capacity of conduct electricity, but it is very unstable and deteriorates quickly (half-life).

One solution to this problem is to apply 20% of ITO in the cadmium oxide just to create a film of protection on the material. Another problem, an environmental one, is that this oxide is more toxic and demands care in the manipulation and disposal of waste. This could be a future environmental problem.

Silver is very similar to high quality ITO, but it is quite flexible. Unfortunately silver nanowires are ten times more expensive to produce than the already expensive ITO and cheaper metals seem to not work.

The graphene can be used for touch screen displays because of the characteristics but is an expensive technology today. In the future the price between ITO glass and carbon nanotubes will be equivalent because of the lack of indium and carbon segment growth cheapening their cost. So, the graphene looks a promising option.

But that does not rule out this option because the processing power is in expansion. Anyway these free indium techniques do not solve a fundamental problem: with or without touch, the electrodes that provide power to the pixels on the LCD screen depend on the ITO glass. This will be solved only with the development of new materials that emulate the highly desirable ability of the ITO glass to combine transparency and conductivity.

It is safe to say that the cost of LCD displays does not look to be decreasing any time soon, if at all. Part of the reason for higher cost displays is not only the potential cost increase due to an ITO shortage. But a labor shortage that is taking place in many LCD manufacturing locations.

Chinese display panel makers accounted for nearly half of the share in the global liquid crystal display TV panel market in the first half of this year, dominating the industry.

Sigmaintell estimated that the gap between supply and demand would widen further, and the panel market may face a long-term risk of oversupply. The industry may have to undergo a reshuffle given fierce market competition, it said.

The panel makers must reduce costs, optimize their internal structures, promote technological innovation and explore more innovative applications, the report by the consultancy said.

Separately, BOE"s Gen 10.5 TFTLCD production line has entered operation in Hefei, Anhui province. The plant will produce high-definition LCD screens of 65 inches and above.

CSOT also announced in November last year that its Gen 11 TFT-LCD and active-matrix OLED production line had officially began operation. The project will produce 43-inch, 65-inch and 75-inch liquid crystal display screens.

China is expected to replace South Korea as the world"s largest flat-panel display producer in 2019, a report from the China Video Industry Association and the China Optics and Optoelectronics Manufacturers Association said.

Caihong Display Devices plans to spend CNY2.3 billion (USD348 million) expanding its capacity to make liquid crystal display panels, an investment the Chinese manufacturer expects to generate an extra CNY2.1 billion in operating income each year.

Samsung Display is ending direct production of LCD panels in South Korea and China by the end of this year, according to a report by the global news agency Reuters.

Samsung Display also plans to keep production at its 8.5G LCD fab in Suzhou, China in the meantime, while overhauling its L7-2 fab for production of POLED panels and its L8 fab for QD-OLED panels, indicated the sources.

The Korean panel maker is also looking to halt the operations of the Suzhou 8.5G line by the third quarter of 2022 and is currently in talks to sell the LCD panel plant to Chinese panel makers, said the sources, adding that the completion of a deal will mark Samsung Display ‘s exit from the LCD TV panel market.

Meanwhile, TV panel prices, which have been trending upward recently along with reduced production caused by the pandemic, are expected to stay flat in April, as capacity resumption of most panel plants in China is expected to reach over 90% in the month, while TV brands are likely to slow down their panel purchases amid pandemic-induced uncertainty, commented the sources.

Presumably, while Samsung may not be directly manufacturing LCD, the industry will still be able to buy Samsung LCD displays – just manufactured, as some will be already, by other companies in China and Taiwan.

I really don’t see direct view LED taking the place of single LCD displays, but much of the future of signage is in LED that fills entire walls and other surfaces, inside and outside.

▲The global large-size LCD panel shipment data share in July 2020, and the total shipment area of large-size LCD screen TVs and monitors accounted for nearly 90%. Therefore, large-size LCD panels are undoubtedly one of the most important battlefields for LCD panel competition.

It is a capability in itself to be able to make LCD technology large-scale, high-efficiency, and low-cost landing into a tangible panel module that can be used in terminal products. This is one of the reasons why Chinese screen manufacturers have become more and more powerful in the LCD field.

In December 2017, BOE"s Hefei 10.5-generation production line was officially put into operation. This is also the world"s first 10.5-generation production line. From catching up to overtaking, Chinese screen makers have begun to take the lead in the LCD industry.

This is turning into something of a series, but following on from my postings on the state of the LCD TV panel market in Japan and Korea, now it"s time to take a look at what"s going on in one of the world"s biggest markets for LCD TVs – and just about everything –, China.

Although the recent tough times have led to both the Korean giants, LG and Samsung, delaying their plans to open LCD plants in China – and rumours in China suggest this may lead to a shelving of such plans –, the Chinese LCD panel business is booming.

In the first quarter of this year China overtook Japan as an LCD panel manufacturing country. It"s still behind the true giants of the industry, South Korea and Taiwan, but as they say, it"s working on that.

The biggest Chinese TV manufacturers, BOE Technology Group and TCL Group, have recently started operations at their own large-panel LCD panel plants, and plan to boost production further, meaning that LCD production in China next year will be double this year"s level.

And although there"s a common misconception that the emerging Chinese market is only buying basic flatpanel TVs to replace old CRT TVs, or simply bring TV to more households, in fact Chinese companies are keeping pace with their Japanese and Korean neighbours when it comes to rolling out new technology.

Meanwhile, the boom in LCD panel production capacity in China, and the slowing domestic demand for TVs, threatens to further exacerbate the global oversupply in the market.

While Japanese companies such as Tokyo Electron and Asahi Glass already have plants in China, to date most Chinese manufacturers are concentrating on TV-size panels, which are simpler to manufacture than the smaller panels used, for example, on tablet devices and smartphones.

However, although BOE and TCL have only just started making large-screen displays, both have plans to switch some production to the smaller, more intricate panels for handheld devices. And that acquisition of knowledge and capability will pose a threat to technology the Japanese and Korean companies have taken many years to develop.

China is the leader in producing LCD display panels, with a forecast capacity share of 56 percent in 2020. Chinese companies have gained a competitive edge in the large-screen display industry and the exit of South Korean counterparts such as Samsung Electronics and LG Display from the liquid crystal display market will bring opportunities for China"s panel makers despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Market research firm Sigmaintell said BOE Technology Group Co Ltd-a leading Chinese supplier of display products and solutions-became the world"s largest shipper of LCD TV panels for the first time in 2019.

The Beijing-based company shipped 53.3 million units of LCD panels in 2019, with production capacity increasing by more than 20 percent on a yearly basis.Chinese companies have gained an upper hand in large-screen LCD displays. The consultancy said the LCD TV panel production area of Chinese manufacturers will account for more than 50 percent of the global total this year, surpassing South Korean competitors who are accelerating the shutdown of large-sized LCD panel production capacity due to competition from Chinese manufacturers.

It estimated the production capacity of large-sized LCD panels will continue to increase in China over the next three years. In addition, global LCD TV panel shipments stood at 283 million pieces last year, a slight decrease of 0.2 percent year-on-year. Meanwhile, the shipment area was 160 million square meters, an increase of 6.3 percent year-on-year.

"Chinese companies have gained an upper hand in large-screen LCD displays. Samsung and LG"s decision to exit from the LCD sector means Chinese panel makers will take a dominant position in this field," said Li Dongsheng, founder and chairman of Chinese tech giant TCL Technology Group Corp.

Li said South Korean firms will focus on organic LED screens and quantum dot LED displays, while Chinese TV panel makers are catching up at a rapid pace.

Data consultancy Digitimes Research said it comes as little surprise that Samsung has opted to withdraw from the LCD panel sector as its LCD business was losing money in every quarter of 2019 due to challenges from Chinese competitors.

BOE said its Gen 10.5 TFTLCD production line achieved mass production in Hefei, Anhui province, in March 2018. The plant mainly produces high-definition LCD screens of 65 inches and above. With a total investment of 46 billion yuan (US$6.5 billion), the company"s second Gen 10.5 TFT-LCD production line launched operations in Wuhan, Hubei province, in December.

The Gen 11 TFT-LCD and active-matrix OLED production line of Shenzhen China Star Optoelectronics Technology, a subsidiary of TCL, officially entered operations in November 2018, producing 43-inch, 65-inch and 75-inch LCD screens.

Chen Lijuan, an analyst at Sigmaintell, said panel manufacturers should not just invest in production lines, but also pay more attention to the establishment of the whole supply chain, including raw materials, equipment and technology.

Bian Zheng, deputy director of research at AVC Revo, a unit of market consultancy firm AVC, said China will have a 51 percent market share in global TV shipments in 2020, while South Korea will have 25 percent, adding that large-screen TV panels will bolster healthy development of the industry.

Bian said the OLED and QLED will be the next-generation flat-panel display technologies to be in the spotlight. LG Display is currently the world"s only supplier of large-screen OLED TV panels.

OLED is a relatively new technology and part of recent display innovation. It has a fast response rate, wide viewing angles, super high-contrast images and richer colors. It is much thinner and can be made flexible, compared with traditional LCD display panels.

This question is important. Outdoor panels are usually seen from further distance, thus resolution will be lower. Outdoor led panels will likely be brighter because they are used in sunlight. Also outdoor panels will be more durable as they need to withstand weather conditions, dust, moisture and dirt. Indoor panels offer superior color, smaller pixels and a more refined picture. For the same pitch, indoor screens are cheaper. For all these reasons, we recommend indoor panels, unless you actually need to use an outdoor screen.

3) Wall Mounted: Some panels can be drilled and mounted into the wall. This is a great option if you’re looking for an aesthetically clean look with easy maintenance features, but it will add cost to the panels.

Leading Chinese panel firms, including San’an Optoelectronics, Shenzhen"s Jiangxi Zhaochi Semiconductor, and Xiamen-based Changelight, have made big bets, which is expected to drive the development of these types of displays.

The global shipments of medium-sized mini-LED panels should jump by 86 percent to 13.8 million units this year from a year ago, and over 95 percent of the total should go to Apple, based on the white paper. Mini-LED displays used in TV sets are expected to tally 4.6 million units, and next year, large shipments of mini-LED displays for vehicles should begin.

Chinese panel suppliers TCL China Star Optoelectronics Technology, Boe Technology Group, and Skyworth Group are developing mini and micro-LED displays. Some of those are for cars. TCL CSOT partnered with teams from carmaker Mercedes-Benz and tire manufacturer Continental to develop a 47.5-inch mini-LED display with 8K resolution for vehicles.
