You could almost see it happening in slow motion: your smartphone is in your hand one moment, and the next thing you know, it’s barreling toward the ground in a nosedive. Sometimes the layers of glass and plastic will hold up, but all too often, this scenario will lead to a chipped, cracked, or broken phone screen.

Thanks to the right-to-repair movement, the options for mending a broken phone screen have expanded. Between simple DIY fixes, third-party repair shops, and even manufacturer-sponsored mail-in programs, there’s an option for everyone.

It all boils down to a difficult-to-reach compromise between consumer desires and engineering reality. In other words, we want phones with maxed out displays that also feature an elegant design. However, those slim edges and nearly bezel-less screens have to make some concessions in the durability department.

“When you drop your phone, elastic energy stored in the phone’s glass is converted into surface energy, which is why your glass cracks,” the company notes in a September 2018 blog post. “[W]hen you drop your phone, the force of impact will overcome the surface compression, resulting in small stresses that could lead to the shattering of your screen.”

Broken screens come in various levels of severity—from light scratches, to spiderweb-like patterns, to entirely missing chunks of glass—and you could be dealing with anything from a completely shattered display and a broken phone, to a simple cosmetic issue.

First, you should assess the damage, which means getting your phone on a solid surface and under a good light, not just giving it a quick once-over before stuffing it back in your pocket. With a little bit of stress testing and careful prodding you should be able to work out whether the screen is about to fall off or fail completely. In a lot of cases it will stay in place, cracks and all, so you can at least keep tweeting, as long as the screen is still visible and functioning.

The name of the game here is, “hold out until I’m eligible for an upgrade.” If you want to keep using the cracked phone, and don’t want to risk losing glass or slicing up your fingers, cover the screen with a layer of packing tape. Line everything up carefully and trim it with an X-Acto knife, and it may look almostlike a real screen protector.

This is the gussied-up version of the packing tape solution. Using a screen protector ensures you have no seams and a clean line around the edges of the screen. Granted, that might not be much of a concern when there’s a spiderweb of cracks underneath.

It’s possible to replace a broken phone screen on your own. We’ll refer you to iFixit for their excellent, step-by-step guide with photos. A few key things to keep in mind here: Before you decide to go this route, look into the cost of a replacement screen. Today’s phone screens, which incorporate touch interaction and possibly biometric sensors, don’t come cheap.

It is an ATT branded screen protector. It literally says "No Hassle Replacement" right on the packaging. It was sold to me, (and I"m sure AlexandraRS and every other person asking about it in these threads), as a super easy replacement. You walk into an ATT store and they replace it. Except that seems to be impossible. One store is out of stock, the other says you have to do it online.

And yes, I can do it online, but I don"t want to. I don"t want to register with Bodyguardz, I don"t want to wait and pay shipping, and then get charged if my broken screen doesn"t make it back to them in 60 days. None of that was part of the pitch, not was the $8 replacement fee.

There are quite a few screen protectors to choose from, each with its own set of confusingly similar-sounding features. Adding to the confusion is the amount of screen-protector manufacturers, each with their own areas of expertise.

Some excel at providing cheap but reliable protectors, while others focus on a premium experience, using the best (and often most expensive) materials available, creating the creme de la creme of screen protectors. With so many options to choose from, it can be a little daunting finding the one that’s right for you.

So instead of wading through thousands of screen protectors for hundreds of phone models and brands, we’ve put together a list of some of the best screen protector manufacturers you can buy from, to help you avoid the hassle of researching them yourself.

First and foremost, you’ll need to find a screen protector that fits your specific phone. Screen protectors are cut to match specific phone models, and that doesn’t just mean screen size, but also cutouts for things like fingerprint readers and selfie camera notches.

Second, you’ll need to decide how much protection you want. Screen protectors are made from two broadly different materials – plastic and tempered glass. The tempered glass versions are harder so offer greater protection against scratches and impacts, but they tend to cost more.

Not a lot, usually. Most screen protectors are similar in price, usually costing between £3 and £15 – and you’ll often be able to pick up a twin pack of protectors for under £10. Applying a screen protector isn’t something to be rushed. You need to take care to prevent dust or air bubbles getting trapped between your phone screen and protector, so it pays to carefully follow the instructions if you want the best results.

Most screen protectors come with cleaning wipes, lint-free cloths and little sticky pads for removing dust specks or positioning the protector just so, but even then particles have a habit of sneaking through. It’s much more difficult to install a screen protector on the iPhone 12 or iPhone 13 than it is on previous iPhone models: The edge-to-edge display has fewer features (like a Home button) that you can use to align the protector, so an alignment tool is essential for good installation. I’ve installed hundreds of glass screen protectors over the past 10-plus years, and the recent innovation of this frame has completely changed how I think about screen protectors. This protector matches the size and shape of the iPhone’s display, and on the iPhone 13 models, it leaves only the earpiece exposed. The rest of the “notch,” the black area where the Face ID system is located, is covered and protected. We tested extensively to ensure the cameras and sensors wouldn’t be impacted by being covered with glass, and we found no issues. Even a selfie taken with the sun glaring over my shoulder looked the same as one taken with an uncovered phone.

Spigen’s glass is as clear as it gets. We saw no issues with clarity or brightness, and we quickly got used to the Glas.tR EZ Fit being on the phone. Although any glass surface will accumulate fingerprints and oil from skin, we found that this one didn’t show them too readily, and they wiped off easily. The touchscreen’s responsiveness was unaffected, since it still recognized even the slightest brush of a finger (and still worked with touchscreen gloves).

In our Mohs hardness tests, the Glas.tR EZ Fit measured between 7 and 8. The tests will include (a) a hardware test to check the display and touch screen, where Your screen will turn red, then green, then blue; and (b) a screen verification, where You will be asked three (3) questions to determine the condition of Your Product.

The period of warranty service coverage under the MCSP Bundle shall begin on the date of purchase of the MCSP Bundle (which must be registered within thirty (30) days of purchase of such MCSP Bundle), and continues for the earlier of: (i) 24 months; or (ii) upon the screen on the Product having been repaired three (3) times within such coverage period (“Term”). Warranty services under the MCSP Bundle will expire on the last day of the twenty-four (24) month period immediately following such registration date, if not terminated sooner in accordance with this Section 5. The limited warranty coverage provided under the MCSP Bundle will terminate immediately (a) if you reject these terms within thirty (30) days of purchasing the MCSP Bundle, (b) if Your Product fails the hardware diagnostics testing, or (c) upon attempting to transfer the MCSP Bundle to a new or different device. In the event of termination under subsections (a) or (b) above, You may return Your MCSP Bundle to the retailer from which you purchased for a full refund.

In the event of a Screen Protection Coverage incident during the Term of this Agreement, please go to https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/mcp/service to log in your repair request and follow the directions provided to mail in Your Product. Once Motorola authorizes Your claim, We will at Our sole discretion (i) repair/replace the screen of Your Product with new or refurbished parts, or (ii) if We determine that the screen cannot be repaired, if parts are no longer available, or if parts have been discontinued then, We will instead replace Your Product with another device of equal or greater value, at Motorola’s discretion. Any such replacement will be in lieu of a repair, and will be Your exclusive remedy in the event the Product is not repairable. Parts will be replaced with those of like kind and quality manufactured by Motorola or manufacturer of the MCSP Bundle components. If the screen of Your Product is able to be repaired/replaced under the terms hereof, service will be provided by one of Motorola’s authorized service centers, whereby any such repair/replacement for any Screen Protection Coverage will be done at no cost to You. You may be asked to provide proof of purchase as a condition to receiving service under this Agreement. Your original purchase receipt should be kept with this Agreement in a safe place. We will also replace, at no cost to You, the screen protector for the Product. But remember, for the repair/replacement to be covered, the incident resulting in Screen Protection Coverage must have happened while the MCSP Bundle was installed on the Product and You must have registered the MCSP Bundle within thirty (30) days of Your purchase. You are responsible to backup all Product software and data prior to commencement of screen repair/replacement. In the event the Product has damage that is not covered under Screen Protection Coverage, then Motorola (or its authorized service center or subcontractors) may still be able to fix the screen of Your Product, but it will not be free, and the cost will be determined by Motorola and You will need to pay for the cost of any damage that is not covered under this Agreement.

The limited warranty provided under the MCSP Bundle and this Agreement does not cover damage to the Motorola screen protector or protective case, which are covered by their manufacturer warranties. Fortunately, the display still works, and perhaps the touchscreen controls too. So, what do you do now? Here are some things to do right after cracking your phone"s screen.

If so, arranging a fix should be straightforward. In most cases, if your phone screen is broken, the main problem is going to be living without it for a few days. That"s as bad as it gets (although you might have to pay an excess charge).

The problems with cracked smartphone screens start when it transpires you cannot get a replacement screen on the insurance. When this happens, you"ll need to take matters into your own hands.

Whether you can’t make calls due to the smashed phone screen, or it has been sent away for repairs, you"ll need a replacement. The best place to find one is usually stashed away in the back of a drawer.

Even if you don"t have an old phone you can switch to temporarily, a friend or relative might. Ask, and you"ll have a handy replacement until you"ve decided what to do with your phone and its broken screen.

For displays where chips and shards of glass are loose or missing, adding a screen protector is pointless. It won"t be able to adhere properly as the glass is in motion. The result: you wasted money on a screen protector.

But where the crack is minimal, putting a screen protector over a cracked screen might help keep the glass from cracking further. It might prevent further spidering.

By now, you might have realized (or decided) that you don"t actually need a new phone. But how would you go about replacing the screen if you cracked your mobile phone display?

YouTube is another great resource for repair tutorials. Replacement screens can be bought online, via sites like eBay and AliExpress. Benefits of a DIY fix include the keeping down the cost of repair, as well as a feeling of accomplishment.

Uncertainty over DIY (“can I really put a screen protector on a cracked screen?”) might lead you to an alternative solution: paying someone else to do it.

While you could ship your phone to the official manufacturer, you"re going to pay through the nose for that option. Look at Apple"s repair fees – it"s not cheap to get a repair if the cracked screen is out-of-warranty.

There"s probably a local phone repair shop that you can try, and a Google search will show you where to find one, as well as customer reviews. Although you"ll probably be paying by the hour, a skilled technician can replace a screen pretty quickly.

If your phone is still working, and the screen doesn"t appear to be in danger of completely falling apart, why not just keep using it? Sure, it"ll be annoying to look at for a bit, but you"ll get used to it.

Saving the money it would cost for a new phone is always nice. If you"re on a contract that"s soon expiring, this is your best option. You can always put a piece of sticky tape across the crack in the screen. Keep your phone otherwise protected with a protective case, and it should see you through to the next upgrade.

While broken smartphone displays are frustrating, ugly, and kill your phone"s resell value, don"t let it cast a shadow. A broken smartphone screen is merely a challenge to be overcome.

Eventually your phone is going to be replaced, so if the other options don"t work out, have a fall-back plan. You might contact the carrier for an upgrade, or simply carry on using the phone with the damaged screen.
