You can use Sidecar wirelessly, but to keep your iPad charged during use, connect it directly to your Mac with the USB charge cable that came with your iPad.
If you want your keyboard, mouse, or trackpad to control your Mac and iPad, with the iPad showing its own Home Screen and apps rather than the desktop and apps of your Mac, use Universal Control instead.
You can repeat this step for other Mac windows, or simply drag other Mac windows to and from your iPad. To move a window back to your Mac, you can also move your pointer over the full-screen button
The sidebar puts commonly used Mac controls on the side of your iPad screen. It includes Command, Shift, and other modifier keys, so you can choose essential commands with your finger or Apple Pencil instead of a keyboard.
To point, click, select, and perform tasks such as drawing, editing photos, and manipulating objects on your iPad while it"s extending or mirroring your Mac display, you can use your Apple Pencil instead of the mouse or trackpad connected to your Mac. You can also use it to write, sketch, and mark up documents while seeing the updates live on your Mac.
Many apps on Mac have Touch Bar controls that make common actions even easier. With Sidecar, you get a Touch Bar on your iPad screen even if your Mac doesn’t have a Touch Bar. Tap its controls with either your finger or Apple Pencil. If the Touch Bar doesn"t appear when using an app that offers Touch Bar controls:
During your session, you can type using the keyboard connected to your Mac, or you can use a keyboard connected to your iPad, such as the Smart Keyboard or Magic Keyboard for iPad. To point, click, or select with a mouse or trackpad, use the mouse or trackpad connected to your Mac, or use an Apple Pencil on your iPad.
While using your iPad as a display, you can switch to an iPad app, then interact with that app on your iPad as you normally would. This suspends your session until you switch back to the Sidecar app, which appears on your iPad home screen only while using Sidecar.
To use Sidecar wirelessly, both devices must be within 10 meters (30 feet) of each other and have Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Handoff turned on. Your iPad must not be sharing its cellular connection and your Mac must not be sharing its internet connection.

Tap the arrow to pan in the opposite direction. To pan vertically, rotate iPad to landscape orientation. You can reverse the direction of a vertical pan, too.

Satechi Aluminum Desktop Stand for $45: This is my favorite tablet stand, so much so that I recently took it with me on a trip. It packs down relatively well, and it is very stable—there"s no wobbling around here. You can also adjust the angle quite a bit. It can handle huge sizes too—it worked perfectly with my 12.9-inch iPad Pro.
Twelve South Compass Pro Stand for $52: This is made for iPads, but I"ve had no trouble using it for plenty of other tablets. It"s more travel-friendly than the Satechi above and fairly stable, but when I lift the tablet off, the back leg tends to change positions. You can angle it pretty low for sketching or keep it upright for watching movies. Unlike the Satechi, it"s not a great option for keeping the tablet upright on a mattress.
Twelve South StayGo Mini USB-C Hub for $60: This works with iPads and other tablets just fine. You can either plug it in and keep it flush with the edge of a slate or use the included cord to keep it extended. You get a USB-C port you can use for pass-through charging, a USB-A, an HDMI, and a headphone jack.
Twelve South HoverBar Duo Mount/Stand for $80: You can use this as a stand or as an arm mount, and Twelve South makes it really easy to switch between the two. That means you can easily affix your tablet to your bedside arm mount, and then put it on the stand in your home office in the morning. Both are sturdy, and the arm mount is decently adjustable. Best of all, it doesn"t wiggle around as much as the Lamicall above when you tap the screen.
Keychron K3 Pro Mechanical Bluetooth Keyboard for $94: If you want to use a third-party Bluetooth keyboard with your tablet, a cheap one (like this Logitech) will do the job perfectly. But if you"re a mechanical keyboard snob like me, this Keychron is an upgrade that"s pretty easy to tote around. You can connect it to multiple devices and switch between them quickly; the keys light up in different, configurable colors; and best of all, it delivers the clickety-clackety experience you want with a mechanical keyboard. It needs to be recharged every three to four days, but you can also use it plugged in.
Anker Nano 3 30-Watt Charging Adapter for $23: Most tablets charge at around 18 watts, so this 30-watt charger from Anker is more than capable. The plugs fold up, and it"s pretty compact. If your tablet does support faster charging—for example, the Galaxy Tab S7 FE supports 45-watt charging—then I recommend Satechi"s 108-watt three-port USB-C charger ($75). This will let you charge your phone, tablet, and laptop all off the same plug.
Update, 9/30/2021:An iFixit teardown suggests that the iPad mini"s more noticeable scrolling issue is a byproduct of how the display controller is mounted. You can read more in our coverage of their teardown.
Update, 9/28/2021: In response to our inquiry, Apple has told us that the "jelly scroll" issue on the 6th-generation iPad mini is normal behavior for LCD screens. Because these screens do refresh line by line, there is a tiny delay between when the lines at the top of the screen and lines at the bottom are refreshed. This can cause uneven scrolling issues like the ones observed on the iPad.
We maintain that this effect is noticeable on the iPad mini in a way that it is not noticeable on other 60 Hz LCD iPads we"ve tested, like the iPad Air 4 and the latest $329 iPad. There"s also a clear dividing line down the middle of the screen in portrait mode, as observed in our testing and in the video linked below—it"s not a problem isolated to the extreme edges of the display. The upshot is that the company doesn"t believe there is a hardware or software issue to "fix," and that the screen apparently is the way it is. Advertisement
Original story: Apple"s newest iPad mini was released to the general public on Friday, and over the weekend, users began to complain about a subtle scrolling problem when using the tablet in portrait mode (MacRumors has a good round-up post). The tablet appears to refresh the left and right halves of its screen at slightly different rates, creating a subtle-but-noticeable "jelly scroll" effect. The Verge"s Dieter Bohn has captured slow-motion video that demonstrates the problem.
The issue is subtle enough that we didn"t notice it when testing the mini for our review, but our review unit does indeed appear to suffer from the same problem. It"s the most noticeable when scrolling relatively slowly up and down a webpage or document—the left side of the screen seems to trail the right side by just enough that paragraphs of text appear rubbery and wobbly to an attentive eye.
In our testing, the problem does appear to affect the screen in landscape mode, where the left and right halves of the screen become the top and bottom halves of the screen. But horizontal scrolling is much less common in most apps than vertical scrolling, making the effect less obvious. Some users have reported not being able to notice the problem in landscape mode at all.
It"s not clear whether this problem is being caused by the iPad mini"s hardware, or if it"s something that Apple can fix with a software update. We"ve asked the company for comment and will update this post if we receive a response.
Small isn’t always better – in fact, we’ve been conditioned to believe that bigger is always better. When people see a bigger screen, they assume a better camera or better photos even if the camera hardware isn’t anywhere near as good. Or when you hear of a higher processor number – or more RAM for example – it’s easy to assume that this directly translates to better. So bigger, equals better, right?

After 10 days of usage, including eight (and counting) where the iPad Mini has helped me get through my current hospital stay, this is why the iPad Mini 6 is the best portable tablet for productivity. I"ve tried a few different keyboards with the iPad Mini but this is the one I"d pick every time. It has full support for all the keyboard shortcuts on iPadOS and it works better than any third-party option.
I was taken aback by how much Apple improved the latest generation of the iPad Mini. Generally, the iPad Mini has been a device that would see a combination of different parts of the rest of the iPad experience into a smorgasbord device that was part iPad, part iPhone. However, the iPad Mini 6 is different.
How so? It feels like a cohesive product in a way that Apple has never made before. Instead of just some random collection of parts, the iPad Mini deservedly received more stage time than the 9th generation iPad and the reasons are clear. This is a revamp of the complete experience and it’s more iPad Pro-Mini than just a mini iPad.
The new changes include a slightly larger 8.3-inch screen inside a body that’s virtually the same size body as the previous-generation iPad Mini. The screen uses a Liquid Retina IPS panel with scratch-resistant glass, true-tone, and a wide color gamut. Aside from the 120Hz refresh rate found on the more expensive iPad Pro, the iPad Mini display has the rest of the same hallmarks that make the iPad Pro screen so impressive for media consumption. There"s also a few stunning iPad Mini 6 colors that make this fun and quirky to use.
The design feels very 2021-esque for Apple, incorporating the same glass front and aluminum back and frame found on the new iPhone range. It’s much lighter and more pleasant than the iPad Pro, and there’s a big difference in the joy of using the iPad Mini vs the iPad Pro.
The camera bump is larger which is to be expected from the new 12MP single wide-angle camera with f/1.8 aperture and autofocus. Many people – like my late father – believe that a device with a bigger screen like the iPad must mean that it has a better camera. We’ve all been to a wedding where someone stands up with a giant iPad to take photos – the cameras themselves aren’t great but the iPad Mini 6 goes a decent way to improve this. Similarly, video recording is pretty impressive, supporting up to 4k @ 60fps, 1080p @ 240fps and with gyro-based electronic image stabilization. You won’t be buying the iPad Mini 6 for the camera, but if you happen to believe a big screen equals a better camera, this starts to go a long way to delivering on that experience. At least now those photos won"t suck anymore.
Where the iPad Mini 6 is not as good as the iPad Pro, yet still incredibly impressive in its own right, is in the processor: it’s powered by the same Apple A15 processor found in the new iPhone 13 range. Flagship performance at an incredible price, and this is very much a flagship processor that’s better than anything else at this price. The A15 can stand against any flagship Android smartphone processor, let alone the traditionally lower-specification processors used in the entry and mid-level Android tablets.
What the Apple A15 allows Apple to do, however, is create the ultimate portable productivity powerhouse. The iPad Pro isn’t the type of device that you can carry in your pocket – the iPad Mini 6 is definitely that device. Suddenly, a salesperson can have a pocketable device that has all the power of a productivity champion and doesn’t need anything else. Simply pull it out, open up a spreadsheet, presentation and do most things you’d do with the larger iPad Pro, all in a smaller, more portable form factor.
I spent a total of 6 days in the hospital, out of which the first two I used my Galaxy Z Fold 3 for all things work including sending messages, video calls, spreadsheets, viewing data reports and even writing an article. Then I had my iPad Mini delivered to me in the hospital and my workflow suddenly changed.
The form factor is made for two-handed typing but crucially, unlike the iPad Pro, the iPad Mini is small enough that Apple has kept the split keyboard option. The result is that you can fire open the split keyboard and tap away with two thumbs. For these six days, I couldn’t put the iPad Mini 6 down and I still absolutely love it. For the two days I was at home – before ending up back in this hospital – the iPad Mini still never left my side, and I would sit on the couch to use it for most of the same things I used it for while in hospital.
Thanks to an outstanding promo where Apple will offer you $200 to buy and activate the cellular version of the iPad Mini, you basically get it for almost the same price as the regular Wi-Fi version and this one contains all the 5G goodies you’d want from a connected tablet. Take it from someone who sat in a hospital bed with really bad Wi-Fi – having a connection option beyond just Wi-Fi comes in handy when you absolutely need it.
I’ve not traditionally been one to use the mobile connectivity on my iPad, but as I begin to spend more time on a train – vs driving – and as I’ve been in hospital, it’s become clear to me that it’s worth having. During my time in the hospital, I noticed that as I was moved to a different room, the cell signal rapidly changed so with the eSIM on board, I was able to swap the iPad from Verizon to T-Mobile and still remain connected. Similarly, when roaming, it’s incredibly useful to be able to just sign up for service from the iPad without needing to pay a visit to a local carrier store.
I’m a huge skeptic of Apple’s ability to create a cohesive multitasking experience that is intuitive and worth using. When iPadOS first came out, it was shocking and the iOS multitasking experience has always left a lot to be desired. This is why iPadOS 15 took me by surprise – Apple has developed a multitasking system that’s polished, refined, and ready for almost everything. More importantly, it convinced me of two other facts: with a few tweaks, Apple is ready to launch a foldable device and pertinently, Safari is a better mobile browser for professionals than Chrome. The latter is the biggest and most shocking takeaway for me after using the iPad Mini and comparing it to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3.
As an entire generalization, iOS – and therefore the early versions of iPadOS that were bigger versions of iOS – has never truly felt like it was designed for a power user. Compared to Android, iOS is inherently less featured but it’s designed that most features a user could ask for are still available. It took Apple over ten generations of the software to finally support widgets, and these still remain fairly static with a single input supported: tap. There’s no interactivity with widgets, these are more for show and displaying information than being super useful, yet they are a part of the iPad Mini experience I use a lot.
For most users, the core purpose of widgets on iPadOS will actually prove to match their use case. For me, while I do miss the interactivity of Android widgets, and the sheer breadth of options as developers get creative, my most common use case for widgets has always been to just display information. Show me what’s important and then I’ll decide if I want to activate it from there.
The thing I like most about iPadOS is multitasking. This single statement is shocking to me because of the aforementioned belief that it wasn’t very good but there are a couple of ways that Apple has done multitasking really well. First, it’s the addition of the dock, which looks very similar to the Windows dock and the pinned apps menu found on Samsung’s Fold 3. A half swipe from the bottom of the screen brings you to all your key apps, but also to the App Library. After ten plus years of the belief that no one needs an App Library, it’s nice that iPadOS and iOS have an App Library! A prominent position to the right of the dock means you’re always only a couple of taps away from any app.
The resizing of windows, how the multitasking interacts in the same way that any other window does, and the cohesion of this experience within the rest of the OS makes the multitasking experience far more useful than you might expect. Unlike the larger iPad Pro, the smaller size of the iPad Mini display scales this really well. The iPad Pro still feels like it’s missing a few things to really take advantage of the larger display, whereas the multitasking feels near perfect on the 8-inch iPad Mini.
Where the iPad Mini is setting the standard for mobile professionals is with Safari. Take it from someone who’s used the Galaxy Z Fold 3 for weeks and uses Chrome on their Mac every day: Safari on the iPad Mini is mobile browsing done right.
First, Safari supports multiple instances so you can launch two, three, four, or even more entire instances of Safari, each supporting up to 500 tabs, separate spaces, etc. I use it no differently from the browser on my Mac, except I’m on the iPad. This means you’ve got the ability to do split-screen browsing, have Safari alongside several different apps in multitasking view, and sync bookmarks, passwords, and more to the desktop version of Safari. Of course, the desktop sync only works if you also use Safari on Mac. But if Apple was to launch Safari across all platforms again – having removed it from Windows many years ago – I would actively consider switching, especially considering how much of a battery drain Chrome continues to be.
Second, Safari defaults to a desktop experience on all websites but most importantly, allows you to adjust the zoom. Unlike Chrome on Android tablets and the Galaxy Z Fold 3, which only allows me to toggle the “Request Desktop View” mode and doesn’t let me force zoom in or out, Safari lets you use the browser on the iPad – and on the iPhone for that matter – no differently to how you would on the Mac. As far as a professional experience goes, Safari is, without doubt, a much better experience than Chrome on mobile devices can offer.
Compare this experience with mobile Chrome on the Galaxy Z Fold 3 which is probably the biggest competitor that Android has to offer. Both devices offer a great multitasking experience, but Chrome on Android only works with a single instance, doesn’t support the force zoom features, and is generally a mobile browser, while Safari for the iPad Mini is basically a desktop version of Safari on the go.
Sadly no technology is perfect, and no product is perfect either. Even something painstakingly crafted to have no identifiable flaws on paper will be inherently flawed in some way, and the iPad Mini 6 has a few flaws that definitely leave me wanting.
The first is battery life. My love affair with the iPad Mini 6 is only questionable because I don’t want to put it down. Hence, the battery life proves that it’s not really all-day battery life. If you are a heavy user intending to use this as a primary portable tablet and use it excessively during the day, then you will probably need to charge it during the day.
Yet, for most people, the battery life will prove to be acceptable. It can easily last between 6 and 9 hours of screen on time and if you don’t use it at full brightness, this can increase by a further 25%. My top-line battery life while mostly reading at a low brightness was 11 hours screen time with a total battery life of 18 hours. By any phone standard, this is great battery life, but for tablet users, you might be expecting more.
Charging is fast enough, especially at faster speeds than before. The 19.3 Wh battery can be charged from empty to full in around 2 hours using the 30W charger that comes in the box. It’s mostly a consistent charging experience in terms of the correlation between battery percentage and time taken; in our testing, the iPad Mini charged to 15% in ten minutes, 60% in 50 minutes, 77% in 70 minutes, and 90% in 95 minutes. The final ten percent took a further 20 minutes, with iPadOS tapering charging speeds towards the end.
The idea here is that if you need a quick top-up, you can hit the 25% mark very quickly, the 50+% mark with ease and you won’t really need to fully charge unless overnight. Apple’s optimized battery featuring will slow things down in the final 20% if you’re charging overnight once it recognizes what time you’re likely to want to first use the iPad, but I disabled this straight away as my use case is far more varied than that, especially while reviewing.
I’m also not a huge fan of the Apple Pencil. The way it interacts with iPadOS is great for many reasons, but there are also several occasions where I’m trying to use it to scroll or browse, and it thinks I’m trying to scribble something. When the Pencil is physically attached to my iPad, it won’t display the on-screen keyboard and instead thinks I’m trying to scribble. Unlike all the actions built into the S Pen on the Galaxy Z Fold 3, Apple really hasn’t taken the concept of the Apple Pencil beyond just writing and it’s a shame as there’s a lot of potential still. Yet, it’s nice to see new additions to iPadOS try to address this slightly, with a swipe up from the bottom left corner using the pencil taking a screenshot quickly. The Apple Pencil is great, but it’s not something you absolutely need, or should even really want alongside your iPad Mini.
Unlike the latest iPhones and the larger iPad Pro, there"s no 120Hz adaptive refresh rate on the iPad Mini and many users have discovered a jelly scrolling issue where the right side of the display scrolls at a slightly different speed to the left. In my time with the iPad Mini, this has been noticeable – as has several parts of the OS where it downscales into a weird aspect ratio – but not so much as to detract from the experience. Chances are you"ll notice it, but you won"t be bothered by it.
The iPad Mini is great for so many reasons yet it also raises a big question about where the lineup goes from here. Unlike the rest of the iPad range, the Mini has seen the least refreshes and the latest generation of the iPad Mini is good enough that there’s no need for Apple to make any changes for at least a couple of years. But, what comes after that?
The technology industry has come a long way since Apple launched the first iPad Mini. Back then, 8.3-inches was considered huge and not necessarily portable. Now, you have an 8-inch display in a folding form factor on the Galaxy Z Fold 3 that fits inside your pocket. With Samsung putting so much marketing importance behind its foldable, its inevitable that Apple will need to follow.
The real question then is – what will an Apple foldable look like? Is it basically an iPad Mini that folds and can make phone calls? Is it just a larger version of the iPhone 13 Pro Max? I for one, hope it’s the former as the iPad Mini basically offers the blueprint for exactly what Apple needs to do with its foldable; instead of approaching a foldable like a phone, Apple – and Samsung for that matter – should absolutely be approaching them as small tablets or computers that get smaller, vs phones that get bigger.
In a couple of years – or whenever Apple chooses to dip its toe into a foldable device – there’ll be little need for the standard iPad Mini form factor as foldable displays should have matured and become more ubiquitous. If Apple can basically package the iPad Mini experience into the Pro Max version of an iPhone, it has a winner on its hands. Support for the Apple Pencil, the incredible multitasking, and just the overall Pro experience would result in one of the best experiences you can have.
The iPad Mini 6 is the best small tablet ever made, and also the best iPad that Apple has ever made. It combines the very best of the larger iPad Pro, with the portable form factor that the rest of the iPad range is missing. As a result, you have the professional yet portable tablet you’ve always wanted.
In the meantime, the iPad Mini offers exactly this: the best portable productivity experiences that money can buy. I love my Galaxy Z Fold 3 and it will always be in my pocket, but now the iPad Mini is going to always come with me in my bag or jacket pocket. That it has made such a large impact on my life in such a short space of time says a lot about the iPad Mini: it’s so good, you won’t want to put it down.
Apple’s iPad remains one of the best tablets on the market. Apple has sold well over 350 million worldwide, and there are currently a number of different models to choose from. While these tablets are certainly well-engineered pieces of digital machinery, they are not immune to a few snags and glitches. We"ve taken a look at some of the most prevalent iPad problems in an attempt to find workable solutions for them. Sometimes it will take more than a simple reset to get your iPad back in working order.
It can be frustrating if a pixel isn’t working on your iPad. You’ll first notice this as an unresponsive dot on the display that doesn’t change, or stays black no matter what happens. Sometimes there may be more than one pixel like this.
Flashing bright, changing colors can also help reset a pixel. You can plenty of Pixel Fix videos on YouTube to run at full screen to help with this, or even find an app that does the same thing.
If the pixel is permanently dark no matter what you do, it’s dead. You cannot fix a dead pixel. If it’s a minor issue and not distracting, you can leave it. But it’s a good idea to take your iPad into an Apple Store and ask about a display replacement.
Eager to get the latest iOS/iPadOS updates and all the new features offered? You may discover that your iPad is obstinately refusing to download the update, even if it says it will or if it was scheduled to update at a specific time. Fortunately, this is usually due to not meeting specific requirements needed to update, not a permanent flaw on your iPad.
Double check to make sure your iPad is compatible with the latest versions of iPadOS. Check out our list of iPadOS 15 compatible devices and iPadOS 16 compatible devices.
Make sure you are not using a cellular data connection for your internet. The iPad will not start such a big download when on a data connection to avoid using up cell data.
You may find from time to time that your iPad screen freezes and remains unresponsive to your touch. It’s a common complaint at Apple’s support forum. The most likely culprit is a specific app, but it’s not always easy to identify which one. If it happens repeatedly, take note of what you have running and try uninstalling it to see if that solves the problem permanently. Whatever the cause, your immediate solutions to a frozen iPad screen are the same.
Try restarting your device first by pressing and holding the Power button until you see “slide to power off” on the screen, and then slide to power off. Press and hold the same button to turn it back on. You’ll know it worked when you see the Apple logo.
If the screen isn’t responding, you might need to force restart the device in which case you should press and hold the Power button and the Home button at the same time for around 10 seconds. You’ll know it worked when the Apple logo appears. For newer iPads without the Home button, press and quickly release the Volume Up button, press and quickly release the Volume Down button, and then press and hold the Power button until the device restarts.
If it stubbornly refuses to react to a restart or reset, then you’ll need to try a restore. Plug it into your computer using the cable provided. Load up iTunes on the computer, select your iPad, choose the Summary tab, and hit the Restore iPad button. This will erase your content, so you may prefer to choose Restore Backup on the Summary tab. Bear in mind that you’ll lose anything you haven’t backed up.
Try holding down the Power button and the Home button together until you see the Apple logo. For newer iPads without the Home button, press and quickly release the Volume up button, press and quickly release the Volume down button, and then press and hold the Power button until the device restarts.
Maybe the battery is just empty. Plug the iPad into the wall charger using the original cable and charger that came in the box and wait an hour before trying the first step again.
If your iPad turns on but gets stuck during startup, then plug it into your computer with iTunes running and repeat step one, except this time, don"t let go of the buttons when you see the Apple logo, keep holding them until you see the recovery mode screen. You should get the option to Restore or Update. Choose Update and it will try to reinstall iOS without wiping your data.
Some people have reported issues with plugging the iPad into the computer and booting up iTunes only to find that the iPad isn’t there. If iTunes or Finder isn’t recognizing your iPad then you can try a few things to solve the problem.
Check the battery icon on the iPad when you plug it into your computer. If it has a lightning bolt on it to denote charging or it says Not charging next to it then you know the port and the cable are working and you can move to the next solution. If it doesn’t, then try another port. If that doesn’t work, then try another cable.
(If you are running MacOS Catalina you can skip this as you"ll be using Finder to interface with your iPad.) Make sure you have the latest version of iTunes. If it’s on a PC then go to Help and then select Check for updates. If it’s on a Mac then hit the iTunes tab and select Check for updates. If you have the latest version or updating makes no difference, try the next solution.
Turn the iPad off. Turn the computer off. Turn them both back on again and plug the iPad back in. If you see a Trust this computer alert, unlock your device and tap Trust.
If you find that your iPad won’t charge when you plug it into a power adapter, there are a couple of possible reasons. If it doesn’t charge when you plug it into the computer, it may just be the port you are using, try the power adapter instead. You can see whether the USB port on your computer is charging it or not by looking at the battery icon on the iPad. If it is charging, you’ll see the lightning symbol; if not, it will say Not charging next to it. Some computer ports can’t provide enough juice to charge the iPad, and it will always charge more slowly via the computer, even if it does work.
If the cable or power adapter is not the problem and nothing else has worked, then there could be a fault with the iPad and you’ll need to contact Apple, contact the retailer where you bought it, go into an Apple Store, or take it to a third party repair shop as the culprit could be a damaged battery, or a damaged charge port, both of which are repairable.
A lot of people have trouble connecting to Wi-Fi networks with their iPads. Before you start serious troubleshooting, you should check Settings > Wi-Fi on the iPad and make sure that it is turned on. It’s also worth making sure that Wi-Fi is accessible on another device.
There’s a reason IT departments the world over tell everyone to turn a device off and on again as a first troubleshooting step — because it so often works. Try turning off your iPad and router and then turn them both on again and wait a few seconds before trying to reconnect.
Try telling the iPad to forget the network in Settings by tapping the network name and selecting forget. Turn the iPad off and on again and then reconnect to the network and re-enter the details as necessary. You can also try Settings > General > Reset > Reset network settings.
Make sure you have the latest iOS software by going to Settings > General > Software update. You should plug your iPad into the power adapter before updating. Older iPads can be updated via iTunes on the Summary tab via the Check for update option.
If your iPad still won’t connect then it’s worth checking with your ISP for help or advice. The problem could be related to your specific router. You might want to update the firmware or change the channel.
If nothing so far has worked, then you may consider trying to connect to a different Wi-Fi network with your iPad just to test if it works. If not, then it"s time to contact Apple for further help.
If you find that your iPad is not its usual zippy self and you are experiencing some lag when you navigate, you can try a couple of fixes. You may just have too many things running.
Double-tap the Home button and swipe up on each open app or game to close it. If you have a newer iPad without the Home button, then swipe up from the bottom of the Home screen and pause slightly in the middle of the screen to open the recently used apps list.
You could also just reset the iPad by holding down the Power button and the Home button simultaneously for 10 seconds. For newer iPads without the Home button, press and quickly release the Volume up button, press and quickly release the Volume down button, and then press and hold the Power button until the device restarts.
You really need at least 2GB of free space for smooth operation, so take a look in Settings > General > iPad storage and check. You may need to delete some files or uninstall some apps. Some apps take up more and more space over time, so it can even be worth uninstalling and then reinstalling an app to clear it. You may also consider going to Settings > Safari and tapping Clear history and Website data, then Clear history and Data to clear out your cache, but this will also log you out of websites you"ve signed into.
As a last resort, you might try a factory reset. This will wipe everything though, so make sure you back up first. If you do a factory reset, test the iPad without restoring a backup just to see if it runs any better. If you subsequently restore a backup and it slows down again, then you"ll know the issue is with something in the backup.
Quite a few iPad owners have been complaining about cellular data connections dropping frequently. Obviously, this will be seriously influenced by how good the coverage is in your area. If you have good coverage on the same network with your phone, but the iPad is struggling, you could try a couple of things. First, check in Settings > General > Cellular and make sure it’s on. You could also try a restart. If it continues to be a problem, go through the steps below.
A lot of iPad owners suffer from random crashes where an app spontaneously closes or the iPad suddenly restarts. You might find that this is a bigger issue on older iPads. You can try a few different things to alleviate the problem. It is quite likely to be related to specific apps, so take note of what you were doing when it crashes and see if a pattern emerges over time.
Press and hold the Power button and then slide to power off. Press and hold the button to turn it on again. You could also reset by pressing and holding the Power button and the Home button at the same time for 10 seconds. For newer iPads without Home buttons, press and quickly release the Volume up button, press and quickly release the Volume down button, and then press and hold the Power button until the device restarts. Neither of these solutions is liable to affect a permanent fix, but it may offer some relief.
Connect to Wi-Fi and go to Settings > General > Software update to ensure that your iPad has the latest software. If there’s an update available then download it and install it.
When everything is running as it usually should, your iPad should take about three hours to recharge. If you own an older model, it still would only take about four hours, at a maximum. That said, many users report that it takes much longer for their iPad to recharge fully. We have a couple of tips to try and speed up the charging process.
Make sure your iPad is updated. Infamously, iPadOS 13 caused these types of battery charging issues for many users. If it"s an issue with iPadOS, you can"t do much except live with it until Apple improves the software and releases a new version.
Check your ports and connectors. Look for any signs of damage, grime that"s blocking ports, or anything else that may be interrupting the connection. If you aren"t sure, try to find another compatible charging cable and switch it out to see if this makes a difference. Do not use an off-brand cable or charger to charge your iPad! If you are using one, stop right away and switch to a version straight from Apple.
Make sure your iPad isn"t trying to do a lot when you are charging it. Disconnect from Wi-Fi and Bluetooth or put it into Airplane mode first. Don"t use your iPad when it"s charging, and see how much this helps.
Always remember to make sure that your iPad isn"t put in a particularly hot or cold place. This can damage the battery and cause long-term problems that can"t really be fixed without a full replacement.
We completely understand how frustrating this issue can be, mainly because you likely bought the Pencil to pair specifically with your iPad. We have several solutions to try out to get the two working together again.
Make sure you have the right Apple Pencil and iPad. Compatibility issues do exist. We have a full Apple Pencil compatibility guide, and certain Apple Pencil and iPad combinations simply won"t work. Also, if you have an iPad Air 2 or earlier model, the Pencil won"t be able to work with your screen at all, although some third-party stylus models could work for you. We know, it"s confusing. But it"s important to find out what Pencil and iPad model you have to see if they can work together.
Restart your iPad and try again. When you restart, take a look at Settings and Bluetooth to make sure your Bluetooth is turned on. If you already see the Pencil as a recognized device in the Bluetooth settings, then select the information icon, and choose Forget this Device. Then try reconnecting.
A bootloop is when your device gets stuck in a cycle of turning off and turning back on; The iPad continues repeating that over and over again on a seemingly endless loop. We’ve found that these frustrating cycles tend to result from a bug in whatever app you were last trying to use. That said, there could also be a couple of other factors causing the bootloop. We have several recommendations to try out to stop the looping before you take your iPad to the Apple Store for help.
* Wait for an update. Unfortunately, bootloops are often caused by bugs in specific apps or the iPad’s current operating system. In that situation, you just need to wait for an app or OS update to be released. A recent example of this happened in June 2020, when a version of iPad iOS caused iPads to bootloop unexpectedly while working, usually around a minute or so after starting up. Apple doesn’t waste a second when it comes to releasing patches for these problems. Just keep an eye out for new updates.
* Force a manual restart, or “soft reset,” and see if it solve the problem. A manual reset is a powerful troubleshooting tool. To start the reboot, hold the Power and Home buttons down for about 10 seconds simultaneously. You don’t have to count it down; you’ll see when the reboot has started because the Apple logo will appear on the screen. Some newer iPads don’t have a Home button. For those devices, press and quickly release the Volume up button, press and quickly release the Volume down button, and then press and hold the Power button until the device restarts. If this doesn’t work, you may need to force a factory reset, unfortunately. Before resetting anything, though, may sure you back up all of your important data.
* Go into recovery mode. This feature prevents bootloops and opens the door for your iPad to fully update if your device is stuck in an infinite bootloop. Apple has a full guide, but to explain it briefly — connect your iPad to a computer; then press and release the Volume up button, the Volume down button, the Top button, and then hold the Top button as your iPad restarts. If this is completed correctly, your iPad will reboot into recovery mode. If your device has a Home button, hold the Home and Top buttons simultaneously. Continue holding them until you see that recovery screen.
Much of the new iPad Air from Apple is a known quantity. The design, screen, speakers, rear camera, and fingerprint scanner are all carried over from the 2020 model. The updated front-facing camera with Apple’s Center Stage feature can be found across the entire iPad line. It’s compatible with all the same cases, keyboard, and stylus accessories as before. And the M1 chip inside the new Air is lifted right from last year’s iPad Pro and the MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, Mac Mini, and iMac.
What’s new is that you can get that combination of features in a tablet that starts at $599. That’s now the lowest price you can get access to Apple’s impressive M1 processor, undercutting even the value-driven (and screenless) Mac Mini. You also have the option of 5G for slightly faster-than-LTE cellular speeds. Oh, and there are a couple of new colors this time around, including the fetching blue of my review unit.
New processor and 5G aside, the iPad Air remains the iPad for those looking for a nicer tablet than the base model, but don’t necessarily want to spend the cost or need all the bells and whistles of the iPad Pro. It’s got a modern design, more performance than most people will know what to do with in a tablet, and an excellent screen that works equally well in portrait or landscape orientation.
It’s not the iPad I’d recommend wholly replacing a laptop with, though it can work for certain laptop-like tasks when paired with an optional keyboard case. It’s the nicer iPad for those looking to do iPad things, like reading, watching video, playing games, taking notes, and perhaps writing the occasional email but aren’t planning on making it their only computing device.
There isn’t much to say about the design of the new iPad Air that wasn’t covered in our review of the 2020 model. It’s still an all-aluminum tablet with Apple’s current design ethos of uniform bezels and flat sides. From the front, you’d be hard-pressed to tell it apart from an 11-inch iPad Pro.
The size and weight are both comfortable for tablet tasks, including sitting on the couch and reading articles or books or taking notes with the Apple Pencil, as I like to do. It’s not quite as easy to one-hand as the 8.3-inch iPad Mini, but the tradeoff is you get considerably more screen real estate.
The Air’s 10.9-inch screen is imperceptibly smaller than the 11-inch Pro’s display, but it’s still large enough for a great movie watching experience. It does start to feel cramped when you’re using it for laptop-like work, with split screen and multitasking modes. If you’re considering trading in your 13-inch laptop for an iPad, I’d strongly recommend going with the 12.9-inch Pro model.
What you don’t get on the Air is the Pro’s ProMotion variable refresh rate display, nor do you get the 12.9-inch model’s brighter Mini LED screen. Most people won’t miss ProMotion — it can make scrolling animations smoother, but if you’re reading static text or watching video, it won’t make a difference — and it’s not worth the $200 cost to upgrade to an iPad Pro for it alone. Similarly, while it would have been great to have the Mini LED display here, the current 500 nit screen is still plenty bright enough to use the iPad Air in bright rooms or even outdoors, although if you watch a lot of movies you might miss the inky blacks offered on the larger Pro.
Like the prior model and the latest iPad Mini, the new Air doesn’t have the Pro’s Face ID facial recognition system for logins and authentication, instead using a fingerprint scanner built into the sleep / wake button. The scanner works well — it’s easy to set up and is quick to recognize my fingerprint — but it’s not nearly as convenient or seamless as just looking at the iPad and swiping on the screen, as you can do with the iPad Pro.
Apple didn’t bring down the Pro’s Thunderbolt 4 USB-C port to the Air this year, but it did upgrade the speed of the port to 10Gbps, or twice as fast as the 2020 models so you transfer files from external storage a bit faster or plug in to an up to 6K external display. Sadly, Apple also didn’t add back a 3.5mm headphone jack — the only iPad in the lineup with that port at this point is the base model.
The base model Air also still comes with 64GB of storage, which is starting to feel a bit stingy at its $600 price point. It doesn’t take much to fill up that amount of space, especially if you use the iPad for gaming (Genshin Impact consumes 14GB on its own, for example), and if you’re going to be keeping this iPad for multiple years as most people do, you’ll probably have to do a bit of storage management at some point. Upgrading to 256GB of storage is a steep $150, bringing the price up to $749, or dangerously close to the iPad Pro, which offers 128GB of storage at its $799 base price.
In my testing, Center Stage is hit or miss — when I have the iPad Air on my desk in a keyboard case, it would zoom in uncomfortably close to my face and tilt my camera at an angle. This happened in both FaceTime and Zoom calls in various rooms. When I picked up the iPad and walked around with it, Center Stage did a much better job keeping my face level. But since the majority of video calls I make are when I’m seated at a desk, I eventually had to turn it off. Center Stage is a neat trick, but it doesn’t make up for the placement of the front-facing camera on the side of the screen when you’re using the tablet in landscape mode, an ongoing annoyance across the iPad line.
The main upgrade this year is the jump from the A14 chip in the 2020 model to the M1 chip.
