Such is the case with the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The two-row that arrived a few months ago offers the option to have another screen for the front passenger, which is exclusive for the most expensive Grand Cherokee Summit Reserve.

The said passenger screen will be available on the 2022 Grand Cherokee L as well, but a rumor from Mopar Insiders is telling us that it will become optional to other trim levels.

According to Mopar Insiders, the front passenger screen will become optional for 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L Limited, Overland, and Summit models. It will carry the RJA option code and is said to be priced at $1,095. However, that doesn"t seem to be the case as of date.

Of note, we checked Jeep"s 2022 configurator but the front passenger screen is only available for the Summit Reserve of both two- and three-row Cherokees. No option has been added for the said Limited, Overland, and Summit models at the time of this writing.

The front passenger screen measures 10.25 inches and has four main techie functions. It can serve as a "Co-Pilot" for navigation and device management, for entertainment (via HDMI), Amazon"s Fire TV for Auto, and as a display for the exterior cameras. The HDMI plug allows smartphone mirroring and other UConnect 5 system functions.

Launched in September 1998, the redesigned WJ 1999 Grand Cherokee shared just 127 parts with its predecessor (mostly fasteners). The European model was coded WG. The spare tire was relocated from the side of the cargo compartment to under the floor. (Like the 1998MY ZJ, the rear tailgate glass opened separately.) The two heavy pushrod V8 engines were replaced by Chrysler"s then-new PowerTech. The new V8 engine produced less torque than the old pushrods, but was lighter, offered better fuel economy, and provided similar on-road performance figures (the 23-US-gallon (87 l; 19 imp gal) fuel tank was replaced with one of a 20.5-US-gallon (78 l; 17.1 imp gal) capacity). A notable feature available in this generation was the automatic four-wheel drive option called New Venture Gear NV247 transfer case. This two-speed chain-driven transfer case uses a gerotor, a clutch pack coupled to a hydraulic pump, to transfer torque between the front and rear axles. The transfer case contains three modes, 4-All Time, Neutral, and 4-Lo. In 4-All Time, 100% of torque is sent to the rear axle in normal conditions. If the rear axle starts spinning at a higher rate than the front axle, hydraulic pressure builds up in the gerotor and causes the clutch pack to progressively transfer torque to the front axle until both axles return to the same speed. A neutral mode is intended for towing the vehicle. In 4-Lo, the front and rear axles are locked together through a 2.72 reduction gear ratio. The NV247 transfer case is mated to front and rear axles containing Jeep"s Vari-Lok differentials. Vari-Lok differentials also use a gerotor to transfer torque between the wheels on either side of the axle. The major advantage of Quadra-Drive was that the combined transfer case and progressive locking differentials in each axle could automatically control traction between all four wheels. However, only the center differential could be permanently locked, and only in 4Lo. The Quadra-Trac II system included the NV247 transfer case with the standard open front and rear differentials.

The automatic transmission in the WJ was notable. It included three planetary gear sets rather than the two normally used in a four-speed automatic. This gave it six theoretical speeds, and it would have been the first six-speed transmission ever produced in volume, but it was programmed to only use five of these ratios. Four were used for upshifts, with a different second gear for downshifts. Although five of the six ratios were used, Chrysler decided to call it a "4-speed automatic". For MY 2001, the programming was changed to make use of all six ratios. Rather than have six forward gears, the transmission was programmed to act as a five-speed with the alternate second gear for downshifts. The rpm at 70 miles per hour (110 km/h) on a 545RFE is 2,000 rpm, 200 rpm less than the 45RFE programming. 1999 and 2000 model-year WJ owners can have their 45RFE transmission"s programming flashed to enable the extra gear as both transmissions are physically the same. (Must purchase new PCM and ABS module and program them with a fake VIN to make this work.) The 42RE 4-speed automatic remained the transmission for the inline 6 engine. It had slight changes from the previous model Grand Cherokee.

The interior was also completely redesigned. The redesign allowed for larger rear doors, and more space for rear passengers. Controls for various items like headlights, heated seats, and rear wiper were moved to more convenient locations. The electronic Vehicle Information center was moved from below the radio to above the windshield and was standard on 2000–2004 models. Limited models included automatic dual-zone climate control. A 10-CD changer was also available with the Infinity Audio package.

The Grand Cherokee received a minor facelift for 2004 including round fog lamps, a lower front fascia, and a new body color-matched inset grille design.

The WK Grand Cherokee debuted in 2004 for the 2005 model year at the 2004 New York International Auto Show with available Quadra-Drive II four-wheel drive, rear-seat DVD player and optional 5.7-liter Hemi V8. The Selec Terrain system, first introduced on the Jeep Grand Cherokee (WK2), will also be available on the Grand Cherokee WL, and is now controlled via a toggle switch in the center console. The Quadra Lift air suspension system is available only with the Quadra-Drive II system.

For the first time, the Grand Cherokee will offer a 950-watt, nineteen-speaker McIntosh premium amplified surround sound audio system, replacing the previous 825-watt, eighteen-speaker Harman Kardon system on the Grand Cherokee WK2. Other new features available for the first time on a Grand Cherokee include massaging front seats, a rear seat view camera, a surround-view (360-degree) camera system, a rear view camera digital mirror, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration, Qi-compatible wireless device charging, heated and ventilated second-row seats, second-row captain"s chairs, twenty-one inch tires and wheels, Level 2 semi-autonomous driving technology, and power-folding second and third-row seats.

Originally scheduled to be released for the 2021 model year, but delayed until 2022, The two-row Grand Cherokee is available in seven trim levels: Laredo, Altitude, Limited, Overland, Trailhawk, Summit, and Summit Reserve (the off-road oriented Trailhawk trim will not be available on the long wheelbase Grand Cherokee L model). Compared to the previous generation two-row Grand Cherokee, the total passenger volume increases by 4.1 cubic feet (120 L), while cargo space is up 1.4 cubic feet (40 L).

Engine choices are carried over from the previous generation Grand Cherokee (WK2), with two naturally-aspirated units, but also added is turbocharged gasoline/electric plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain. The base engine on all Grand Cherokees is the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 gasoline engine, producing 290 hp (294 PS; 216 kW), and 257 lb⋅ft (348 N⋅m; 36 kg⋅m) of torque.

The optional engine, available on all Grand Cherokee trims aside from the Laredo, Altitude, and Limited, is the 5.7-liter HEMI V8 gasoline engine with the Multi Displacement System (MDS) cylinder deactivation system, producing 360 horsepower (365 PS; 268 kW), and 390 lb⋅ft (529 N⋅m; 54 kg⋅m) of torque. When equipped with the 5.7-liter HEMI V8 gasoline engine, the all-new Grand Cherokee has a maximum towing capacity of 7,200 pounds (3,300 kg). All engines, including the Plug In Hybrid (PHEV) powertrain, are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, with Stellantis manufacturing the 850RE transmission for the 3.6-liter model, and ZF manufacturing the 8HP70 transmission for the 5.7-liter model (all transmissions are based on the design of the ZF 8HP transmission, and use a new rotary controller in the center console). In addition to rear-wheel-drive, three different four-wheel-drive systems are available, and use a new Selec-Terrain toggle controller (the Quadra Drive II four-wheel-drive system also features the Quadra-Lift air suspension system. The Quadra-Lift system can raise or lower the vehicle to different heights, and is standard on all Trailhawk models.

It is available with an optional 4xe plug-in hybrid available on the Limited, Trailhawk, Overland, Summit, and Summit Reserve trim levels. It uses an electrically assisted 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder making a total of 375 hp (380 PS; 280 kW) and 470 lb⋅ft (637 N⋅m; 65 kg⋅m). The 17 kWh battery pack provides an estimated 25 miles (40 km) of range when running solely on electric power. It has the ability to tow 6,000 pounds (2,722 kg).

At the 2022 New York International Auto Show (NYIAS), Jeep introduced the 2022 Grand Cherokee 4xe High Altitude Edition Package. Available on both Summmit and Summit Reserve trims, the High Altitude Edition Package features dark exterior accents, unique 21-inch wheels. Following introduction on the Grand Cherokee 4xe, the High Altitude Edition Package will also be available on the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L in both Summit and Summit Reserve trims. A new exterior color, Hydro Blue Pearlcoat, will also be available on most Grand Cherokee, Grand Cherokee 4xe, and Grand Cherokee L models.

In 2010, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) launched an investigation into 1993–2004 model year Jeep Grand Cherokees which involves the fuel tanks of these SUVs. In moderate- to high-energy rear collisions, the fuel tank (located behind the rear axle) could be compromised structurally, resulting in fuel leakage and fire. The NHTSA claims that it has reports of 157 deaths resulting from fires caused by Grand Cherokees crashing. Also affected are 2002–2007 Jeep Liberty models and 1986–2001 Jeep Cherokee models, which totals about 5.1 million affected vehicles.

In June 2013, Chrysler Corporation responded to the recall, agreeing to recall 2.7 million Jeeps, though eliminating both the 1986–2001 Jeep Cherokee (XJ) and 1999–2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee WJ from the recall. The recall will include 2.7 million 1993–1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee ZJ and 2002–2007 Jeep Liberty KJ vehicles.

Two weeks prior to this recall, Chrysler Corporation claimed that the affected Jeep vehicles were safe, citing the vehicles" rates of fatal rear-impact crashes involving fire as well as their compliance with then-current requirements of FMVSS standard No. 301,trailer hitch onto the rear bumpers of the vehicles that will protect the fuel tank if the vehicle is involved in a rear impact. If an affected vehicle is not currently equipped with a trailer hitch, one will be installed onto it, and older Jeep and non-factory aftermarket trailer hitches will be replaced with one from Chrysler Corporation. Despite the recall, the market for these Jeep vehicles has not suffered.

In May 2013 there was a recall of WKs with the Quadra-Drive II and Quadra-Trac II systems. This followed cases of cars rolling away due to the transfer case moving into neutral of its own accord, and the owner not having applied the parking brake. The recall revised the Final Drive Control Module (FDCM) software. However, following the recall there were widespread reports on enthusiast web sites

In April 2016, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) ordered a recall of 2014 and 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokees and other cars that use an electronic gear shifter because it sometimes does not go into (or does not remain in) the park position, despite the operator"s best intentions. Consumers reported that they put the car in park and left the engine running, and then were surprised when the car rolled away under power.

The final fix was Safety Recall S27 / NHTSA 16V-240, a software update that adds an "auto park" feature that will automatically put the vehicle in park if the driver"s door is opened and the driver seatbelt is unlatched while the vehicle is stopped or moving slowly.

In July 2017, 2012–14 Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs were recalled due to possible alternator failure. If the alternator fails, the vehicle may stall and/or if the alternator has a short circuit, a fire may occur.

On February 25, 2022, Stellantis and Jeep issued a stop-sale order for 2022 Grand Cherokee and Grand Cherokee L models in dealership inventory. The order was issued after it was discovered that the Radio Frequency Hub Module (RFHM) would cause some vehicles to not recognize the key fob, rendering the vehicles unable to start. This would require the vehicles to be towed to the dealership. This order only affected a "limited number of vehicles", and parts were shipped to dealerships as soon as they became available.

Back in October, MoparInsiders released several details on the scheduled Chinese-exclusive 2022 Jeep® Grand Commander(K8) that were in the pipeline for later this year. We are now getting our first look at this revision thanks to a series of photos that were released by the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and discovered by the website AutoHome China.

The 2022 Jeep Grand Commander looks to follow more in the footsteps of the recently released 2022 Jeep Compass than a completely unique look. From the front, you can see a completely new front fascia that incorporates all-new LED headlamps with a new daytime running light (DRL) pattern, a new set of LED fog lamps that sit higher up on the fascia, and a bigger Jeep-trademark seven-slot grille with grille patterns taken from the all-new three-row 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L.

From the side profile, the 2022 version looks almost identical to the current model. New wheel designs are expected across the lineup, however, from the declaration photos from the Chinese government, it appears that the Grand Commander could feature the gold American flag medallion next to the Grand Commander text on the front doors, similar to the Grand Cherokee L,Wagoneer, and Grand Wagoneer models. This detail is absent in the 3/4 front images and would be strange considering the vehicles are made in China and not available in the United States.

The declaration photos also show us that Jeep will be expanding the lineup for the 2022 model year. While the three-row Grand Commander already offers a Longitude, Limited, Overland, and Summit model range, it appears thatthe popular darkened themed Night Eagle trim (knownas the Altitude in North America), will be joining the lineup as well.

The rear of the vehicle is the most changed part of the exterior. Giving the vehicle a mixed design of Grand Wagoneer and Grand Cherokee L, the new 2022 Jeep Grand Commander features a new taillight design that moves across the back of the vehicle, before stopping about midway to displace the Grand Commander text. The taillamp design itself looks to pull heavy influence from the new Grand Wagoneer models.

Looking at the lower rear fascia, we see that the exhaust tips no longer are attached at the bottom of the rear fascia but come through the rear fascia about 4 to 6-inches higher than the current model. This makes the rear look more upscale and more in line with the new Grand Cherokee L model. A silver accent plate is located at the lower portion of the bumper, helping to enhance the profile of the vehicle’s rear styling treatment.

Inside, we have been told that the new Grand Commander will feature an all-new instrument panel design that features a full digital 10-inch gauge cluster similar to the Grand Cherokee L. The Grand Commander will also share a new 10.1-inch Uconnect 5 infotainment touchscreen media center as well as a rotary-dial shifter instead of the conventional shifter like the current model, again pulling elements from the new Grand Cherokee and Wagoneer models.

Under the hood, the Commander and Grand Commander will continue to be powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four-cylinder engine with two power outputs. However, the focus will shift to an updated version of the current electrified powertrain. The Commander PHEV (plug-in hybrid electric vehicle) will have more range than the current version and will help as the Chinese marketplace pushes electric vehicles more than ever. The Commander PHEV will still use the 2.0-liter turbocharged four as a generator to recharge the bigger battery packs when an outlet isn’t available.

While the PHEV version of the Commander is front-wheel-drive only, it will not get the 4xe designation that the rest of the Jeep brand has been adapting to with its four-wheel-drive electrified offerings. This means that the Grand Commander will only get the “e” badging placed on its rear liftgate signally it is a PHEV.

The Commander name seems to be making the news pretty often these days. A few weeks after the 2022 Commander was unveiled for South America, Jeep premiered the facelifted Grand Commander for China during the 2021 Chengdu Auto Show. As a reminder, the Grand Commander was revealed in 2018 as a 7-seater SUV exclusively available in the Chinese market, with a plug-in hybrid version following in 2019. While the models are still relatively young, Jeep decided it was time for a refresh.

Despite the common name and the similarities, the two 7-seater SUVs are not mechanically related. The South American Commande is sharing the Small Wide platform with the Compass, while the Chinese Grand Commander is sharing the Compact Wide platform with the Cherokee, and is thus longer, wider and taller.

The most visible change in the updated Grand Commander can be found in the front where the headlights have grown larger and are now fully merging with Jeep’s seven-slot grille. Also new is the redesigned bumper featuring more complex intakes. The profile looks identical besides the new design for the wheels. However, the new bumpers have slightly increased the length to 4,895 mm (192.7 inches).

At the back, the taillights are now extended towards the center with LED graphics similar to those of the US-market Grand Wagoneer. There is also Grand Commander lettering under the chrome bar and a slightly different rear bumper with the decorative exhaust pipes mounted higher than before. Jeep designers didn’t mess with the interior, which retains the centrally mounted infotainment touchscreen and the three-row, seven-seat layout.

The updated version of the Grand Commander is available with a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine producing 231 hp (172 kW / 234 PS) in the FWD guise or 262 hp (195 kW / 265 PS) in the AWD variant. Chinese buyers can also opt for the PHEV which comes with the same 2.0-liter engine plus two electric motors and a 13 kWh battery allowing a combined range of 900 km (560 miles). All versions come standard with a nine-speed automatic gearbox.

Pricing ranges from 239,800 yuan ($37,113) to 329,800 ($51,044) for the ICE-powered Grand Commander, and starts from 309,800 yuan ($47,949) for the Grand Commander PHEV. Just like its predecessor, we don’t expect the Jeep Grand Commander to be sold outside China.

Last week, Jeep teased a new concept vehicle set to be revealed at the Shanghai Auto Show this month, but now images of the mysterious concept have allegedly leaked courtesy of Allpar showing what appears to be a three-row crossover based on the Jeep Cherokee. While the images are low-res, the leak gives us a clearer look at the design inspiration for the new Jeep crossover concept, which is apparently known as the K8 Hybrid and will target the Chinese market. Allpar reports that the K8 will be built on the same CUSW platform as the Cherokee, but it"s noticeably longer and taller than its Cherokee counterpart, adopting a 5+2 setup seating up to seven passengers. Design cues have been taken from the new Jeep Compass and Grand Cherokee, but the K8 Hybrid still shares similarities with the current Cherokee such as similar headlights and taillights, so we could be looking at a three-row Cherokee with an extended wheelbase. Technical specifications for the K8 haven"t been leaked, but sources claim that it will be fitted with

the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid"s 16 kWh hybrid powertrain. Jeep already sells the Cherokee in China, so offering a stretched hybrid version would make sense in an emissions-conscious market where cabin space is an important factor for customers. Whether the Jeep K8 Hybrid will only be available exclusively in China remains to be seen, but Allpar speculates that it could pave the way for a Chrysler-badged three-row SUV in the USA. The most common normal color depths you"ll see are 8-bit (256 colors), 16-bit (65,536 colors), and 24-bit (16.7 million colors) modes. True color (or 24-bit color) is the most frequently used mode as computers have attained sufficient levels to work efficiently at this color depth. Speed vs Color LCD monitors struggle with color and speed. Color on an LCD has three layers of colored dots that make up the final pixel. To display a color, a current is applied to each color layer to generate the desired intensity that results in the final color. The problem is that to get the colors, the current must move the crystals on and off to the desired intensity levels. This transition from the on-to-off state is called the response time. For most screens, it rates around 8 to 12 milliseconds. The problem with response time becomes apparent when LCD monitors display motion or video. With a high response time for transitions from off-to-on states, pixels that should have transitioned to the new color levels trail the signal and result in an effect called motion blurring. This phenomenon isn"t an issue if the monitor displays applications such as productivity software. However, with high-speed video and certain video games, it can be jarring. Because consumers demanded faster screens, many manufacturers reduced the number of levels each color-pixel renders. This reduction in intensity levels allows the response times to drop and has the drawback of reducing the overall range of colors that the screens support.

LCD panels, the number of levels that each color can render is used instead. For example, 24-bit or true color is comprised of three colors, each with eight bits of color. Mathematically, this is represented as: 2^8 x 2^8 x 2^8 = 256 x 256 x 256 = 16,777,216 High-speed LCD monitors typically reduce the number of bits for each color to 6 instead of the standard 8. This 6-bit color generates fewer colors than 8-bit, as we see when we do the math: 2^6 x 2^6 x 2^6 = 64 x 64 x 64 = 262,144 This reduction is noticeable to the human eye. To get around this problem, device manufacturers employ a technique called dithering, where nearby pixels use slightly varying shades of color that trick the human eye into perceiving the desired color even though it isn"t truly that color. A color newspaper photo is a good way to see this effect in practice. In print, the effect is called halftones. Using this technique, the manufacturers claim to achieve a color depth close to that of the true color displays. Why multiply groups of three? For computer displays, the RGB colorspace dominates. Which means that, for 8-bit color, the final image you see on the screen is a composite of one of 256 shades each of red, blue, and green. Most consumer displays don"t say how many they use. Instead, they tend to list the number of colors they support.
