The mid-size crossover and SUV segment is swollen with entries, but the three-row Kia Sorento is one worth considering. With seating for up to seven passengers, the Sorento offers the utility of the larger V-6-powered Telluride, with better fuel economy and multiple powertrain configurations. The front-drive SUV comes standard with a 191-hp inline-four with an eight-speed automatic transmission; however, we think buyers ought to consider adding all-wheel drive and upgrading to the Sorento"s 281-hp turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Kia also offers the Sorento with a 227-hp hybrid powertrain that returns an EPA-estimated 37 mpg combined and a 261-hp plug-in hybrid (PHEV) setup with an estimated 32 miles of battery-electric driving range. The Sorento offers plentiful passenger space for its size, and even includes available niceties such as heated and cooled front and second-row seating.

The Sorento pulls into 2023 without any major changes to its massive lineup. All models now come standard with blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert while the S trim now comes with a wireless smartphone charging pad. The mid-range EX trim gets an eight-way power-adjustable passenger"s seat and a frameless rearview mirror; the upscale SX now comes with a 12.3-inch digital gauge display, power-folding exterior mirrors, and rain-sensing windshield wipers. Kia has discontinued the Sorento Hybrid S base model and added a fully loaded Hybrid SX-P trim with standard all-wheel drive, 17-inch wheels, leather seating, and captain"s chairs for the second row. The Hybrid EX gets a little love too, with an eight-way power front-passenger seat and a frameless rearview mirror. For 2023, the Sorento PHEV comes strictly in SX-Prestige trim. The PHEV SX-Prestige has all the fixings, including retractable rear-door sunshades, a 115-volt inverter, and an estimated 32 miles of electric driving range.

We like the EX hybrid. It"s pricier than the base Sorento, but it comes standard with the turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder hybrid powertrain that"s more powerful than the base nonhybrid offering. It also has nicer amenities than the trims below it, including leatherette upholstery, heated front seats, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, remote start, and snazzier styling such as 17-inch wheels and black exterior accents.

The Sorento has a wide selection of engine options and is available with front- or all-wheel drive. A 191-hp 2.5-liter inline-four-cylinder engine is standard and a 281-hp turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder is available too. Both pair with an eight-speed automatic transmission and the hybrid model uses a six-speed automatic. We drove a top-of-the-line SX trim with the turbo four and appreciated its noticeable thrust, but we wish the powertrain felt more responsive off the line. The same model delivered poised handling, a nicely isolated ride, and firm brake-pedal feedback. The eco-friendly Sorento hybrid features a turbo 1.6-liter four-cylinder gas engine and an electric motor that work together to generate 227 horsepower. The all-wheel-drive Sorento plug-in hybrid features the same engine and transmission as the lesser hybrid, but in this application, the powertrain makes a combined 261 horsepower courtesy of a more powerful electric motor.

Although the Kia Sorento won"t move mountains, its marginal towing capacity could prove helpful in some situations. The maximum towing capacity for the Sorento is 3500 pounds when equipped with the turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and the optional towing package. Avoid the towing package or opt for the base naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine and that figure falls to 2000 pounds. Though the Sorento can"t match the V-6-powered Kia Telluride"s 5000-pound tow rating, it still can haul a couple of jet skis or small farm animals—depending on your lifestyle.

The EPA estimates the Sorento returns up to 24 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway when equipped with the base 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine. The more powerful turbocharged 2.5-liter four nets EPA ratings of 22 mpg city and 29 mpg highway. The hybrid Sorento HEV is the most fuel-efficient with estimates of 39 mpg city and 35 mpg highway. The plug-in hybrid has a combined rating of 79 MPGe. Drive the Sorento PHEV in its Hybrid mode and the plug-in model earns EPA-estimated fuel economy figures of 35 mpg city and 33 mpg highway. That said, the PHEV can travel up to a manufacturer-estimated 32 miles on electricity alone with a full charge of its battery. On our 75-mph highway fuel-economy route, which is part of our extensive testing regimen, a Sorento EX Hybrid achieved 31 mpg—4 mpg short of its EPA estimate. The Sorento PHEV returned 25 mpg while in Hybrid mode, 8 mpg off its EPA estimate. For more information about the Sorento"s fuel economy, visit the EPA"s website.

Inside, the Sorento has an attractive layout, nice materials, and solid build quality. The dashboard can be outfitted with a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and a 10.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The rest of the design blends rhombus-shaped air vents integrated ambient lighting and intricately stitched surfaces on the door panels and seat inserts. A variety of cubby storage spots and cupholders also fill out the console. Along with a standard third row, its second-row bench can be swapped for a pair of captain"s chairs. Compared with the larger Telluride, the Sorento"s far-back seats aren"t comfortable for adults, and we only managed to fit two carry-on suitcases in the cargo area—two fewer than the Telluride.

The Sorento comes standard with an 8.0-inch touchscreen or an optional 10.3-inch touchscreen. A wireless charging pad is optional, as is a 12-speaker Bose sound system. A rear-seat entertainment system with a touchscreen mounted on the back of each front seat is also optional.

The Sorento enjoys a roster of standard and optional driver-assistance technology. For more information about the Kia"s crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites. Key safety features include:Standard forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking

With its top engine the Sorento can hustle quickly to highway speeds, but more ordinary base models and Hybrids have average acceleration. We give the Sorento a 6 for performance, with a point above average for its generally admirable ride quality.

So far, the base Sorento with the 191-hp, 2.5-liter inline-4 hasn’t been made available for test drives. We have tested both the hybrid and the turbo-4, and can recommend either of them over the base model, but with mixed impressions.

The 2.5-liter turbo-4 has an alert feel thanks to its 281 hp and 311 lb-ft of torque, but its drive modes must be dialed out of Normal and into Sport to fully appreciate its ability. In Normal mode, the turbo-4’s companion transmission takes too long to recognize the need for merging or passing speed. Press the throttle and it pauses, thinks, then toggles down a gear or two. In Sport mode it lingers in lower gears longer and responds almost instantly to paddle shifts and moderate pedal pressure; it erases the CVT-like rubberband effect of Normal mode.

Acceleration’s brisk, but the Sorento weighs at least 3,979 pounds, and up to 4,065 pounds in top trims, with the added weight of all-wheel drive with torque-vectoring and center locking differential for optimum traction—coupled with all-season tires on wheels as large as 20 inches.

We like speed, but the Sorento Hybrid suits its mission better. The Hybrid generates middling acceleration and excellent fuel economy from a 1.6-liter turbo-4 paired to hybrid batteries and electric motors that make 227 hp. It’s paired to the 8-speed dual-clutch automatic, with similar driving behavior, and a little more grumbling from under the hood while it churns out city fuel economy in the low 40-mpg range.

The coming plug-in hybrid Sorento may be the best choice of all, but we’ll need a test drive to see if its 13.8-kwh battery and 66.9-kw electric motor can deliver on a promised 30 miles of all-electric driving.

Where the Sorento earns unqualified praise is its ride. Whether it’s shod with mild-mannered 17-inch wheels on the Hybrid or 20-inchers on the SX X-Line, the Sorento’s strut and multi-link suspension has been tuned for good compliance, with a fair amount of suspension noise. It’s better at quelling high-speed, long-duration ride motions than it is at smothering low-speed obstacles like potholes, but those are observations, not quibbles. Better steering feel would be nice, but the Sorento’s steering weight and precise response works well enough for the kind of driving for which it’s tailored.

Of all the technology you’re considering right now, the only one that sounds any real alarm bells is that of the double-clutch transmission. It’s not that Kia’s version of the DCT is worse than many others – nor is it the worst of the lot – but there have been complaints over the operation and lifespan of these units generally. Sometimes the fault is a software glitch, but in other DCTs – particularly the dry-clutch variety – the problems are mechanical and can lead to catastrophic failures.

With that said, it’s also true that Kia in Australia offers a fantastic factory warranty, so you should have no worries for at least the first seven years. It’s also the case that Kia Australia takes its reputation very seriously and is one of the better companies when it comes to sorting out faults and problems with its products. We’re pretty big fans here at Carsguide of the current Toyota hybrid technology, and it’s looking like the new Kluger Hybrid will be just as popular as Toyota’s other hybrid offerings. Perhaps more so as the non-hybrid Kluger can be thirsty.

As for the requirement for premium ULP, when you consider that the Kluger Hybrid will, around the city and suburbs where most of them will spend the vast majority of their lives, use about two thirds of the fuel of the V6 Kluger (maybe even a bit less than that) then the extra cost per litre is more than compensated for by the reduced cost per kilometre. And in case you were worried about Toyota’s hybrid tech, the new Kluger Hybrid comes with up to 10 years of warranty on the battery-pack provided the vehicle is serviced correctly and inspected once a year.

The other thing you might consider is the next-size-down Toyota hybrid, the RAV4. This is quite a spacious vehicle these days and offers excellent fuel efficiency and driveability. It’s cheaper than the Kluger, too. Definitely worth a look. Overall, the broader view is that a petrol hybrid vehicle is more future-proof than a conventional turbo-diesel.

That’s a significant jump and the price increase is largely due to the elimination of the entry-level S trim, which started at $34,090. Now, the base model is the Sorento Hybrid EX and it begins at $36,590. That makes it $700 more expensive than last year’s EX.

To help soften the blow, the 2023 Sorento Hybrid EX now features additional equipment including an eight-way power passenger seat and a frameless rearview mirror. Buyers will also find SynTex artificial leather seats, a 4.3-inch display in the instrument cluster, and a 10.25-inch infotainment system with GPS navigation as well as wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility.

Other highlights include a 10-way power driver’s seat, heated front seats, second-row captain’s chairs, and a split-folding third-row. They’re joined by an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a dual-zone automatic climate control system, and a wireless smartphone charger.

Putting the interior aside, the Sorento Hybrid EX has a stylish exterior with LED headlights, a GT-Line front bumper, and a black mesh grille. Buyers will also find an acoustic windshield and 17-inch alloy wheels.

On the safety front, there’s Blind Spot Collision Avoidance Assist, Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Avoidance Assist, Lane Keep Assist, Lane Departure Warning, and Lane Following Assist. They’re joined by Safe Exit Assist, High Beam Assist, and Rear Occupant Alert.

That’s just the tip of the iceberg as other standard safety features include Highway Driving Assist, Intelligent Speed Limit Assist, and Forward Collision Avoidance Assist with Junction Turning as well as Pedestrian and Cyclist Detection. Rounding out the highlights are Parking Distance Warning and Navigation-Based Smart Cruise Control with Stop and Go.

The other big news for 2023 is the addition of a range-topping SX-P trim, which begins at $42,390. It features a lightly revised exterior with larger 19-inch alloy wheels, LED taillights, and rain-sensing windshield wipers.

Bigger changes occur in the cabin as buyers will find perforated leather front seats with heating and ventilation as well as 14-way power adjustment on the driver’s side and 10-way power adjustment on the passenger’s side. Other niceties include a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a heated steering wheel, HomeLink, and a Bose premium audio system.

The range-topper also comes with a handful of extra safety features including a Surround View Monitor, a Blind Spot View Monitor, and Rear Parking Collision Avoidance.

Regardless of which trim is selected, both models have a hybridized powertrain that consists of a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine, an electric motor, and a 1.0 kWh battery pack. This setup gives the crossover a combined output of 227 hp (169 kW / 230 PS) and 258 lb-ft (349 Nm) of torque. Front-wheel drive comes standard, but all-wheel drive is available on the EX and standard on the range-topping SX-P.

The redesigned Sorento has more technology and active safety features than before, but it’s not as well-rounded as the previous generation. Though quicker and more fuel-efficient, it has regressed in terms of ride comfort and overall refinement compared with the outgoing model. As such, it remains stuck in the middle of the pack of midsized three-row SUVs that have approachable prices.

The Sorento’s standard 191-hp, four-cylinder engine is neither energetic nor quiet. But the nearly $39,000 midlevel EX AWD trim we tested has a 281-hp, turbocharged four-cylinder—which essentially replaces the previous V6—with lots of oomph. With that engine, it returned an impressive 25 mpg overall. The EX comes mated to an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission that transmits vibrations when creeping along in stop-and-go traffic, but shifts smoothly and quickly at speed. The turbo-four enables the Sorento to sprint from 0 to 60 mph in just 6.5 seconds, which is about 1.5 seconds quicker than its predecessor managed with the V6—impressive stuff.
