There is a guide for the 15" MacBook Pro that illustrates replacing the matte screen. In fact, you can pretty much follow that guide all the way through for the 17" as well. There are a few differences but not enough to trip you up.

The Intel model has the screen glued in! It will take a good heat gun suction cups and plastic picks to carefully pry the display off, often times the screen will fracture in the process so be careful you control the flying glass and razor sharp edges! Wear eye protection & proper gloves.

Just like the early 2020 Intel version of the MacBook Air Core i7 Apple offered TrueTone which requires new screens to be calibrated! So while a new screen will work you will loose brightness control & FaceTime camera functions. Even a new complete display assembly faces this issue as well. This is a special calibration program not available to the public only via Apples Global Services private network.

Now while not a solution today, Apple has made it clear they will be opening up a parts program for their gear. We don’t know when as well what will be covered time wise, or if access to the calibration tool will be offered.

Every MacBook Pro with Liquid Retina XDR display undergoes a state-of-the-art factory display calibration process on the assembly line to ensure the accuracy of the P3 wide color panel and the individual backlight LEDs. In addition, the factory calibration process enables sophisticated built-in algorithms to accurately reproduce a variety of color spaces used by media workflows today, including sRGB, BT.601, BT.709, and even P3-ST.2084 (HDR).

The factory display calibration process lets MacBook Pro users enjoy an exceptional viewing experience right out of the box. If your workflow requires custom calibration, you can measure your display, then fine-tune the calibration.

You can use a set of QuickTime movie test patterns from Apple to evaluate the calibration of your Liquid Retina XDR display. These appropriately color-tagged SDR and HDR references allow you to use your in-house spectroradiometer to measure and verify the color primaries/secondaries and luminance, including the electro-optical transfer function (EOTF).

In Display Settings, choose the reference mode that you want to fine-tune from the Presets pop-up menu. You should choose the same reference mode that matches the test pattern and reference mode used when measuring your display.

Check the manufacturer’s specifications to determine your spectroradiometer’s tolerance. Observed variance may result from any of the following conditions:

It used to be that if your screen cracked on your laptop, you"d just replace the LCD and be done with it. That unfortunately is no longer the case. With the introduction of the Unibody Macbook and Macbook pro models, Apple changed the design of the display assembly. Now, there is a glass panel assembly that is placed on top of the LCD panel. The good news is that it is possible to crack just the glass panel and save yourself some money. The bad news is that it is also possible to crack both the glass panel and the LCD.

If you take your Macbook to most repair companies with a cracked display, they"ll undoubtedly say you need to replace the entire display assembly and charge you some astronomical figure. It really isn"t an extremely difficult procedure to do yourself however, and so we"ve created the guide below to show you just how to do it.

To begin, use a heat gun to loosen the double sided adhesive strip that holds the glass in place. Use caution, and heat the glass in short segments as over heating can cause damage to your LCD.With the glass heated, place a strong suction cup on the glass and pull up and away from the glass.

If heated properly, you"ll be able to see a small gap between the glass and the and the rest of the display. Insert a thin piece of plastic such as a credit card or movie rental card into the opening. Work the piece of plastic in enough where it can be slid along the seem of the glass. This will break the adhesive strip holding the glass in place.Repeat this procedure along the entire edge of the glass assembly. When you meet resistance, heat the area and repeat.

Once you have used a hair dryer or heat gun to warm the adhesive strip, use a strong suction cup to begin to separate the glass from the display assembly.

Caution: When pulling up on the suction cup, you should have to exert some force. However, do not apply excessive force as this could crack your glass or LCD. When you meet resistance, heat the area and repeat. At a certain point the glass will easily come free from the rest of the display assembly. Set the glass to the side on a clean, dust free, surface.

Next, remove 4 philips head screws ( 2 on either side ) holding the LCD to the display frame. Then remove the 2 philips head screws at the bottom of the display.

To reassemble, place the LCD back in the frame, and insert the LVDS cable backwards through the opening in the bottom the display frame. Then pull the cable through the opening. You can use a plastic pry tool to assist you in routing the cable. Be very careful with this cable as it can be easily damaged.

Line the bottom of the LCD up with the bottom frame, and slide it into the groove in the bottom frame. Then make sure the 6 screw holes are properly aligned. Replace the 6 philip head screws.

Thanks GladB, I was able to get a good hold sans "crazy glue" ;-) As I mentioned....I am a professional so looking good is ALWAYS IMPORTANT! My claim to fame is....."if it looks right!!! it is right!!!" I live by this Motto! ;-) Thanks for your response though!ReplyUpvote

I was able to do replacement successfully. (I am a puter professional ;-)..) But I have had issues with the lens replacement glue sticking well...Has anyone had the same issue and do you have a correct and pro solution? Btw....I cleaned and replaced lens correctly and new lens glue typically does not stick with any "perminance". Please advise?0

Thanks for the tutorial! But if it is too difficult, you can always sell your mac for spares to companies like www.macbookcrackedscreen.co.uk and use the money towards the purchase of a brand new Macbook :)0

I do this all day long for school districts. An opening tool like a isesame (a small metal strip) works great. As your work around the screen use guitar picks to keep the LCD to readhering (sic) to the tape. If you don"t have a plastic tool for the cable, try a small wooden kitchen probe.

I have this very thin pry tool I use. It"s even thinner than a butter knife. Helps through the heating process, but do not use any major pressure. If you are not sure what you are doing, take it to a pro http://www.callnerds.com/portland/0

Thank you very much. The LVDS cable went out on my Pro, so when i purchase a replacement tomorrow and it gets here next week, I will be using your wonderful guide.0

I broke the glass cover of my MacBook, so I ordered a replacement from PowerBookMedic.com (poor service, by the way). I tried to lift the cover using a suction cup. The cover did not come loose at the bezel, but instead it shivered into a gazillion of small parts. Removing it from the bezel was a biiiig PITA. I also used a heat gun to soften the sticky tape that held the shards on the bezel. Not good for the display...

Consumers can locate a new replacement for the screen or LCD panel on their Apple MacBook Pro. It is also possible for you to swap the screen or panel themselves with the proper accessories. Keep in mind that different screens or LCD panels used by the MacBook Pro will depend upon the model; many affordable options are available on eBay.

MacBook Pro - These are the original MacBook Pros made from 2006 to 2012. They come in three sizes: 13-inch, 15-inch, and 17-inch measured diagonally from the top-left to bottom-right corners. The model name, MacBook Pro, is written on the bezel beneath the screen, and the power button is located on the upper right corner of the chassis. Depending on the type of damage, it is possible to repair these Macs by replacing only the glass panel or LCD. In some cases, both panels need to be replaced to display properly.

MacBook Pro with Retina Display - The 13-inch and 15-inch Apple MacBook Pro Retina models were introduced in 2012 and feature much greater resolution displays and more powerful hardware than their predecessors. Retina Macs can be identified by their thinner chassis, lack of the name on the screen bezel, and the placement of the power button on the keyboard instead of on the chassis. If the screen on the Retina model is damaged, the entire display assembly must be replaced.

If your Mac"s screen is not performing as intended, there are a few symptoms that indicate that critical damage has occurred. Many Apple computers feature a glass panel atop an LCD panel, both of which may undergo damage. When damage occurs requiring screen replacement, a simple search on eBay will help you find what you need. Some common repairable issues include:

Cracks - These are some of the most easily identifiable forms of display damage. Cracks, similar to those seen in a broken windshield, are the result of blunt force damage to the glass of the MacBook. They can occur after the laptop has been dropped or banged. Cracks are easily observable whether the machine is powered on or off.

Distorted image - Visual anomalies include lines, unusual coloration, and blotches of black or distorted colors on an otherwise clear image on the screen. These distortions may occur after the device has undergone physical damage and can only be seen when the Mac is powered on. If you have a distorted image and cracks, it is possible that both panels of your MacBook are damaged.

Black display - If your Apple MacBook"s screen is totally black, it can be more difficult to determine the cause. While damage to the display is a definite possibility, this can also be caused by other hardware issues, such as a power supply failure or problems with software.

Removing dirt from inside a MacBook Pro screen is something you can do yourself, but requires a delicate touch because it involves disassembling the screen. Whether or not you should do this yourself depends on your familiarity with computer hardware and how much dirt is behind the screen. Unless you have access to a dust-free "clean room," there is very good chance that dust will be trapped behind the glass after you have finished.

Disconnect the power adapter from the MacBook. Clean the outside of the MacBook with a dry, lint-free cloth to ensure that none of the dust or dirt on the outside will get beneath the glass when you disassemble it.

Remove the three screws beside the trackpad with a Philips screwdriver. Set them aside. Keep each set of screws separate from the others and make a note of their location.

Look for five cables that connect the display to the MacBook. These are the iSight cable, inverter cable, display cable, an Airport (Wi-Fi) cable and Bluetooth cable. Each cable has a connector attaching it to the MacBook.

Grasp each cable connector with needle nose pliers and pull them from the MacBook. Pull the connectors in a straight line without twisting or turning them and without pulling on the wires. Make a note of where the cable connectors were attached to the Macbook.

Remove the four screws that attach the display to the hinges using a star-shaped Torx T6 screwdriver. Note that there are two types of screws used here, fully threaded and partially threaded. Ensure you make a note of their locations.

Reheat the glass as needed when the credit card meets resistance, then continue working the credit card between the frame and the glass until the glass is free from the adhesive.

Reassemble the MacBook using the steps in this article in reverse order. Refer to the notes you made to ensure that the screws are replaced in their proper location and the wires are reconnected to the right adapters.

Why not? I think it"s better to be safe than sorry a screen protector of good quality is a safeguard and believe me the moshI protector is awesome expensive but awesome do not get a cheap one that leaves tonnes of bubbles moshI is the only protector I"d use or nothing at all ,but if you care for your Mac retina than you shouldn"t have an issue for scratches in the first place ,never wip before blowing the dust 2, liquid screen cleaner and 3 a very soft screen cloth that"s used for camera lenses then I"d say you don"t need a screen protector if you follow those steps .cheers.pick your poison and you don"t lose quality of the retina that"s noticeable that"s well over exaggerated trust me the quality is the same.

Macbook Pro Retina LCD replacement. One of the Mac repair many Mac owners would not want to do. Such a replacement may be needed due to a cracked LCD caused usually by accidental drops. The repair is expensive. What is worse still is that there are varying prices and options presented by different Mac repairers. Repairs can range from $400 to $1000, depending on the quality of the LCD, the skills of the technician replacing your screen, whether you get the LCD replacement from independent repairers or with Apple Authorised Service Providers, and whether the LCD is an an OEM part, or original Apple part.

In this article, we will show you the different kinds of LCD replacements available and how to decide which kind to go for if your Macbook Pro Retina LCD is spoilt. Let us first understand the construction of a Macbook Pro Retina LCD assembly. These kinds of LCD assembly are used in the Macbook Pro Retina 13″ and 15″ from 2012 – 2016, as well as the Macbook 12″ with Retina display.

There are 3 kinds of LCD replacements in the market – 1. OEM inner LCD replacement, 2.OEM LCD assembly replacement, and 3.original LCD assembly replacement . The image below shows the construction of the Macbook Pro Retina LCD. The Macbook Pro LCD assembly actually consists of 3 separate components – the Macbook Pro top aluminium cover, a backlight and a LCD panel. See the picture below.

In a situation where the LCD is not badly cracked, an OEM inner LCD replacement can be done. In this kind of repair, only the outer LCD panel is changed. The cracked LCD panel heated and loosened from the strong LCD sticky tape that adheres the LCD panel to the aluminium cover. A replacement LCD is then glued and assembled back. No matter what your repair shop says, such repairs will always use OEM LCD screens manufactured by third parties. Some of these third parties may be companies manufacturing for Apple, but they are strictly considered non-original, though the resolution is the same as the original and the colour reproduction is quite similar. Such a repair requires an experienced technician with fine micro-motor skills, as any puncture of the backlight by the cracked glass shards of the LCD might result in imperfections to the finished replacement. Any puncture of the backlight will be exhibited as white light streaks when the LCD is turned on.

These kind of LCD assembly replacements comes with an OEM LCD panel pre-assembled onto the aluminium covers. The covers are usually sourced from Macs with spoilt LCD panels. The LCD panels are removed from the old Macbook Po Retina LCD assemblies, and are replaced with new OEM LCDs.

It is suitable for customers who want to have new aluminium covers as their Mac has very badly dented and unsightly aluminium covers, or that their Macs have very badly cracked or shattered LCDs. The prices are higher than OEM inner LCD replacements, and depending on where the repairer sources their parts from, such parts also might suffer the same issues as inner LCD replacements, namely colour and brightness variation as well as light leak issues. We have observed that some of these LCDs have light leak from the Facetime cameras, resulting in purple tinges in the photos or videos being taken with the Facetime cameras. Some unethical repair shops pose off such reassembled LCD assemblies as original Apple LCD assemblies to earn higher margins.

These are the best type of replacements. Original Apple LCD assembly replacements are new, untampered with, and has the exact colour gamut , brightness and resolution of the Retina LCDs that comes with Macbook Pro Retina that are sold in Apple stores. These assemblies are from Apple’s factories and have protective films on the front and back of the LCD assembly.

Notice that such assemblies comes with serial numbers, barcodes, quality control stickers (Gamma PASS), and protective plastic coverings for the LCD cable. They also come with new rubber pads that adheres to the inner LCD hinge.

There are also some original Macbook Pro Retina LCD assemblies that do not come with such stickers. LCD assemblies that do not come with serial number stickers might also be original Apple parts, except that they are procured from different sources which we are not at liberty to reveal.

So how do can we tell if the LCD panel replaced by a Mac repairer is original or not? There are 3 ways you can tell if the LCD assembly a shop offers you is original. The price, whether there are serial number stickers and protective plastic caps for the LCD and WiFi cables, the brightness adjustment and automatic brightness sensors.

Price is not the most accurate indicator, but a low price definitely means the LCD replacement is a re-assembled part, even if they replace the entire aluminium cover. Original Macbook Pro Retina 13-inch assemblies typically costs $660 – $750. Original Macbook Pro Retina 15-inch LCD assemblies typically ranges from $750 – $850.

Shops that do replacements at $750 for a 13-inch and $850 for a 15-inch might be a ripoff, but any repair shop that offers an original brand new Apple Macbook Pro 13-inch LCD assembly at a price lower than $660 might be replacing a re-assembled OEM LCD assembly. The cover is probably not brand new but looks as good as new, and the inner LCD itself is an OEM part. That said, Apple Authorised Service Providers do replacements at around $1,000, so any shop that offers a lower price would already be a good deal in a sense.

Original Apple Retina LCD assemblies may not come with such labels and plastic caps, but those that do have them, especially when all the mentioned parts are present, are most likely original.

The brightness of OEM LCDs tend to be brighter than the original LCDs even at the lowest brightness setting. Brightness adjustments of original LCDs are very minute whereas for OEM LCDs, the brightness will suddenly change from very visible to totally dark, when the brightness is at the lowest visible setting. OEM LCDs may also not adjust the brightness of the LCD quickly even when the automatic brightness setting is set in the System Preferences>Displays>Automatically adjust brightness. One way to test whether a screen is original or not would be to cover the entire Facetime camera with your hand. The brightness of Original Apple LCDs will swiftly dim once the sensor right beside the Facetime camera is covered up.

We know of repair shops who do not tell their customers the LCDs they are replacing are OEM parts. In fact some shops only have OEM LCD inner replacement services or OEM LCD assemblies. Do be careful when choosing a LCD replacement for your Macbook Pro Retina.
