MacBook laptops from Apple are some of the most beautiful and well designed – not to mention powerful, but just like everything else man-made they aren’t impervious to accidental drops, dings, and damage.

Thanks to the fact that they are made using high-quality construction materials (especially milled aluminum) they feel indestructible in the hand, but those gorgeous retina displays have the potential to pop and spiderweb just like any other screen out there.

Unlike most laptop computer repairs, the retina display on the MacBook is very unique, and as a result much more expensive to service. Lenovo, HP, Dell and all major OEM for PCs will utilize the same display across hundreds of models, and even that display is used across multiple years of laptops.

If you are unlucky enough to have a damaged screen, chances are pretty good you started to look into how much does it cost to replace a MacBook screen at the Apple Store – and the odds are pretty good you had a tough time hammering down concrete figures without bringing your computer into a store and having someone from the Genius Bar have a look. Although there are multiple parts in a display assembly, you may not need to replace all of them to get your computer fully working again. Knowing the basic parts that are required to complete your MacBook screen repair will help you select the correct repair for your needs.

When the computer is open, the image is displayed on the LCD panel which is the part of the screen you can touch. The LCD panel is the most commonly broken part on a MacBook Pro screen. If you have a cracked screen, you will most likely need an LCD replacement.

You will likely need to replace the entire display assembly if there are any bends or dents on the corners of your display. The full display assembly includes the LCD panel, the back housing where the Apple logo is, the clutch cover along the bottom of the screen where it says “MacBook Pro”, and the hinges.

The clutch cover is the part of the MacBook that runs along the bottom of the screen and says “MacBook Pro” on it. Sometimes, I see clutch covers that are cracked or broken, but the LCD panel itself is working fine. This means that if the computer works perfectly and the entire screen is visible and working, but there is a crack along the bottom of the screen in the part that says “MacBook Pro”, you just need a clutch cover replacement rather than an LCD replacement.

The MacBook Pro camera is not known for having issues. If the camera does stop responding, the issue is most likely with the cables that connect to the camera, or the logic board inside your computer. Sometimes though, the cameras will fail and require replacement. Unfortunately with the way these MacBook Pros are assembled, you usually have to replace the LCD panel when you replace the camera.

On older model Macs from the 2006-2012 era, the hinges connecting the display to the computer sometimes cracked or broke, causing the display to not stay up properly. This was much rarer on the newer MacBook Pros, but it can happen. Some models required an entire display replacement in order to replace the hinges, while others allowed the hinges to be replaced separately. Because Apple has started routing cables through the hinges, usually the entire display assembly had to be replaced if there are issues with the hinges.

Some things to consider when looking for a shop to complete a screen repair on a MacBook Pro include the number of years the shop has been in business, the quality of its work, and the price they charge for the service. With so many repair shops to choose from, doing your research can help you find the best possible option for your needs.

What is the shop’s policy on data privacy? Make sure you’re comfortable with how your personal information will be treated before you give them your business. Some repairs require the technician to log in to your computer during the repair process, while other repairs do not.

Choose a computer repair shop that you feel good about after researching your options. A little effort upfront can save you a lot of hassle later on when you need your MacBook screen repaired.

MacScreenRepair.com – If you are looking for someone to trust with your Mac’s screen repair, I believe that I am a great choice! I offer fast trunaround, quality work, and affordable pricing.

Rossmanngroup – I have known the owner (Louise) since we were both newbies in the repair space. His shop provides great work. They are currently based in New York but moving to Texas soon.

TCRS – I have asked for Tim’s help on logic board repairs many times over the past decade. He does not necessarily specialize in screen repair, but his shop is a great choice if you need logic board-level repairs. They are based in SoCal and they have a great reputation.

If you have a MacBook Pro that is not covered under AppleCare+, you will spend between $575 and $900 repairing your screen through Apple. There are a couple of different ways that the display repair is billed, so the price you are quoted will vary, but these are the standard quotes. Note that each damage tier is added to by a labor charge, which is usually $100. So a display repair for a 13″ MacBook Pro is usually about $480 + a $100 labor charge. If you were to take your MacBook Pro to a different repair shop, the price could be significantly lower or higher depending on the shop you go to.

Tier 1 Accidental Damage does not usually cover the display. It is for other parts that might have been accidentally damaged like the touchpad getting cracked or the fingerprint sensor on the keyboard being damaged. Tier one is usually quoted at $280 + a labor charge at the Apple store, although I have heard it quoted as low as $230 +labor.

Tier 3 Accidental Damage covers the display as well as other components that are damaged, as long as the logic board is still working properly. This tier is usually $825-1000 +labor at the Apple Store.

When you buy your computer, you are given the option to purchase AppleCare+. AppleCare+ does partially cover the cost of repairing a cracked screen on a MacBook Pro. If you decide to purchase AppleCare+ and crack your screen, the total for the repair will be $99.

I don’t recommend that beginners or intermediate-level technicians attempt to replace the LCD on a MacBook Pro. It’s best to start practicing with bad screens before moving on to repairs like this. LCDs are delicate, and you can cause all kinds of problems during the repair, like scratching backlight sheets or ripping cables under the LCD panel.

The display assembly replacement is a lot easier and can be completed by somebody with some technical repair experience. Apple has a self-repair program that covers the A2338 and A2485 models of MacBook Pro. You can read about the program and get links in my 2020 M1 MacBook Pro screen replacement guide. The self-repair program is a great way to save money on the A2338 and A2485 models of MacBook Pro.

I will say that I have seen a lot of damaged screens when people attempt to repair the LCD panel on a MacBook Pro themselves. Normally, the damage is not fixable and you have to then replace the entire display assembly.

If you are experienced enough to complete the repair, you can find the panels on public sites like iFixit, eBay, Amazon, etc. As a shop, you will probably want to work with your vendor to get panels that have a guarantee so you can hold them in stock. The price for panels usually ranges from around $250 to about $550 for the newest model. Generally, the panels decrease in price with time, but sometimes if an LCD panel is not used frequently by apple, they will become rare and cost more over time for new ones.

he cost to replace a 13″ MacBook Pro screen is $329-$549 for most modern models. The A1706, A1708, and A1989 models are $329 for the screen repair. The A2159, A2251, and A2289 models are $429. The A2338 model is $429 for the LCD or $549 for the entire display.

You can repair a MacBook Air Screen yourself with the right tools, but it’s a moderately difficult repair. Unless you have some experience in repairing electronics, I don’t recommend trying to do it yourself.

Apple will replace the MacBook screen for free if there are no cracks or physical damage present, but the laptop must be under warranty or AppleCare+. Sometimes screens will stop working on their own, and these types of problems will be covered under your warranty.

Apple charges between $575 and $900 to replace most MacBook Pro screens if it is not under warranty. If you have AppleCare+, the cost to replace the screen through Apple is $99.

This is a great question to discuss with the shop you are thinking of doing the repair. Most of the time the answer is yes, it is worth repairing a MacBook Pro screen if the MacBook Pro is useful to you. The cost of the repair usually decreases with time, so older MacBook Pros will cost less to repair than newer MacBook Pros.

AppleCare+ generally does not cover a cracked screen completely. Rather it covers all but $99 of the screen replacement service. If there is liquid damage involved, then the charge is $299.

Apple MacBook screens are a high-quality and very reliable product. Most of the time, they won’t go wrong for no reason unless they have been suffered from physical impacts or exposed to liquid.  You can easily notice a physical-damaged MacBook screen such as a cracked screen. You can see the image as well as the cracks. In this situation, you definitely need a MacBook screen replacement.

Other display issues such as a Mac black screen or dim images are harder to diagnose, as the screen itself and the video chip on the logic board would equally contribute to the symptoms. If your MacBook screen has the following symptoms, you need professional advice before replacing the screen.

We can repair the faulty components for you to lower your repair bill. This type of MacBook screen repair will cost $100 to $200, depending on the MacBook models.

There are two types of MacBook Pro screens: retina screen and non-retina screen. A MacBook Pro manufactured in 2012 or before comes with a non-retina screen. The models include A1278, A1286 and A1297. A MacBook Pro manufactured in 2012 onwards comes with a retina screen. The models include A1425, A1502, A1398, A1706, A1707, A1708, A1989, A1990, A2141, A2159, A2171.

If you have a retina screen, we can replace the broken or burned screen cable. Please note that this type of screen repair will only apply to MacBook models A1425, A1502 and A1398. The screen cables in the retina screen manufactured in 2016 onwards are not replaceable.

There are two types of MacBook Air screens: retina screen and non-retina screen. A MacBook Pro manufactured in 2017 or before comes with a non-retina screen. The models include A1369, A1370, A1465 and A1466. A MacBook Air manufactured in 2018 onwards comes with a retina screen. The models include A1932 and A2179.

If you have a non-retina MacBook Air screen, we can replace the broken or burned screen cable, faulty webcam or faulty antenna at a low cost without replacing the whole screen assembly.

When you need to replace the MacBook screen, you may need to make a decision between using an Apple original screen or a cheaper third-party screen. We compare an Apple original screen with a third-party screen side by side shown in the following photo to help you better understand the differences.

The above two MacBook Pro A1708 were manufactured in 2017. Both MacBooks use the same background picture and set the brightness to maximum. The screen on the right-hand side is an Apple original screen; the one on the left-hand side is a third-party screen purchased online. You can tell the differences straightforward by the quality of the images. Here we discuss the technical details.

A MacBook screen consists of two major components, an LCD panel and a strip of LED lights called backlights. The LCD panel creates the image. The LED lights illuminate the image from behind the LCD panel. There are significant differences between an original Apple screen and a third-party screen as outlined here:

1. Backlight purity. Apple uses high-quality LEDs as backlight sources. The backlight is pure white. On the other hand, the backlight of the third-party screen is bluish. The bluish backlight degrades the vivid picture dramatically.

2. Backlight brightness. Even after eight years, Apple’s high-quality LEDs provide brighter lights and remain near the same brightness level. Low-quality LEDs not only produce bluish light but also have brightness degradation problems. The brightness of some third-party screens may only maintain half of the original brightness level after a year of use.

3. Photo sharpness. The Apple original screen produces a much sharper image thanks to the high quality of the LCD panel, as you can see on the right-hand side of the above photo.

A few MacBook users have reported a potentially serious issue with Apple’s M1 MacBooks. Stories of cracked LCD screens on Apple’s M1 MacBook Air and M1 MacBook Pro, which launched in November 2020, have appeared in several places online.

Discussion threads about this problem popped up back in July 2021 on Apple’s Support Community and Reddit, with multiple users reporting similar incidents. These people opened up their laptop lids to find a cracked screen, black lines, and discoloration. The reason for the MacBook cracked screens still isn’t clear, with these folks reporting normal routine usage and no external damage whatsoever.

“I bought a MacBook Air M1 6 months ago and the screen cracked for no apparent reason. I left my computer on the top of my desk during the night and the next day I opened it the screen had two small cracks on the right which damaged the functioning of the screen. I contacted an authorized Apple center which told me Apple warranty would not cover it as it is a contact point crack; as if I have left something the size of a rice berry between the screen and the keyboard. It is absurd as I have nothing like it on my desk and the computer was properly closed as usual and didn’t move the whole night.”

Based on these reports, there is no single apparent cause for the cracks. Users have reported no external damage, pressure, or force applied to their device. A probable cause for the cracks could be debris present between the screen and Mac’s body while the screen was shut. This could have caused the crack in the screen, especially if the owner forcefully shut the laptop lid.

A cracked screen from debris is always a possibility with laptops, given their portable nature. However, it seems that the exact culprit is too small for affected users to have seen or noticed. This seems plausible since Apple has previously warned MacBook owners not to attach webcam covers to their laptops—since the cover creates an additional gap between the screen and the body, it may cause cracks.

Another speculation on the cause of the cracks is the frame of the MacBook. It is possible that the frame holding the screen is too weak to properly safeguard it from the torque force experienced when it’s closed or carried around.

However, we think this is unlikely, as the design of the current M1 MacBook Air and Pro is the same as the previous generation. We haven’t seen any widespread complaints of any screen-cracking issues in that generation, so the chance of it only happening on the new model is low.

Unless the damage is minor, a cracked screen will likely result in a dead screen, rendering your device unusable. As such, you’ll want to get it repaired quickly. Your best bet is to go to an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Repair Center for a MacBook screen replacement or device replacement.

Some people have gotten lucky and were offered a free repair or replacement of their system. However, Apple support has told most victims of this issue that they are responsible, so the damage is not covered by the machine’s warranty. Charges vary between $400 and $800 for a new LCD panel installation.

If your Mac is covered under AppleCare+, the cost should be substantially less. A cracked screen with AppleCare+ currently costs $99 to repair. AppleCare also covers two incidents of accidental damage, which should include this specific issue.

AppleCare+ extends the included coverage to three years from one year, though you can also add onto your AppleCare+ coverage if needed. It includes two physical damage repairs every 12 months, with an additional charge of $99 for replacing the screen or outside the laptop.

AppleCare+ currently costs $199 for the M1 MacBook Air and $249 for the M1 MacBook Pro M1. If you compare this to your initial investment of at least $1,000 (depending on which MacBook you’ve purchased), it’s not too bad. In addition, this plan can save money in the long run if you’re particularly accident-prone. We would recommend purchasing protection if it fits your budget, especially if you can’t afford to pay for repairs.

Apple hasn’t released an official statement on the matter, nor has it introduced a repair or replacement program for affected Macs. Hopefully, Apple will soon acknowledge the issue and the cause behind it, along with a cheaper repair program for users affected by the random screen cracks. It’s already possible to see if your Mac has been recalled for some reason, which includes special cases like this.

Bursor & Fisher regarding the M1 MacBook cracked screens. Currently, Apple hasn’t posted any specific guidance on the issue, but that might change with the outcome of this lawsuit.

It’s a smart idea to keep your device clean and free of dust. Dust that accumulates on or in your MacBook can cause various issues, such as unexpected shutdowns, excessive fan noise, poor performance, and more. Thus, keeping your device clean and free from dust is vital to it running properly.

See how to remove dust from your MacBook or iMac for a guide on keeping your device clean. Otherwise, you should always avoid putting anything on your laptop’s keyboard, such as coins or your keys. It’s all too easy to slam your laptop’s screen and forget that something was under it.

An unknown issue is causing M1 MacBook screens to crack and, currently, there is no known fix apart from getting the screen replaced. If you happen to face the issue, your best bet is to take your system to an Apple Store and get it fixed. We hope Apple will publicly address the issue soon.

There are times when your MacBook Pro might be in need of screen repair. This can be due to different reasons and no one is ever happy when things break – whether it be an unintentional accident or due to some sort of malfunction.

Any laptop has the potential to fail and your MacBook Pro is no exception. Some small repairs can be fixed up in a matter of minutes while other issues might take longer and cost quite a bit of money.

One MacBook Pro repair that may seem complicated but is actually pretty doable on your own, is a screen replacement. This type of repair may sound intimidating but once you know the correct steps to complete the job, it’s actually pretty doable.

If you’re lucky, you may never have to replace your MacBook Pro screen. Under normal circumstances, these screens are really quite durable and long-lasting and are meant to withstand a bit of wear and tear over the life of your computer.

First of all, Apple admitted that the 2016-2017 MacBook Pro models have the ‘Flexgate’ display problem and it was only two years later that the issue was revealed to the public. The display problem most likely won’t affect the use, but it doesn’t look good.

Meanwhile, accidents and heavy use do happen, unfortunately, and this can lead to your screen becoming damaged to an extent that it would be in need of repair.

The cause of most screen breaks is an accident. This could be something like dropping your laptop off of a table or desk or even accidentally hitting the screen with some sort of blunt object. Instances like these typically lead to a crack or multiple cracks in the glass that make up the screen.

Screens can also become blemished and scratched from steady use. Damage to the screen resulting from this type of daily wear and tear will build up over time and eventually cause your screen to look cloudy or scratched in appearance both when you are using it and when you look at the screen while the computer is powered down or in sleep mode.

If you’re like me, any small damage, crack, or faulty spots on your computer screen is not acceptable. I always want to get things fixed up and near perfect when they break.

Whether you have a small crack in your screen, a couple of large ones that make it almost impossible to see, or the screen is just scratched and blemished from a few years of steady use, a replacement screen is an easy option to make your laptop seem new once again.

If you attempt to complete the screen replacement on your own, you could risk voiding this warranty which is definitely an unwanted option in case anything more major happens during the warranty period.

The Apple Care Program is an option when you purchase your MacBook Pro. This program costs some money upfront but comes in really useful in case of an accident to your screen or any other part of your computer.

If your screen becomes damaged or faulty you can take it into the Apple Store and have them fix it up quickly and correctly without having to worry about it yourself.

If you did not purchase your MacBook from Apple there still might be warranty programs in place from the provider. Be sure to call the business or location where you purchased your MacBook to see if they can offer the fix under any sort of warranty or if they have suggestions. They might not, but it is always good to check in before undertaking the repair yourself.

In reality, it is not that complicated of a process and you should be able to accomplish the task on your own with the right instruction and a few common tools.

If you are uncomfortable with the idea of trying to fix your screen, take it to a professional, but if you want to try it yourself, follow the steps below.

You’ll want to get everything in order before diving into this project so be sure to set up an area to work that is free of any obstructions, get all of your tools and materials in order, and clean the area of anything and everything that might be a source of dust or dirt.

The materials you need for this repair are: your MacBook Pro, the replacement screen (you can buy from Amazon or iFixit), a hairdryer, a screen cleaning cloth, and a suction cup.

Turn on the hairdryer and heat along the edges of the screen. Keep the dryer pretty close to the screen and this will loosen the adhesive holding it on.

After you have heated the screen, attach the suction cup to the screen by pressing it firmly to the glass. Lift up slowly and firmly and your screen should come off of the computer.

Using the cleaning cloth, buff, and polish both the display surface underneath the old screen and the new screen to be installed. Make sure to clean up any fingerprints and blemishes so your new screen looks new when installed.

Begin by removing the adhesive strips that surround the edge of the new screen. Heat these strips slightly with the hairdryer. Then, put the new screen in place and make sure it is correctly aligned. Press the edges of the screen with the cleaning cloth to better attach the adhesive.

Once the new screen is correctly in place, remove the plastic covering protecting the screen. Give the edges another round of heat from the hairdryer. Use the cloth the again press around the edges firmly. Your new screen is now installed!

Replacing a screen on your MacBook Pro is a repair that can be done by yourself pretty easily but should be done by a professional if your computer is under warranty or if you are uncomfortable completing the repair yourself.

The supply of these older Unibody MacBook Pro models is pretty constrained. Because the cost of a new screen is so expensive, it actually is not worth repairing with a new display. Therefore, we are currently recommending going with a used display replacement. If you request a quote, we will check to see the current pricing for different grades of used displays, and let you know what the total would be for the repair.

At EliteMacTechs, we specialize in mac screen replacement. We have been repairing Unibody MacBook Pros since they first came out in 2006. We are able to disassemble the computer and offer component-level screen repair. This means you save money and time by going through us instead of the Apple store! We only replace the component that is damaged, so if your glass is cracked but your LCD is not, replacing just the glass is all that is necessary.

If you have one of the models below, your computer has a glass panel that goes over the top of the LCD. We offer 3 services for each model. One is to replace just the glass, another to replace just the LCD, and a third to replace both the glass and the LCD. The first step is to figure out if you have just cracked glass or just a cracked LCD, or if both your glass and LCD are damaged.

Cracked GlassIf it looks like your computer has a cracked windshield (the image isn’t distorted, but there is a crack over the top), you have a damaged glass panel that needs replacement.

If the image is distorted (lines, splotches of black, etc), but the damage is not visible when you turn the computer off, you have a damaged LCD panel.

Picture this. You’re at home and drinking coffee while doing some work on your MacBook Pro. All of a sudden your cat jumps up onto your lap. This causes you to drop both your coffee andyour laptop.

The result? You now own a physically damaged MacBook Pro with a broken screen and possibly even liquid damage! This means that your MacBook Pro is now possibly rendered completely useless, and you are without a laptop.

Regardless of the reason for your broken device, most people might assume that repairing their broken screen or water damaged MacBook might be cheaper than purchasing new. Oftentimes this is not the case, and it can actually be more cost-effective to purchase a new device.

If you have a broken MacBook and bring it in to Apple for repairs, you will be charged a ridiculous amount of money to repair an out of warranty MacBook.

Rather than pay for repairs, instead, you can sell your used damaged MacBook. Use the money you would have spent to repair your device, but spend it on a brand new device!

It is good to note that there is not really such a thing as a MacBook “repair”. Instead, it is typically parts replacement. For example, if your chassis is dented on the side, they will not pull out the dent to “repair” it. Rather, your MacBook would need an entire chassis replacement. If your logic board has a liquid spill, Apple will not repair your logic board, but simply replace it.

There is no easy response regarding how much it will cost to repair an Apple MacBook, due to there being so many variations (such as model and year). Typically you can expect the smallest repair/replacement to be as low as $29, all the way up to as expensive as $849+.

This tier encompasses minor boards and assemblies. This can include replacement of the power supply board, inverter assembly, or interconnect board. It might also include enclosure parts or an LCD polarizer.

Damaging your MacBook screen can feel devastating. Even if your MacBook is still usable, it can be completely inconvenient to use, and generally spreads over time. If you have a broken screen on your MacBook then you are not alone. Screen repairs actually represent almost one-fourth of all repairs done by Apple in-store.

Whether you dropped your MacBook Air at school, have sudden pixel issues on your 12" MacBook, or dropped something on your MacBook Pro, a broken MacBook screen is an expensive repair.

Going back to the idea of repair Tiers, the cost of screen replacement is directly correlated with the Tier, but also with the year and model of your MacBook. If you choose to have your MacBook repaired at the Apple store, expect to spend between $455 and $755 to completely replace the screen.

Apple quotes repairs based on a series of tiers regarding damage and cost. For example, if you have a 13-inch MacBook Air and your child accidentally spills a glass of water on it, this would require a Tier 4 repair.

Tier 4 repairs can cost upwards of $750 or more. This is astronomical and almost 60% of the cost of a new MacBook Air. Apple is aware of this, and they train their employees to suggest forgoing a repair. Instead, they suggest purchasing a new device, while they recycle your broken MacBook free of cost.

Not all broken MacBooks occur because of an accident. Sometimes technology simply gets old. Years of use put a strain on a technological device, and natural wear and tear occur.

Age can show up in a MacBook as random shutdowns, a broken keyboard or trackpad, shortened battery lifetime, port issues, or overheating problems. These problems are all costly to fix and can even be expensive even for older models.

With older MacBooks, such as a broken 2012 MacBook Pro, Apple will often offer to recycle the device for you. The catch is that Apple will still make money off of it by recycling it, and this leaves you without a device and nothing in return.

Instead of fixing technology that will soon become obsolete, or recycling your broken or partially working device for nothing in return, you can sell your device to GoRoostr in order to purchase a new MacBook!

Instead of potentially spending hundreds of dollars to repair a broken and used MacBook, sell your MacBookfor the highest price on the market, and use the proceeds to purchase the newest model. In this case, you will not only have brand new technology, but you will also have a full warranty, and the option to purchase AppleCare+ in case an unfortunate incident happens again.

I"m just wondering, would it be cheaper to go a 3rd party to fix it? How much will it cost approximately? Will Apple be cheaper given the limited availability of the screen assembly? Can the LCD be replaced alone? The main answer I"m looking for is how much this is gonna cost me. I doubt they"re going to cover it under warranty, even though I have no idea what caused it.

Edit: For anyone thinking of helping, firstly thanks. Secondly, one of my friends had their screen replaced by apple, a late 2015 15 inch Pro model. This cost them £332, just as a guide for when deciding how much it will cost for my model. Thanks again.
