One of the most underrated full-size luxury SUVs, the Volvo XC90 is currently in its second generation version, which has shaken up the segment for the levels of safety features and modernity it offers. Available in two powertrain options, the Volvo XC90 has five colour options – Crystal White, Onyx Black, Thunder Grey, Denim Blue, Pebble Grey.
For the Malaysian market, Volvo has made the XC90 available with a dual-tone interior theme of black with walnut brown including brushed aluminium and wood inserts, which undoubtedly is an old school yet extremely premium layout.
The Volvo XC90 now gets the latest in-trend 12.3-inch full TFT instrument console which does bring some futuristic appeal to the otherwise simple cabin. The Volvo XC90 hits the sweet spot between youthful and mature appeal levels when it comes to its design. While the overall exterior design has an essence of simplicity to it, there are some features that make it a strong case when compared to the SUVs of the latest generation.

At the rear, much like all the Volvo SUVs till date, the XC 90 continues to get Christmas tree themed full LED tail lamps on the outer edges of the boot lid. The chrome garnish on the lower edge of the boot lid and dual exhaust ports do lend that final premium touch to it.

Volvo has already confirmed that the S90 will also be available with the T8 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid drivetrain already seen in the Volvo XC90 SUV. We expect an S90 hybrid to emit around 50g/km of CO2 and produce around 400bhp. It"s not on sale yet, but is likely to follow later this year.
The S90 will also be available with what Volvo calls ‘semi-autononomous’ driving capability, called Pilot Assist. This will make gentle steering inputs to keep the car in lane on the motorway at speeds up to 130km/h. Volvo describes it as “another step towards full autonomous drive”.

With a bias toward luxury, the XC90 aims to win over the upper-class buyers with high-quality interior materials and a practical max towing capacity of 5000 pounds.
The 2023 Volvo XC90 has fancy new names for its trim levels. What was formerly two trims—Momentum and Inscription—are now three: Core, Plus, and Ultimate. In an effort to transform its entire lineup into an electrified one, Volvo has eliminated its gas-only T5 and T6 engines, replacing them with four-cylinder-turbo B5 and B6 mild-hybrid powertrains. Additionally, Volvo adds three new metallic exterior colors, Bright Dusk, Platinum Grey, and Silver Dawn, while removing six previously optional paint choices. The XC90 gets new Bright and Dark exterior themes, the latter replacing any chrome or shiny trim pieces with high-gloss black parts. A new Climate package, available on Core trims only, adds a heated steering wheel, rear seats, and a headlight cleaning system. A new Lounge package, available on Ultimate trims, adds front seat backrest massaging and a Nubuck suede-like headliner. New à la carte options include a Harman Kardon audio sound system, head-up display, 20-inch wheels for Core, and 21-inch wheels for Plus trims.
Volvo allows for a decent amount of configurability when it comes to building the perfect XC90, but to find a good balance of opulence, price, and power we’d suggest starting with the Plus trim, adding the optional 295-hp B6 powertrain, and sticking with the cheaper seven-passenger bench-seat layout instead of paying the hefty price for second-row captain’s chairs. At no additional cost, the Plus trim allows for the Maroon Brown leather-and-Charcoal interior, which comes with stylish walnut trim. Standard equipment on XC90 Plus includes a 360-degree camera, 20-inch wheels, leather upholstery, and heated rear seats.
In an effort to boost efficiency, Volvo has electrified the XC90’s powertrain offerings. Although a fully-electric XC90 doesn’t exist yet, even the Core base model receives help from a 48-volt electric motor bolted to a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine for 247 horsepower of combined output. Moving up to the B6 powertrain, available on Plus and standard on Ultimate trim levels, increases output to 295 horsepower. The 455-hp T8 plug-in-hybrid XC90 Recharge is not only the most powerful of the group but also the most efficient with an EPA-rated 66 MPGe. All-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission come with every XC90, no matter the trim level or powertrain. The T8 Recharge shot to 60 mph in just 4.5 seconds at our test track. As with many vehicles in this tallish class, the Volvo leans noticeably around curves, but its steering responses are accurate and the wheel has a pleasing heft that splits the difference between feather-light and heavyweight. Our test car had the optional air suspension and provided a pleasant, insulated ride, and it handled most road situations well. Some clattering from the chassis over particularly sharp bumps betrays minor road imperfections, one of only a few grievances with the otherwise graceful XC90.
Those interested in pulling boats, trailers, and other toys should be aware not every XC90 is capable of the model’s 5000-pound max tow rating. While every XC90 with the 295-hp B6 powertrain and XC90 PHEV can pull that much, the base Core 247-hp B5 powertrain is rated for 4000 pounds. These ratings don’t depend on whether you’re driving a seven- or six-passenger XC90; it’s all about the powertrain.
With the exception of its T8 plug-in-hybrid powertrain, the XC90 achieves similar fuel-economy ratings to many of its six-cylinder competitors. The 247-hp B5 powertrain gets an EPA-estimated 22 mpg city and 28 highway, while XC90’s with the 295-hp B6 powertrain gets 20 city and 26 mpg highway ratings. The XC90 Recharge T8 gets an EPA-rated 66 MPGe and can go for as far as 36 miles on battery power according to the EPA. During our 75-mph real-world highway fuel economy test, the XC90 Recharge fell short of its EPA rating,earning just 58 MPGe and traveling 29 miles on battery power. The XC90"s interior is a masterpiece of the medium. From the attractive design to the quality of the materials, we wish there were more vehicles like this. Adults won"t be happy in the third row, despite the fact that it offers more legroom than similar rivals, but preteens can probably be persuaded, provided the journey is short. The XC90"s wide, boxy silhouette helps in the cargo-hauling department, but interior compartments aren"t as cavernous as in some competitors.
A handsome, tablet-like 9.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system is standard in all XC90s, and its operation is mostly intuitive. Every model has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability; a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot is optional. The system could be improved by adding more redundant hard buttons.

Volvos are much more fun to drive than they used to be, and the XC90 performs well. It isn"t as sporty as some of its rivals, such as the Acura MDX and Audi Q7, but it offers very respectable horsepower and acceleration. All-wheel drive is standard, and the XC90 suspension is well-tuned, so it handles well enough for most buyers. More important, its ride quality is exceptional, especially when fitted with air suspension. Unlike some others in this class, the XC90 is also offered as a plug-in hybrid, the Volvo XC90 Recharge, which we"ve reviewed separately. When it comes to design, comfort, and features, the XC90 is as good as anything in its class, including the BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz GLE, Genesis GV80, and Lincoln Aviator. The 2023 Volvo XC90 offers a choice of two powertrains, both of which use a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine updated this year with a mild-hybrid system. The base turbocharged B5 engine makes 248 horsepower, 2 hp less than last year. The turbocharged and supercharged B6 is good for 295 hp, a drop from last year"s 316 hp. Every model comes standard with a well-tuned, smooth-shifting eight-speed automatic and all-wheel drive.
Our test vehicle was equipped with the optional air suspension and adaptive dampers, and the combination insulated the cabin from bumps on broken pavement. It also kept the XC90 on an even keel through fast curves, and the precise steering was welcome on narrow lanes. Still, one wouldn"t describe the XC90 as sporty. The optional drive mode settings allow drivers to tailor various elements, including the steering effort, brake pedal action, and powertrain.
Volvo"s adaptive cruise control features a semi-autonomous steering function called Pilot Assist. It does require a hand on the wheel, but it capably and smoothly steers the car on its own — so long as the road is not too curvy. It lacks automated lane-change functionality, though, unlike the BMW X5 and the Mercedes-Benz GLE.
The 2023 Volvo XC90 B5, which has the turbocharged 2.0-liter engine with a new mild-hybrid system, carries Environmental Protection Agency estimates of 20 mpg during city driving and 28 mpg on the highway. Those are the same ratings as last year. The turbocharged and supercharged XC90 B6, which also has a new mild-hybrid system, is rated at 19/27 mpg city/highway. Overall the XC90 gets slightly better fuel economy than the more powerful Acura MDX and Lincoln Aviator.
The Volvo XC90"s interior is one of the most elegant in this class. The materials — matte-finish wood, metal trim, and knurled-edge knobs — are second to none and the leather is very soft. A digital instrument cluster is standard, though its configurability is limited.
The XC90 provides a good driving position, large windows make for clear outward visibility, and the front seats offer a comfortable level of adjustability. The second-row seats, which slide forward, backward, and recline, have adequate space for adults, but there"s less legroom than in the Mercedes-Benz GLE or the Lincoln Aviator. The seatback is split 40/20/40, so you can fold the center section to accommodate long items, such as skis. Access to the two-passenger third row is not so easy, though, and legroom there is tight. Elementary-school kids can clamber back there, but anyone older might complain. However, the XC90 is no worse in this area than similar-sized rivals.
The Volvo"s XC90"s 9-inch vertical Sensus touchscreen looks gorgeous and is relatively intuitive, but it would benefit from a few more physical controls. It"s also starting to feel a bit small for the class, as many of the XC90"s rivals, including the Acura MDX and Genesis GV80, have larger screens. This year Volvo has updated the XC90 with a new Google-based infotainment system, which is very simple to operate. The home screen contains four tiles for primary functions: audio, navigation, phone, and smartphone mirroring. Touching any of them opens up that function. A band of climate-control touchpoints lives at the bottom of the display, but it would be better if often-used controls, such as fan speed and temperature, were outside the screen. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are seamlessly integrated into the system. Navigation is standard and generally works well, except we found it strangely reluctant to get with the program when we deviated from its chosen route. Wireless device charging is included, and there are two USB ports inside the center console, two for the rear seat, but none in the third row.
The 2023 Volvo XC90 hasn"t yet been officially rated, but the very similar 2022 XC90 has the highest possible safety rating, Top Safety Pick+, from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The XC90 has not been rated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
The XC90 comes standard with a long list of active safety features. They include forward-collision warning with pedestrian/cyclist/large-animal detection and automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring with steering assist, rear cross-traffic alert with auto-braking, and adaptive cruise control with lane-centering.
The 2023 Volvo XC90 makes its case on its interior and exterior design, overall polish, and practical but not overly large size. The Genesis GV80 is one of the few competitors with an equally posh interior, but most versions seat only five. While the XC90 is pleasant to drive, especially with the more powerful B6 engine, it isn"t nearly as athletic as the high-performance variants of the BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz GLE. Those in need of a roomier third-row seat can find one in the Buick Enclave or larger SUVs, such as the Mercedes-Benz GLS or Cadillac Escalade.

make sure that you located the TFT DIM that matches the transmission type of the target car - Automatic (PRND display) or Manual (+ Gear -) on the right side of the display. Diesel/petrol fuel type of the donor car does NOT matter.

Then press DECODE CEM. We must warn you this process can take up to 24 hours(but on average it usually does not take more than 12 hours). During the whole process you can interrupt the decoding process and continue later. If you do the CEM PIN decoding then you no longer need to do it again. Thanks to this you can also make other changes in the vehicle configuration including the TFT retrofit. After this process is done you will receive an email to the account you put in in the beginning.
Then choose CAR CONFIGURATION and then “Car configuration wizard”. Then you only need to choose the “TFT retrofit” wizard. Make sure DIM is connected.
2 new fixing wires (Volvo P/N 30656697 or used) must be connected to position 7 and 8 to the white DIM connector. Keep plugging in the wires into the “body” of the connector until you can hear them click properly. Then you just place and click in the blue thingy to its place. If the wires do not sit they are supposed to the blue thingy will not stick.
Connect DiCE again, turn the ignition key to position II and open VDASH again on your computer. Go to “Car configuration wizard” and choose TFT retrofit again.
VDASH will begin to look for the newly connected TFT DIM. If all wires are correctly plugged in, the update process will begin. If not then check the connecting of the wires again using the multimeter.
Your vehicle will restart itself many times during the process and at the end you will see a picture of the vehicle, the state of fuel and more. At the very beginning the incorrect measures can be displayed, but after a short trial run it should be fixed. The kilometres will also automatically reappear.
You can change and move the clock motivesonly when the engine is running (this does not have any specific explanation). The designated motive is Elegance(grey or brown). It is possible to reprogramme this motive to a blue version “R-design” (using car configuration > advanced settings > Advanced TFT DIM settings > Screen Skins > DIM: R-design menu), motives Ecoand Powerremain unchanged.
1. Temporarily disconnect new, already connected cables from the white DIM connector, and connect the original ones2. Start up the engine (SCL the steering lock should loosen up)3. While the engine is on disconnect the original DIM connector and reconnect TFT DIM4. Turn the engine off and lock it5. SCL will not turn on again (unless you connect the original pack). This will save you shipping costs, as SCL becomes used with time, but not yours!
