TOKYO, March 4 (Reuters) - Japan"s NEC Corpsaid on Wednesday it would close a liquid crystal display plant in southern Japan in December, as the company faces a $3 billion annual loss amid a global glut in the LCD sector.

The factory, owned by NEC unit NEC LCD Technologies Ltd, employs 370 workers and has a monthly production capacity of 86,000 industrial-use LCD panels, mainly small to mid-size panels for products such as point-of-sale terminals and mobile devices.

NEC LCD Technologies said it will integrate production into another plant in Akita, northern Japan, and plans to halve its work force to 600 by March 2010 through voluntary retirement.

NEC said in January it was looking for ways to get out of the industrial LCD display-related business and cut its group-wide work force by 20,000 people by March 2010.

NEC shares gained 3.6 percent to 231 yen by 0521 GMT, against a 0.9 percent rise in the benchmark Nikkei average. ($1=98.44 Yen) (Reporting by Taiga Uranaka and Sachi Izumi; Editing by Michael Watson)

According to a variety of wire sources, NEC factories in both the Iwate and Fukushima prefectures have been closed because of electricity and water supply problems. Fujitsu announced on Monday that it shut down 10 plants. Hitachi has closed down six factories. Canon has closed eight factories, and Nikon has closed four facilities.

Through its U.S. operation, Sharp issued a statement expressing "deepest sympathy to all the people affected by this earthquake. There are no extensive damages to our buildings or production facilities in Japan including our plant located in Yaita-city, Tochigi prefecture." Its LCD panel production facilities located in Sakai-city, Kameyama-city, Taki-cho and Tenri-city are operating normally.

• Akita Epson Corporation (Yuzawa, Akita Prefecture). Operations have been suspended due to a power cut caused by the earthquake. Damage to the buildings and production facilities were minimal. While carefully confirming plant safety and electricity power supply, Epson resumed operations from March 14.

Commenting on the effect of the earthquake and subsequent events on the LCD panel manufacturing sector in Japan, yesterday David Hsieh, vice president, greater China market, DisplaySearch, issued an email blast saying that “Some TFT LCD factories located in the impacted area, including Hitachi Display (Chiba prefecture), NEC’s Gen 2 (Akita prefecture), Toshiba’s Fukaya and Ishikawa factories, as well as Epson’s Gen 2, were reportedly not damaged by the earthquake. But it is very likely that these factories have paused production to gauge the impact and calibrate the facilities. These factories are all focused on small/medium panels, and their share in the industry is very minor. We are assuming that there will be no major impact to the TFT LCD industry as a result.”

“The majority of the TFT LCD industry is not located in the area most heavily impacted by the earthquake,” Hsieh said. "Sharp’s Gen 8 and Gen 10, Panasonic LCD’s Gen 8, and NEG’s glass tanks are all located in the Kansai area, which does not appear to have been affected by the earthquake. Key LCD component makers, like Nitto Denko, DNP, Sumitomo, Toppan, and Corning, have located most of their facilities in west Japan. These LCD and components clusters do not appear to have been affected.”

When the damage has been repaired — when the Japanese plants that produce not just the chips that power the worlds’ great products, but great finished products as well — are back up full-speed, we’ll all breathe a sigh of relief. Because the Japanese electronics industry is the economic backbone and the pride of a great country, that stands alongside this one, in a perennial striving toward excellence in design, process, and go-to-market execution. Godspeed to our Japanese colleagues in the commercial AV, projection, flat panel display, digital signage, semiconductor, cellphone, and smartphone industries, as they bounce back quickly, and come back even stronger than before.

The two electronics companies on Wednesday said they have signed an agreement to create a Shanghai-based joint venture by June 2003. SVA, the largest electronics group in China, is a holding company with interests in product development, manufacturing and sales of household appliances and LCD displays.

The forthcoming company, which is thus far unnamed, will plan, develop and manufacture thin filament transistor LCD panels and modules for PCs, monitors and displays primarily for the Chinese market. NEC and SVA invested 50 billion yen, or just over $416 million, in the company, with 75 percent coming from SVA and 25 percent from NEC.

A fifth-generation LCD plant--one that can more efficiently manufacture large panels--is scheduled to begin operation in Oct. 2004. It will cost about 85 billion yen, or just over $707 million, to set up the plant, the companies said.

In related news, NEC will create a separate new LCD business, called NEC LCD Technologies, to focus on high-end monitors with wide viewing angle technologies and high-resolution displays. For mass-market products, NEC will count on the new joint venture for product development, production and sales.

Joint ventures have become more popular in the LCD industry as the economy has dipped because setting up plants is expensive and joint ventures help to spread out the financial burden.

Shipments are on the rise though, according to a report Wednesday from Austin, Texas, research firm DisplaySearch. The company"s fourth-quarter report on desktop monitor shipments indicates that worldwide shipments of LCDs rose 54 percent from the same period a year ago, to a record high of 9.9 million units, while average pricing fell 9 percent. In 2002, LCD monitor shipments rose 105 percent, to 32.2 million units, the report said.

Chinese companies have gained a competitive edge in the large-screen display industry and the exit of South Korean counterparts such as Samsung Electronics and LG Display from the liquid crystal display market will bring opportunities for China"s panel makers despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Market research firm Sigmaintell said BOE Technology Group Co Ltd-a leading Chinese supplier of display products and solutions-became the world"s largest shipper of LCD TV panels for the first time in 2019.

The Beijing-based company shipped 53.3 million units of LCD panels in 2019, with production capacity increasing by more than 20 percent on a yearly basis.

The consultancy said the LCD TV panel production area of Chinese manufacturers will account for more than 50 percent of the global total this year, surpassing South Korean competitors who are accelerating the shutdown of large-sized LCD panel production capacity due to competition from Chinese manufacturers.

It estimated the production capacity of large-sized LCD panels will continue to increase in China over the next three years. In addition, global LCD TV panel shipments stood at 283 million pieces last year, a slight decrease of 0.2 percent year-on-year. Meanwhile, the shipment area was 160 million square meters, an increase of 6.3 percent year-on-year.

"Chinese companies have gained an upper hand in large-screen LCD displays. Samsung and LG"s decision to exit from the LCD sector means Chinese panel makers will take a dominant position in this field," said Li Dongsheng, founder and chairman of Chinese tech giant TCL Technology Group Corp.

Li said South Korean firms will focus on organic LED screens and quantum dot LED displays, while Chinese TV panel makers are catching up at a rapid pace.

Data consultancy Digitimes Research said it comes as little surprise that Samsung has opted to withdraw from the LCD panel sector as its LCD business was losing money in every quarter of 2019 due to challenges from Chinese competitors.

BOE said its Gen 10.5 TFTLCD production line achieved mass production in Hefei, Anhui province, in March 2018. The plant mainly produces high-definition LCD screens of 65 inches and above. With a total investment of 46 billion yuan ($6.5 billion), the company"s second Gen 10.5 TFT-LCD production line launched operations in Wuhan, Hubei province, in December.

The Gen 11 TFT-LCD and active-matrix OLED production line of Shenzhen China Star Optoelectronics Technology, a subsidiary of TCL, officially entered operations in November 2018, producing 43-inch, 65-inch and 75-inch LCD screens.

Chen Lijuan, an analyst at Sigmaintell, said panel manufacturers should not just invest in production lines, but also pay more attention to the establishment of the whole supply chain, including raw materials, equipment and technology.

Bian Zheng, deputy director of research at AVC Revo, a unit of market consultancy firm AVC, said China will have a 51 percent market share in global TV shipments in 2020, while South Korea will have 25 percent, adding that large-screen TV panels will bolster healthy development of the industry.

Bian said the OLED and QLED will be the next-generation flat-panel display technologies to be in the spotlight. LG Display is currently the world"s only supplier of large-screen OLED TV panels.

OLED is a relatively new technology and part of recent display innovation. It has a fast response rate, wide viewing angles, super high-contrast images and richer colors. It is much thinner and can be made flexible, compared with traditional LCD display panels.
